I mean, in every clip you showed he was enraged when you cut his tail. You have to cut it off while he's exhausted, and there can't be any meat around. And it's still a low chance. I'll try to get a clip of it in 3rd. Through where could I send it to you?
Lore wise, 100% a Deviljho would absolutely eat their own tail, it makes sense considering they'll eat anything. It's just odd that it hasn't been added as a mechanic for him in the franchise yet.
What upsets me the most is for years I have prided myself on informing friends and new players about the ins aand outs of Monster Hunter and all the unique details, secrets, exploits, tactics, and lore. The fact that I have spread this bit of misinformation despite never seeing it happen is saddening. It also just makes too much sense and would actually be badass. I remember telling people to make sure they carve before he eats it.... Damn me!
@@BackroomBandit It's most likely other players were placing meat inside tail. I remember always placing meat Everytime Devil Jho went to a new zone back in MH3U. Many players did this. There was probably a portion of the MH community who would put it inside the tail and so people saw it happen and now nobody can replicate it because the players who were doing it aren't playing MH3U anymore.
I love that this feels like something a research team of monster hunters would do. Countless hours of observing and hunting one species, just to figure out if it will consume its own flesh or not.
He eats his tail and them you lose your carve and dont get any itens, them you made a rare drop that you can only get from his tail with a 6% drop rate and you need that to do basically every weapon/armor piece he has and even some other weapons from other monsters
I feel like Deviljo eating his tail was just something Capcom said as a lore description for it. Kinda like how in Pokemon, a pokedex entry will say something like "This pokemon flattens mountains" or "This pokemon eats people's dreams" but we never actually see them do it, we're just told that they CAN do it.

Has anyone considered that hunters would be extremely pissed if they wanted the material from the tail but he eats it, making that pretty much impossible while batting you around first and using a Jaggras Great sword?
I just figured the Deviljho would "eat" the tail with a munching animation, but leave the actual tail there for hunters to carve, like how most monsters' corpses persist so you can get all the materials from them
That's actually what people used to say when I heard it ate its own tail. They'd say when fighting the pickle and you cut its tail, carve asap or it will get eaten and you'll lose your chance 😂

the deconstruction of the portable 3rd clip is the most insane detective work i have ever seen. the way you deduced the exact cut they made out the meat texture to achieve the same pixel arrangement in your own simulation is straight up mind blowing

this myth is actually really similar to what we have back in mhfu times. there is a longsword named centenarian dagger which in the description says "is able to cut lao-shan lung's tail" but no one actually did it

I feel like I am being gaslit, because I have multiple very vivid and distinct memories of seeing Jho eat his own tail in solo hunts in Tri, and no. There were no popo, ludroth, aptanoth or anything else underneath the tail he would have been eating instead. I've lost carves to this guy eating his own tail. I got into the habit of mid-fight carving BECAUSE of Deviljho.
I, too, remember this vividly from as far back as monster hunter 3 tri. I stopped to watch it because it was the strangest thing I'd seen up to that point. No monsters nearby, no multi-player. Just a wild Jho. I, too, got in the habit of carving anything that dropped because of this guy. Though that was due to getting carted lol. For me the first time was area 5. Hell, he even shows it on the map there.
Mine was in tri also. Quropeco called him in and I fought both for awhile and I got his tail off, and after getting exhausted he eats it. I haven't seen anyone get a jho exhausted for this experiment.
This story blowed my mind. I played monster hunter 3 ultimaite when I was still a kid. At the time, I never watched any video on the subject and never read the description of monsters. However, I was sure I had seen the Devijo eating his own tail.
I am pretty sure this is a "reverse Mandella" effect because I also remember seeing Jho eating its own tail, in MH3U, without any prompt other than being fatigued and in the same area as its tail when it happens.

This is mind blowing. I have a distinctive memory of Deviljho carrying his tail off when I was trying to carve it in World. He also killed a Kulu ya ku during a capture quest. It was already limping and he just picked it up and started slamming it against the walls and I was powerless to do anything until it was dead
@@meodrac But... In every MH Game that i played, the tail of a monster cant despawn until the monster itself despawned after it was defeated. Like in a multi hunt quests a monsters corpse will despawn after a set amount of time and at the same moment the tail despawns, too. So if the deviljho was still alive there is just no way that it could have despawned, except if it belonged to another already dead deviljho in a multi quest...
The part you brought up at the end with the client side small monsters is actually really interesting. When me and a friend of mine were trying to get it to happen in GU, there was a moment where we were clearing out velociprey so they wouldn't interfere, and he was attacking one that was nowhere near him on my screen. I think this perfectly explains why so many people swear they've seen it, they technically have, it was just an illusion created by multiplayer desyncing instead of natural, intended behaivor.
No I've definitely seen it happen in single player haha, Though he has to be exhausted with no meat sources around. HOWEVER it has been removed in newer games so he probs wont do it anymore.
@@jordanlopez942 I'm guessing what I seen was what he described desynced dead creature or a body creatures normally eat from was under his tail. Considering how big his tail is and how many times you run into him/ have to farm him. It's likely this would happen to a few people and get the rumor started. Again especially because i've never seen it happen in any other game he appears in. And in other games you fight him significantly less in significantly more diverse areas which considerably drop the chance of this humorous accident happening. Tbh I forgot I even made this comment lol

