People need to face the fact that the Wertheimer Family has been laughing all the way to The Bank, they never respected Chanel’s vision after Karl and are just throwing her name at us because they know that people will buy anything that has those CC’s on it. I feel like the last batch of leather from 2021 are the best we’re going to get out of quality.
And all that money they spend trying to get a piece of what the brand has told you all is luxury when people should invest in their own brands. Gabrielle Chanel got her start somewhere too.
I definitely agree with you since I have a whole series of Chanel seasons to compare with. Recent launches especially 22 A onwards, the leather quality has seemed to have gone completely southwards , talking about my 22 A Chanel 19, 22B Trendy CC and 22B classic flap grey. My 22B Classic grey, the leather seems to be thinner and the base of the bag not as sturdy as my vintage classic black (2012!) , overall the bag is so much lighter! 22A Chanel 19 caramel is also wrinkly and leather thinner as well...I am so done with Chanel!
I think everyone needs to hop onto the YSL train. I'm a big Louis Vuitton fan because I love the history of it but I've been buying more and more Saint Laurent and I absolutely love them. I currently own the Toy Lou Lou, the medium Lou camera bag, 2 card holders and the large zip wallet and have not experienced one quality issue with any of the items. Sadly even with the new Louis Vuitton items they've been putting out, you're almost guaranteed to have quality issues with each purchase. Quality with that luxury brand started dropping after 2010.
I'm team YSL. Don't get me wrong, I love LV and the history but lately YSL has been showing me what quality really looks like. Hell, even Coach has impressed me. I purchased the black quilted leather Tammie crossbody clutch 2 weeks ago and that bag is amazing, it feels like butter. I examined it for a good 20 mins and couldn't find one issue, not even a crooked stitch and I only spent $139 for it lol.
I've been a big coach fan in the past! My coach Cassie is one of my most used contemporary bags. And YSL is a great brand as well. I got a mini Lou at the beginning of the year and I really love it ❤️
I find it frustrating that an expert like you, knowing the drop in quality, would still pay the extortionate price of the pink bag. That’s despite the fact that the prices had all been increased. It’s disheartening.
It seems to me that Chanel is struggling with managing their supply chain and manufacturing infrastructure. It’s clear they are struggling to meet demand so it would be a very logical and effective decision for them to begin using cheaper/faster methods to manufacture their products. This is extremely interesting! Thanks for the video, looking forward to more on the topic.
I agree..the quality and construction issues do not seem to be as prevalent with SLGs and less popular items from my observation. I have the Chanel 19 wristlet and no material or construction issues with it. It also was not as popular either and not an actual handbag.
Thank you for this much needed video. Chanel has been receiving extreme backlash about not only the price increases but also the poor quality of their bags. This makes me wonder, with the new stores they are opening for "VIP" customers, will they receive the higher quality bags and other consumers who don't purchase as often receive the lower quality bags? It's definitely something to think about.
Actually I do think this might be true. After all the VIP do get the first bite of the cherries and whatever that is left over will be offered to the rest of us. I got my new trendy cc small black and seriously the leather of 22B vs my other 16K beige trendy is sooooo completely different. 16K is so buttery and smooth lambskin but the 22B is horribly, fresh out of boutique but the bag is already so wrinkly especially at the back and when the flap opens up it mae the bag even worse. Had to reject the bag.
@@Leahw88 Oh wow! The last purchase I made from Chanel was my small vanity with chain. The Lambskin leather seems to be holding really good. Thank goodness for that. I'm considering if I will purchase anything else. I'm almost afraid to with all the backlash I've been hearing.
This is amazing! Thank you. I LOVE old Coach bags! As for Chanel - I know I will get hate for this but WHY is anyone still buying it? The price increases. The horrible service stories. The alleged lies about if a bag is in stock. The stitching issues which precede this new issue by a while (see Sophie Shohet.) I feel like they are laughing at us!! I have still had GREAT quality from Loewe, Chloe, and other brands and smaller brands such as Demellier and Strathberry. All Strathberry bags are hand made in Spain. They are truly gorgeous. There are so many smaller brands deserving of our money more than big corporate brands who it seems to me don't care about customers except perhaps those spending tens of thousands on courture!
😂😂😂 thank you for watching! I totally understand the frustration with Chanel. I think probably because for many people, owning a Chanel is still aspirational. But Chanel has certainly not been doing themselves any favors in continuing this idea 😒
@@classicswithaquirk That would make sense to ASPIRE to a brand IF they were QUALITY but they are ruining that and so... they don't deserve the hard earned money and those who respect their grind will leave as they aspire for something that respects their hard work.
I've seen a rep reissue up close and, frankly, the leather on your pink reissue looks very similar to what I recall the rep looking like. The rep I saw included a little piece of matching leather that was being used as a protector for the zipper tab (to prevent those marks the zippers always leave). That piece was clearly the same stuff they were using for the bag. It was a paper-thin layer of leather glued to foam (which would then provide the padding inside the quilts). The bag looked, felt and smelled like leather, but there clearly wasn't very much actual leather being used. If, to save money or material, Chanel is stealing techniques from the rep bag makers, we're all in trouble.
Amazing and super informative video - I’m glad you’re speaking up about the poor quality. I made a video last month talking about Chanel’s decrease in quality and poor and unprofessional experience overall at the boutique and SA’s lack of knowledge. All I can say is I’ve never had so many dislikes on a video and haters were calling me a masochist for purchasing Chanel and then filming a critical video after.
Wow. Thank you for this explanation. It’s crazy that Chanel is charging $6k+ for the 22 with these issues, yet limiting what classic bags customers can buy to protect its brand. Protect the brand by improving the quality! Appreciate how you use this forum to cast light on this!
I am sitting here nodding along in agreement with what you are saying in relation to hides and dyeing processes. It has always been my understanding that the best hides are reserved for luxury manufacturers, be that bags/furniture/cars. Other Companies aren’t able buy them even if they could afford to. The European Union have, over the years, made many demands to how businesses can operate and Tanneries won’t have escaped this, having to make changes to their ways of dyeing materials and the chemicals involved, many sadly going out of business altogether because these newer methods of tanning no longer produced a great quality product. Most people who buy modern day Chanel buy for the name and care little about how it was made and modern day Chanel are greedy feckers with complete disregard for the quality and construction of their products, so it’s win-win. The few of us who do care are growing more disappointed by the day. EDIT: Maybe if we were happy to own just a couple of bags instead of the plethora some people have, the quality would be better. Is it partly our fault for wanting more?
