    Remember the four crests of the Hunter's Guild, "respect for nature" is the highest and "crafting from nature" is the lowest.
    You activate the desire sensor's curse by swapping these positions.

      I just need 3 Barioth spikes, it's low rank item and it's 15% chance by breaking the wings... It wouldn't take long I said...

    The desire sensor is indeed a cruel mistress. I remember back in the 3U days I really needed a Zinogre Skyemerald and asked one of my friends to help me get it. We hunted 37 of the bastards and I didn't get a single one. But you know how many my friend got? A LOT.
    Edit for the end of 2022: Was not expecting this to get this much traction but I'm absolutely loving hearing about everyone's stories with the desire sensor. Please by all means keep sharing your stories no matter how old this comment gets. In recent desire sensor news, I have not gotten a single Rathalos Mantle since sunbreak released, I have however gotten 18 Rathian Mantles and over 20 of her Rubies.

    I remember when Kulve Taroth first released in world, my friend needed a glimstone from her. At the time melding them wasn't an option since Capcom made it to where every new title update you can't meld the rare drop until the next one releases.
    So we decided to try breaking the plating from the horns with the cannons instead of doing the full seige since it was just the 2 of us. We started around 10 pm one night, on pursuit level one. Sometimes we weren't consistent with the cannonballs so we had to do damage with our weapons instead. Whenever we got to pursuit level 3, we had a more consistent strategy down, 2 loaded cannons and a guaranteed plating break every time within 2 minutes of starting.
    We ended up getting maximum pursuit level, I ended up with FIFTEEN glimstones, 3 of which I carved in a single attempt, before she got one. She finally got one to drop at about 5 am, 7 HOURS after we began. At that point we said fuck it and finished the seige anyways since it was max level and would be easy. We break the horns and 3 of 4 of her carves yielded glimstones.
    Desire sensor is a bitch.

    This theory is just my headcanon and I have no way to actually prove it other than from my own experience. So I actually believe there is an ingame mechanic that lowers the drop rate of certain items you're looking for. So in flyann's example he needed the Ceadeus tail, he then goes to the smithy and looks at the weapon he wants to craft and the items needed, the game recognizes this, and when he goes to hunt Ceadeus the drop rate for tail will be lowered. So my solution to this is to trick the game into thinking I need another item, so lets say I need the Ceadeus tail, I would then go and look into another weapon like a Rathalos Great Sword that requires a ruby, after looking at the weapon a couple of times at the smithy I would then go and complete a couple of Rathalos quests to trick the game into thinking I need a ruby, but I actually needed a Ceadeus tail. So now I go and farm Ceadeus WITHOUT looking at his weapon. This may sound stupid but I genuinely believe it works, I have been doing this since 3U and I rarely encounter a monster that I need to farm a long time to get his rare item.

    • @samarrawal711
      @samarrawal711 2 ปีที่แล้ว +198

      you are right bro this actually works, i always hunt a monster 3 times without looking at its armor and it gives me almost everything to craft that armor

    • @SKS_Shadowkitty
      @SKS_Shadowkitty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +163

      No way of proving this, but it is essentially what I believe as well.
      I think, I *feel*, that somehow the game considers things like the weapons you are using, the equipment you are viewing, and the monsters you are hunting to make an educated calculation on what it is you want... And then withold it mercilessly.
      With of course the caveat being that if you are hunting in a party then inevitably, without fail, you will get the drops your partner wants and they will get the drops you want, with no way to trade.

    Here's my tale of the desire sensor. My DH and I were farming Gore Magala in 4U for armor sets. His was complete after about 5-7 hunts. I still needed a plate for the greaves. We went after that thing over and over again trying to get a plate to drop for me. We were going for shiny drops, tail-cuts, head breaks, anything that had a tiny chance of success. On about the 25th hunt, I was getting pretty steamed. This is not an easy beast to bring down even after two dozen fights. But we wailed on it and stuck to it, picking up shinies and breaking every part. The quest ended and no plate for me. My DH looked over with this nervous little grin. I knew he got a plate. It's silly but it got to me so bad I could hardly speak to him for the rest of the day. I took a break from Gore and 4U for a bit. After about a week I picked it up again and had the plate on the 27th hunt. I almost didn't even want to make the last armor piece at that point. My husband told me later (much much later) that he actually got THREE plates on that 25th hunt.

