I guess I’m just naive. I thought luxury houses had their own factories and the artisans were treated with respect. This is terrible. Very eye opening and should make us all think hard about where our hard earned money is allocated.

Remember that this creator emphasizes that this is not a proven fact. I have a friend that used to work for Chanel in one of their factories in Italy, she said they were offered a special discount, good salary and she longed back for many years after leaving Italy. So I think this could be workers from another factory than she worked in or for a counterfeit factory? Well, anyway, it’s always sad when ppl don’t get fair treatment and fair trade.
Since their prices are so high, why are these factories in China?
I hear they are being mass produced in China!
This was an interesting video. When people talk about the fake industry and all the harm it supposedly does I often wonder if they know how the brands themselves operate and treat there employees. I mean Hermes pays their artisans 1,700 Euros a month. No wonder these artisans move to the fake industry.

I suppose they are not using children and workers in death trap buildings in Bangladesh... but if we think about what the profit is, it is ridiculous... then again luxury items for a business might not be as profitable as very cheap that are sold in bulk. Most Haute Couture houses make their money from sunglasses, perfumes, and cosmetics lines.

Exactly, I was actually laughing at how these fashion houses like to have selective outrage over the replica/counterfeit industries saying they are pushing organized crime blah blah blah. And yet they also have unsavory practices as well when it comes to forced/slave labor.
Let's keep it real, let's not pretend about the moral outrage towards replicas, when they are doing the same thing. I will still buy my authentic designers and not attach convenient morality to it ...

I agree. In fact, I personally think the place that makes the actual bag, also makes the fake. I mean, who knows better how the bag is made? I don't own a real or a fake, but I hear that the fakes are very well made, and, in some cases, I have heard that they can be better quality. None of it makes sense.
Totally disgusting….we as the consumer would like to think that we pay soooo much money for a bag, for quality, proper work regulations etc. These poor people are getting treated probably no better then the people that are making fakes..So way do we judge the fakes? At least we aren’t paying $15,000 for a fake bag 😢 totally disillusioned 😢 I’m actually getting so sick off hearing these things. Yes, early on as a teen I worked retail a couple of times & bailed. Long hours on your feet, no bonuses, agro customers, not a quick way up the ladder- miserable, no thanks!
Tell me again how unethical fakes are? Because I'm having a hard time believing there is really any difference at this point. Bad working conditions all around. Only difference is the inference that fakes fund "bad things".
I think the bigger question here is what is ethical at this point? And is there any ethics left in fashion in general?
@@SuperDacob Honestly there probably never was ethics in fashion in the way we consume it now.
Maybe long before our time there was when you could get stuff made by a tailor/seamstress but even then there was exploitation. Think of the tale of the Tailor of Gloucester.
I think I was probably happier with fashion when I couldn't afford it and used to sew it myself but now I have means I find it hard to find stuff that really is worthy of my dollars so far as quality goes.
The factories that are making the fakes probably have better working conditions haha

Honestly it’s sad that such a luxury, and wealthy brand , treat their employees like slaves and don’t pay them that well plus they have to work in not so well conditions… it’s sad because without those hardworking people, there’s no bags… and to pay for such bad quality bags, I prefer to support another brand that deserves the recognition and the value !

I was a former furniture and home décor buyer, I would go to the major furniture showrooms in Europe then took a job where I had to then go to factories in China, India and Indonesia that supply these showrooms. We bought from the same manufacturers as many of the high end furniture retailers. Those factories were deplorable. Some were like prisons. Its all the same BS and taking advantage of cheap labor then selling retail for huge mark up.
Its not just Chanel. Many major brands have been under fire for poor working conditions.
Prada, Ferragamo, Fendi and all the LVMH brands have been called out for vulnerable exploitation in textile factories.
The Kerring Brands(Balanciaga ect), Lauren, Burberry have maintained ethical supply chains and good working conditions.

In France net salaries are pretty low because it includes social security for health, retirement plan, accidents, then the additional healthcare plan.
They have huge bonuses. I know, I have worked for Hermès, I’m not saying it’s perfect but it’s far better than Chanel for instance, and I know some people who still work at Chanel.

