When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. I worked in at an ace and we sold a lot of these and like you said sometimes they're bad or people don't want them so I've got to play with them some and Ive found you can get some decent results from them. So on the engine head you can mill the top side of the exhaust port and all the web from the fuel transfers except the bits that make up the wall along with the perspective sides of the bottom end of the cylinder wall as well as modifying the head gasket to move more fuel and then get rid of the catalyst and the screen😂 in the muffler and open the exhaust gaskets up along with the exhaust vector to move the fuel out faster and its sure to gain some rpms, takes about a half hour 🎉🎉

I'm pretty happy I knew where you were going after the compression test.
While I've done a lot of work on small engines, I never really did a flowchart ( even in my head ) for diagnosis, since I work on my own stuff only I would skip around because I knew my compression was good or my gas was good etc.
From time to time a neighbor will have problems with their stuff and this gives me the outline to follow for them. Excellent video! Thanks!!

Thanks a million for your advice on all the recommendations on my old stihl trimmer, its back to life after I added a new carburetor and tuneup kit and the cause of it still not running was a clogged screen on the muffler. So I temporarily burned off all the carbon and got it running 100% and ordered a new filter for it. Thanks for all the help
I’m glad I found your channel. I own a lot of Echo equipment which I’ve had for well over 10 years with no problems. But this was a learning experience for me. Never really knew there was an exhaust filter but now I do and maybe I’ll clean it tomorrow if necessary. Thanks for the troubleshooting tips. Really enjoy your videos they are very helpful.

Thank you for these videos! I have a Stihl FS 94R weed trimmer that was doing the same thing except mine would ckoke itself off. I was told by a Stihl authorized technician to change the carb. I did and still had the same issue. I called him up and told him it was still doing the same thing. After some more troubleshooting the last thing he told me was to check that screen. I never knew these small engines had a screen so i never thought to check the muffler! I wish he had a told me before I bought a brand new carburetor to check that! I'll be subscribing to your channel now. Thank you.
I worked as a front line employee in tree care industry for years. The Echo climbing saw were standard issue for entry level workers, and all the use and abuse that that entails. Those saws took it well.
I just stumbled across you channel and seen your video about throttle up issues. My echo had that issue and I put new plug and filter and gas to no avail,ugh. Then I seen your video and checked the exhaust screen and sure enough,that was it. I am now addicted to your channel. I love the way you explain everything and easy to understand. Both my 225 and 266 units had clogged exhaust screens causing the same symptoms. Cleaning them fixed the problem. Thanks for the video.
I had a similar problem with an AL-KO string trimmer. The muffler was also clogged, but not because of carbon deposits, but because of insects that had nested in the exhaust. It took me some time to figure that out. I follow your channel in Germany and I think one can learn a lot from you.

Know that you are an inspiration that shows that you don't have to be a male to know about mechanics. Remember Kim LaHaie (now Kim LaHaie Richards)? Thirty five years ago she was the Top Fuel Crew Chief of the Year for 1987 and an inspiration to many thousands of young ladies that were able to see that women truly can excel in any arena.
YOU ROCK! You saved me $100! The small engine repair shop couldn't figure it out...they put on a new carb, but were nice enough not to charge me anything. Your tutorial led me to my completely clogged (zero light coming through) screen. The brake cleaner didn't clean it, so I used a thumb tack to scrape all the gunk off. Presto! We are back in business. THANK YOU!

I would like your opinion on my Echo SRM 225. It is 6 years old and got to the point it would not rev when started, and was getting harder to start.
So I cleaned the carburetor, changed the plug, and spark arrestor. It still wasn’t revving so I checked the compression and it was 60 pounds. So I thought about it a couple of days and decided to go ahead and rebuild it. I was going to put in a new piston and ring and cylinder. I found that the new echo short block was cheaper than parting it out. So I put in the new block and I also put a new carburetor on. The fuel lines are new as is the filter and plug.
It ran like a champ and used it 2 times on my yard.
I was going to use it today. It starts with no issue but it took about 10 minutes before I could get it to rev up. After it warmed up it ran great. I am at a loss of why this is happening. Also I have adjusted the carburetor via pulling the brass plugs. I had it really running great.
But today’s performance has me wondering what the heck I can do to eliminate this issue.
I run Echo red armor in ethanol free gas.
I wished my would run on a cold start like the one you fixed in this video.
Sometimes I wished I had just bought a new unit. But this has been a great trimmer and saved $85.00 to $100.00 over the new unit.
If there is anything you can suggest I might check or do I would sure appreciate your input.

