Been mowing and string trimming since i was 10. i have literally never used a stick edger. always used a trusty weed whacker for everything lawn maintenance. and ill tell you what you guys in Michigan definitely know your grass. That kid is 16 and really does know how to control that weed whacker. I know guys that take years to get that good. and some never do. Honestly so many techniques to a string trimming like connor says. But the most important thing is that when you start on a property that you are consistently doing something from start to finish. Not always about speed. but consistent clean cuts. Honestly wish i had a kid like that on my crew.. hes a beast for his age and really shows a passion for mowing. much respect

I mean it's a good video, but at the end of the day it's not EDGING. It's just trimming grass near the edge. This video is on edge MAINTENANCE

My God, so many experts!! This guy has a smooth pace and has developed HIS WAY of doing it. I have been using a steel blade stick edger for 20 years now and that is MY way. Just as fast and yes, I can lean it away from the concrete too. Whoopee do.
I learned how to flip edge when I first started mowing a couple of years ago. It's so much faster and gets a much better result on already established edges. My technique is to have the powerhead under your elbow with it resting on it. It allows me to go both forward and backward and be quite precise with both directions.

I have one trimmer set up with the Edgit Pro spooled with .080 Husqvarna Titanium Force to get even crisper detail. This attachment also makes it easy to trim around light bank work or around utility stations, allowing you to help match the same height of cut of your mower instead of traditional trimming where you may scalp in these areas. By far the best investment for any trimmer.

To avoid the line wrapping around my hand when re-stringing, I just stand behind the head when I’m winding it instead of facing it. It took me a long time to figure that out. 😂 I still learn new things on my own all the time but when I watch TH-cam videos, it’s a crash course-great that y’all pass your knowledge along-thanks!
Yeah you gotta stand to the left of the head, spin it w your right hand and hold the top part still with you left.. took me awhile to figure that out too 😂
I just bought my first gas trimmer, echo srm 225 and for that young brother to edge as fast as he does in almost one pass is freaking incredible. Kudos to ya bro, do your thing!!!!

Good work by the young guy. Even better is the attitude. He's teachable. He'll go places. I've got a Ryobi I prefer flipping it (like the young guy does)and turning the handle around too so I got a steady grip and I walk backwards most of the time.

This wont edge your lawn. It'll trim the grass near the edge. That's not edging though. Edging literally digs into the root system and provides a very distinct cutoff line for the entire lawn. This video shows you how to trim the fine top layer of grass, leaving a massive amount of dirt and roots underneath completely UNtouched. Which means it's not edging.
Thanks to you and Blades of Grass, I started doing it last year. Or maybe it was the year before that. Best moment was when my wife looked out the window one morning and remarked how good the lawn looked with a sharp edge along the driveway. There's a motel near where I work that has a beautiful garden, regular lawn service, ...and unedged grass growing into the sidewalk and over the curb. I just want to take my edger in one day and clean it up. For some reason, edging isn't done by the lawn services around here (PNW).
Great tip about paying attention to the direction the head is spinning & not running full throttle. I used a 19v trimmer for years. My recent upgrade to a 40v resulted in me shattering my storm door. Which honestly, I’m grateful it was only that and not a car or house window.