I think that in general, demand is going to just be a part of the growth of a company. Even if everyone who’s ever wanted a Chanel only gets one or two, there will continually be more people who will want their one or two. Whatever choices Chanel (or any other company) has made in terms of quality, I think that it’s really the transparency that I personally would like. Chanel -even Hermes- have made PVC bags and people were happy to buy them! But in those cases, the brands told us it was pvc! And as I stated, I don’t know for SURE any of this of course. It’s just… looking a little harder at what I can.
So Chanel raised prices March 2022 again on their classic bags and severally dropped the quality? Unbelievable and unacceptable. Chanel, you want top prices you need top quality. I certainly will not pay that price for hardware and logos. This will not do.
Great video! People have been griping about Chanel quality for years but you're the first person I've seen explain in an educated way what the technical issues might actually be.
Oh! I've seen that pulling around the stitches on Chanel classic flaps before, and I wondered if I was overthinking it!! Glad I'm not crazy because I was thinking it was too tight and tearing the leather. I've seen the same thing on silk clothes with polyester thread. This was an excellent video! Depressing... but excellent 😋😅 Honestly, I'm so relieved I bought a classic flap when I did, and not just because of the price increases. Everything Chanel has done over the last few years has made it harder and harder to justify their inflated prices.
If you compare Chanel vs Hermes quality, the choice is clear. The sad thing is consumers will continue to buy the modern Cfs despite the lack of quality.
I think you're right in that there will always be those who want the Chanel classics. I'd love for Chanel to take a better stance in terms of quality again.
Chanel is ripping off everyone. Higher Prices and Lower Quality Control. That’s Crazy. If we want to stop all this we better stop buying stuff. Until they get their stuff together.
I wonder if resale values will start to drop. They are getting so much negative press. I feel like I need to sell the Chanel bags I’ve been considering getting rid of, sooner than later.
I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between a new classic flap vs seasonal bags. I'm thankful ppl are shining a light on this bc i absolutely will not buy a new peice from chanel. Id go vintage.
I love all this stuff. All the high end bags, shoes, clothes, etc. High-end pieces truly are made better, last longer, look better. But in the end...it's all just "stuff." As a lifelong dedicated follower of fashion, I'm now at the age where I know I can look good for much MUCH less. My money is precious. Things are tight. Health is not what it once was (you know..."invincible" in my youth). When I see people arguing over the differences (however miniscule) of a REAL designer bag vs a dupe, I always wonder: Would 99.9% of anyone know the difference? Or even care? Worse yet, when I watch some of these channels and see HOW MUCH MONEY is being spent on these bags--even "recycled" bags--it about gives me a heart attack. Thousands and _thousands_ of dollars, even from "reduced" sites like Real Real, with many YT channelers have many multiple pieces! I know "it's their money, they can do what they want with it," but seriously ladies, is there not a better way to spend one's hard earned money, especially in this day and age? (especially when spending all that hard-earned money on things like a Chanel bag that peels away after 1 day). Very soon, having a fancy bag won't matter--AFFORDING FOOD will be all that matters. I'm not joking. The world is going to (literal) hell in a handbasket....and from what I've seen around TH-cam...it's a _designer_ handbasket, at that. Just my 2 cents.
I’ve been shopping Chanel for over a decade … since covid I’ve felt their bags feeling like plastic or the workmanship with several problem. With 6 seasons per year and high demand I would totally not be surprised if they’re weaving in plastics !! I’ve given up on their bags after I had 4 issues in one year around 2019 … love their styles but for the price I shouldn’t be getting this type of quality !!
I think it would be absolutely amazing for you to acquire the Chanel 22 and do a full on wear and review test and expose the material that it's really made out of ! If it is indeed partly faux leather and you're able to confirm that, I think your TH-cam channel would absolutely blow up in popularity! Your video gave me so much food for thought! Wow , bravo !!!!! Thank you so much for your thoughts!
@classicswithaquirk hello I came across your video and I'm absolutely drawn in by the way you speak about leathers. My cousin recently acquired a chanel bag from the thrift store she works at. This bag was in such horrible condition it was hard to tell if it was authentic or not. After reading in a few forums and watching your video I will say it's definitely authentic. The "leather" around the top of the bag was peeling and almost crumbling into little pieces. I've never seen anything like it. Not even in Brahmin Coach or Dooney &Bourke. I'd be embarrassed to carry it. There shouldn't be any type of storage issues, wear and tear or lack of moisture that should cause a bag to look and feel like this bag. It was hard and very very stiff. I don't believe there's anything she can do to restore this bag. In my opinion, if she starts carrying it, it will start to chip and look like a dog who has fleas eating its hair out in spots.
The bag I'm referring to is a tote bag with chains around the straps. I'm not sure what the original owner done to this bag or if Chanel really dropped the ball with their quality when the bag was made. Whoever caused this bag to look this way should honestly be ashamed of themselves. The bag doesn't seem to be 15 years old. I believe it's a newer bag than that. I've had $300 bags longer and looks better..actually several. The other person mentioned you purchasing a bag and trying to expose them. I agree with you not purchasing a bag with your own money just to destroy it, but I believe there might be enough people willing to pitch in and help you purchase the bag for this reason. It wouldn't hurt to mention it on a live and everyone can brainstorm about how to actually come up with the money pot. I'd love to know what's going on with these bags because something definitely isn't right about these bags.
Thanks for the video! Went back and looked at all my flaps. I have a 224 reissue from 2007, medium beige Clair from 2014 and a jumbo caviar from 2022 all purchased from the boutique so all wear and tear is mine. Honestly quality wise my 2007 and 2014 are almost perfect! They’ve lasted, don’t have much wear/tear despite lots of use and I wasn’t even that careful. Current jumbo 2022 has 2 slightly loose stitches on the flap, leather feels stickier than my caviar medium from 2014 (I don’t know why. I live in California), hardware scratches way easier, etc. Still love the bag but when I came home and compared my medium flap the leathers just felt so different. I know leathers are different but just felt odd. Also I have a may 2022 from the boutique caviar zippy coin purse, but it already has 2 popped stitches and I just got it in may - almost just LAST MONTH. My sisters from 2005 is perfect!