I wonder why no one's tried decompiling Tri and reverse engineered the sections for Jho eating things. Feels like it'd be easier than testing manually for weeks and combing through every piece of footage that exists

It has to be easier than Nintendo and people have cracked those games to edit the game files for BDSP just to look and edit the broken calculator in the German version. Games this old typically have very simple programming languages with low security in comparison to modern systems.

I’ve always believed in that Deviljho could eat his own tail as a rare thing to see. Similar to how a Seltas Queen can kill and eat a normal Seltas! She only does this when certain conditions are met and even then it’s a very rare thing to experience! That what I always thought about jho eating his own tail, it’s just a rare thing to see.

In all seriousness, you need to find an expert MH game ripper which then can research and dig into all of jho's movement animation and values to confirm whether or not jho had an exclusive feature like that. The alternative way is to find the guy who worked on jho and ask if did he or did he Not add something for jho to eat his tail.
The developer way probably wouldn't work, Monster Hunter game developers are infemous for spreading mis information, adding stuff in future game or hidden updates, just to troll the community
I'd genuinely swear on my life that I saw it happen in tri back when it was still online. It was in area 2 on flooded forest near that log where you can gather the frogs. I genuinely can't imagine that being made up, unless one of the other players put meat in the tail all the way back then.

Although we have found out that he likely does not eat his own tail, something that is true is that this rumor and word of mouth fact has existed since Tri's release and is not due to the NHC productions video. The rumor really is completely tied to how Deviljho was presented to us and it's the main thing that made people believe he can do it.
You know, mentioning small monster desync actually gives me an idea. What happens if the host kills a small monster and has it land on top of the tail on his screen? For other players, the small monster will be elsewhere, so where does Deviljho go to eat in that instance? Plus, when Deviljho eats something, you become unable to carve it, right? What happens when Jho is visually far away from the thing that it's eating? Does it cancel the carves of the small monster miles away, or does it cancel the carves of the thing closest to Jho? This is no longer about eating the tail, but there are mysteries still to be solved...
Something to realize, people: Deviljho's tail does not have the same properties as prey animals that Jho can kill and eat, or the meat hunters drop. It's part of the monster instead, as a severable piece. That means Jho couldn't target and eat it even if it were possible.
This is a mind screw I swear I remember fighting a Jho in 4 Ultimate and I cut its tail off and before I could carve it the Jho began to eat it preventing me from getting anything from it and I was so upset about it because I needed a Jho tail to craft something.
Speaking of false memory/mandela effect, mine is very peculiar because it was not preceded by myth or hearsay. Back when i was around 9-10ish years old (yes i was that young when i first played MH on PS2) i vividly remember, to this day, that my weapon got stolen by a melynx. And when i tried to attack the hunter just does this "shrugging off" animation. I even remember the specific area where it occurred. And since i've never seen it mentioned anywhere before i just shrug it off as my overactive imagination
i had it happen on psp during the desert area on freedom unite and i literally thought it was my imagination awhile ago because it seems like no one else metioned it. somewhat think it was damaged copys of the game stealing item - weapon number rather than stealing item - bag codes couldve got damaged due to the discs my freedom unite was a 2nd hand and was indeed scratched to hell.
@@frasercake another Capcom game were weapons disappear is the old god of war 1-2 if your game disc was too scratched to load the next zone properly (our just too scratched) upgrading your weapons will make then disappear and not do damage except for moves that spawn a secondary hit box like plumes of Prometheus or the tackle combo.

He eat's other tails, just not it's own. In Tri or 3u (can't remember which), there is an even quest to hunt 2 deviljho. If you cut one of the rail of the 2 monster... There is a chance the other will eat it. (And yes this is confirmed true) The problem is, the jho that the tail was cut off from will never eat it.

I have one instance where, while I don't have it recorded, I do have all 3 of my hunting party at the time as witnesses. In 3 Ultimate, we were fighting Jho in the Tundra. No meat was down and there were no other monsters in the area, and Jho started noshing on his tail. You'd think that he's just biting a hunter, but no, all 4 of us were freely moving at the time. It was the ONLY time I ever saw it happen. One of us was running a stamina depletion build with the hammer, Jho had gotten to the extreme hunger state (which if you know MH mechanics, you know there are normally 3 degrees of hunger for the monsters, 1 mild hunger, where the Monster will find a reliable food source in the area, but still has energy to fight, 2 moderate hunger, where the Monster will travel to a nearby zone in search of a stamina source 3 high hunger is usually after a Monster goes into and out of rage, normally retreating by a few zones in search of a much larger stamina source. Jho is the ONLY Monster that has a 4th level of hunger, extreme hunger, very difficult to get him into it, he has to rage multiple times and be prevented from retreating. If his tail is severed at this point, Jho has the ability to cannibalize his own tail to regain his stamina.
God i love the monster hunter community. The monsters; their story, the weapons and armors; their play styles, the lore, schraide kingdom, mechanical dragon, wyverian egg, and now deviljho tail. Cant believe i used to avoid these types of games because i was afraid of the monsters and i didnt know how to use the controls.