Beginning of the season or on new edges I use my stick edger with the golden edge blade. All trims after that I use my string trimmer on the concrete side walking forward. I find that when I walk backwards I have a lot of missteps on my part which makes uneven edging. Great video. Very informative.
When I edge the racetrack, I use a string trimmer because the asphalt is so uneven a stick edger won't work anyway, and because of this I've gotten pretty good at it and now I enjoy the challenge.
I’m glad I saw this, starting up my own solo lawn care and I saw another video a gentleman said the black diamond string doesn’t edge well, his edging looks very clean, guess it just takes some practice and getting use to. Great video.
Love it we do that all day long here in FL. I will say walking backwards In grass will give you more of an edger like angle and everything sprays away from you especially if it's a mulch bed. If you use stick edger one time get that line formed it's easy to edge with the weed Wacker weed whipper thingamajig. Keep up the great work guys.
If you note in the video, he actually has blade edged that sidewalk. No dirt comes up when he trims yet there's a very visible dirt line from where a blade edger did most of the work. If it was truly being edged from scratch, there'd be dirt everywhere and he would've had to change string like 3 times or more.
I'm in Florida and don't like flip edging against concrete. I do however love this technique to clean up grass-on-dirt border lines or to keep a sharp finish on a waterline.
Hard work is rewarding in so many ways. This dude! I find that when I flip edge my trimmer sometimes stalls out on me cuts because of the tank being flipped upside down while it's running. I have an echo edger too and use it mostly and clean up most of the dirt left behind by the edger with the trimmer, before I blow everything. That's why I always edge first then trim.

Pretty good video. I started doing this without anyone telling me about it.. (replacing the edger). 20 years ago.. I just noticed that I could do whatever using a weed whacker. This happens when you get a high level of confidence using the weed whacker, then you know you can make straight lines even when you're running.
I'll frequently use a blade edger then go back over it with a string trimmer just to sharpen the edge up. And I think if you're a homeowner you should probably get a blade edger first. String trimming edges requires doing lots of yards for practice, and it's easier to get a consistent result with a blade edger for somebody who doesn't have that many hours to practice and perfect the technique.
For the first like 15 seconds it sounded like he was going to bullshit his way through it just the tone, then all of a sudden his confidence hit and his brain said "wow I actually know a lot about this shit" and the words just started spewing out. Def bring him into more videos, good for him and you'll foster that passion as well and have a hell of a worker. True bosses spot strengths in their employees and provide them opportunities to excel with them. Awesome vid.
I put an edge on the initial cut, to establish the trench and line, clean it out really good with the blower, and maintain the edge with the trimmer. In Texas we got that black gumbo clay soil in my area, so if it ever rains the soil expands and I have use the edger again to clean it up.

I just feel like the stick edger gives a more consistent and clean edge. It’s always the same and no flaws. No waves, not too wide of an edge. So for me I think the edger gives a better result
Obviously it gives the better result but it doesn't constantly need to be edged with it. No lawn is 100% perfect without weeds, cracks in the sidewalk, road debris, slopes, etc.. it's about maintaining it with a steady hand with a string trimmer.. you still need to string trim regardless so what's the point of this comment?

I was new to lawn mowing and purchased a mower, trimmer, edger etc. together. It took me a few rounds to get used to the trimmer. I feel it is more convenient to get trimming and edging done in quickly instead of taking out a new tool, swapping batteries, etc. It takes some attempts to know your trimmer especially the balancing part.
Great video. I use an edger the first cuts of the month and flip edge the other weeks. I perceive the edger is more crisp. So I like to tighten it up and clean out the grooves at least once a month. I know weird... 😂 Much props doing it in shorts. I haven’t mastered that yet!!! Great job!

Nice job. When I edge, I walk backwards on the sidewalk. It keeps the edge really clean. Also it keeps your edges straight up and down as opposed to cutting from the grass side when you get a slight angle. Either way it's your preference to get the desired look. Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
If you got the skills then string trimmer but only while walking on the grass side, it puts a slight angle to it that provides my cleanest look here in NE Florida. I also like how the string trimmer allows you to choose the gap size. When I'm mowing a weekly lawn I have the string just touch where I need it to and get a laser edge, where the stick always leaves a little more space than I prefer and churns up a lot of earth. Stick edger is great for super super size lawns, newbies and for cutting through serious overgrowth. FYI, If anyone is still reading I ran over my beloved Stihl trimmer with my mower and went and bought an EGO carbon shaft battery trimmer as a backup, I have not looked back, hearing only the string against the grass took me next level. There is also a huge advantage to be able to grab it wherever and not worry about getting burnt. Long story short, I feel like a cyborg now when I string trim.
A couple of comments: 1.) I am glad to see you are wearing eye protection especially without the edge guard. I highly recommend the edge guard even for professionals! 2.) There are 2 big problems holding the trimmer lower: a) You put a low of support on your elbow and over time that crap hurts b) the angle of your cut is not 90 degrees and is more of an angle. Great work! Just thought I would mention a couple of things! :)
Really wish manufacturers would either reverse the rotation of the head, or have an option to do so. How the 'pro' models got standardized to spin counterclockwise and 'homeowner' grade trimmers do it in clockwise is beyond me.
I have a Husqvarna with the two piece staft. You just switch out the trimmer head for the edger head. Works for me. After seeing this I'm gonna try to edge with the trimmer only. Great video 👍👍😀