It sounds like you have a beautiful collection! I'm so happy to hear how well your older bags have been wearing though I'm sorry to hear about the wear on your new coin purse! Thank you for watching 🙏💕
You did a very thorough in-depth good argument, thanks for putting your time and energy into the question, it will help many to be on the look out for quality when purchasing.
Very nice video! Also, have you considered that the three bags from Chanel that you say are in good quality are all black bags and the one that's current season is a light colored one? I was thinking about it bc I also am a leather enthusiast and read that the color black takes well to materials, I think that's in general too black is just like a strong color. Maybe they put more effort to making their black bags than their light colored ones? Idk that's just something I noticed. Either way Chanel needs to get it together. Here's my conspiracy, Chanel thrives with consumers who only buy them for their name and don't care about quality. As long as there's people out there who just buy bc it says Chanel, Chanel will continue to make cheap quality stuff bc they know they can still sell it no matter what. Side note: forgot to add that's why I do appreciate brands like Chloe on their website they actually tell you upfront if they use aniline or semi aniline dyed leathers and etc.
If Chanel only did costume jewellery they would have gone out of business years ago. It is absolute junk. They think that by putting a name cartouche on them that that is enough. They’re on par with Claire’s Accessories if you ask me. Even before all these leather and manufacturing problems came up, for the life of me, I could never understand how a company could make fabulous bags and such terrible costume jewellery
@@junebarber8459 omg yes I completely agree I actually just had my CC earrings crystals repaired the other day bc like 2 fell out and it still cost me $80 bucks like really I paid over $300 you'd think repairs would be included but whatever. I'm actually listing them to sell bc I don't even wear them anymore I only rather wear fine jewelry.
Oh yes, that's why in my best video I discuss painting vs dyeing! There's so much more to talk about. I could make videos for ages 😅 And to your other point, I mean... Chanel did sell an $800 advent calendar last year that was like 50% stickers 😂
Agreed. It's so easy to say "increase in price but decrease in quality" when it comes to brands, that's not always the case. Every brand, luxury and not, has defects. But, in this case, it seems to be true, unfortunately.

This video was so informative and well done. I’d love another video comparing Chanel leather to other fashion houses…YSL, Hermes, etc. I hope this video blows up for you and draws in tons of new subscribers!!!!
I think part of the problem with the 22 is the design. A draw string bag will have stress and weight put on the casing where the draw strings are threaded through the casing. With the 22 the metal and leather straps would put stress on the casing and then add in the weight of items in the bag and then the casing is going to have damage. And if the casing is some kind of leather,
🧐 someone I know told me that it’s better to invest on ostrich leather bag than other types because (a) zero maintenance (b) you can use it for travel with no issue and (c) sturdiness. Is she correct?
Wow. It looks coated to me. I think (but I could be wrong) that the UK, at least, has some guidelines about how thick a coating can be on leather and still be called full-grain. I was surprised when I got an Aspinal bag, clearly advertised as full grain, but there were no pores to be seen. It seems to me (not saying this is definitely true; just my opinion) that my bag is coated. I wonder if Chanel is also using coated full grain leather.
I am so glad I came across your video and channel. I’ve been eyeing some vintage Chanel, and I’ve been concerned about the lambskin. It’s such a shame that Chanel is choosing to decrease the quality while increasing pricing. Thank you for such in-depth insight.
Wow - fully impressed by your knowledge! This is concerning, particularly as I'm virtually 100% I'll be able to get a bag from the next collection. After this next bag (which I've been drooling over for a long time), I might honestly be done with them. Price, quality, greed and now scamming us - a sure way to create ill-will from your client base. Great video and hope you're feeling better.
My mother and I went to the Chanel store to buy a bag 30 years ago, but I could not buy it. As soon as my mother touched their bags, my mother said they were made of vinyl. (No way.... ) I asked the manager if they were made of leather. She said they were made of vinyl without hesitation. This was my first and last visit to the Chanel store.
At this point, if you really want real ‘old school’ quality (ie. hand-stitching, glazing, precious metal plated hardware), the only option is basically Hermes, and even they are beginning to slide in terms of quality and consistency, such as the thickness of plating on hardware etc.
This was a very informative video. The pink reissue does look like crepe skin in comparison to the black reissue. I was amazed at the damage on the 22 although I thought it would be the chain tearing from the seams because of the weight vs peeling. Again, thumbs up for the technical points.
Love the MESS out of this very informative video!😮👏🏽👏🏽 One of the best videos on leather quality and craftsmanship of bags. I'm a little shocked at the new Chanel flap bag, and especially Super Dajob's bag😬... TFS
This is a phenomenal video, thank you for making it. I'm not a Chanel fan, but love bags in general and knowing about leathers is important. The first word that entered my mind when you inserted the side by side Reissue pictures was that the black one looked "plump". The hide looked like it was thick, hydrated, and sturdy, while the pink looked thin and fragile. I saw Dacob's video and was so sad for him. What a disappointing experience. In his video I commented on an article I saw last month out of Vogue HK by Ingrid Chua. In it she breaks down the types of leathers produced by most tanneries used by luxury houses, and from those descriptions, I had thought that maybe Dacob's 22 was made from Split leather. What is your take on this? Basically, it's the lowest grade of leather you can get. It can "split" and show the white bottom of the skin, but it is still one step up from bonded leather. In any case, it is obvious that Chanel is cutting corners in order to maximize its profits and taking the customers for a ride. Not a good look.
After watching this video and Dacob’s video, I promptly packed up my new reissue I purchased from Fashionphile and back it went. I am not paying top dollar for a bag that lacks in the quality department. Chanel has become a joke.