Deviljho ate its tail for me ONCE in more then 1200 hours in generations ultimate and I remember It because the carve was gone and all and i was pretty mad. At the time I didn't know It was such a conapiracy, had i known I would have recorded.

Same for me in mh4u. Spent over 1500 hours playing it. I saw deviljho eat its tail at least 3 different times on me. Maybe it was implemented in the later of the series as they wanted to troll players back then?
I swear I have seen deviljho eating his tail back in the Tri days. It could be that the monster's tail dropped on top of already existing meat. It was over a decade ago now so I'm not certain, but just my two cents. I was with 3 other randos so it could be one of them put meat down under the tail just to play a prank. I remember being very surprised to see him eating his tail, and I also can't recall it ever happening again.
I have seen people put meat down to make it look like he was eating his own tail several times before hearing about this. I always took it as an in joke, only hearing about this as a big thing in the past few days. That may have fed into people thinking they have seen it happen not knowing what people were doing.
As someone who started with World and stayed/stays out of the communities. When I fought jho in the introductory quest I remember severing his tail and him running around eating things. Then suddenly his tail was gone. But I'd never seen a tail cut despawn before so I just assumed he ate it when me and 3 others failed to locate it. I don't imagine stuff like that helped.
My first time playing monster hunter world back in 2018 i was doing a quest in the wildspire waste, i dont remember what the quest was which could be an important part but i put it on gods life that i saw devilhjo pick his tail up in his jaws shortly after i severed it. It was in the center of the map where there is an landbridge and kestodons, however i never kill and and they were on the opposite side of the bride still cowering. What i do know for sure is that it was not a devilhjo quest and all i was trying to do was get a devilhjo material to try and see if it unlocked his armor for me to see. Believe it or don't the choice is yours, but i saw it happen, just not him gnawing at it like he does to pinned hunters or placed meat.
I witnessed a Deviljho eat its own tail on a quest once. I forgot the name of the quest, but it's a special quest in MH3P where you slay it with no equipment. And I'm a hunter who does not bring any raw or tinged meat on hunts because my inventory space is filled with combo books. Try making it idle once you cut off its tail and hide near it without carving it.
Yeah, i totally thaught i remembered him eating his own tail back in 3 and 3U but it totally could have been an instance where the downed small monster wasn't there on my screen. I even remember telling friends about him eating his own tail. Best Mandela effect to ever grace us😂
I started playing in Gen, andy first exposure to it was some endgame players dragging my noob butt around on endgame quests. We were fighting a savage Jho, and when someone cut the tail off, they were like, "hurry, go and carve before he eats it!" So I did. And then I always made sure to grab the carve quickly. And I told the generation after me to do the same. It's so crazy that it was always false
Same thing happened to me back in 3U. One of my friends told me to hurry and carve the tail before he ate it. I had hunted Jho offline before that and never saw him eat his own tail, but I figured it must be an online thing; and so I've had that in the back of my mind until the present day, without ever actually seeing him eat his tail.
15:45 Funny you mention this because I believe this is exactly what happened with the Poogie question. I recall reading an interview in which one of the game's leads stated in no uncertain terms that petting Poogie does nothing.
As a player from MHtri from way back in the day (at least on the wii) it was very common to place para meat or other types to prevent other players from carving the tail while the fight was happening. This could be where the misconceptions arise

