Brian is an inspirational human being, a damaged soul with a magnificent mind and talent. He not only wrote the songs but all the music and the harmonies. This one gives me goosebumps as do many. Paul McCartney said it was the most beautiful song he'd ever heard.
The lead vocals on this song are by Carl Wilson, who was then just 19 years old. He was also newly married, so it was easy for him to sing such a deep love song.
Brian Wilson wrote this beautiful song, but his brother Carl Wilson is singing lead vocals. Check out "Wouldn't It Be Nice" for more of this sublime goodness.
Someone asked why Brian Wilson didn’t sing lead on it. (Younger brother Carl did.) His response was that Carl had an element of sweetness in his soul and his voice that was necessary to the song. I can’t imagine anyone else singing it.
One of the many things I love about Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson is the fact none of them seemed to have any ego when it came to who sang lead on songs that each of them had written. On Brian's songs, if Brian felt that Carl had the voice he wanted to hear, Carl would sing it. If Brian wanted to hear Mike's or Al's voice on a lead, then Mike or Al would sing lead. Dennis had Carl sing lead on some of his songs, and even though he didn't write very much, Carl had Dennis sing lead on one of Carl's songs.
If you ever hear (or I'm sure if you have heard it, you probably agree) the versions that Brian did, you can see why he felt Carl was the better choice. And that's not to say Brians versions were bad, just you can tell Carl was the right voice.
Brian Wilson is a modern day Mozart.... Genius.. McCartney & Wilson both are untouched in gorgeous inter changing lyrics ,notes and chord's.... Amazing ... Good vibrations is a perfect song. Pocket Symphony,,as McCartney called it.... Beautiful man and Mind... Love Brian Wilson.xx

By this point in Beach Boys history, Brian Wilson was staying in LA, composing, and recording with the famous Wrecking Crew studio musicians, while the Beach Boys continued to tour without Brian. Once the instrumental tracks were recorded, the other Beach Boys would come to LA to record their vocal parts. Brian was definitely the genius behind these productions.
It's not just that he recorded these songs with Wrecking Crew. That crew had musicians from Chicago, New Orleans, LA, Memphis. They'd played multiple genres. Some of them had been in the biz since before Brian Wilson was born, seen a lot of musicians come and go, and THEY were awed by him as a genius.
Bono has also said that this is his favorite song as well. And he said “you only have to listen to the string arrangement on "God Only Knows" for fact and proof of angels.”
This whole album is incredible, and it shows how far ahead of their time they were. That fact gets proven when realizing that the songs will be relevant for all time. The message in this song rarely has equal in art…cheers Jamel, I’m liking and sharing while I watch 👍👍

"Pet Sounds" the album that this song was on, is widely considered as a landmark in recording engineering history. Brian Wilson was a visionary in the realms of production and engineering.

Brian Wilson is a musical genius. No debate. Plus The Wrecking Crew making that music on the fly? Wow! I can hear Carol Kaye’s subtle palm muted bass line locking it all down. Perfection.
Brian Wilson became more experimental and “deeper” as the 60s moved on. This album, Pet Sounds, ended up inspiring The Beatles, especially McCartney, with their making of Sgt. Pepper.
Not to mention how contradictory to common belief it weren't the Stones who rivaled the Fab Four. (Are you a Stones or Beatles fan?) The Beach Boys and The Beatles have always been at the forefront of changing the musical landscape. When Sergeant Pepper dropped, Brian Jones basically indefinitly shelved his ambitious 'Smile' because he 'couldn't top Sergeant Pepper'.

Interesting movie to watch is The Wrecking Crew, the group of working musicians that made up the L.A. music scene in the 60s and 70s. The musicians were talking about working with Brian Wilson and recording The Beach Boys songs. They truly held Brian Wilson in the highest esteem as a writer.

Brian loves a rap. The guy is still as sensitive as he was back in the 60s and getting rediscovered gives him a kick. Saw him do the whole Pet Sounds album with a backing band and fresh harmonies and it was sublime.