@@donniedarko448 I have a lot of different ones from low end to high end. It's just whatever smells good to me. I do a test at night to check the longevity I spray whichever one I just purchased on my pajamas and if it's there in the morning it's a keeper if not its a return. I just bought Burberry Brit and My Burberry blush. Brit maybe going back I'm wearing it now and it's quite weak. My Burberry blush on the other hand gets lots of compliments and it's strong. I also wear curve crush. It's a cheapie but it's lasting power runs circles around many other fragrances. I have a few by lanvin which last a few by Gres which Gres cabochard is my absolute favorite I have some dior poison which doesn't last like it used to I have hanae mori butterfly which is a keeper I have Jimmy choo which I bought 3 bottles because it's my favorite and lasts long I have white diamonds which is another lasting one and a favorite I have eternity and obsession and euphoria and CK one can't go wrong with Calvin Klein all classics. I have majority of the perfumes in the Halloween series by j del pozo they all smell good I have 3 by escada I have one very long lasting one called white diamonds en rogue by Elizabeth Taylor it was limited edition but it smells sooo good and I got compliments on it too. If you can find it online I say go for it. It doesn't smell anything like original white diamonds it's a bit younger and fruity but sooo delightful.
Just turned off by this brand now, especially after my friend, a saks SA told me that Chanel will no longer give commission to SAs for bags and jewelry. Many SAs only sell Chanel and now they're looking for new jobs bec of this.
Gosh, what a great video. You have such knowledge and you impart it so well. I’m a bit if a bag freak, also an old bird - I do love a quality bag, always have .. Because I’m old and boring (as well as being poor), I always tend to buy good leather bags from the second hand or used market. I have noticed over the years that most bags have dipped substantially in quality - materials as well as workmanship. You are too young to remember probably, the brand Enny - Italian leather bags that were very expensive but superb. Sadly they went out of business, but I still have a few and always look out for them pre-loved, as they now call them. For classic, quality, everyday bags I love the vintage The Bridge brand and the I Medici. Even used daily, but always looked after and cleaned regularly, they last and last and even manage to look better the older they get. Forgive the ramblings of an old bird but couldn’t resist putting my little bit in to the mix ..
I'm so happy you thought it was a good video, thank you! 🙏💕 I'm a huge fan of vintage bags myself. The quality of some of these older bags is unmatched
Glad to see you doing better and your back on our screens. Thanks for sharing this educational video and all the knowledge you have obtained from your research. Please keep them coming
Thank you for the video which confirmed my purchases so far and that it didnt just happen to a few batches of bags from the look. The taut stitching is pretty prevalent across a few models too : Classic flaps ,(both double and the mini) and trendy cc coz I am speaking for my own bags. The craftmanships has definitely deteriorated. I am suspecting either the artisan bag makers are under production pressure, (or just underpaid resulting in disgruntled workers) despite the massive price increase of the bags) or just a wilful cost cutting measure of Chanel (at the backdrop of astronomical price increase and reported phenomenal profits increase, Chanel is really pushing their luck too far or treating their customers sub par intelligence) Time to stop buying Chanel and I hope this video gets publicized widely
This is exactly why I did a major purchase of luxury bags a few months back. I knew that this change in how leather is treated was changing and not for the better. I’m so happy that I did!. I won’t purchase any more luxury bags until they either perfect this process..which I don’t think they can because it’s of the nature of the processing…or go back to the original way. Meanwhile. I have many many bags made prior to this change. The change was not just made by Chanel btw so check before you buy
I had the same thread pulling/leather ripping issue on the corners of a beige claire medium classic flap! (Thankfully returned) from my experience, it actually seems like classic pieces have a higher tendency to see flaws (both quality and craftsmanship) than seasonal pieces. My theory is that classics are worth coming up with short cuts due to the volumes they need to produce. Ugh upsetting nonetheless! Thanks for sharing your deep analysis on this.
Great in-depth video with great knowledge, thank you for sharing 👌. We all noticed, that the quality went down, but it‘s super interesting to see some actual „evidence“
I just bought a 23P medium classic flap in caviar, beige claire, from the Chanel boutique. The stitching is perfection. No pulling at all. Everything lines up. The bag is quality. I think with a supply chain as long and complicated as Chanel’s, there will be the occasional issue that slips through quality control, but we know Chanel stands behind their products and will make good on any issue. Don’t we? I think so, Lol. The biggest slip up I have seen them make is the design of the Boy Bag, where the hair can get caught in those two little strap posts. That is the design side. Now we have quality on the stitching and on the 22. Ugh. I once bought a bonded leather white ottoman. I never understood what that was. I knew it was cheap, though.
I love videos like this, very interesting 💫 Appreciate all of the information you shared! Hate to say it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Chanel actually was using bonded “leather”. Honestly, it’s quite shameful 🤦🏻♀️ and I’m surprised that consumers still continue to purchase new pieces of inferior quality. Thank you for such great content 💗
I also have the same pink mini reissue and it also has super tight stitching and I noticed it after I got it. My pocket on the back seems very low also, its even but very low.
I own 2 vintage Coach bags that are buttery soft . As far as Chanel , there’s only one bag I would get atp it’s seasonal from 2016. All of the popular styles to me are ridiculously price for the quality.
Hello from Japan! Great video - I find the same kind of leather quality issues with COACH. They still release some pieces made of top quality leather like natural tanned/glovetanned leather, but for some of the cheaper bags, the quality of the leather is questionable. Even some SAs says the leather quality was much better in the old days. I'm guessing this entire movement has something to do with the trend that people prefer a bag to be lighter??
Hello Masso! Thank you for watching. Yes, I agree that current Coach quality is certainly not what it used to be. I would like to make a video comparing a bunch of different Coach leathers, because I feel some of the changes are significant!
Quite right to be agitated about this! You've articulated this way better than I ever could, I'd wind up a twisted little ball of rage! The money that is charged for these bags and the expectations that are set do NOT align! 🤬
I am surprised to hear that you think that the issues are mostly 2022, last year when I went into Chanel, out of 25 bags (total) I have seen on display and held in my hand, 20 had a crooked flap and or misaligned pockets, stitching... and a friend of mine had an issue of oxidised metals after a year of use... But I definitely gained some more knowledge, thank you for the information!
I went to a Chanel a few few weeks ago and the bags they had on hand look so cheap. It didn’t feel like a luxury a luxury boutique and on top of that the sa treated me like I’m a little kid considering I can be her mom. Just sad
I mostly was talking about the leathers used in terms of quality disparity, but you're very right in that people have been noticing significant quality issues for several years now 😔
Very informative and unbiased video thank you so much! For a top luxury brands to go down this road, and feels justified to charge their customers top dollars, we as customers need to think twice! When u pay this much money for a bag, you should at least expect that to be long lasting, and made with the best quality materials and craftsmanship, accept nothing less.
