One of the very best love songs ever written starts with: "I may not always love you..." such an original take. What an opening. It's a song that moves from strength to strength.
It's a beautiful song and Pet Sounds a masterpiece, However the lyric is actually quite dark and brooding the song is about obsession in love. It captures a youth's view of love being overtly possessive. It describe how deep his love for her is and that he doesn't know what he would do should she ever decide to leave him. He then goes on to describe how if she left him his life would not be worth living.
Paul McCartney (in 2007): “'God Only Knows' is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it...It's really just a love song, but it's brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian.”

The Beatles and The Beach Boys inspired each to a great extent. Brian Wilson produced the record between March and April 1966, enlisting about 20 session musicians who variously played drums, sleigh bells, plastic orange juice cups, clarinets, flutes, strings, French horn, accordion, guitars, upright bass, harpsichord, and a tack piano with its strings taped. This song is considered one of the best from the period.
What new generations don't know is that their father of Brian Wilson was a manipulator and control freak and the group had to fire him because he was causing a lot of problems for the group to write and play their music as the way they want to bring to the audience. Beach boys “In my room” Random fact. The Beatles did back in the USSR to try to make a beach boy sounding track. Pet sounds was hugely influential with the Beatles.
One of the most touching, beautiful songs ever written, imo. Brian Wilson's flair for melody, harmony, arrangement and studio innovation was both nearly unmatched and deeply influential, helped transform music through his inspiration on the Beatles and so many others. 'Feel Flows' - kinda psychedelic, even "Beatle-esque." Check it out.
Carl Wilson is the lead singer on this one - the voice of an angel. He is pictured on the far left in this video. "Sloop John B", "Sail On, Sailor," "Til I Die" "Heroes and Villains," "In My Room" are all amazing Beach Boys songs that stray away from the more surfing vibes.
They are not only legends... but they are STILL GOING!! The are seriously STILL touring!! Amazing group!!!!! I was born in 1981... but I am telling you.. they were the sound of my childhood (Parents ya know) lol.. I just love them!!
I graduated high school the year you were born....I TOO was raised on them (older sisters)....just shows the longevity of their music! And I have to agree with the others.......sometimes Mike Love might have Brian Johnston or even Al Jardine with him.....but it's passed time to retire the name....and let it rest with some dignity!
Wife here..Amazing instrumentation as always with the Beach Boys!!.."Marching Band Sound"..Yessss!!..Beautiful Harmonies!!..Awesome Reaction as always!!
The Beach Boys bring back my teen years and it was a great time for music. Those harmonies were amazing and Brian Wilson is a genius! Such great old stuff! 🌺✌️
Brian Wilson was only 23 when he wrote and arranged this. He recorded it with the Wrecking Crew on instruments and the Beach Boys recorded the vocals afterwards.
Brian Wilson is the writer and producer of the song. Brother Carl is singing and Brian's Wife and Sister in law are the backup singers in the final refrain. ammmmazing song from my teen years!
One of the greatest love songs and most imaginative songs of all times. The dichotomy of the lyrics is that we may not always be together, but if we aren't then there is no reason to go on because we are perfect together. I love hearing the sleigh bells in the background too.
This song came out in 1966 when I was a teenager. I'm so glad I had this music from that time period, plus the 70's and 80's. I would be bored to death if I had to listen to most of what's coming out now.
Amber picked up on the experimental sounds on this song (and the whole LP). Brian Wilson had the best session musicians in Los Angeles on this record, and he was using whatever gave him the sound he needed. This was Carl Wilson on lead vocals, Hal Blaine on drums
My 45 of "God Only Knows" appeared as the B-side (other A-side if you will) of "Wouldn't It Be Nice." Looking at the various releases on Discogs releases, some variations occurred in other countries. But my U.S. Capitol single from 1966 had "Wouldn't It Be Nice" as the A-side (peaked @ #8/ 11 weeks on chart) and a couple weeks later "God Only Knows" was also charted and peaked at #39! / 8 weeks on the chart)! Such an injustice. One of the greatest Brian Wilson/Tony Asher (lyrics) songs. The lead singer was Brian Wilson's brother Carl, the guy in the back row on the far left. Both Carl (1946 - 1998/ only 51) and the 3rd Wilson brother, Dennis Wilson (front row on left/ 1944 - 1983/ only 39/ drowning accident) passed away way too young
The Beach Boys used to pray before every performance, a lot of the Bass and background instrumentation were done by the 'Wrecking Crew' in LA :) Carol Kaye was a Bass guru! Watch the videos about the Wrecking Crew!