I use both the edger and the trimmer. I start with the edger and clean it up with the trimmer. I am just a DIY guy who works on my lawn when I get the time sat after coming home from work and depending on the weather. I try to keep nice edges especially on the outside near the sidewalks
Love your edging mate 👌 totally agree if your guard is off you don't need to use as much power, otherwise your likely to have the cord come off and hit you in the face, I always have guard on can still edge better than most people, what you guys call a weed whacker, I call it a brushcutter in Australia, and keep the longer hair mate!
I've done this for years. Same method - upside down and walk backwards (depending on head rotation). Key is to move quickly to avoid digging/pulling and have a good amount of thread available for a precision line. I'm just using a basic Echo trimmer but my lines are super sharp.
Stick edger only for overgrown edges and then string trim to maintain. It’s much faster to flow from string trim edging to trimming around trees, low spots, bed edges etc. I string trim edge from all angles and here’s the list from most preferred to least: 1) walking backwards on the hard surface 2) backwards on the grass 3)forward on the hard surface 4) forward on the grass Feels really cool when you can flow from 1 to 3 or 1 to 4 without missing a beat. Like Conner said, walking forward you’re fighting the string, and on the grass you have to look over the grass edge to see your line (it’s harder to see your gap) If you learn multiple ways to get a job done you’ll be faster than if you only know one
Yup, I’ve done this for 20 years. Difference is as a homeowner I don’t go nearly as fast, because I’m purposefully trying to dig out a little more soil in that edge for drainage. Plus I’m working with St. Augustine grass which is a wide blade heavy grass, so it’s a little harder on the line. And yes, I do it 95% while standing in the grass and the pavement in front of me. I have the engine high above my shoulder near my ear so ear protection is a must. Cool video!
I learned to flip edge like Connor. Walking on the driveway/sidewalk. I feel that I have better visibility of where the line is cutting if I am looking at it from this perspective. I'm pretty much holding the trimmer to where its perpendicular to the ground - left hand on the loop handle and right hand controlling the throttle. I find the fast I walk, the more crisp the edge is. It does take some practice to get this down and to see what feels best to you. If any of you are trying this for the first time, be patient and expect to make some mistakes along the way.