@@classicswithaquirk spot on, dear! It seems this luxury brand is starting to confuse their loyal customers with the illusion of quality, but got caught numerous times. I hope you continue to enlighten us all about what we should look for and insist upon!
Wow. Very illuminating. Possibly the most interesting and de-mystifying video about luxury handbags that I’ve ever seen. Very telling and very disappointing. I’ve sold a lot of Chanel classic flaps simply because they didn’t feel luxurious. I’d get sucked in, thinking that Chanel is where I should be investing my hard-earned money, convinced by the SA that the particular classic flap I was holding was the only one in the country etc etc…. that this was a piece that I’d keep forever. Compared to other luxury houses, their lambskin from the last couple of years honestly feels like rubber. My favourite Chanel bag is a 10-year old piece. I think I’ll only purchase older, pre-loved pieces if I continue purchasing Chanel at all. Thank you for such an educating video.
Thank you so much! I wanted to do my best to just share information in a way that could be easily understood. There are some great leather TH-camrs and obviously plenty of fantastic luxury TH-camrs, but I haven’t seen someone really apply leather knowledge to luxury goods yet.
I get your point but particle board would have been a better analogy, as plywood isn't cheap and has some real advantages over solid wood which warps and splits. The best furniture and construction is made with a combination of plywood, solid wood and veneers. Particle board is pulp. The pink bag looked like fingernail polish remover spilled on to a painted surface- terrible. I would have been sick.
I also found the leather problem in 2022 collections. I got one card holder from 2022 spring summer collection and the corners of it started to ripp off after single use. And you are ture, it is white inside🥲By the way, i have also experienced the stiching problem from my coco handle that i bought 4 years ago, so sadly to say, it is not new things from Chanel. (this year the stiching of this coco handle was broken and i had sent it back to chanel for repairing....) What's more, i also had one bag that the double C logo hardware was missing, it should be glued on the bag but it was missing when i back home😅
Thanks for this timely and informative video. Very topical indeed. It is saddening to see the direction Chanel is heading to. It’s just my wild imagination and I have absolutely no proof / evidence whatsoever and I am not claiming anything, however, I can imagine a cost control mandate from the corporate management and how it translated into a compromise of quality so dire that even the the most unexperienced eyes cannot neglect. Another thought that came to mind was if this potential new bonded leather was more environmentally friendly given the focus in ESR these days. I did a quick online search and I saw arguments for it (recycling unused leather scraps) but it can just be marketing, as I noted equal amount of arguments against it. Either way, for the price being charged and the brand image which a good chunk of the price went to, this is not the elegance we all expect from this house.
Thank you so much! In regards to bonded leather, I would much much prefer it wasn't a thing. Leather scraps can at least decompose in a relatively short amount of time. Bonded leather, since it has added plastics, will inevitably just add to waste in a much greater and long term way 😔
I have that bag in blue the one you have in pink. The 2.55. I have been terrified to use my blue since I saw your comment on your pink. Have you been using it or did you return it? Did the wear get worse? I just hate bags that are delicate.
I couldn't return it so I use it. I will say that I haven't noticed additional wear! I have flirted with selling it, but right now I'm happy to keep it in my collection.
I have seen Coach bags that people have had for a while, and I see that the leather ages beautifully. I don't know if it's true with a newer bag, as I don't buy any of these fancy labels.
I bought a Chanel classic mini rectangular from the 19S collection earlier this year. The bag was made with lambskin leather, in the color light pink, which looks very similar to your pink reissue. I bought it brand new from a trusted reseller, and had it further authenticated, 100% it is original. However, after only 1 day of wear on also light pink clothes, the upper rim of the back pocket was peeled off! It looked like the leather is very very thin, and the pink color is just a painted layer. I believe this is a quality issue, but of course at that point, it was way pass the 30 days return policy, so I decided to keep it, but not happy about it at all.
Great video! I know another youtuber also noted they felt their item felt dehydrated, some small areas on my mini rectangle from 22A felt a bit dehydrated but I still purchased/kept it and applied some leather conditioner which appeared to help. I agree with you that these qualtiy issues are very concerning to say the least. I'm wondering in your case since its a construction issue on your pink reissue (beautiful bag) what would Chanel do to remedy it if it gets worse? Also if you are looking for video suggestions, could you please do a video on how you care/protect your bags especially lambskin? I think most of us have the best intentions to avoid damage above the normal wear and tear but if you have any info/suggestions on what you do to correct anything like colour transfers, scuff marks/abrasion marks, etc.. that would also be great. Thanks for sharing ❤️
Thank you! And you know, I'm going to be doing a Q&A video to talk a little more in depth answering questions, so I'm going to add this to my questions to address ☺️
such an informative video. after watching super dacob video, i get curious to explore leather quality. glad that he mentioned your video! now thinking of it, i think my fossil bag is bond leather... cuz it claims as genuine cowhide leather AND it peeeellll. i was shocked 😭 the bag feels flimsy and plasticky. the quality is so different compared to the one that i bought 6 years ago. mind you i rarely used that bag too, and suddenly it peel?? and i am completely aware that full-grain leather is top quality. but now I'm very disappointed with the brand..
Chanel and Hermes may now be at the same price point, but please do never say they are made at the same level of craftmanship. That is insulting Hermes.
I more meant that they are considered to be in the same "status" range when it comes to luxury brands. For instance, Gucci is also a great luxury brand, but people don't often consider it in the same "status."
My reissue from a few years ago has the same tight stitches but no white peeking through. A lot of the classic minis I’ve seen in stores have the same problem. Very very obvious
I just checked over my 2.55 (225 size) from 21K and it doesn’t have the stitching issues you show on your pink 2.55 mini. I will say that I did notice when I bought mine that when I compared the double flaps to the minis there seemed to be a pretty big difference in the quality, particularly with the stitching. Perhaps the minis are made in a different atelier or they cut corners on them for one reason or another (could be because they’re at a lower price point.) Also, I debated between the 21K dark pink or black but ended up going with black because it just looked better to me at the time - maybe to do with the dying process as you mentioned. Regardless I appreciate you making this video to highlight these issues.