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
I'm a small engine mechanic, some echoes have a scorned piston and still have compression. U can easily tell just by pulling the rope, I've done hundreds so maybe it's easier for me to tell by comparing it to others. Awesome video.

This is the reason why I only use Amsoil saber 2 cycle oil at their suggested 100:1 ratio.
I know it sounds crazy (I thought the same) but I’ve been running a trimmer that had this exact problem, but I had already bought a new one so I figured if the old motor let loose from the 100:1 ratio, I still had me new trimmer as a backup. 5 years later, I still have the old trimmer and new trimmer, both running 100:1 saber oil.
More importantly, I have to point out how awesome Chickanic’s channel is.
Every conversation I have involving lawn equipment, I just tell the person to watch this channel.

I have a SRM 2100 For a very long time. Still works great. I like using Klotz oil in it. Smells great. Love your work.
Chickanic makes an EXCELLENT point about removing the plug wire (3:15). I just screwed up my Echo SRM-225 plug wire connection because I didn't gently twist the boot back & forth until the plug connection loosened up. I ruined the the connector, and had to jury rig a connection in the boot after replacing the plug to get it running again (sure wish I'd watched this video first!). My lesson sadly learned, I removed the plug wire correctly when I serviced my Echo PE-230 edger! I also gave a quick shot of dialetric lubricant in the boot to improve the electrical connection and ease the removal of the spark plug boot in the future. Love watching and learning from the videos! As a legally blind guy I no longer care to fiddle about with 2 cycle engines… they are way too finicky. I used to buy the cheapest string trimmers and use pump gas and never do any thing except run the crap out of them and use them for 6 or 7 years before having issues.At some point I decided to get a good one and use alcohol free fuel and it helped none,second year start having issues, so maybe it’s like u said fuel now days does not last. 4 cycle stuff works well just 2 cycle ones are always problematic. It’s kind of fun and satisfying working on them but now I just want to get work done without working on the machine constantly. For this reason I’m going electric but still enjoy the channel keep on rockin!!!
Hello Chickanic, i'm no mechanic but i tinker around with my weed wacker doing routine maintenance. Recently my stihl fs120 after 5 years started working crappy, won't come up to full revs, so i checked the clutch, good, cleaned the carb, no difference, changed the fuel filter, no difference. I did not check the muffler because it does not come with a spark arrestor screen. I finally took the muffler out, out of desperation. Lo and behold, oil poured out of it and the pipe was halfway blocked. I cleaned it out and bam, i got full revs immediately. Of course all of my frustrations went away, lol. I will not take this exhaust thing for granted anymore. You are indeed an inspiration, and your vids are spot on.

Hello Bre, at my ripe old age of 68 I sort of figured I had all the tricks of the trade under my belt. I started repairing air cooled 2 and 4 stroke engines way back in 1972. @@georgedavall9449 Your Absolutely correct on all points!! I thought that Tru-Fuel video was ridiculous. I've been using Tru-Fuel for as long as I can remember with 0 issues. I've left it in my mower, tractor, weed eater and back pack blower the entire Pa winter and all of them started right up. I just think that we support these channels they can at least take a few seconds and acknowledge us.
i know this is an older video, however, your information lead me to a problem that i was able to fix as well. i purchased at auction a pas225 that had the same symptom of not throttling up. I failed to remember to check the exhaust first and ordered a replacement carb. Changed the carb had no improvement. sleeping on it i woke up and said i think Chickanic made a video on this, searched, i'll be darned, she sure did. Thank you so much for your info. My trimmer/edger is running like a maniac now.

I had a clogged screen (Stihl) and was able to burn off the gunk and brush it clean. Not that they are expensive, I just didn't want to drive 15 miles to the store to get one and got my work done much faster. After it happened the second time, I wised up and never have had that problem again.
I have an Echo straight shaft trimmer for the past 14 years similar to the one you changed the exhaust screen and never had any issues as I always did run it at full throttle, did the proper gas/oil mixed, used only ethanol free gas and did the regular maintenance (air filter, gas filter and spark plug) and still work like a charm.

Had the same problem with a ryobi,did everything,checked clutch,switched carbs from another machine,cleaned plug,changed gas mix and no change.had to buy another machine (time constraints).today I did exactly what you did,the screen was blocked,had to carefully use a wire wheel to get the dried carbon off,also cleaned the entire exhaust housing.After ,the machine ran perfect. I have a Shindaiwa trimmer that is 22 years old and still runs great. I saw a head that you promoted and switched to that one, but the original was still functioning fine.