This is considered by many to be one of their best songs written by Brian Wilson. It was recorded in 1966 on their masterpiece album Pet Sounds. Some say this is Paul McCartney's favorite song. I think they used something like 20 musicians to play all kinds of instruments to give it such a beautiful full sound.
Direct quote from Paul: “God Only Knows is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It's really just a love song, but it's brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian [Wilson].”
Carl Wilson sung lead vocal. This was the first record to have God in its title came out in 1965 and was on the Definitive album “Pet Sounds “ from the master of all Brian Wilson So not surprising Amber hears the horse sounds Have followed them since 1961
this is one of my all time favorite songs. So beautiful though it came from a very troubled mind of Brian WIlson. The name of this song's album is Pet Sounds and it incorporates a lot of animal sounds. A suggestion for your other channel is the movie Love and mercy about brian wilson, very good movie.
I believe that's Carl Wilson singing lead. This is on the Pet Sounds LP, which was one of the first LPs that in order to appreciate it properly, you really had to listen to it all at once (instead of just random tracks), kind of like the Beatles' Rubber Soul, Sgt. Pepper's, etc.
Great song written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher. Sung by the late Carl Wilson, Brian's brother.. The Pet Sounds album is one of the best ever made. Brian Wilson is a genius.
Brian Wilson wrote this (my favorite of all Beach Boys songs) & most of the Beach Boys' songs. His brother, Carl, is singing lead on this one. Youngest brother, Dennis, was the drummer, & the only group member who actually surfed!! Mike Love & Al Jardine were the other original members of the group. Wouldn't It Be Nice is another great one!! So is In My Room. First hit was Surfin' USA in 1963. And, 25 years later, in 1988, a new release of theirs - Kokomo - made it to #1. Excellent song!!! So many, many more, & every one of them is worth listening to!!!!
There are numerous songs that jump across the board from The Beach Boys. This was my era of music. There are a few that come to mind, Graduation Day, Barbra Ann, Kokimo, In My Room and one of my all time favorites, Let’s Do It Again.
The 1966 Pet Sounds album is a masterpiece. Brian has grown so much and now created this music with the Wrecking Crew (professional musians in LA) handling all the instruments and layering in the vocals after the music was done. It ranks with Sargent Peppers as one of the best albums ever created.
This is from the album Pet Sounds which is hailed as one of the best albums ever. In it Brian Wilsons songwriting became more sophisticated. The music is heavily inspired by producer Phil Spectors Wall of Sound which is made by having lots of instruments in the studio playing the same melodies. While Phil Spectors wall of sounds is more angry, Brian Wilson took the same idea and made it beautiful. God Only Knows is a prime example of that and it might not be immediately recognizeable but this was recorded with as many as 19 musicians in the studio at the same time and music from one instrument bleeds into the mic for another instrument which makes the whole wall of sound concept. You have already reacted to By My Baby by the Ronettes which is an example of Phil Spectors Wall of Sound but to get another taste of that you should listen to Da Do Ron Ron by The Crystals which is a prime example of Phil Spectors Wall of Sound. As for more Beach Boys you should check out some of the other songs from Pet Sounds like "I just wasn't made for these times", "Wouldn't it be Nice", "Here Today", or "Caroline No".
The wife and I were at a tribute concert for Elton John some years back. Brian Wilson was one of the artists performing. Imagine my surprise and delight to hear SOMEONE SAVED MY LIFE TONIGHT delivered in that incomparable Beach Boys voice.
The Beach Boys have a great catalog -- Brian Wilson in particular was just brilliant. Check out Sail On Sailor, Til I Die, Surf's Up, In My Room, Surfer Girl, Disney Girls 1957, Our Sweet Love -- so many masterworks.
This is from their Pet Sounds album. The Beatles listened to it and Paul McCartney said "Well how do we top that?' Their next album was Sgt Pepper. Greatness creates greatness.