I appreciate you sharing your own observations on your bags! It's a good point that minis might be given less "attention" with them being less expensive.
This is all so absurd. I’m an equestrian and have a lot of experience with leather saddles, bridles, boots and various strap goods. The true quality aniline and vegetable dyed goods will last a lifetime if cared for properly. Those hides come from Italy, France, the UK and there are one or two tanners in the US. Also worth noting, there are now a couple Indian tanners who are doing aniline/vegetable dyed leathers and they are still working the kinks out but have come a long way. Anyway, in the equestrian world, what do the selliers, strap goods and boot makers do when they can’t source quality hides? They STOP PRODUCING and apologize their customers for the delay. They certainly don’t churn out bonded leather garbage because they know their customers handle these items on the daily, and expect them to perform. Indeed, when the leather used for items with which to ride a 1200 lb. animal fails, it can literally be deadly. So my theory is that this is probably why, by and large, Hermès bags are still superior in leather quality to Chanel bags. Hermès is a sellier. They know quality, durable leather even if they don’t use the same leathers for their saddles as they do for their bags. And they’re going to have quite a few overlap customers also - the horsey set who have an Hermès saddle, and also get their Birkins and Kellys. Those horse people are not going to accept a product made from glue, plastic, foam and leather slurry when they know what the real deal looks like from their $12k saddle. Anyway, it’s pretty sad that a luxury house like Chanel clearly feels they can peddle this bonded leather hot garbage to their customers because they won’t face any wrongful death lawsuits, since their purpose is to sit on a fashionista’s shoulder versus controlling a horse. Luxury should always be quality, and Chanel is showing an incredible amount of contempt for their customers.
@@classicswithaquirk yes but to spend that much to have to be careful. I had a purple lamb mini I would only wear in winter with my coat to try and prevent issues. But then I picked up some shoes on a windy day from the cobbler 10 minutes later my dark purple bag had areas of bright pink on it. The bag had brushed the bag and removed the color. I wore the bag for only three weeks. I think it's really stopped me from purchasing
Thank you for the term bonded leather of the plasticly feel of these 5000.00 bags and above price tags. Thank you for explaining the process of coloring and dying different types of leather. Just be careful Chanel do not want their dirty little secrets exposed. I will definitely stick to vintage Chanel bags.
Wow, thanks for the super detailed video! I just binged watched all your videos regarding leather and I've learnt so much. Thanks so much! I also have a question - I have a red Chanel bucket bag from 20P, calfskin, shiny gold hardware. There are metal/leather chains running through the bucket bag to form the drawstring. After less than 4 uses, I noticed the chains had black spots. I took it to Chanel and they said nothing could be done because it's wear and tear (when I open and close the bag). Now, several months later, I noticed that the black spots on the chain transferred onto the bag and the areas where the chains press against the bag are black! I was hoping if you could advise if the transfer is due to leather transferring against leather (i.e. the red color rubbed off so it's black leather underneath and now the black leather is transferring onto the bag). I'm quite heartbroken as this was my first Chanel bag and I wasn't expecting this quality.
I'm so sorry to hear about your bag! That's awful 😩 if it's color transfer you might try using a colorless leather conditioner to gently wipe on the bag and then wipe it off, but if it's been there for a while, the color might have stuck. That's so disappointing. Maybe try contacting Chanel through the website and not the boutique? And see what they say
It depends on your location. The US you have I think 15 days to process a return if the bag is unused, but Canada for instance you can only get store credit and not a refund
what an amazingly detailed and educational video!! thanks for sharing! i only buy chanel preloved (all my leather bags are pre loved because im vegan and dont buy new leather), therefore i can really tell a huge difference when it comes to the quality, when i compare a 10-15y old chanel bag to a newer one its quite drastic imo…the biggest difference is the lambskin leather-vintage lambskin is a 1000times better, more durable and way more luxurious than it is nowdays-back than you dont have a huge scratch in it because your nail touched it and if so it could easily been buffed out-nowdays its super fragile wich makes it difficult to wear and when km buying a bag for multiple thousand dollars i want to wear it whenever i want and dont habe to worry constantly
Hello! I remember us talking before 😊 I def agree that vintage bags are in a class on their own. And such a great option for people like you, who have reasons not to buy new leather pieces. Beautifully made, durable, will last ages, and allows an older piece to continue its lifetime? 👌👌👌
@@classicswithaquirk yes i already commented before on your videos :) i think you have a great opinion on things :) i hope the vintage market will stay how it is and that the prices dont go up insanely because of all the price increases. i think chanel really lost it when it comes to thr pricing, its almost insulting
I’m very interested in seeing how things continue forward.
And all that money they spend trying to get a piece of what the brand has told you all is luxury when people should invest in their own brands. Gabrielle Chanel got her start somewhere too.
Did you know they got $5 billion in dividend payments for 2021? They do laugh all the way to the bank.
People have problems with the chanel bags quality but they continued buying this bags don't complain than you know that quality is poor😬😐, ✨💫🥂
I stopped buying in 2018.
I have 2 Chanel both prelove from 2019 and before… and I’m done with Chanel already… just don’t worth it!
@@LvLove518 totally agree with you 💯
I stopped buying from Chanel in 2016. I occasionally will pick up a vintage item once in a while.
I got a mini Lou at the beginning of the year and I really love it ❤️
I have been thinking about trying Coach, I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about them
coach as amazing leather haha it is true..
There's a leather review chanel that review coach bag and other lux brands and coach leather bags are pretty top notch quality wide.
and now we find out about the reported sweatshop in France that Chanel is/was subcontracting work out to in 2022.
thanks for the info. it's horrendous that Chanel's quality has gone down this much. shame on them!
Thank you for watching!
I think it's just become gready and absolutely don't care about the customers, to me it is disgusting, people paying insane money for peace of💩
Thank you so much for watching and for the food for thought! I'd love to be a fly on the wall observing the production side of things.
That is something to think about indeed 🤔🤔🤔 and not a great thought!
😫😫😫
You’re all gullible is more like it.
I was willing to go over my budget to purchase the 22 bag until I heard the reviews and saw the damage, I’ve changed my mind 100%.
I hope you're able to find a bag you really love that's perfect for you!