    The third? NOTHING. Nope, naddah, zilch. Even after easily 50+ Rath hunts between Red, Azure, and Silver Rathalos, I've never gotten that third mantle. I haven't touched 3U in a while, so maybe after this video, I could get better luck getting it, right? ....right...?

    Actually while emulating MHFU on PPSSPP I manged to find an interesting workaround. You need to use emulator savestates for it to work.
    When you just finished a hunt and you get a message "Going back to village in 1 min" use a savestate and wait for rewards screen.
    If your desired drop was not present, reload that savestate and move your character to different area. This often changes the rewards table completely.
    And it does save time in the long run, better to experiment for 5 minutes if you should end quest in areas from 1 to whatever, than go for 30 something hunts from scratch.
    Not sure if this method works on Dolphin emulator for I never played it.
    Hope this helps to work around desire sensor in older titles.

      @@augustorocha9906 I think I know what you stumbled upon. When using emulator save states, one has to be careful to not create a "time paradox" so to speak. Game will not be able to use classical save function when it is in "alternative reality". That is why I tried to only use that workaround when farming for specific rare drop at the very end of a hunt and used proper save method to actually save my progress.

    This reminds me of when i fell in love-hate with the series. I wanted to make nargacuga X armor in MH3U, i liked the ninja look and thought the skills would help me keep up with my friends who were dragging my plebness through G rank at the time. until then i just thought the game was a good time with friends but this was my first bona fide solo memory. best quest was hunt two green nargacuga, needed a single nargacuga mantle, 3% per carve, 1% per quest reward, 2% per shiny drop, 3% per head break. I think the game was saying "so you want to not drag down your friends by dying... well then, you are just gonna have to get good no DODGE." 50 quests later and not a single mantle in sight. however i had become a master nargacuga hunter, i had learned his every move by heart, i learned to weave my longsword attacks into his enraged attacks and just never stop attacking except for the occasional dodge roll which i had learned to weave into the correct attacks to keep the pressure up. despite my full tank build and unupgraded nargacuga sword (it also needed a mantle... but the armor came first) it took me 12 mins to take out both nargacugas so i was able to insert the hunts into random points throughout the day. hunt 51 was the first mantle, i also had every other material for the armor set before i hunted green nargacugas... so this wasn't even the entire amount of chances i had to get that mantle...huint 53 gave me two more mantles.... leaving me with an extra. shortly after that my friends and i began MH4U.

    The wildest thing is that in order to be guaranteed a 5% drop you need to do 59(58.4) attempts. So if you were the absolutely most unlucky person it would have taken 176 (58.4x3) possible chances for the item to drop to get 3.
    Really puts into perspective how unlucky you can possibly get with a 1 in 20 drop chance.

    It's absolutely unreal how cruel and unpredictable the desire sensor is. Back in the day, I remember playing 4U with my sister. Me and her were farming the absolute hell out of Azure Rathalos, I needed all those rubies for the Silver Rathalos armor set, weapons, etc. So we hunted this thing, broke all we could, cut that tail, and then captured him. Every. Single. Fight. I remember it very vividly, I got a ruby basically every single time, I don't ever think I missed a ruby. Every single quest, every single capture, I got a ruby guaranteed. Shit, sometimes I'd even get one from the tail AND capture rewards. I must've gotten over 10 of those things in our runs total.
    My sister? At the end of it all? She must've gotten 1 or 2, MAXIMUM. God bless you, Monster Hunter. You fuckin' menace of a game.

    The craziest part is that the desire sensor even crosses over into MHN the MOBILE GAME not just for the few drops you even get and can possibly find, but also for what spawns. For the longest time I needed specific Jyuratodys parts to get the water dual blades upgraded to my current level, and the desire sensor not only never gave me what I wanted but also never let those specific things drop for MONTHS until they added the monster tracker and I just used that to force Jyu encounters. Then as soon as I got what I wanted, my encounters imeadietly spiked, I was seeing 3-5 a day on my usual walking routes when I wouldn’t see any for about week before hand. The same thing happened woth Tobi’s since they were the only ligtning source for a bit but instead of spawning less it just never dropped the claws and still rarely does. The rarest grade one drop in the game.

    Watching your friend get the stuff you need and vice versa is the way. Back when I replayed 4 with a friend I don't know how many times we had to farm Sinister Astronomy because of her bad luck. On the other hand when I needed something in Iceborne... Oh, you wanna make a Brachydios set and some weapons? Well, I don't care about it so don't mind me dropping two immortal reactors in a single hunt and another one right after a couple more!

