  • Echo SRM-225 String Trimmer Test and Review Update - so much power!

    I previously posted an unboxing and initial review video of the Echo SRM-225 2 cycle string trimmer / weed eater / weed wacker a couple weeks ago. Now I have ran a couple tanks of gas through it I have a better idea of how it handles and the power it has. This thing RIPS through grass like it's nothing! Considering this is Echo's entry level "prosumer" grade trimmer it still has more than enough power for regular maintenance trimming around your yard. I highly recommend anyone looking for a new gas trimmer to give the Echo SRM-225 some serious consideration, and at a great price point of around $200 it's quite a bargain!
    Also a shout-out to Kite Army, be sure to check out his channel! He gave me the idea of testing with cutting cardboard, I did it mostly for fun but it was still an interesting test :)

    I liked this for 2 reasons: (1) I own a PAS 225 and (2) you remind me of my youngest son.

    Lol, I like how you found a way to position yourself to utilize the 12 O'clock to 6 O'clock trajectory of the trimmer. Mabey everyone should train with shorts on. IQ is just as important as experience. The SRM 225 spins counterclockwise, The GT 225 spins clockwise, same exact motor. It is more comfortable trimming with the counterclockwise rotation but the GT is mega light and my preferred weapon of choice, even though the SRM has much nicer handles, kind of rubbery and comfy and the tank guard as well. What's annoying on the GT is the handle likes to spin and walk around on you because its only pinched by one wingnut as apposed to the 4 torx screws and split cap for the SRM handle. Those little things are a big deal with a lot of use. SRM parts are easy to get on ebay to upgrade the GT anyhow. Perfect trimmer for you I'd say, being a bit taller than I.

      Haha if it’s above 70 or so degrees I’m in shorts all the time around here 😆 I’ve gotten my fair share of grassy legs over the years lol. Haven’t tried the GT 225 but it also sounds like a great trimmer. It’s personal preference I guess, can’t go wrong either way. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      While the same engine on the GT-225 and the SRM-225, there is no comparison in quality differences that will make someone thankful tbuyibgvthe SRM...the hand grip is better, the handle is better, the engine has a better clamp to secure it to the drive shaft, the reach is superior, the unit is better balanced, the gearbox cuts through tougher materials due to the gear reduction, you can put brush cutter blades on it or even take the gearbox off and put on other attachments (not manufacturer recommended but doable if you don't have a PAS unit-look up Steve's Small Engine Saloon he puts hedge trimmers on a straight shaft trimmer this way)

      @@kirkthebeerslinger You are absolutely right, But the trade of is weight. Doing a yard is one thig but 21 acre farm and you are going around in circles to keep up, the lighter GT is kinda sweet. Exhaust mod, get rid of the guard and run 8 inch whips instead of the 5.5 and you can cover some more ground also. I envy the rotation the most. It's important to note that the shaft tubes are not the same size, the SRM is of a larger diameter. I also run the pre cuts, I cut my own to a specific lenght i should say, no speed feed, it's also the lighter option, plus it hold up solid on, in and around all the stone walls.

    *Good trimmer,🌱 **allabout.wiki/Echo** I string my own line onto spool to save money and this trimmer seems to use less line than my former trimmer...does the job except for super thick St. Augustine runners on curb. Would love a shoulder strap so that I would have to use less arm strength to hold upright with my disability.*

      Glad to hear it’s worked well for you! I’m on my third year with it still on original spark plugs and air filter! Just put fresh gas in it and keep using ethanol free premium fuel and it will last for a long time 👊 thanks for watching!

    In your video you said you didn't even use full throttle...while I agree you don't need to run wide open throttle WOT when trimming around trees and other delicate items-I would recommend you give your unit plenty of WOT by feathering it and even revving it up when not cutting - SRM-225's have a bit of a reputation for sputtering oil out the exhaust and any small 2-cycle unit will get carboned up if you don't run it WOT and get it good and hot...carbon build up will lead to poor performance, difficult starting and reduced lifespan of the unit and the exhaust components - requiring more maintenance to clean spark arrester and spark plug as well as cleaning out the exhaust port...run her hard - that's what it was designed for...use non ethanol fuel and the correct 2 cycle oil at the right mix and your Echo will last a long time!

    I just got this same trimmer. When I squeeze trigger all the way it bogs down. I then have to let go and squeeze the trigger slowly and it works fine. Does yours do this? I'm thinking about taking it back and exchanging it.

    • @kirkthebeerslinger
      @kirkthebeerslinger ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you may need a carb adjustment (these are possible to do yourself - there are some TH-cam's on how to do it)...or you may have a blocked spark arrester/dirty air filter or spark plug...check those first...easy fixes! I have a video that shows how to do all three if you like!

    • @DIYDad1
      @DIYDad1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Austin Nurishmi yeah it is probably just the break in period where it uses a lot more fuel. It seems to be better now after I’ve put a couple of gallons through mine. Also I don’t go full throttle when I do edging I only go about half throttle and that seems to help a little bit as well.

    • @DIYDad1
      @DIYDad1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just when I was cutting through the cardboard at the end lol. @ 7:42. That was a fun test but definitely not scientific. Since then I ran another tank through it and took that little brass plug off blocking the high jet adjustment screw. Gave it a quarter turn out and I think it revs a little higher now than it used to. I think it sounded a little weak here when i gave WOT. Although for regular weekly maintenance trimming WOT isn't necessary all the time.

      @@DIYDad1 they increase power after arouns 5 tanks of gas. Echo products are always set to lean from factory for EPA reasons. Do full throttle then hit what ever it is you are cutting like the cardboard. Will get better results.

      @@calebwillhelm2635 got it! I'll give it a while for full break-in and then re-adjust and tune. I've heard the same thing from people that they really open up a lot more once fully broken in. Amazingly 21.2cc for being on the smaller side is still plenty of power under normal conditions, luckily I'm not smashing through tall brush on a daily basis. Love the light weight of this thing.

And you warm your weed wacker up for minutes !? Lol u obviously don’t have a clue about motors. Ya let er idle for a solid 30 40 seconds and then let it rip. It’s putting out about 1 horsepower. your not cold starting a gsxr1000. It’s a godam weedwacker. And the fact that you worded the mix like that tells me your a straight goober. She runs 40 ta 1. That’s all that have to say man.

      minibike madman lol yeah I read somewhere that you need to be gentle with the starter on these because it has the easy start recoil starter and supposedly if you yank on it too he’s you could wreck the bearings in the starter. Of course it still starts pretty easily even with a gentle pull. I think they call it the I-30 and the I-75 starter.

      @@DIYDad1 you are correct...one only needs to pull any piece of equipment hard enough...if it takes too many pulls there is a problem with the unit...should be 3-4 cold and one to two max warmed up ...