I admit I'm a little worried about backlash too. I'm sorry you had to deal with it 💕
Wow. Thank you for this explanation. It’s crazy that Chanel is charging $6k+ for the 22 with these issues, yet limiting what classic bags customers can buy to protect its brand. Protect the brand by improving the quality! Appreciate how you use this forum to cast light on this!
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you so much!
Yeah, I'm finding I'm very happy I got what I did when I did, and like you said, not even just price wise. It's really... food for thought
Until they get their stuff together.
thanks for the info, very informative. Can’t believe that with those high prices consumers are getting this quality of handbags ☹️😠
Thank you for watching 🙏🙏
I wonder if resale values will start to drop. They are getting so much negative press. I feel like I need to sell the Chanel bags I’ve been considering getting rid of, sooner than later.
That's an excellent point 🤔
I think the value of vintage pieces will continue to go up while the recent pieces will drop.
I’ve seen a sea of Chanel bags on the resell markets. People aren’t buying
I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between a new classic flap vs seasonal bags. I'm thankful ppl are shining a light on this bc i absolutely will not buy a new peice from chanel. Id go vintage.
I would love to do a video like that!
Just my 2 cents.
this is definitely an eye opener and i think we have to seriously pay attention to price craftsmanship and materials when it comes to all brands
I agree! I would never seriously tell someone what they should and shouldn't buy, but I would love to help people make informed decisions 🙂
I’ve been noticing this change in their bags as well, and it’s so disappointing!
Six seasons a year is honestly madness.
Thank you for watching! I'd love to get my hands on a 22, but it's not in my budget to buy the bag to destroy it 😅
it'll take so many views to pay for that $6000 experiment....
This explains why all the scratches and wear on my pink Chanel mini is white! It’s definitely painted.
You did a very thorough in-depth good argument, thanks for putting your time and energy into the question, it will help many to be on the look out for quality when purchasing.
Thank you so much!
I could make videos for ages 😅
And to your other point, I mean... Chanel did sell an $800 advent calendar last year that was like 50% stickers 😂
I stopped buying modern Chanel years ago. Much prefer vintage. Excellent video. Thanks
Vintage Chanel is where it's at! I love all my vintage pieces 💕
Again another fabulous video with lots of information. It’s a shame how quickly and on what scale they’re starting to cut corners with quality. 😩😬

Thank you so much! I do have a video comparing YSL, Coach, and Chanel pebbled leather ☺️ and I plan to make more videos!
I'm 100% certain that the leather on the pink reissue bag was painted over. The pores are clearly smoothed out and clogged by the paint!
I thought that also. On the closeups, the paint appears to wrinkle on the top.
I agree, especially looking closer.
I think part of the problem with the 22 is the design. A draw string bag will have stress and weight put on the casing where the draw strings are threaded through the casing. With the 22 the metal and leather straps would put stress on the casing and then add in the weight of items in the bag and then the casing is going to have damage. And if the casing is some kind of leather,
Oh absolutely. There should definitely have at least been grommets around where the chain comes though!
Thank you for this information. These are expensive leather goods and we all need to be aware.
I'm so happy it was informative!
Yes, I covered this a little more in depth in my follow up video to this one. It... Doesn't look good
THANK YOU AGAIN! Everyone should see this
Thank you so much!!
Vintage bags have a sheen. New ones have a shine. Very different. It shines like plastic. It’s sad.
Exactly!
I am so glad I came across your video and channel. I’ve been eyeing some vintage Chanel, and I’ve been concerned about the lambskin. It’s such a shame that Chanel is choosing to decrease the quality while increasing pricing. Thank you for such in-depth insight.
Thank you for watching! If it helps, I do recommend vintage Chanel lambskin ☺️
Thank you, Amy 💕 Which bag are you interested in? 👀
@@classicswithaquirk business affinity small tote - not a popular bag but that's why I like it!
Oh, that's such a pretty bag!
I’m a Chanel girl, but after so many issues I heard f rom everyone, I decided switched to Hermes. So sad!
Thank you for watching!
Love the MESS out of this very informative video!😮👏🏽👏🏽 One of the best videos on leather quality and craftsmanship of bags.
I'm a little shocked at the new Chanel flap bag, and especially Super Dajob's bag😬...

Thank you so much!! 🙏🙏💕
I almost fainted when you mentioned bonded leathers. Great insight as always.
Love ya.👍💚👍👍👍👍
Thank you! I'm doing my best to learn more 🧐
that 'but' at 18:49 was DEVASTATING. great info - thanks for sharing! :D
🥲 it’s not the best ‘but’ is it 🥲
This is a phenomenal video, thank you for making it.
Thank you so much! (And I noted down your question in the other video! I'll answer it in the q&a ☺️)
After watching this video and Dacob’s video, I promptly packed up my new reissue I purchased from Fashionphile and back it went. I am not paying top dollar for a bag that lacks in the quality department. Chanel has become a joke.
It’s such a shame-I wish Chanel would take a better stance on their quality. I feel like they’ve been very silent about growing concerns.
The joke has always been on those buying it. I have cheap perfumes that give better performance than Chanel perfumes so no more for me.

I'm a huge fan of vintage bags myself. The quality of some of these older bags is unmatched
Glad to see you doing better and your back on our screens. Thanks for sharing this educational video and all the knowledge you have obtained from your research. Please keep them coming
Thank you so much 🙏🙏
Thank you for the video which confirmed my purchases so far and that it didnt just happen to a few batches of bags from the look. The taut stitching is pretty prevalent across a few models too : Classic flaps ,(both double and the mini) and trendy cc coz I am speaking for my own bags. The craftmanships has definitely deteriorated. I am suspecting either the artisan bag makers are under production pressure, (or just underpaid resulting in disgruntled workers) despite the massive price increase of the bags) or just a wilful cost cutting measure of Chanel (at the backdrop of astronomical price increase and reported phenomenal profits increase, Chanel is really pushing their luck too far or treating their customers sub par intelligence)
Time to stop buying Chanel and I hope this video gets publicized widely
I've really been noticing the tight stitches in particular in many newer bags as well 😩
This is exactly why I did a major purchase of luxury bags a few months back.