They used to have a drag race car in the late 60's and early 70's. Every spring and summer they would occasionally come to the track in Tulsa. It was always fun knowing that it was them. They would all gather in the back of a pickup truck and ride down the track after their car would run. Yes, they occasionally would win. They were just in it for fun and the fans really. Great reaction y'all. As always.
Paul McCartney’s favorite song! That picture was from years before this recording. The lead singer is Carl Wilson. This comes from what is arguably one of THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. It actually influenced The Beatles Sgt. Pepper which also has been called one of the greatest albums as well. The Beach Boys only do vocals on this album the music is all from L.A. session aces known as The Wrecking Crew. Amber good ears! THIS was a huge departure for the band. Brian Wilson had grown weary of surfing and car songs and he wrote a work of genius “Pet Sounds” slightly before this Brian had suffered what incorrectly was called a nervous breakdown. They had no idea what it was back then. At any rate he stopped the brutal touring schedule and stayed home and wrote this awesome album. The band continued touring without Brian. One more thing…this was recorded in 1966!!!!! Only The Beatles Rubber Soul stood out like this at the time. That is the year rock changed, due largely to the influence of Rubber Soul and Pet Sounds. Wilson had a condition that processed sounds differently…a friend of mine has the condition and compared it to dyslexia only to the auditory system but Wilson has the much rarer condition Schizoaffective Disorder which is examined in a movie you guys should review “Love and Mercy” It’s awesome! It’s an unvarnished deep dive into Brian Wilson’s life. Also check out the movie “The Wrecking Crew” about the musicians I mentioned earlier. More from “Pet Sounds “ Wouldn’t it Be Nice Sloop John B I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times also Surfs Up In My Room Surfer Girl Heroes and Villains
This was one side of a two hit single. The other side was "Wouldn't It Be Nice", a song I know you would love. Also check out "In My Room", "Wild Honey", and "Sail On Sailor".
The Wrecking Crew was the studio musicians that Brian would use to record all the music. Then the group would come in from touring and Brian would show them all their parts and they would record them. This is Carl Wilson singing on this one. It is hailed as one of the greatest love songs. Brian dictated every single part of this song from strings to percussion. He is an absolute genius. Peace and Love from David in Detroit!
Brian Wilson’s music is achingly beautiful. Listen to ‘Til I Die or Surf’s Up if you want to experience the haunting sadness in his lyrics and melodies. 😊
As an old "surfer dude" in the 70s and 80s in California, these guys were ever present in the surf scene though many groups were favorites but the Beach Boys made surfin' a much more popular sport.....
Now that we're back with the Beach Boys, I'd like to recommend a tune to satisfy Amber's love for hippie vibes, something really different from these guys -- a song off the Surf's Up album from 1971: Feel Flows. I first heard it as part of the soundtrack of the film Almost Famous and it blew me away.

Pet Sounds is one of the best albums ever. Every time I hear something new accousticly !
They are not only legends... but they are STILL GOING!! The are seriously STILL touring!! Amazing group!!!!! I was born in 1981... but I am telling you.. they were the sound of my childhood (Parents ya know) lol.. I just love them!!
They’re a shell of their former selves. Without Brian, there’s no Beach Boys.
Meh. It's mostly Mike Love and a backing band. Without Brian Wilson, is it really The Beach Boys?
Really Mike, give it up already.
Not really the Beach Boys with out any Wilson brothers in the group at this point.
"Sloop John B." is off the same album (Pet Sounds) and has some amazing harmonies.
J & Amber, Their "Help Me Rhonda", "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Fun Fun Fun" are next for you!!!
Wouldn't It Be Nice!
California Girls
Add “Darlin’” to the list.
The album this song is from, Pet Sounds, is considered by musicians and critics as the greatest pop album ever made
"In My Room" and "Don't Worry Baby" are two of my favorite Beach Boy sounds.
MINE TOO along with God Only Knows
Brian Wilson was only 23 when he wrote and arranged this. He recorded it with the Wrecking Crew on instruments and the Beach Boys recorded the vocals afterwards.
Brian Wilson is a goddamn genius. Every audiophile should look into the depth of understanding Wilson instinctively has about music. He is astounding.
Brian Wilson is the writer and producer of the song. Brother Carl is singing and Brian's Wife and Sister in law are the backup singers in the final refrain. ammmmazing song from my teen years!