The deviljo will eat its own tail but only under certain circumstances: - it will if it is hungry and in the same area as its tail. - if it leaves the area where its tail was and comes back it won’t eat it. - if you carve from the tail it won’t eat it. - if it loses hunger and gains it again it won’t eat its tail the second time around, if it misses its first chance it won’t eat it or try. - if you stun, trap, mount, punch the bastard into seeing stars or make it flinch it will not eat its tail but you will piss him off. - if it is enraged and then becomes hungry it won’t eat its tail. I had experience climbing the ranks in mh4u until G rank Gold, it was in this period fighting with teammates when I first saw the deviljo eat its tail for the first time. Me and my friend were dumbfounded and scared when it cured its hunger by eating its tail, I kept an eye out for this same occurrence and it seems it’s AI is very strict with when it comes to eating its own tail (but for reals it’s AI is very strict with the requirements).
You know i absolutely have vivid memory of similar things happening in 3u. I remember cutting off his tail and him lunging at us, then immediately turning 90 degrees back to his tail to eat it. It didn't disappear though as I'd expected. That said, with common knowledge of his appetite there was absolutely meat on the ground in a few spots and it could have landed on one. Beyond that I'm sure there were small monsters to eat as well. Very strange having such a vivid memory of mine challenged. But also love how much work the community, and yourself have put into this. I remember Deviljho running from me in Moga Forest in 3U. He was exhausted and he went to area where we fought before (area 5) and there was his tail laying almost at the very center of that area. He went straight for it and that's how I remember it lol.
I don't even know that devil jho eating his tail is a myth, not after watch this video. Cuz i have that same vivid memory when i was playing mhp3rd, i see him eat his tail. But now i'm start doubting my self abt that memory, strange xD
there would have to be some kind of flag on the game object that would make it consumable. so if some one could use a resource editor to read the flags on the things DJ can eat, vs the things he wont eat, then look at the tail object (my guess is there's a separate object when it's on the ground) to see if it has that "eatable" flag.

For some reason I have a vivid memory of seeing a video of Deviljho using a unique animation of picking up his own tail in his jaws, and then start gulping it down like a stork or a snake, removing it from the environment cuz he just swallowed it whole. I have never been able to find this video, and I'm half convinced I dreamed it.
it was a Deviljho vs Savage Deviljho special quest, and halfway thru killin th first one, his tail comes off and then Savage Jho climbs from underground and eats the tail.
I feel like this is something I've seen happen, and yet now I'm second-guessing myself. I always jumped right to carving the tail in fear it'd be eaten, but I guess I don't need to do that? Probably what makes this myth so widely believed is that it feels like it would be true. If Deviljho can eat dead or sleeping large monsters, then if anything being able to eat its own tail feels more believable than those things it can actually do.
I've played 4U for at least at thousand hours, I can literally offer my right hand to the Elder Gods, because I've saw a Jho eating his own tail when I was little
Same for me in 3u, I cut the tail in the right forest zone on the volcano map and I got really mad because I wanted his gem and it took the carves from the tail.
I think the reason why Deviljho doesn’t eat its own tail is because the tail is part of its model and would maybe require special tags for it to be eaten. Maybe Capcom’s team couldn’t figure it out
My brother and I started with Tri, and never seen him eat his tail. We heard stories from other players in Loc Lac about this phenomenon, but never cared about it one way or another. I think the dev just misspoke in their excitement, and the only way this story can end now is one of the “researchers” in World’s sequel saying the same thing, but Deviljo still can’t eat its own tail.
As someone who played a ton of monster hunter with friends. Here is what happened. You'd cut off deviljhos tail and newbie friend would go to carve it mid fight and end up getting attacked by a random small monster like a Jaggi. Kill said Jaggi then carve and return to the fight. However small monsters were NOT synced so deviljhos would go over and eat the small monster and look like he was eating his tail. The end. Only works if the host is the noob.
The double jho quest in the arena actually has not them eating their own tails but eating each other’s tails. It’s a rare occurrence but it happens. That’s as close as we can get legitimately.
There's no evidence that the jho will eat each other's tails until it is proven that it happens. We can sit here and say "Oh I swear that's happened before" or "there's a low chance of it happening, I swear", but science doesn't care about any of that. It wants proof If you've got a clip for me then I'd be gladly proven wrong
@@TheMarlz2 sadly no don’t have mh3u anymore but it occurs when in the quest. It’s pretty much the jhos eat things not if their body parts but of other monsters. Like seeing the small jho eat the big one’s lopped off tail or vice versa.

I've without a doubt in my mind, seen a Deviljho eat his own tail. It was in tri on the volcanic map more specifically in area 4. Unless someone rips apart the behavior data and can show me that there is no such behavior, or unless several devs come out and say that they never programmed it to, I am going to continue to believe that Deviljho can in fact eat its own tail.
Wilds gonna bring in Deviljho as a DLC and the cutscene gonna be him charging in to disrupt another hunt when you cut the target monsters tail, then another cutscene triggers if you cut his tail off during the hunt and he eats it
Back in the the day when I put over a thousand hours into tri, I ran sword and board. When deviljho came I vividly remember him eating his tail when you severed it, and tried to carve it IMMEDIATELY after. He would push you out the way, then start monchin. I remember using my hello kitty keyboard to type to other hunters warning them NOT to carve after severing tail cuz he'd eat it. I know you said you did a BUNCH of testing, but did you consider that an option? Stay Awes9me