Whilst this is very disappointing I can’t say I’m surprised. Sadly it’s not only Chanel that guilty of horrible behaviour and treating their employees badly .. I can also confirm that Chinese sellers have access to the same leathers / tanneries and hardware as the authentic bags . Very often they compare the authentic vs replica and laugh about how bad the stitching on the authentic bag is … very interesting subject Dacob🙌
Which is why many people don’t feel bad purchasing the AAA Fakes. It’s a shame they are paid so low and the bags retail upwards of 10k.
My favorite part is where the factory manager (idk what his actual title is) admitted to everything and essentially called the workers weak for not wanting to slave away making cheap bags that cost thousands. How absolutely RIDICULOUS. I can’t imagine not having a sliver of shame for what they’ve done to those poor souls.
Congratulations Dacob! This has been your best video ever (!)... well researched, lucid and passionate. And you are so right about piece work... you enslave the worker who will never be able to start their own company and perhaps make a competitive product? How can you if you only know 5% of the process! And, of course, piece work is the logical start to robotics. It won't be long.
In the end it does not matter if you buy fast fashion or luxury. Unless some laws and control system changes (and bribes and lobby will be punished more) we cant do much. But it wont change ever. Humans have always been like that. You pay someone to shut up and they accept in most cases...

I have a couple Chanel bags, but I stopped carrying them because if you live in Southern California like me if you go to the mall like South Coast Plaza in OC, Fashion valley in SD or Beverly Hills in BV, literally everyone is carrying Chanel, BV, YSL…etc. the luxury bags have become ubiquitous, it’s like everywhere you turn it’s everywhere! Yes, I own BV, CHANEL, YSL bags… etc. I bought them when I was younger and now I am older I look for leather bags from independent leather artisans, so called “quiet luxury”.
I just found out that the daughter of a former coworker of mine is making beautiful handcrafted (by her) leather bags and small leather goods. I think I’m going to order something from her instead of buying a name brand.
SMIC is the French version of minimum wage, since 2018 it's 1 498,47 Euro per month with 35h per week (says Wikipedia). It's exploitation given the working conditions described and the fact the Chanel could easily pay more!
I am not surprised at all! A few years back I watched a documentary about from where the big fashion houses source their leathers. The work conditions in the factories where awful, the conditions in which the animal lived - awful. I remember they showed how the bunnies, used to make some obviously famous I think Max Mara coat, lived in so small cadges that they could not move, most of them were ill. It was so disturbing and an eye opener for me.
After the journalist reached some of the big name brands for comment they just say that they didn't know about the conditions and that from now on they will be more careful from where they buy their leathers. Come on, nobody believes you! All they care is the profit.
Luxury is not only to make beautiful peace but everything behind it has to be in higher standard - the moral, ethics etc.

Sitting for hours on end in silence sounds horrific. Like torture. Sounds similar to solitary confinement but with people around to make it harder. The boredom must be insane. I feel like the fast fashion factory brands are under the microscope but these lux brands go under the radar.
Ive heard that a few times about real being sold as counterfeit as another means of revenue
They only train people on one task because they believe it stops counterfeiting of bags. No one person knows how to properly do one bag, or has access to all components of a bag.

i have a friend who worked in one of the factory hired by Chanel in Italy near Milan, he said they had the same situation and, their salary is low because they are undocumented

SMIC is the minimum salary in France. It is an abbreviation of "Salaire minimum de croissance". In 2023, the hourly SMIC is 8.92 euros.
The contract will be given by Chanel based on a competitive low price for manufacture. The fault lies with Chanel for negotiating stupidly low prices with third party suppliers.
Outsourcing, yes, I read something very similar about the LV workers in Spain & LV cutting costs and manufacturing parts of their bags in China during Covid. They had quality issues and returned to the original workers. It’s a small village in Spain and half the population are employed by LV apparently

I ended to buy a new Chanel bag in 2021 and the bag was from 2019. New designs are also often strange styles that they have to cracks sooner or later.
I haven’t bought from Chanel since 2016. I also stopped buying from other luxury brand around 2019. Just couldn’t justify the prices anymore. So I settle for being content with what I already have.
The one task specialization is called “lean manufacturing” - and that is developed by Japanese car companies. It improves yield, speed and consistency but IMO, it removes the luxury aspect from the product - the magic, if you will. This is known as the Pégase system in LVMH, I believe.
The interesting this is there is a Toyota Manufacturing System for apparel manufacturing and it actually involves a working completing all the steps of a garment moving around a cell of sewing machines to complete it. That way one piece get started and finished by the same worker and it eliminates work in progress. It requires standup sewing machines though.
The difference is no one on a car assembly line is going to start a small business making cars.

Chanel won’t get in trouble if they “subcontract” out. We all know how the game is played.