YES.... Finally, were here. "God Only Knows" beautiful song & one of my all time favourites. 💖💖🎼🎵🎙
"Don't Talk (Put your Head on my Shoulder)" and "Caroline No" were my other favorite songs on that album
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" should be your next one. It's the absolute definition of a classic.
The drumming was courtesy of Hal Blaine of the Wrecking Crew
One of the greatest love songs and most imaginative songs of all times. The dichotomy of the lyrics is that we may not always be together, but if we aren't then there is no reason to go on because we are perfect together. I love hearing the sleigh bells in the background too.
That's a favorite...the layers and orchestration is superb.
Another song...In My Room...deep meaning and beautiful
Direct quote from Paul:
“God Only Knows is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it.
YES! LOVE AND MERCY gives us lot of perspective on the genius of Brian Wilson
This is my favorite Beach Boys songs and I agree with Paul McCartney this song gets me teary every time.
You should react to their song “Forever” it has Dennis Wilson on lead vocals (it was also written by him).
I had (have) the biggest crush on Dennis 😍😍 (RIP 😔)
In My Room....it's a whole mood.
This is without a doubt my favorite song of all time! An absolute masterpiece by Brian Wilson!!
I would recommend my personal favorites from them; "In My Room" and "Surfer Girl"
Great song written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher. Sung by the late Carl Wilson, Brian's brother.. The Pet Sounds album is one of the best ever made. Brian Wilson is a genius.
A masterpiece and so beautifully crafted. For me one of their very best and no one has come close to perfecting harmonies like they do. Stunning ❤️
Brain Wilson has said he wrote this song ,,,just for his brother Carl to sing it ,,,the voice of an angel ,,,may he R.I.P.
Both of those albums are outside the top 10 for me. I think they get a big pass from people because of who they are.
God Only Knows is sung by Carl Wilson on the far left.
This. Anything from Pet Sounds.
When I bought my record player, Pet Sounds was one of the first vinyls I bought.
The most beautiful song ever written ❤️
One more thing…this was recorded in
1966!!!!!
Only The Beatles Rubber Soul stood out like this at the time.
That is the year rock changed, due largely to the influence of Rubber Soul and Pet Sounds.
Wilson had a condition that processed sounds differently…a friend of mine has the condition and compared it to dyslexia only to the auditory system but Wilson has the much rarer condition
Schizoaffective Disorder which is examined in a movie you guys should review “Love and Mercy”
It’s awesome! It’s an unvarnished deep dive into Brian Wilson’s life. Also check out the movie
“The Wrecking Crew” about the musicians I mentioned earlier.

Just remembered Sloop John B. 💕
Thanks Jean. 👍
Do Fun, Fun, Fun it is my fav Beach Boys Song
I believe Carl Wilson was the lead on this song. He had a beautiful voice. I love your reactions. Do Kokomo next. That is a good summer song.
Wasn't it Brian? Always thought he was lead on most of them
Their voices are so similar it hard to tell.
It was Carl on lead. At the 50th reunion concert, they had a video of Carl singing and the rest of the band singing backup live.
@@nadzee7101 Their voices are similar, but Carl's voice had an angelic quality about it. Brian gave this song to Carl.
One of the greatest songs ever written, their best song by a mile
I read that Paul McCartney wished he wrote this song. Oh yeah and David Bowie did a great cover of it.
Thank God none of them said "Okay" as a cheap response/exclamation. I like the way they listen.
In my room. My favorite BB song.
The sounds of Southern California in the 60’s
"So what good would livin do me?" One of the most heartbreaking lines of any song ever...
Brian Wilson’s music is achingly beautiful. Listen to ‘Til I Die or Surf’s Up if you want to experience the haunting sadness in his lyrics and melodies. 😊
Surf’s Up was singled out by New York Philharmonic conductor Leonard Bernstein on his TV show
@@andyo3689 It was.
My very first and favorite band, ever to hear! First saw them at Lagoon in Utah at age 15! Still my favorite.❤
As an old "surfer dude" in the 70s and 80s in California, these guys were ever present in the surf scene though many groups were favorites but the Beach Boys made surfin' a much more popular sport.....
"Fun, fun, fun" is the very definition of the Beachboys' sound.
Surf's Up is a fabulous song.
You're right, Jay, it is "an old classic sound" - the beach Boys are classic but also have their own very distinctive sound. No one else like them!