I fix one my friends echo trimmer by cleaning the screen, 1 by replacing the coil and my own Sthil by cleaning the screen thanks to your videos. Nothing like Chickanic from Arkansas.
I did a tune up kit but still had the bogging problem. The spark arrestor was my issue. Thanks for making your videos and making them easy to understand. You Rock!
I bought an old Echo blower at auction recently. It had been stored dry. Put 40:1 in it, primed, and it fired up and ran. They are nice well built machines.
All my Echo’s require 50:1 mixture. You may want to research that unless the blower specifically states 40:1.
@@deepsleep7822 I am in the school of thought that these machines were engineered for 40:1, but manufacturers list them at 50:1 as a concession to the US EPA. I have two identical snowblowers manufactured 1 year apart, the older model has 40:1 in the manual and on the gas cap and stickers. It’s 1 year younger brother with the same Tecumseh engine is 50:1. 12.5 ml per 500 ml mixing bottle vs 10.0 ml per half liter. I believe that extra 2.5 ml is good protection. Many older machines were 40:1. If I have to clean an exhaust screen occasionally, so be it. Mfg knows more than the anti internal combustion political hacks at the EPA, IMHO. YMMV.
You'll find that Echo products are the very best of them all out there. I have a Echo weed eater, bought since 1999, and at 2022, still running like new. What's that tell ya?

Yes, if the piston is toast and the rings, they are fairly easy to replace as compared to a Husqvarna.
Congrats on 100K! I have an Echo PE-2400 I bought in '92 or '93 and its still running strong.
After watching this one I went into the garage and cleaned anything I had with a muffler screen. I am glad I did because my chain saw was definitely just about clogged. Thanks again. Love the puddy cat in the vids also. I have two.
I'll tell you what I like about Echo chainsaws. They're way easier to start than some other saws. Looking in your direction, Makita.
carpenter I work with has no trouble at all starting his makita chain saw. he presses the safety, pulls the trigger, and it goes.

Watched the video last night. This morning I spent 3 hours cleaning the screen brushing with degreaser and hot water over faucet. (Screens @ HDepot come in a little kit @ $45.) Gave it a TLC treatment, all around as the video explained , you saved me money, I appreciate your information.

The local guy who goes through the garbage took my Echo so I dug this old Hitachi out of the trash and after a few years of struggle it runs so so but like the one you just fixed mine won’t throttle up. I’m going to check the screen on the exhaust.

Good Morning Bre: Excellent video as always. I ran into the same pluged exhaust condition on my Red Max trimmer. Took off the muffler cleaned it all out with brake cleaner, reinstalled it & now it runs like a raped ape. My best to you & your hubby, TMP from N.J.
The exhaust screen is also used for the purpose of arresting spark and potential flames. It could be hazardous to omit it
Which is, of course, why there is a fine for shops omitting them.

Thank you so much for this video. I cleaned mine, but it took way too long to get it well enough to try back on. I tried brake cleaner with a toothbrush which didn't work much so tried a harder brush and finally got most of it clear. While in town we dropped by the Echo dealer shop and bought the last one he had. For $ 2.14 I'm hanging on to it and know what to correct if the same problem in the future comes up. He also said to run it at full throttle so burns the deposits off. Best weed eater I've ever had. Thanks again, Jeff P.S. My Echo is a PAS 225.
A muffler removal to see through the exhaust port into the cylinder is enough, no need for an endoscope of even a sparkplug view. If any issues are seen, it's worth pulling the cylinder off to see what's actually going on. Great video as always, I agree with you, the EPA standards for ALL 2 stroke tools is just crap (I understand the use of them in high fire hazard areas like California). Luckily I live in Romania so all of our 2 stroke tools here in Europe don't know what a spark arrestor is.
Everyone who works for the EPA (really, the entire US govt) are complete, incompetent fools. How about those expensive new "leak proof" fuel cans. They don't work, they leak, what a joke. Everybody rips off the EPA crap and Jerry rigs them to get them to work. The EPA obviously NEVER used a fuel can.
If your customer has several of these trimmers he must rely on them for his work. It just seems to me a serious lapse for him not to bring each one in turn to you of annual maintenance where he could avoid having 3 machines down at one time and just work more efficiently.
Planned vacation maybe...or maybe thats 3 of 12..?
@@3DWHIZZ Still don't change the sense behind it. Slack off on the maintenance then you are in break-fix mode. Always a loosing proposition.
@@uni-byte that may be the point at which he brings them in for repair. May never need more than 4 or 5 at a time. This would save time and fuel costs. I don't claim to know how he does things, not sure why you think you do...