It‘s easy to stop buying chanel but where does it stop? Pretty much all the fashion houses/brands etc. are doing this, also food companies and so on. I think we really fucked up as a society/consumers and in a way it seems hopeless. I feel so sorry for these workers and the physical and mental abuse they have to go through.
I boycotted Chanel 5 years ago. Horrible quality on a mini flap, awful sunglasses…and little customer service for repairs. And awful business practices (including being on Palestine support boycott list). Price hikes like crazy and fools keep flocking to them to hand over their money. Now this. Label hungry validation seekers, please look elsewhere! Or better yet, look within yourself!
Thank you ,Thank you so much for making more highlight onto this subject. I recently watched a video regarding this type of process of leather making factory in Italy and let me tell you its sad. So bascily they hire a lot of senegalese put them on those factories with horrible conditions, no PPE or assurance, lay them off if they haave some tragic accidents and the process goes al along. But in the other hand, they hir Italians pay them the regular pay with better conditions, those guys orks 13 hours a day if they wanted to file a complaint they will have to travel 30 miles and yet their complains won't be even taken in seriously. The worst part is the office to take care of them are open only the times they work making them impossible to meet with them if so they will lose a day or their jobs. Sometimes, I wonder if even buying a real one worth it since the fake one also are made the same way, either or the money they get are not worthy. One of them lost their 3 joints and never got justice, its hard very hard tobe honest on luxury.

i had a discussion with my chanel SA .. she told me the bags are all different ( flaps not being straight and stitching ) bc they are “ handmade” and they are not perfect bc they are “handmade “, when i asked her if they were actually handmade or machine made
Chanel bags are for the most part machine made but with a few steps requiring human hands to finish them off. There are cases of bags made with a lot of sequins or extra added details. Those details might be done by hand as well but the bulk of the basic bags is made using machines mostly with a few steps in between done by human hands. The stitching if the leather and the combining assembly of the parts of the bag are usually done by machine while a human hand guides the pieces of leather through the machines,
I guess what i was saying is that she told me they are not “perfect “ bc they are “ handmade “ … but then again , i think if im paying $10k it better be damn perfect and symmetrical
@@SuperDacobyou are right of course, machines make the patterns, cut the leather, sew the bags, but the artisan still has to guide the sewing machine and assemble the bag. It’s truly fascinating watching the whole process, from start to finish. There are some terrific videos of this on yt

* better than minimum wage with incentives for strong performance!
* 30% discount like client advisors with standard limitations
*Top class training
*annual team Bonding and appreciation events.
*good sick leave, annual leave and retirement contributions

When the workers "soecialize in one thing", your point is completely true, PLUS it resembles a mass produced factory line instead of an artisanal quality production process, and basically takes away the value from the bag and brand in my opinion. Plus, like you said, it takes their freedom to become an independent artisan down the road because they only know how to do one portion of the whole product. 😕

I've studied manufacturing organization. Conveyor-type work organization where one person does only one thing is proven ineffective, as people tend to lose concentration after a few hours of work. Pure pragmatical approach to efficiency. It's just bad for the quality.
Even more concerning for normative people is that this might increase the number of injuries plus lead to quick burnout. Disgusting.
Ok I don't know the laws regarding room temperature in France. But in Lithuania the law for room temperature is 18 C to 22 C so even if its 18 C still on the minimum. But maybe in France they don't have these laws. The temprature standard is 18 to 22 C not just 18 C
Luxury brands who produce in Italy, ship in Chinese (slave) labor, which became exposed during c*vid being that all the Chinese work force used in these factories were from Wuhan but it has been a known secret that luxury brands have been doing this for years. They are paid minimal wages, way below the legal wage minimums and forced to work in terrible conditions. Its horrendous. Why anyone buys luxury these days is beyond me. You can get very fine, beautiful, super high quality leather goods for under $2000 - sometimes under $700 for a nice leather bag made to the highest quality standards. I would not be surprised if this is happening in France as well. The only ONLY brand I haven't heard anything terrible about is (at least for their leather bags) is Hermes who's fairly open about their workers and workplace conditions - now that could be a façade also who really knows.