@@chuckhutton5087 Everything Brian Wilson does is brilliant. Surf's Up came out five years after Pet Sounds and it isn't like any other Beach Boys album. It's very deep and makes you think, although it isn't so heavy as not to be entertaining. Impeccably engineered as you might expect. Just don't expect Surfin USA music.
When Pet Sounds came out, if just for a moment, The Beach Boys were just as good as The Beatles. The whole album is bittersweet, introspective, and on some songs it's _deeply_ personal.
“Pet Sounds” is an epic album. Check out “Sloop John B” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” which are two other tracks from Pet Sounds which are outstanding as well.
Sloop John B is the worst song on the whole LP. It is out of sync with all the rest and was only put in because the record company wanted something 'commercial' sounding. I always finish listening to side 1 before this track starts.
@@moptopbaku6022 I LOVE the Sloop John B. It may be out of synch with the rest of the songs on the album, yes, but the harmonies and the instrumentation on it are fabulous. It's a classic traditional folk song with some Brian Wilson magic touches.
I can’t listen to this song without breaking down crying every time, no matter how many times I go into it knowing that, it always somehow ends up happening
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" is mine too. My mom had it on a cassette tape that we'd listen to in the Camaro on our way to and from our grandparents on the weekends when we were kids. Well that one and Kokomo. Both on the same tape - Still Cruisin'.
You've been wanting to get into full album reactions - - trust me, Pet Sounds is a must for a full album with headphones listen! This masterpiece was released in 1966!
The harmonies and their voices on this track are like instruments. Faultless. My fave Beach Boys track. They have many which the great Wrecking Crew provided the music.

Not sure you meant to make this connection, but Glen Campbell replaced Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys while they were on tour and Brian was in the studio creating the Pet Sounds album.
Pet Sounds. One of the most important albums ever made with one of the dopiest cover designs. Great reaction as always! I recommend you check out their version of Sloop John B, also on that album. It's a personal favorite.
This song always gives me "the feels". Even moreso since it was used in the closing credits of Love Actually. I mean! All those real reunions at Heathrow! SO moving!
Jamel, you need to see the video of the making of this song in the studio. Then you will see the genius of Brian Wilson. Jamel, you are great, and God Bless You.
This IS the most beautiful song ever written Brian Wilson is a musical genius. He used many different instruments that normally wouldn't be used but he had a sound In his head that only he knew worked. Song writers like Brian are very very special.
So many layers in this song from the orchestration to the vocals at the end. The Beach Boys were more than just surfing and cars. To me this is the most beautiful song in pop music.
Brian Wilson was deaf in one ear, and yet he produced this great stereo album, and at the time most records and radio were all mono. Thank you, Jamel, for your own great taste and appreciation.
The album actually was released in mono and “duophonic” fake stereo. It just sounds so good that you wouldn’t think it’s mono. The version he is listening to here is the mono version (you can tell because it has the original vocals on the outro. The 90s stereo remix has an alternate vocal)
One of the greatest drops ever. The song begins with an upbeat and joyful piano intro and then wow. Its a downer and but completely enjoyable. Then the song that follows is just a brilliant song of love and despair. I have loved this song since Kevin Arnold got on the bus and watched Winnie Cooper depart on another bus after they had broken up at a field trip to a museum. Winnie was at a different school at that point. And this song played.
I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times is one of the most personal and heart felt songs Brian ever recorded and wrote.. it’s a song that I relate to on so many levels
I love the fade-out when they're singing in a round. Here's a quote from the film "Amadeus", Mozart speaking: In a play if more than one person speaks at the same time, it's just noise, no one can understand a word. But with opera, with music... with music you can have twenty individuals all talking at the same time, and it's not noise, it's a perfect harmony!
Great movie this song was in: *Drop Dead Gorgeous* It’s a must watch cult classic from 1999 with so many famous people who weren’t on the map entirely yet. It’s ridiculously funny.
Its insane that a 22 yr old Brian Wilson, made such a complex musical arrangement, a 26 yr old Tony Asher put Brians feelings to qords on paper. And a 19 yr old Carl Wilson sang one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded!!! And The Wrecking Crew hitting every note Brian heard in his head!!! Blows my mind!!!