@@miguelcabreracastro6968 Because evidence shows Deviljho does not eat it’s own tail. As a weird example I misremembered Eggman and Sonic’s first scene with each other in Mystic Ruins. Sonic Adventure. My false memory was me thinking Sonic and Eggman claiming this is the first time they met in that scene. Finally replaying the game years later from initial play through I realize its not the case. They say nothing of the sort.
I swear I saw this when I was starting out high rank in 3U on the WiiU I was in the middle of a glacial agnaktor quest, deviljho showed up and scared the hell out of me. I was starting to get used to long sword, and managed to cut off the tail. Cha-cha and Kyamba were getting his attention, so I went for a tail carve. As I was carving, he walked up and ate it! I got the text "nothing was carved" or something along those lines.
i too remember seeing this phenomenon, my friend also remembers seeing this too. perhaps some programmers might be able to take a look at the A.I. of jhos in different games and see if there's anything there that would say [these circumstances -> eat tail] type stuff. i specifically remember seeing this in game when i was young, older, and in world as well. Edit: perhaps easier than trying to look at jho's ai, do tails allow monsters to eat from them? like there is code on meat so that the ai knows it can go and eat. does jho's tail have that? also does anyone remember jho eating CAPTURED monsters? i feel like ive seen that too.

The tail has to be a first carve Gem for him to eat it? You have to be wearing a specific set of armor? The Jho has to be a specific super tiny size range?
There's a 2 Deviljho quest in MHP3rd and I remember seeing it happen, but I guess I'll have to play it again to check. Since now is way easier to record it, probably I'll.
Maybe what I remember is seeing one Deviljho eating the dead Deviljho, but if that's the case, Deviljho didn't eat his own tail, but he ate another Deviljho.
Random question but; I recall seeing Deviljho eating his tail IN WORLD/ICEBORNE rather than the old games, could it be that they actually made that into an actual feature after Generations Ultimate?

ideas to test: 1. maybe he only eats the tail after it's been carved, as a way to prevent feelbad partbreak item loss 2. maybe he WILL eat OTHER monster's severed tails, and the announcer simply mistakenly assumed it also applied to its own.
I vividly remember in 4U doing the first (?) quest that has Jho as a target. It specifically was in the Prumal Forest. I remember cutting it's tail in the area between the waterfall area and the area with the jump in it. I cut it's tail and forgot to carve it because I was too invested. It ran to the jump area, got hungry there, and ran back to the midway between the two. I remember putting down tainted meat to get it to eat it, only for it to ignore the meat and go straight for it's tail. I distinctly remember the feeling I had watching that, being surprised as it, and being upset bc I couldn't carve it's tail.
My friends and I were once going to hunt the pickle for the first time in our lives in MHp3rd... Our Longsword user (Who was horrible at cutting tails btw) miraclously cut the Jho's tail We saw it fatigued and the drooling animation has appeared so we naturally thought to attack it while weakened Much to our Surprise when it actually Went and Ate its Own tail Man...that moment was truly amazing and Horrifying to us
I want to believe this so freaking much. But all evidence that has surfaced in these past weeks points towards us being the victims of a Mandela Effect. He should be able to eat his own tail. Not just because the Capcom guy from 9 years ago said so, but also because it makes all the sense. And yet... Nothing. No undoctored clips have surfaced after weeks of searching. Granted, the limited options to record stuff aren't helping, but really? With what probably amounts to thousands of hours across the whole community gone into this? It was a beautiful urban legend while it lasted. Or gruesome, given the subject matter. Either way, I hope MH6 includes this to reward us all for our patience.
I'm 100% certain I have seen Jho eat his own tail in the final village quest in P3rd where you fight Jho then Tigrex and Nargacuga in the arena. It's the only quest where I've seen it happen.
Pretty sure as a kid when I was playing 4 ultimate I remember seeing a deviljho eat his own tail. It’s still pretty faint in my memory but I remember seeing him or another deviljho (not sure which it’s been a long time) eat another (or it’s own) tail while I was hunting it on heavens mount.

@@BackroomBandit It's most likely other players were placing meat inside tail. I remember always placing meat Everytime Devil Jho went to a new zone back in MH3U. Many players did this. There was probably a portion of the MH community who would put it inside the tail and so people saw it happen and now nobody can replicate it because the players who were doing it aren't playing MH3U anymore.

I feel like Deviljo eating his tail was just something Capcom said as a lore description for it. I, too, remember this vividly from as far back as monster hunter 3 tri. I stopped to watch it because it was the strangest thing I'd seen up to that point. No monsters nearby, no multi-player. Just a wild Jho.

Mine was in tri also. Quropeco called him in and I fought both for awhile and I got his tail off, and after getting exhausted he eats it. I haven't seen anyone get a jho exhausted for this experiment.

It was already limping and he just picked it up and started slamming it against the walls and I was powerless to do anything until it was dead

Like in a multi hunt quests a monsters corpse will despawn after a set amount of time and at the same moment the tail despawns, too. So if the deviljho was still alive there is just no way that it could have despawned, except if it belonged to another already dead deviljho in a multi quest...

