"Good Vibrations" is a classic, if you haven't already hit that one.
For a song *about* the Beach Boys: "Brian Wilson," Barenaked Ladies. It's about his very nasty bout with depression, but Wilson eventually bounced back enough to perform covers of "Brian Wilson." (I've only ever been able to find a partial video of one of those, but it shows he has a good sense of humor.)

I love to just let this whole album wash over me. Brian Wilson composed almost all of it, and he produced the album, too. It was incredibly influential. It’s from 1966. My favorite Beach Boys album is “All Summer Long” from a couple years before, probably because it’s the only one I had as a kid, and I listened to it at least a thousand times before I was 10! The Beach Boys were 3 brothers, a cousin, and one of their friends. Brian, Dennis (died of drowning after drinking all day), and Carl Wilson (died of lung cancer), Mike Love, and Al Jardine. Brian Wilson was only 23 when he produced this album and he is deaf in one ear after allegedly being beaten by their father. The Pet Sounds album is considered to be one of the best albums of all time. There is a movie called Love and Mercy starring Paul Dano as a young Brian Wilson and John Cusack as an older Brian. It also stars Paul Giamatti as a doctor hired to help Brian with his personal issues. Brian Wilson claims it is really accurate to the way he remembers things unlike most biopics that take liberties and it is one of the few movies I immediately had to watch again once it was over.

1966, from the masterpiece Pet Sounds album, which Rolling Stone Magazine named the second greatest album of all time after the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. Those background sounds are musicians and not the guys singing. Brian Wilson was a master at using overlapping layers of background music and treating the group members' voices as another key component. Many of their records featured the boys singing with professional studio musicians performing the backing tracks. The Beach Boys formed in 1961 and originally consisted of brothers Brian Wilson (vocals/multi-instrumentalist/producer/arranger/composer), Dennis Wilson (drums/vocals), and Carl Wilson (lead guitar/vocals and the lead singer on this song), their first cousin Mike Love (vocals/lyricist on a lot of the songs, although not this one) and Brian's high school friend Al Jardine (guitar/vocals). Al left shortly before the group made it big and was replaced by the Wilsons' across-the-street neighbor David Marks in 1962. Jardine returned about a year later and Marks left shortly after that to form his own group. Glen Campbell joined briefly as a sixth member in 1965, then was replaced a few months later by Bruce Johnston, a veteran singer/songwriter/producer of the "surf music" scene. The lineup of the Wilson Brothers, Love, Jardine & Johnston is considered the "classic" lineup. There were a couple of additional members in the 70s, but the group remained largely intact until Dennis Wilson died (drowned) in 1983. Brian Wilson suffered from numerous mental issues beginning in the late 60s and was in and out of the group throughout the 70s and 80s, then went on to primarily a solo career from the late 80s on. Carl Wilson died of cancer in 1998 and the group splintered into several factions at that point. Mike and Bruce continued touring with several other musicians as "The Beach Boys", but it basically was more of a tribute band. In 2012, Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce and David reunited for a very successful 50th Anniversary Tour and the group's first new album in many years. After the tour, however, they went their separate ways again. In-fighting between group members over the years has, sadly, been very prevalent...often between Brian and Mike. And for those who are wondering, I am something of an expert on the Beach Boys and their music. I've been trying to write a book about them for nearly 20 years now, but it's been a difficult process.

Absolutely one of the top pop songs ever written. Symphonic instrumentals and the melodic changes are inspired, From minor to major... gorgeous and then there is the LYRIC. Brian Wilson is a genius.

According to the personnel list on this song there was someone playing "plastic orange juice cups". That may be the little sounds you mentioned.

    • @1401minstrel
      @1401minstrel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

That's true, but I think the were actually plastic orange juice bottles, not cups. It was one of Brian Wilson's "pet" sounds he had in his head when recording this album. He would often use very unorthodox "instruments" to achieve the sound he wanted. Another somewhat interesting fact is that the guy who played the plastic orange juice bottles on the recording of "God Only Knows" is a paranoid schizophrenic who is currently in prison for killing his mother. No lie.

God Only Knows was released in 1966 as a single in support of its parent album Pet Sounds.
Singing lead vocals is Carl Wilson. The brother of still living former Beach Boy Brian Wilson.
The instrumentation was provided by a large group of studio musicians called a The Wrecking Crew who provided instrumentation for lots of artists in the 1960’s.
The song proved to be a big hit. It reached #4 on the charts in Belgium, #6 on the Canada RPM Top Singles Chart, #6 on the Irish Singles Chart In Ireland, #4 on the Dutch Charts in the Netherlands, #6 on the Norwegian Charts in Norway and #2 on the UK Singles Chart.
For the US Charts, it reached #39 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #38 on the US Cash Box Top 100.

Genius of Brian Wilson -it has been called a pocket symphony - the back up musicians (while the beach boys were on tour) were ‘the Wrecking Crew’ studio musicians - they were PROS who backed up for all the best of the time. By this time Brian was not touring, he was songwriting to keep them going - his dad, record label were relentless & he finally had a breakdown .. he came back after years & is still going. Have seen him numerous times on tour.

Brian Wilson almost single-handedly created this particular 60s sound. The man is a mozart level genius, but his struggles got the better of his later years. Hope he has something great left in him to gift the fans of real music.