This iS so true, there is sooo much dodgy things the public never see, also in overseas garment production.. unless u actually work in the industry, you’d never realise. Eg the Resale market - when companies literally replace the whole bag then stick the original serial number back on the lining & sell it for higher price. Especially what y said about rep factories.. third world countries & human rights abuses..so lucky we live in the west
Not surprising. Brands that cut corners with product quality will try to get away with taking as much as they can from their employees. As someone who feels frozen in 60 degree weather this is inhumane working conditions.
I like how you appreciate the workers & their rights, it’s human to interact during an 8 hour workday, I ts not a prison right? I’m surprised they haven’t taken industrial legal action, its not China after all..
The only way to change this is to not buy their products until they treat people like humans. Right now, these brands are on a high because they raise their prices, and they seem to have more people willing to spend their own hard-earned money on a bag. This is what usually comes out of China for the same reasons and now explains what is going on with these companies. I do think its all going to come crashing down at some point not in the too distant future and their bags will be worth next to nothing. Only vintage bags will retain their value. It's a real shame to watch companies like this go from high end to an inevitable train wreck. They are no longer special but becoming more and more common because they are marketing to the middle and lower middle class. I feel the same and I stop buying luxury bags particularly Chanel and products from LVMH since I watched several commentary videos about their quality issues and working conditions.🥲 I’m glad that I watched Dacob’s exposure of Chanel and tanner’s bags decomposition video early. All of those made me realize if the high-end products retain only the sign-value,but not in the high quality aspect. I’m not going to pay the insane amount of money only to make myself look good superficially. There are still lots of small atelier produce great quality goods,though.😅

It's crazy how these bags which have 10-20 times the mark up can't provide human conditions for their workers. Fashionistas should banned this company, besides these bags are about has durable as.a Zara polyurathane bag. Heck the Zara bag I purchase way back lasted 3 years. Some of these Channel bags don't even last that long.
Comparing a Zara bag to chanel is a bit of an exaggeration.. Chanel leather bags last many years.

But are these factories owned by the brands or are the factories just contractors? I’m thinking if they don’t own the factories then they can’t control the factories which is why the factories may be selling replicas through the back door.
This is a question many of us are asking ourselves. I do think that there are possibly many legal loopholes for bigger corporations to use in order to minimize or cancel out liabilities. There is always a way I suppose but the question for me is not so much about the legalities of all these practices but rather about the morals. If any given brand hires subsidiaries and external factories, then they technically allegedly have no responsibilities about how the owners of said factories treat their workers. But what about the moral responsibilities?

@@SuperDacob it's a separate company called La Fabrique Andegave. They specialize in subcontracting work for companies like Chanel. This is their second factory opening and it looks like they have been benefiting from the French Employment ministry many 'job creations' subsidy scheme to train workers. It's a gravy train for them to employ people at low cost with state funding under the premise that they will create permanent jobs in a rural part of France. Sadly a lot of employers use these schemes to line their pockets at the expense of the workers.

Bags in general are 99% of the time made in terrible conditions, I've seen it, been there. What I don't understand is: why is it that such huge, luxery brands NEED so much profit? I mean, the bags are SO expensive. Why can't they pay fair salaries?
Such horrible working conditions, yet they could actually have them in a proper environment with good conditions, they can afford it. 😢
It's really sad how the poor are exploited to produce luxury for the rich.

If you do a quick google search you'll see that back in 2018 there's several article(s) talking about exploitative conditions and forced labor, including sweatshop conditions, at Prada, Fendi, Dior, Chanel, Max Mara, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Kate Spade, and Dolce & Gabbana (and I'm sure there's more). This isn't anything new. These fashion houses need to do better. We can make them do better by putting our money where our values lie.
There's an article entitled "Luxury’s Hidden Indian Supply Chain" by The New York Times. Everyone should read it.
@@gorgeouss79 I used to work for a small designer 15 years ago. We would order our beaded textiles from a company in India. Sometimes we would choose from their designs, sometimes we would send them designs and they would make make them for us. We labeled our items as beaded in India, assembled in the USA. One day they messed up and emailed us purchase orders for a super high end Italian designer. And that fashion house, of course, labels all of their items as made in Italy. There’s just no transparency in fashion.
I had a friend who worked for a major Luxury Brand in Paris and all their beaded pieces were ordered, made and sent from Bangladesh and India but the final products were all labelled either made in France or made in Italy.

A lot of businesses are getting away with this kind of behavior in the US as well. Businesses are also getting in trouble for child labor. All I say is speak up and say it LOUD!! Unionize too because power in numbers. It’s 2023. These people shouldn’t be getting away with this stuff anymore.

Imagine a surgeon specializing only in cutting open a human chest to access a heart for heart surgery but then not knowing how to do the next step cuz they were only trained to do that one thing… good luck paying that medical bill later, after fifty to a hundred surgeons had to work on you for one procedure.💖