The part you brought up at the end with the client side small monsters is actually really interesting. When me and a friend of mine were trying to get it to happen in GU, there was a moment where we were clearing out velociprey so they wouldn't interfere, and he was attacking one that was nowhere near him on my screen. I think this perfectly explains why so many people swear they've seen it, they technically have, it was just an illusion created by multiplayer desyncing instead of natural, intended behaivor.
No I've definitely seen it happen in single player haha, Though he has to be exhausted with no meat sources around. HOWEVER it has been removed in newer games so he probs wont do it anymore.

Considering how big his tail is and how many times you run into him/ have to farm him. It's likely this would happen to a few people and get the rumor started. Again especially because i've never seen it happen in any other game he appears in. And in other games you fight him significantly less in significantly more diverse areas which considerably drop the chance of this humorous accident happening.

You know, mentioning small monster desync actually gives me an idea. What happens if the host kills a small monster and has it land on top of the tail on his screen? For other players, the small monster will be elsewhere, so where does Deviljho go to eat in that instance?
Plus, when Deviljho eats something, you become unable to carve it, right? What happens when Jho is visually far away from the thing that it's eating? Does it cancel the carves of the small monster miles away, or does it cancel the carves of the thing closest to Jho?
This is no longer about eating the tail, but there are mysteries still to be solved...
Monsters don't eat small monsters you kill, they spawn their own special versions that they kill to eat. But yeah those can align with tail.
Something to realize, people: Deviljho's tail does not have the same properties as prey animals that Jho can kill and eat, or the meat hunters drop. It's part of the monster instead, as a severable piece. That means Jho couldn't target and eat it even if it were possible.
This is a mind screw I swear I remember fighting a Jho in 4 Ultimate and I cut its tail off and before I could carve it the Jho began to eat it preventing me from getting anything from it and I was so upset about it because I needed a Jho tail to craft something.

Back when i was around 9-10ish years old (yes i was that young when i first played MH on PS2) i vividly remember, to this day, that my weapon got stolen by a melynx. And when i tried to attack the hunter just does this "shrugging off" animation. I even remember the specific area where it occurred. And since i've never seen it mentioned anywhere before i just shrug it off as my overactive imagination
i had it happen on psp during the desert area on freedom unite and i literally thought it was my imagination awhile ago because it seems like no one else metioned it. somewhat think it was damaged copys of the game stealing item - weapon number rather than stealing item - bag
codes couldve got damaged due to the discs my freedom unite was a 2nd hand and was indeed scratched to hell.
@@frasercake another Capcom game were weapons disappear is the old god of war 1-2 if your game disc was too scratched to load the next zone properly (our just too scratched) upgrading your weapons will make then disappear and not do damage except for moves that spawn a secondary hit box like plumes of Prometheus or the tackle combo.

I have one instance where, while I don't have it recorded, I do have all 3 of my hunting party at the time as witnesses. In 3 Ultimate, we were fighting Jho in the Tundra. No meat was down and there were no other monsters in the area, and Jho started noshing on his tail. You'd think that he's just biting a hunter, but no, all 4 of us were freely moving at the time. It was the ONLY time I ever saw it happen. One of us was running a stamina depletion build with the hammer, Jho had gotten to the extreme hunger state (which if you know MH mechanics, you know there are normally 3 degrees of hunger for the monsters, 1 mild hunger, where the Monster will find a reliable food source in the area, but still has energy to fight, 2 moderate hunger, where the Monster will travel to a nearby zone in search of a stamina source 3 high hunger is usually after a Monster goes into and out of rage, normally retreating by a few zones in search of a much larger stamina source. Jho is the ONLY Monster that has a 4th level of hunger, extreme hunger, very difficult to get him into it, he has to rage multiple times and be prevented from retreating. If his tail is severed at this point, Jho has the ability to cannibalize his own tail to regain his stamina.

I swear I have seen deviljho eating his tail back in the Tri days. It could be that the monster's tail dropped on top of already existing meat. It was over a decade ago now so I'm not certain, but just my two cents. I was with 3 other randos so it could be one of them put meat down under the tail just to play a prank. I remember being very surprised to see him eating his tail, and I also can't recall it ever happening again.
I have seen people put meat down to make it look like he was eating his own tail several times before hearing about this. I always took it as an in joke, only hearing about this as a big thing in the past few days. That may have fed into people thinking they have seen it happen not knowing what people were doing.
As someone who started with World and stayed/stays out of the communities. When I fought jho in the introductory quest I remember severing his tail and him running around eating things. As a long time fan, I gotta agree. Monster tails don't tend to dissappear unless the monster is dead and has despawned.