@@johnbrowne3950 I think I'll take a refresher course and listen to every album tomorrow, back to back. My wife is gonna leave me. 🤣🤣🤘🙂🤘
The Late-Great, CArl Wilson, on lead vocal. RIP, CArl Wilson. ----------MJL, 76 y/o
When Pet Sounds came out, if just for a moment, The Beach Boys were just as good as The Beatles. The whole album is bittersweet, introspective, and on some songs it's _deeply_ personal.
They were clearly better than the Beatles at that moment. John, Paul, and George Martin were all effectively quoted admitting as much.
If we don't have pet sounds then the Beatles don't make Sgt Pepper's.
In my humble opinion, Pet Sounds is the best album of all time. Smile was genius too.
@@1401minstrel It's not a bad song but it is certainly the worst on the LP and should definitely not be on Pet Sounds.
More from Pet Sounds! "Caroline, No" or "I Know There's an Answer". Brian Wilson is a genius.
The group "America" does a cover of Caroline No. Timothy B. Schmitt from the Eagles covers it as well
I can’t listen to this song without breaking down crying every time, no matter how many times I go into it knowing that, it always somehow ends up happening
This is my husband’s favorite Beach Boys song. Mine is “Wouldn’t it be nice”.
Me too
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" is my fave.
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" is mine too. My mom had it on a cassette tape that we'd listen to in the Camaro on our way to and from our grandparents on the weekends when we were kids. Well that one and Kokomo. Both on the same tape - Still Cruisin'.
Wouldn't It Be Nice was definitely the best harmony arrangement.
Same with me and my husband!
This song has a huge back story. It is one of the best-constructed rock songs ever written.
You've been wanting to get into full album reactions - - trust me, Pet Sounds is a must for a full album with headphones listen! This masterpiece was released in 1966!
So touching, so beautiful, love it so much. The voice of Carl Wilson, omg. Like an angel
Jamal, you gotta do this whole album. It's a masterpiece.
The harmonies and their voices on this track are like instruments. Faultless. My fave Beach Boys track. They have many which the great Wrecking Crew provided the music.
This isn’t just a song- it’s a prayer. This song is not of this earth. It’s from Heaven.
Jean Potter you are 100% right. This song touches my heart, soul, and spirit.
You said it: a prayer.
@Trenton Tiller Take your bigotry somewhere else. Brian Wilson is a man of faith, deal with it!
@Trenton Tiller A wise man once said: Just be a good human. Be humble, be kind, spread joy, peace & love.
@Trenton Tiller It may be a sh*tty caliphate police state in England, but we have the right to free speech here in the U.S.A. We're free to talk about our faith as are you to snarl hate-filled garbage. So we'll be staying right here, bokay? You're free to join us if you ever get tired of being miserable. You are welcome, in fact.
Another Brian Wilson classic with those superb Beach Boy harmonies . Never get fed up listening to this song.
'Pet Sounds' arguably changed music more than any other album... ever.
I’d say it’s equal to Stg Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band or DSOTM, all amazing albums.
Speaking of lyrics in this vein, and since you recently did Glen Campbell's "Gentle on my mind", I'd recommend his Wichita Lineman.
The first existential country song.
Wichita Lineman is one of my all-time favorite songs! If you've never heard his rendition of It Won't Bring Her Back from his final album (Adios), you might enjoy that one. Jimmy Webb wrote it and Glen Campbell performs to perfection.
Not sure you meant to make this connection, but Glen Campbell replaced Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys while they were on tour and Brian was in the studio creating the Pet Sounds album.
@@DavidLEnnis Very good point!
I need you more than I want you………I want you for all time…
Pet Sounds. One of the most important albums ever made with one of the dopiest cover designs. Great reaction as always! I recommend you check out their version of Sloop John B, also on that album. It's a personal favorite.
Music for the ending credits for Love Actually. Watching everyone hugging at the airport gave me a lump in my throat.