That killer bass is played by ace session musician Carol Kaye. She played on numerous hits from the 60's and was a member of "The Wrecking Crew", a celebrated group of session musicians (including, among other stellar notables, Glen Campbell and Leon Russel) called upon by producers over and over again to bring singular life to some of the best songs of the era. She delivered every single time.

This album was basically the magnum opus of Brian Wilson. Not to lessen the contribution or talent of the other members, they're obviously fantastic performers and were vital to the project, but as far as the composing/songwriting goes, this was Brian's baby.
It sounds like the 60's, not just because it was released in 66, but because it largely created that sound everyone now knows as "the 60's". Yet it also has sounds and themes in it that transcend time or place. In particular, this song. It isn't just a love song. It takes the small ideas of love humans tend to have, and elevates it to this eternal place. Yes, humans are not perfect, and even when they love someone, they screw up, or it wanes because of the imperfection of humanity, and the world still turns, life still goes on, but without love, what's the point? It's a real expression of how it feels to really love. He could have just said the world would stop if she left him. But that's not true and it's an immature, but very common expression. It's what a million love songs sound like.
Anyway, at first, almost everyone in the band and their management thought Brian had destroyed The Beach Boys with this album; That he had wasted time and so much money. How it happened was that Brian was too stressed and sick to go on tour. So he told them to go without him, and that he would work on the next album during that time.
When they came back and heard what he had been working on, it was so different, it bordered on bizarre in their opinion. It's called Pet Sounds because Brian literally brought animals into the studio and used their sounds throughout many of the songs. They thought he had finally totally broken mentally. Mike Love almost quit right there the first time he heard any of it.
Many of the band members thought it was basically the end of their careers...until it came out and blew everyone's mind. It didn't just change The Beach Boys. It literally changed how the world saw music.
Paul McCartney said that if Pet Sounds hadn't been created, The Beatles wouldn't have created Sgt Pepper. Which is interesting because Brian has said that The Beatles album Rubber Soul was a huge reason he created Pet Sounds in the first place. Paul said that everyone should listen to Pet Sounds as a part of their "education in life".

My dad was a jazz musician (trumpet) & I was exposed to a lot of really great music & musicians throughout my life. In the late 50s, early 60s, by the time I started kindergarten, one of my favorite albums that my dad had was Four Freshmen & Five Trombones. Great music, beautiful harmonies. Most of my friends never understood my wide ranging musical interests, & I could only feel bad for what they were missing. Then, one day, I read something that brought me a welcome feeling of vindication - Four Freshmen & Five Trombones is one of Brian Wilson's favorite albums, his inspiration for the wonderful harmonies he wrote for the Beach Boys, one of my favorite 60s groups! Four Freshmen & Five Trombones - one kind of 50's jazz you just might enjoy. 👍 I've been enjoying your reactions. So much GREAT music out there!!! BTW - Want haunting, chilling lyrics sung by a jazz legend? Billie Holliday singing Strange Fruit (written & originally recorded by her in 1939) is quite an experience.

My friend you MUST hear Glen Campbell, he was a beach boy for a year filling in for Brian Wilson and Brian produced a song for Glen when he was going on to his solo career titled "Guess I'm Dumb" Glen went on to be one of the top entertainers of the 60s and 70s and he is my personal 2nd favorite next to John Denver.

This is the most beautiful song Ever written!! I think everyone including Paul McCartney, agree. All of the beautiful tenor voices (as in this were sung by little brother, Carl) he had the most angelic voice ever. Unfortunately, he passed in 1988. I loved him sooooo much!. They sang together since very young, as 3 were brother, and 1 was a cousin.❤❤❤❤❤❤

The studio session drummer on this track not only played the drum kit but also was using his hands banging on an empty tape reel box that the recording tapes came in. One of the best pop songs ever written. Good choice ,Bro! The session guy's were known as The Wrecking Crew. Hal Blaine ,the drummer here played on 1000's of recordings.

The Beach Boys first release was 1961. I was a teenager when Pet Sounds was released way back in 1966. Man you bring back some great memories. In the 1995 or 96 they released a album with New artist singing lead vocals and of course they doing the background Lorrie Morgan does Don't worry Baby with them.

    1) Pet Sounds is a BRILLIANT album and Brian Wilson was a genius. He was the musical motor of the Beach Boys. 2) I loved this song since I was a kid, but as an adult it makes me think of Christmas...because it figures prominently in my favorite Christmas film. At the end of 'Love, Actually', this song completely sums up everything that has happened in the film. That love is the most important thing in the world...family, friends, romance, sex, or just a universal love for humanity...love actually is all around. As the song plays out, and people are gathering after being parted at London's Heathrow Airport, the characters in the film, then stock footage of people so happy to see each other, as the film ends. Every time I see it, I get a bit choked up. It's one of the best movie moments...so this Christmas, watch 'Love, Actually'. Here's the scene if you are interested...

The band is composed of brothers and cousins, so they really knew each other. The harmonies are unique, and are considered ingenious by those who understand music mechanics. Many performers have covered this song if only in concert as it is so appreciated by so many. The BB have many good songs. You will enjoy exploring their unique sound, and even though clearly 60's beach music, they stand alone from that period! There was other beach music from back then, but few people remember anyone but the BB!