My first time playing monster hunter world back in 2018 i was doing a quest in the wildspire waste, i dont remember what the quest was which could be an important part but i put it on gods life that i saw devilhjo pick his tail up in his jaws shortly after i severed it. It was in the center of the map where there is an landbridge and kestodons, however i never kill and and they were on the opposite side of the bride still cowering. What i do know for sure is that it was not a devilhjo quest and all i was trying to do was get a devilhjo material to try and see if it unlocked his armor for me to see. Believe it or don't the choice is yours, but i saw it happen, just not him gnawing at it like he does to pinned hunters or placed meat.
Believe it or not, I never thought jho would eat his own tail. I didn’t even know there was a rumor around it and I’ve been playing since 3U.
its only a couple of days old. and yes, in older games, he did. I'm not sure if he still does it in world or rise or generations ultimate tho.

I witnessed a Deviljho eat its own tail on a quest once. I forgot the name of the quest, but it's a special quest in MH3P where you slay it with no equipment. And I'm a hunter who does not bring any raw or tinged meat on hunts because my inventory space is filled with combo books.
Try making it idle once you cut off its tail and hide near it without carving it.

I distinctly remember a jho eating it's tail in 3U. The tail sprite didn't go away, I just lost the ability to carve it.
I started playing in Gen, andy first exposure to it was some endgame players dragging my noob butt around on endgame quests. We were fighting a savage Jho, and when someone cut the tail off, they were like, "hurry, go and carve before he eats it!" So I did. And then I always made sure to grab the carve quickly. And I told the generation after me to do the same. It's so crazy that it was always false
Same thing happened to me back in 3U. One of my friends told me to hurry and carve the tail before he ate it. I had hunted Jho offline before that and never saw him eat his own tail, but I figured it must be an online thing; and so I've had that in the back of my mind until the present day, without ever actually seeing him eat his tail.

Funny you mention this because I believe this is exactly what happened with the Poogie question. I recall reading an interview in which one of the game's leads stated in no uncertain terms that petting Poogie does nothing.

As a player from MHtri from way back in the day (at least on the wii) it was very common to place para meat or other types to prevent other players from carving the tail while the fight was happening. This could be where the misconceptions arise
Rookie! The deviljo will eat its own tail but only under certain circumstances:
- it will if it is hungry and in the same area as its tail.
- if it leaves the area where its tail was and comes back it won’t eat it.
- if you carve from the tail it won’t eat it.
- if it loses hunger and gains it again it won’t eat its tail the second time around, if it misses its first chance it won’t eat it or try.
- if you stun, trap, mount, punch the bastard into seeing stars or make it flinch it will not eat its tail but you will piss him off.
- if it is enraged and then becomes hungry it won’t eat its tail.
I had experience climbing the ranks in mh4u until G rank Gold, it was in this period fighting with teammates when I first saw the deviljo eat its tail for the first time. Me and my friend were dumbfounded and scared when it cured its hunger by eating its tail, I kept an eye out for this same occurrence and it seems it’s AI is very strict with when it comes to eating its own tail (but for reals it’s AI is very strict with the requirements).
Can I just say how is anybody gonna get footage of a 3Ds moment or DS moment of this rare occurrence, nobody has the patience to even try
You know i absolutely have vivid memory of similar things happening in 3u. I remember cutting off his tail and him lunging at us, then immediately turning 90 degrees back to his tail to eat it. It didn't disappear though as I'd expected.
That said, with common knowledge of his appetite there was absolutely meat on the ground in a few spots and it could have landed on one. Beyond that I'm sure there were small monsters to eat as well.

I remember Deviljho running from me in Moga Forest in 3U. He was exhausted and he went to area where we fought before (area 5) and there was his tail laying almost at the very center of that area. He went straight for it and that's how I remember it lol.

there would have to be some kind of flag on the game object that would make it consumable. so if some one could use a resource editor to read the flags on the things DJ can eat, vs the things he wont eat, then look at the tail object (my guess is there's a separate object when it's on the ground) to see if it has that "eatable" flag.

For some reason I have a vivid memory of seeing a video of Deviljho using a unique animation of picking up his own tail in his jaws, and then start gulping it down like a stork or a snake, removing it from the environment cuz he just swallowed it whole. I have never been able to find this video, and I'm half convinced I dreamed it.
it was a Deviljho vs Savage Deviljho special quest, and halfway thru killin th first one, his tail comes off and then Savage Jho climbs from underground and eats the tail.
I feel like this is something I've seen happen, and yet now I'm second-guessing myself. I always jumped right to carving the tail in fear it'd be eaten, but I guess I don't need to do that? Probably what makes this myth so widely believed is that it feels like it would be true. If Deviljho can eat dead or sleeping large monsters, then if anything being able to eat its own tail feels more believable than those things it can actually do.
This reminds me of the time I found out that Yian Garuga was not a hybrid monster and I felt like such an idiot for believing that it was for so long

I think the reason why Deviljho doesn’t eat its own tail is because the tail is part of its model and would maybe require special tags for it to be eaten. Maybe Capcom’s team couldn’t figure it out