Now imagine a large landscape company that has a number of crews, all using 2 or 3 trimmers.
I have an Echo SRM-210 that is 17 years old and still runs great! I've ethanol free gas since new. Excellent little trimmer.
I have an Echo PAS 2620 that starts up and runs fine for about the first 30 minutes. Then it bogs like this SRM 225 did. I've only run it on Ethenol free mid-grade fuel mixed with Echo Red Armor oil, 50:1 as directed. Fuel lines, filter, bulb, plug, air filter all look fine, and remember, runs fine for about the first 30 minutes. I'm out of ideas what to look for. Well, except maybe the ignition is overheating, but I'm not sure how to check that. Idles fine but won't rev.
I have 1/2 an acre to clear, and need my trimmer to run more than 1/2 an hour at a time. :D

I've been out of the industry for probably 15 years now, glad I could still nail the diagnosis when you were first running it outside. (As I'm sure you did too.)
I bought a Stihl weed eater, had it for years, quit working so I took it in to have it fixed, they told me it was dead.

I have the same SRM 225, love my echo, best investment I ever made. had it for several years, today three quarter trimming my grass, it just died, would not restart. I checked the gas like you always do in your videos and it was fine, pulled out the fuel filter, I didn't see much but went and replaced that anyway, went to the muffler screen next, unscrewed the five T27 screws, one of the screws broke in half, it was so tight, the screen was fine. Put the screen back together but only could use 4 screws because of the broken one. Next went to the air filter, well that had a lot of soaking fuel on the lower half. replaced the air filter with a new one. Went next to the spark plug, woe a lot of oily carbon, replaced that with a new plug. Put gas in the tank, primed, choked, and it started right up. you video really got me through this. thanks so much for sharing your skill set.
Thanks very much for posting this solution!! I had done most of the tests but did not know about the exhaust blockage problem .... that is what it was in the end. The model I have does not have the mesh it has a small port in the side of the muffler which was solid with carbon so that was it.

I watched the video and found my screen was clogged with carbon buildup. I burned it off just as you instructed and now my trimmer is back up to speed. (I should add that using a lighter flame didn't work--I had to use the stovetop burner to get the screen red hot before the carbon would burn off.) THANK YOU, Chickanic!

Fixed my issue, I was getting ready to go buy a new one. I have probably replaced 3 for the same reason. Just shows you someone who know what they are doing saves money.
225s biggest issue is the spark arrest screen clogging up. I know you are not supposed to take it off but I did when my screen got clogged, fixed my issue right away. I upgraded to the 2620 pas a month ago and it's running really good I love the filter assembly and the torque that the 2620 puts out. BTW the difference is you have to comply with epa rules, as customers it's either commercial users or residential users. If I was doing heavy commercial use I would put a new 👉spark arrest screen👈 to prevent fire hazards, however since I do my neighbor and my yard with the 225 pas I leave it off because I don't put a lot of hours on it like I do my 266 SRM or my 2620 pas. I do all my repairs on my own so no worries about repair shops having to panic over modifications or changes like that screen being removed. Most of the time on the 225 and 266 it's going to be the screen but the newer models have better improvements which reduce the carbon and oil buildup on the screen. If you own a 225 or 266 check your screen once a month, also if you can afford it buy premix fuel instead of mixing it yourself. Gas pumps have been known to short you on fuel which can make the mix to rich.

I bought a SRM2100 way back in 1993. It is now just needing a fuel tank kit for new lines, filters and gromet. Echo makes great trimmers.
Good day Chickanic, it is weird how the world works, I was walking around a flea market last Sunday and came across a similar trimmer, the lady wanted $15.00 Canadian for it, she said it doesn't run. Well I took it home and put clean fuel in it and it started right away but wouldn't rev up, I came across your vid this morning, then went out and checked the screen on the exhaust, sure enough it was plugged solid. I have a Tanaka pole saw that was doing the exact same thing. It would start right up but when you hit throttle it would just blubber and not rev up. The gas had a good smell but took the carb apart anyways and was clean. Took it to the dealer and he found a bad coil after checking the exhaust. Good video!
excellent , great info. , but the only time i had to adjust a carb. was when i went from sea level to mountain," 2000 ft above sea level" to get max performance. your channel is one of my favorites . Thanks , i am a diy on most everything .