That's an excellent theory, and a good point, about their production 🤔
I love watching your videos. I was planning to get a chanel pouch, but after this i think ill get an alternative from ysl or gucci idk
Thank you so much for watching! I hope you enjoy whatever you end up with 💕
Go for YSL! Gucci has became simply ridiculous 🫠
Great in-depth video with great knowledge, thank you for sharing 👌. We all noticed, that the quality went down, but it‘s super interesting to see some actual „evidence“
Thank you so much!
The leather is going to be damaged. So a design nightmare, in my humble opinion. Good informative vjdeo. 👍👍
Thank you for watching 💕🙏 I'd love to dig deeper into this. I even made a follow-up video doing more research 😅
@@classicswithaquirk Oo will definitely watch, thanks! 💘
Many will overlook the quality for the name. I refuse
I also have the same pink mini reissue and it also has super tight stitching and I noticed it after I got it. My pocket on the back seems very low also, its even but very low.
☹️☹️☹️
The reissue's construction is wild. I'm very shocked.
Especially when I looked at it up close, I was honestly not expecting quite what I found.

I realise you talked about the Coach leather in your past video...
💯💯💯
In my experience, YSL & Loewe has better quality these days. I’d say Givenchy as well, but i only have exp with their antigona.
YSL and Loewe are great brands!
Just sad
☹️☹️☹️
I mostly was talking about the leathers used in terms of quality disparity, but you're very right in that people have been noticing significant quality issues for several years now 😔
Very informative and unbiased video thank you so much! For a top luxury brands to go down this road, and feels justified to charge their customers top dollars, we as customers need to think twice! When u pay this much money for a bag, you should at least expect that to be long lasting, and made with the best quality materials and craftsmanship, accept nothing less.
For sure! I certainly don't expect perfection, but when I think of luxury, I do think of quality.
Hello! Very informative video. I would love to hear your thoughts on other luxury brands quality of leather. 💜
I plan to make more videos!
😱😱 I'm so sorry (and sad) to hear about this!
Bonded leather, since it has added plastics, will inevitably just add to waste in a much greater and long term way 😔
love the scarf behind you🦋💙🦋
Thank you! It's an Hermes scarf that I picked up last year. I love it 💙💙💙
I have that bag in blue the one you have in pink.
Wowwwwww this was so knowledgeable and informative! Thank you so so so much
I have seen Coach bags that people have had for a while, and I see that the leather ages beautifully. I don't know if it's true with a newer bag, as I don't buy any of these fancy labels.
I love the quality of vintage Coach! Some of their newer bags I haven't been as enthusiastic about 😅
I bought a Chanel classic mini rectangular from the 19S collection earlier this year.
😱😱😱 I'm so sorry that happened! What a shame 😩
@@classicswithaquirk Thanks, and also thank you for your informative videos
I was saving up for my first brand new Chanel. I could cry. I cannot buy this low quality…
I'm so sorry! I wish Chanel would go back to their older quality standards.
@@classicswithaquirk Me too, thanks for this video I love when you drop the knowledge like this!

@@classicswithaquirk Thanks for adding this to the upcoming Q & A : )
such an informative video. after watching super dacob video, i get curious to explore leather quality. glad that he mentioned your video! now thinking of it, i think my fossil bag is bond leather... cuz it claims as genuine cowhide leather AND it peeeellll. i was shocked 😭 the bag feels flimsy and plasticky. the quality is so different compared to the one that i bought 6 years ago. mind you i rarely used that bag too, and suddenly it peel?? and i am completely aware that full-grain leather is top quality. but now I'm very disappointed with the brand..
I'm sorry to hear about your bag! I will be honest, I have not been impressed with fossil products in the last few years
Great video! Thank you. Learning so much.
Chanel and Hermes may now be at the same price point, but please do never say they are made at the same level of craftmanship. That is insulting Hermes.
Calm down 🤦🏾♀️
@@misstomi89 it is never my intention to be rude I am sorry if a comment comes up with different tone, I intended.
I more meant that they are considered to be in the same "status" range when it comes to luxury brands. For instance, Gucci is also a great luxury brand, but people don't often consider it in the same "status."
100% agree, Hermes is Hermes ! IMO Celine quality is even better than Chanel nowdays.

Thank you for watching!
My reissue from a few years ago has the same tight stitches but no white peeking through. A lot of the classic minis I’ve seen in stores have the same problem. Very very obvious
It's something I've really been paying more attention too
I just checked over my 2.55 (225 size) from 21K and it doesn’t have the stitching issues you show on your pink 2.55 mini.
Do you find the vintage lambskin to feel denser than the current lambskin?
Wow you are doing God’s work thank you for this in depth explanation. I hope Super Dacob responds to this video
Thank you! I think he did end up doing so!
I enjoyed this video a lot, it’s very informative. Sadly in 2024 their quality still hasn’t improved despite the exorbitant price.
Thanks for the video. I enjoying learning more about handbags outside of “consumer level details”. I will watch your leather series.
Thank you!
I had that pink bag in blue and was terrified to use it. It did not seem like durable leather.
I am definitely conscious of it and try to be quite careful.
😱😱😱 that's terrible! I can see why you would hesitate on buying .
Thank you for watching 🙏❤️
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Are Chanel bags directly purchased through the manufacturer returnable?
It depends on your location. The US you have I think 15 days to process a return if the bag is unused, but Canada for instance you can only get store credit and not a refund
I absolutely love your attention to detail. I found you from Super Dacob.
Thank you!
what an amazingly detailed and educational video!! thanks for sharing!
i only buy chanel preloved (all my leather bags are pre loved because im vegan and dont buy new leather), therefore i can really tell a huge difference when it comes to the quality, when i compare a 10-15y old chanel bag to a newer one its quite drastic imo…the biggest difference is the lambskin leather-vintage lambskin is a 1000times better, more durable and way more luxurious than it is nowdays-back than you dont have a huge scratch in it because your nail touched it and if so it could easily been buffed out-nowdays its super fragile wich makes it difficult to wear and when km buying a bag for multiple thousand dollars i want to wear it whenever i want and dont habe to worry constantly
Hello! I remember us talking before 😊 I def agree that vintage bags are in a class on their own. And such a great option for people like you, who have reasons not to buy new leather pieces. Beautifully made, durable, will last ages, and allows an older piece to continue its lifetime? 👌👌👌