My brother and I started with Tri, and never seen him eat his tail.
We heard stories from other players in Loc Lac about this phenomenon, but never cared about it one way or another.
I think the dev just misspoke in their excitement, and the only way this story can end now is one of the “researchers” in World’s sequel saying the same thing, but Deviljo still can’t eat its own tail.
As someone who played a ton of monster hunter with friends. Here is what happened. You'd cut off deviljhos tail and newbie friend would go to carve it mid fight and end up getting attacked by a random small monster like a Jaggi. Kill said Jaggi then carve and return to the fight. However small monsters were NOT synced so deviljhos would go over and eat the small monster and look like he was eating his tail. The end. Only works if the host is the noob.
The double jho quest in the arena actually has not them eating their own tails but eating each other’s tails. It’s a rare occurrence but it happens. That’s as close as we can get legitimately.
There's no evidence that the jho will eat each other's tails until it is proven that it happens. We can sit here and say "Oh I swear that's happened before" or "there's a low chance of it happening, I swear", but science doesn't care about any of that. It wants proof

@@TheMarlz2 sadly no don’t have mh3u anymore but it occurs when in the quest. It’s pretty much the jhos eat things not if their body parts but of other monsters. Like seeing the small jho eat the big one’s lopped off tail or vice versa.
I've witnessed it on expeditions in MH4U as well as in the arena.
While I personally never believed it, maybe it's like the Seltas Queen where he only eats it while at low hp and fatigued. Just an idea to keep those who still believe going.

I've without a doubt in my mind, seen a Deviljho eat his own tail. It was in tri on the volcanic map more specifically in area 4. Unless someone rips apart the behavior data and can show me that there is no such behavior, or unless several devs come out and say that they never programmed it to, I am going to continue to believe that Deviljho can in fact eat its own tail.

Wilds gonna bring in Deviljho as a DLC and the cutscene gonna be him charging in to disrupt another hunt when you cut the target monsters tail, then another cutscene triggers if you cut his tail off during the hunt and he eats it
Back in the the day when I put over a thousand hours into tri, I ran sword and board. When deviljho came I vividly remember him eating his tail when you severed it, and tried to carve it IMMEDIATELY after. He would push you out the way, then start monchin. I remember using my hello kitty keyboard to type to other hunters warning them NOT to carve after severing tail cuz he'd eat it. I know you said you did a BUNCH of testing, but did you consider that an option?

As a weird example I misremembered Eggman and Sonic’s first scene with each other in Mystic Ruins. Sonic Adventure. My false memory was me thinking Sonic and Eggman claiming this is the first time they met in that scene. Finally replaying the game years later from initial play through I realize its not the case. They say nothing of the sort.

I was in the middle of a glacial agnaktor quest, deviljho showed up and scared the hell out of me. I was starting to get used to long sword, and managed to cut off the tail. Cha-cha and Kyamba were getting his attention, so I went for a tail carve. As I was carving, he walked up and ate it! I got the text "nothing was carved" or something along those lines.
i too remember seeing this phenomenon, my friend also remembers seeing this too. perhaps some programmers might be able to take a look at the A.I. of jhos in different games and see if there's anything there that would say [these circumstances -> eat tail] type stuff. i specifically remember seeing this in game when i was young, older, and in world as well.
Edit: perhaps easier than trying to look at jho's ai, do tails allow monsters to eat from them? like there is code on meat so that the ai knows it can go and eat. does jho's tail have that?

The tail has to be a first carve Gem for him to eat it? You have to be wearing a specific set of armor? The Jho has to be a specific super tiny size range?

ideas to test: 1. maybe he only eats the tail after it's been carved, as a way to prevent feelbad partbreak item loss
2. maybe he WILL eat OTHER monster's severed tails, and the announcer simply mistakenly assumed it also applied to its own.
I vividly remember in 4U doing the first (?) quest that has Jho as a target. It specifically was in the Prumal Forest. I remember cutting it's tail in the area between the waterfall area and the area with the jump in it. I cut it's tail and forgot to carve it because I was too invested. It ran to the jump area, got hungry there, and ran back to the midway between the two. I remember putting down tainted meat to get it to eat it, only for it to ignore the meat and go straight for it's tail. I distinctly remember the feeling I had watching that, being surprised as it, and being upset bc I couldn't carve it's tail.

I want to believe this so freaking much. But all evidence that has surfaced in these past weeks points towards us being the victims of a Mandela Effect. He should be able to eat his own tail. Not just because the Capcom guy from 9 years ago said so, but also because it makes all the sense. And yet... Nothing. No undoctored clips have surfaced after weeks of searching. Granted, the limited options to record stuff aren't helping, but really? With what probably amounts to thousands of hours across the whole community gone into this? It was a beautiful urban legend while it lasted. Or gruesome, given the subject matter. Either way, I hope MH6 includes this to reward us all for our patience.

I'm 100% certain I have seen Jho eat his own tail in the final village quest in P3rd where you fight Jho then Tigrex and Nargacuga in the arena. It's the only quest where I've seen it happen.