Flip edger. Just started doing it and learned here that there’s a name for the technique. Works great. I can’t say I broke the bank on the trimmer. Just a black and decker 20V cordless. Works great for the property. May invest in something better but it’s ok for now
I have a Stihl FSA45. It may be Stihl’s low end model, but I love its versatility - the shaft can the rotated & the head pivoted so it converts it from a trimmer to an edger. I mainly use it walking backwards as it’s less harsh on the bump guard, but using it forward cuts it a little neater, with less need for a cleanup.
Well I found out the grass is much softer than the concrete. After tripping over my own feet a few times I decided to just buy the edger. I'm like a bad dancer with bad foot work. You guys are real pros.
It is a treat to watch Conor navigate with that trimmer, As a homeowner I need to make some adjustments as I get as much clippings on myself as the curb lol .
Definitely Stihl string trimmer for edging. Lasts us longer than Echo's do. Flip edge. Prefer to be on the driveway side rather in the grass. Hard for me to see the line the other way. . Self taught. Wish I had seen this 10 years ago. 20ish lawns a week. Not a professional, but for an old lady, I think I could give Conner a run for his money. Nice job, guys!
I’m a homeowner and I edge before I mow currently using an Ego straight stick trimmer.Two passes, first normally in a plane parallel to the grass. Then flip edge . I prefer to walk backwards in the grass but the way the cars get parked there is a little bit that I have to do walking backwards on the pavement. My guard is on and I always wear safety glasses (actually my DeWalt sunglasses). I think the two passes makes a nice crisp right angle edge but I know the pros probably don’t do that. I am originally from Long Island and everybody edged. But for 40 years I have lived in WNY. I always edged and just recently in the last couple of years several of my neighbors are edging as well. It really makes the neighborhood look nice and finished.

Carpel tunnel will catch you quick. You need the weed Wacker that you can lock the gas on.

I've got a Ryobi I prefer flipping it (like the young guy does)and turning the handle around too so I got a steady grip and I walk backwards most of the time.

Not about lawns, rather his passion is about cars. I say all this because you remind me alot of Jacob! You're a great young man, you're humble, yet you speak and present yourself with confidence. You clearly have a good head on your shoulders.

This wont edge your lawn. It'll trim the grass near the edge. That's not edging though.
Edging literally digs into the root system and provides a very distinct cutoff line for the entire lawn. This video shows you how to trim the fine top layer of grass, leaving a massive amount of dirt and roots underneath completely UNtouched. Which means it's not edging.
Thanks to you and Blades of Grass, I started doing it last year. Or maybe it was the year before that. Best moment was when my wife looked out the window one morning and remarked how good the lawn looked with a sharp edge along the driveway.
There's a motel near where I work that has a beautiful garden, regular lawn service, ...and unedged grass growing into the sidewalk and over the curb. I just want to take my edger in one day and clean it up. For some reason, edging isn't done by the lawn services around here (PNW).

Great tip about paying attention to the direction the head is spinning & not running full throttle. I used a 19v trimmer for years. My recent upgrade to a 40v resulted in me shattering my storm door. Which honestly, I’m grateful it was only that and not a car or house window.

Beginning of the season or on new edges I use my stick edger with the golden edge blade. All trims after that I use my string trimmer on the concrete side walking forward. I find that when I walk backwards I have a lot of missteps on my part which makes uneven edging. Great video. Very informative.

When I edge the racetrack, I use a string trimmer because the asphalt is so uneven a stick edger won't work anyway, and because of this I've gotten pretty good at it and now I enjoy the challenge.

I’m glad I saw this, starting up my own solo lawn care and I saw another video a gentleman said the black diamond string doesn’t edge well, his edging looks very clean, guess it just takes some practice and getting use to. Great video.

Love it we do that all day long here in FL. I will say walking backwards In grass will give you more of an edger like angle and everything sprays away from you especially if it's a mulch bed. If you use stick edger one time get that line formed it's easy to edge with the weed Wacker weed whipper thingamajig. Keep up the great work guys.
Gotta trim from the grass side when possible. Gives that slight angle to the grass away from the sidewalk.
If you note in the video, he actually has blade edged that sidewalk. No dirt comes up when he trims yet there's a very visible dirt line from where a blade edger did most of the work.
If it was truly being edged from scratch, there'd be dirt everywhere and he would've had to change string like 3 times or more.

I'm in Florida and don't like flip edging against concrete. I do however love this technique to clean up grass-on-dirt border lines or to keep a sharp finish on a waterline.

Hard work is rewarding in so many ways. This dude! I find that when I flip edge my trimmer sometimes stalls out on me cuts because of the tank being flipped upside down while it's running. I have an echo edger too and use it mostly and clean up most of the dirt left behind by the edger with the trimmer, before I blow everything. That's why I always edge first then trim.