Brian Wilson is a Genius! That is Paul McCartney’s favorite song!
The underrated Carl Wilson. Rest in peace.
Listen to In my room from the Beach Boys. It's up their with God only knows.
Beautiful song
Pure, effortless harmony. Gorgeous lyrics.
i absolutely adore in my room ,, really sad once you realize the meaning though
Wendy is a real nice one too....
I nominate “Don’t Worry Baby.”
A masterpiece of a love song that proves that the people we love in our lives are more important than they or us will ever realize.
Damn it J! I’m trying to go to sleep but you keep dropping gems. 😄 I certainly don’t mind though. One of my favorite Beach Boys songs. 💕
This song always gives me "the feels". Even moreso since it was used in the closing credits of Love Actually. I mean! All those real reunions at Heathrow! SO moving!
Pet Sounds. Brian's masterpiece.
There wasn't just one.
Most beautiful song ever written.😇
Jamel, you need to see the video of the making of this song in the studio. Then you will see the genius of Brian Wilson. Jamel, you are great, and God Bless You.
This IS the most beautiful song ever written
Brian Wilson is a musical genius. He used many different instruments that normally wouldn't be used but he had a sound In his head that only he knew worked. Song writers like Brian are very very special.
This is my absolute favorite Beach Boys song
One of the most beautiful songs ever written
This and A Day In The Life, arguably the two greatest songs ever written.
Brian Wilson's music was so complex, he was definitely a genius.
heroes and villains, surfs up, sail on sailor, the warmth of the sun, darlin, do it again, betsy, 409, in my room, little deuce coupe, so many more
So many layers in this song from the orchestration to the vocals at the end. The Beach Boys were more than just surfing and cars. To me this is the most beautiful song in pop music.
Sir Paul McCartney agrees with you!
(As do I.)
steve
In my room is my favorite Beach Boys song.
Good choice. I love their instrumental 'Let's go away for a while'
Mine is good vibrations :)
The whole Pet Sounds Album is deep. If you haven't seen the movie Love and Mercy you need to check it out.
One of the best biopics I’ve ever aeen
Great movie.
Still hoping to find it on YT somewhere.
That’s a great movie!
Brian Wilson is a genius
I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times is one of the most personal and heart felt songs Brian ever recorded and wrote.. it’s a song that I relate to on so many levels
Need to hear "In My Room" - great harmonies.
Simply, the greatest song written by an American and our only answer to the Beatles.
The entire album is genius. Brian Wilson the modern day Mozart.
I love the fade-out when they're singing in a round. Here's a quote from the film "Amadeus", Mozart speaking:
In a play if more than one person speaks at the same time, it's just noise, no one can understand a word. But with opera, with music... with music you can have twenty individuals all talking at the same time, and it's not noise, it's a perfect harmony!
A alltime fav. Not about a girl, it's about his brother.
Thanks America for giving the world beautiful music 🎶. Love to you all from England 🇬🇧. Bless you
The doors when the musics over live at the Hollywood bowl ‘68, please!!!!!
Yessss when the musics over would require another intro “strap in y’all” and I’d be here for every minute of it….good call Lizard King
@@otda3675 Agreed. Love the doors. My favorite band of all time.
Greatest song ever written. Carl Wilson greatest harmony in every song he ever sang
Great movie this song was in: *Drop Dead Gorgeous*
It’s a must watch cult classic from 1999 with so many famous people who weren’t on the map entirely yet. It’s ridiculously funny.
It also played at the end of Boogie Nights. Fantastic movie.
One of my favorite movies! Definitely a must for those who appreciate dark humor.
Best pop, love song ever written. Sublime lyrics and harmonies. Beautiful arrangement. As close to perfect as you can get.
Give a listen to
“Don’t Worry Baby” and
“I just wasn’t made for these times”
Right through my heart ❤️
Love your reactions, especially with some of my favorite songs. God bless you
Favorites from Pet Sounds: "That's Not Me", "I Know There's an Answer", but yeah the whole album is golden
That’s Not Me for me too!