  • @jachauntaeons2067
    @jachauntaeons2067 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm convinced that the desire sensor is a real mechanic in the games and that is actually procs in the game whenever you look at your blacksmith's forge/upgrade options and sees which materials you are currently missing. I've done a few experiments with a friend of mine that indicated to me that the desire sensor lasts on average about 5 hunts on drops like horns and tails. It could have all been luck, but this was what I observed.
    My biggest theory to combat this mechanic is that you need to always match whatever number of materials you need in the first place to display that you don't "need" any more of said material and sell off whatever common part you might also need to make it to edge the odds in your favor for more rare parts, which matters to a hunter like me because I'm a collector and like to try to make every single weapon from monsters I love, even if I don't plan on using said weapons any time soon.
    The lesson I've learnt is to consider the first rare drop, be it a gem or a mantle (or heavenly scales for my older fellow hunters) to be the sacrificial threshold. It exists solo to "trick" the desire sensor into thinking you don't need anymore.
    But yeah ... not sure if I'm right, but I find the results to be a bit more successful with this method.

    Something a good friend of mine and I used to do when we played MH all the time was make sure we spent as little time as possible looking at the required materials list of a piece of equipment before quickly switching to look at something else we wanted in the future, all in an effort to trick the desire sensor into thinking it was *that* item we wanted, and not the real one

    In in gatcha games (or at least the ones I’ve played) we also see this phenomenon a lot, but we call it The Law of Inverse Desire and define it as basically “the probability of receiving something on a pull is exactly the opposite of how much you want that thing” so you’re more likely to get the ones you hate and extremely unlikely to get the ones you love.

    Watching this now really brings me back to when I first played this game as a kid farming for this exact weapon upgrade as well, but 4U came out shortly after so i never actually got that far into it.
    Even then I'm convinced to this day that these games have a desire sensor. in 4U, for example, I hunted Shagaru Magala 80+ times for a phosgem (and never got one, I gave up and reached G3 before I stopped playing). In world, Anjanath refuses to give me fangs, fang +s, and hardfangs, and Rathian would refuse to give me her spikes. This is why I never put stuff I need on wishlists in-game anymore, because I'm that convinced the game knows you want it and refuses to give it to you. Even when I specifically break the parts I need, carve for items that are carve-only, collected shinies, and used vouchers/skills/whatever to increase my luck, at times I'll barely even be spared 1. Some of the simplest items you need can cost so so much time to get. But we still love MH for it.
    Anyways ik this video is like a year old but it's still very very entertaining and sent me through a huge nostalgia trip for this game. Maybe after I'm finished with frontier (or fed up with it for whatever reason) I'll try and play Tri again.

    I had a desire sensor story. Years ago, while playing mhp3rd, one hall opened where somebody needed an Ukanlos Jewel. Was playing gunlance at the time so I went in with three others to help this guy out. Took us around 2 hours to get him his Ukanlos Jewel, while the rest of us had 2-4. I got 3 myself from that killing spree so it was hilarious when the guy who needed it the most actually got his drop. What a time!
    Drop rates btw are 2% for 4x body carve, 4% from chin break and 6% from stomach break.

    The desire sensor is also cruel when playing with friends.
    I used to try and help a friend get a specific drop for his weapons in 4U... Something with a 5% rate like the Wyvern Gem here...
    I got 4 Rath Rubies in 6 hunts, and he only needed 1, which would not drop for him.
    So it senses who needs it... And gives it to who doesn't.

    The desire sensor ends up getting bypassed in a way in the 5th gen games (at least in their endgame) for the rarest items, like Plates, Gems and Mantles. In World, you can exchange "Wyverian Prints" of differing grades at a Melder's place to obtain such items...and in Iceborne, you can get at least one Celestial Wyvern Print, the highest grade one, per day by "winning" the Steamworks minigame. You then turned in these Prints to the Melder. It does require farming Dragonvein Coal, but there's an event quest that trivializes that. You could also do Investigations with Gold or Silver rewards, which increased the chances of getting it from an aggravating 1-2% to around 11-13%.
    In Sunbreak, you could work your way up the ranks of the Anomaly Quest endgame grind and eventually just buy the items outright using special Investigation Coins, and eventually get any Plate, Gem, Mantle or other super-rare item for varying numbers of coins.