Pretty good video. I started doing this without anyone telling me about it.. (replacing the edger). 20 years ago.. I just noticed that I could do whatever using a weed whacker. This happens when you get a high level of confidence using the weed whacker, then you know you can make straight lines even when you're running.
I'll frequently use a blade edger then go back over it with a string trimmer just to sharpen the edge up. And I think if you're a homeowner you should probably get a blade edger first. String trimming edges requires doing lots of yards for practice, and it's easier to get a consistent result with a blade edger for somebody who doesn't have that many hours to practice and perfect the technique.
For the first like 15 seconds it sounded like he was going to bullshit his way through it just the tone, then all of a sudden his confidence hit and his brain said "wow I actually know a lot about this shit" and the words just started spewing out. Def bring him into more videos, good for him and you'll foster that passion as well and have a hell of a worker. I put an edge on the initial cut, to establish the trench and line, clean it out really good with the blower, and maintain the edge with the trimmer.
In Texas we got that black gumbo clay soil in my area, so if it ever rains the soil expands and I have use the edger again to clean it up.

I just feel like the stick edger gives a more consistent and clean edge. It’s always the same and no flaws. No waves, not too wide of an edge. So for me I think the edger gives a better result
I am with you on this. Only time I edge with a weed whip is around flowerbeds.
Obviously it gives the better result but it doesn't constantly need to be edged with it. No lawn is 100% perfect without weeds, cracks in the sidewalk, road debris, slopes, etc.. it's about maintaining it with a steady hand with a string trimmer.. you still need to string trim regardless so what's the point of this comment?

I was new to lawn mowing and purchased a mower, trimmer, edger etc. together. It took me a few rounds to get used to the trimmer. I feel it is more convenient to get trimming and edging done in quickly instead of taking out a new tool, swapping batteries, etc. It takes some attempts to know your trimmer especially the balancing part.
Great video. I use an edger the first cuts of the month and flip edge the other weeks. I perceive the edger is more crisp. So I like to tighten it up and clean out the grooves at least once a month. I know weird... 😂 Much props doing it in shorts. I haven’t mastered that yet!!! Great job!

Nice job. When I edge, I walk backwards on the sidewalk. It keeps the edge really clean. Also it keeps your edges straight up and down as opposed to cutting from the grass side when you get a slight angle. Either way it's your preference to get the desired look. Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
You don’t have to walk backwards change hands and walk forward
If you got the skills then string trimmer but only while walking on the grass side, it puts a slight angle to it that provides my cleanest look here in NE Florida. I also like how the string trimmer allows you to choose the gap size. When I'm mowing a weekly lawn I have the string just touch where I need it to and get a laser edge, where the stick always leaves a little more space than I prefer and churns up a lot of earth. Stick edger is great for super super size lawns, newbies and for cutting through serious overgrowth. FYI, If anyone is still reading I ran over my beloved Stihl trimmer with my mower and went and bought an EGO carbon shaft battery trimmer as a backup, I have not looked back, hearing only the string against the grass took me next level. There is also a huge advantage to be able to grab it wherever and not worry about getting burnt. Long story short, I feel like a cyborg now when I string trim.
A couple of comments:
1.) I am glad to see you are wearing eye protection especially without the edge guard. I highly recommend the edge guard even for professionals!
2.) There are 2 big problems holding the trimmer lower: a) You put a low of support on your elbow and over time that crap hurts b) the angle of your cut is not 90 degrees and is more of an angle.

Really wish manufacturers would either reverse the rotation of the head, or have an option to do so. How the 'pro' models got standardized to spin counterclockwise and 'homeowner' grade trimmers do it in clockwise is beyond me.

I have a Husqvarna with the two piece staft. You just switch out the trimmer head for the edger head. Works for me. After seeing this I'm gonna try to edge with the trimmer only. Great video 👍👍😀

I use both the edger and the trimmer. I start with the edger and clean it up with the trimmer. I am just a DIY guy who works on my lawn when I get the time sat after coming home from work and depending on the weather. I try to keep nice edges especially on the outside near the sidewalks

Love your edging mate 👌 totally agree if your guard is off you don't need to use as much power, otherwise your likely to have the cord come off and hit you in the face, I always have guard on can still edge better than most people, what you guys call a weed whacker, I call it a brushcutter in Australia, and keep the longer hair mate!

I've done this for years. Same method - upside down and walk backwards (depending on head rotation). Key is to move quickly to avoid digging/pulling and have a good amount of thread available for a precision line. I'm just using a basic Echo trimmer but my lines are super sharp.
Stick edger only for overgrown edges and then string trim to maintain. It’s much faster to flow from string trim edging to trimming around trees, low spots, bed edges etc. I string trim edge from all angles and here’s the list from most preferred to least:
1) walking backwards on the hard surface
2) backwards on the grass
3)forward on the hard surface
4) forward on the grass
Feels really cool when you can flow from 1 to 3 or 1 to 4 without missing a beat.
Like Conner said, walking forward you’re fighting the string, and on the grass you have to look over the grass edge to see your line (it’s harder to see your gap)
If you learn multiple ways to get a job done you’ll be faster than if you only know one
Yup, I’ve done this for 20 years. Difference is as a homeowner I don’t go nearly as fast, because I’m purposefully trying to dig out a little more soil in that edge for drainage. Plus I’m working with St. Augustine grass which is a wide blade heavy grass, so it’s a little harder on the line. And yes, I do it 95% while standing in the grass and the pavement in front of me. I have the engine high above my shoulder near my ear so ear protection is a must. Cool video!

I learned to flip edge like Connor. Walking on the driveway/sidewalk. I feel that I have better visibility of where the line is cutting if I am looking at it from this perspective. I'm pretty much holding the trimmer to where its perpendicular to the ground - left hand on the loop handle and right hand controlling the throttle. I find the fast I walk, the more crisp the edge is. It does take some practice to get this down and to see what feels best to you. If any of you are trying this for the first time, be patient and expect to make some mistakes along the way.

Flip edger. Just started doing it and learned here that there’s a name for the technique. Works great. I can’t say I broke the bank on the trimmer. Just a black and decker 20V cordless. Works great for the property. May invest in something better but it’s ok for now
I have a Stihl FSA45. It may be Stihl’s low end model, but I love its versatility - the shaft can the rotated & the head pivoted so it converts it from a trimmer to an edger. I mainly use it walking backwards as it’s less harsh on the bump guard, but using it forward cuts it a little neater, with less need for a cleanup.

Well I found out the grass is much softer than the concrete. After tripping over my own feet a few times I decided to just buy the edger. I'm like a bad dancer with bad foot work. You guys are real pros.

Definitely Stihl string trimmer for edging. Lasts us longer than Echo's do. Flip edge. Prefer to be on the driveway side rather in the grass. Hard for me to see the line the other way. . Self taught. Wish I had seen this 10 years ago. 20ish lawns a week. Not a professional, but for an old lady, I think I could give Conner a run for his money. Nice job, guys!
I’m a homeowner and I edge before I mow currently using an Ego straight stick trimmer.Two passes, first normally in a plane parallel to the grass. Then flip edge . I prefer to walk backwards in the grass but the way the cars get parked there is a little bit that I have to do walking backwards on the pavement. My guard is on and I always wear safety glasses (actually my DeWalt sunglasses). I think the two passes makes a nice crisp right angle edge but I know the pros probably don’t do that. I am originally from Long Island and everybody edged. But for 40 years I have lived in WNY. I always edged and just recently in the last couple of years several of my neighbors are edging as well. It really makes the neighborhood look nice and finished.
