Everyone in the country watched The Ed Sullivan Show every Sunday evening for 27 years. It was what families did in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Ed was the most powerful celebrity on TV - he could make or break your career in a heartbeat. If he called you over after your performance to stand with him for a few seconds - you knew you made it. Every famous movie star, tv star, Broadway star, nightclub star, sports star, politician, circus star, ventriloquist, puppeteer, acrobats, writers, authors, playwright, etc. made an appearance on his show. A piece of Americana history.
That third song ‘l Want You Back’ was the first of four consecutive number one hits by the group. It was followed by ABC, The Love You Save and I’ll Be There. When the group left Motown in 1975, (brother Jermaine remained with the label) they became the Jacksons.

It continues to blow my mind that he was a performer, giving it everything he had on stage from this age literally until the day he died. That is just crazy
The Jackson 5 was HUGE! They had hit after hit after hit in the early 70s. They were the first black teen idols and even had their own Saturday morning cartoon!
My family and I lived in Gary, Indiana in the '60's when the Jacksons lived there. Where we lived and where the Jacksons lived were on opposite sides of Gary. In 1968, my oldest sister graduated from high school, and the Jackson Five sang at her graduation. This was about a year or two before the Jackson FIve had their first hit.
Michael is the most naturally gifted performer of all time and THEN when crazy in perfecting his craft on top of that talent. He did both things. Natural talent + an insane work ethic and that is why he is the GOAT and we won't see anything close to him in our lifetimes.
@@kellylassen6769 All of the Jackson's were musically talented. Did you ever see Godspell the rock musical. Merrell was great in it singing All Good Gifts.
I don’t know the two hosts, but I’m always blown away when I go back and listen to Michael again. He was a once in a lifetime type of talent. A true phenom
Put some respect on Jermaine too, he was the other brother playing bass and singing co-lead. He was the only other brother in the group to have major solo success while still in the group and after he left the group in 75.
On the record I want you back the bass was played by jazz legend Wilton Felder of the Crusaders. He also played bass on their hit ABC and on Marvin Gaye's hit Let's get it on.
@@samuraiwarriorsunite Yeah, Tito and Jermaine had to learn to play the parts live tho. That's a big reason why the group left Motown, once they were at epic they had more freedom and could produce and play during the session.
@@XP9724 Yes, Berry Gordy wouldn't let them play on the record even though they wanted too. They realized the band was the most important thing. Pretty mature reasoning at their age.
When I was a kid, my Mom had a radio in the kitchen on a shelf and I remeber the Jackson Five would come on and play while we had breakfast before school. Songs like ABC easy as 123. Love it. Great memory.
I didn't see this in the comments, so just thought I'd list the songs: The first song was "Stand" by Sly and the Family Stone. The second was "Who's Loving You" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (though many consider the Jackson 5 cover to be the definitive version now). The third song was "I Want You Back", an original by The Jackson 5, which I think was their first #1 hit.
I'd like to see y'all react to their music video Blame it on the Boogie. Michael was killing then too. They were older and went under the name the Jacksons then because they left motown. !!!!
This isn’t the earliest days of Michael’s career. He had been singing and dancing for several years already. Those boys were pros and performed like a well oiled machine. In many ways, the Jackson Five and the Osmonds paralleled each other. Their styles were different but they were five brothers from large families. Donny Osmond said later that they sometimes stayed in the same hotels on tours and they would play football in the hallways. (They had to hunker down inside; they would’ve been mobbed by adoring fans if they left the hotel).
Oh yeah, SO many great Jackson 5 songs for you to hear. These cats even had their own Saturday morning cartoon back in the day, LOL! Thanks for sharing this one! 🙂
"Easy as 1-2-3" should be your next Jackson 5 song, maybe their most famous one. I remember hearing them on the radio in the '70's, before Michael started his solo career.
They're all great but Michael was just something out of this world. The amount of talent, charisma and professionalism at such a young age. What a tragic loss
The last song they did was a hit for them. They were together as a professional group for about 12 years. When they left Motown, Jermaine ( on Bass ) stayed with the label mainly because he was married to the daughter of the owner of Motown. Then the youngest brother ( Randy ) replaced Jermaine. They stayed together for a few more years until Michael went solo. The rest of the group member's went solo for a short time period, but were not very successful. Over the years while Michael was a solo act, he would still perform with his brother's on tour from time to time. All of the sister's ( Rebbie, LaToya and Janet ) had solo careers with Janet being the most successful. Michael was the youngest at 10 years old in this video.
Even tho the other brothers weren't as successful as Michael or Jermaine, one cool thing that makes this family so legendary is that all 9 siblings had at least 1 charting hit throughout their careers. Making them the only family in music history to do something like that which is pretty awesome.
The Jackson 5 was the first concert that I ever saw. It was 1973 and I was 8 years old. I was fascinated to say the least. Of course I'd heard their records and seem them on TV but this was something else. Yes, they were famous and great singers but they were kids too. They were kids that looked me. I knew all of their names. Michael, Marlon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie.
The other brother who helped with some of the lead vocals was Jermaine,he was actually the first one to leave the group because he married Berry Gordy's daughter and as a show of loyalty he stayed behind when the rest of the group wanted to leave Motown. He went on to have a good solo career. When Jermaine left the group their youngest brother Randy joined the group and they were called The Jacksons from that point on. They also have 2 sisters besides Janet.
This was during their Motown years back in Detroit. Late 60s and early 70s. I was a baby around this time, living in the area. Janet Jackson was a toddler. During those years, Motown was huge. The Jackson family came from Gary Indiana to Detroit to make music. And the rest is history.
Wow, talk about memory flashback...I can remember watching these variety shows back in the day. Growing up at this time the whole family would gather together in the living room to watch the Jackson 5 and many others perform on the many variety shows we had back then. Side note: their Christmas album from the 70's is one of my favorites.
The Jackson 5, later known as The Jacksons, enjoyed a long and dynamic career with some notable changes along the way. They began as The Jackson 5 in 1964 and achieved major success with hits like "I Want You Back" and "ABC," remaining active under this name until 1975. After leaving Motown and rebranding as The Jacksons, they continued to perform and record together until 1989. Though their primary periods of activity were from 1964 to 1975 as The Jackson 5 and from 1975 to 1989 as The Jacksons, the group also had reunions and performances beyond these years.
Growing up watching them and then Michael, I've always felt that their Fame and Talent was a blessing and a curse. 🫶 This brings back such fond memories.
At the time that this show was taped, Janet who was born in 1966, would have been 3 years old. The Jackson Five, were considered as one of the first boy bands. They were a huge success. In the family there are 6 boys and 3 girls. Jermaine had a decent solo career. The oldest child Rebbie had a big hit with a track called Centipede. All of the boys had solo albums. It just happened that Janet and Michael turned out to have the greatest solo success. Both are major stars. Just some basic information about the Jackson Family.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Would love to see you react to MJ’s Come Together and Earth Song MV’s! 🫶🏼😊 Come together is his Version of the Beatles’ Track and lemme tell ya - he took the track to a whole another level! 🔥
It continues to blow my mind that he was a performer, giving it everything he had on stage from this age literally until the day he died. That is just crazy
Late `69, I was 10, and our generation was blown away.
Yes, we were. I was six. They were a cultural phenomenon. 💛
Me too.
'Abso damn lutely!"...
The Jackson 5 was HUGE! They had hit after hit after hit in the early 70s. They were the first black teen idols and even had their own Saturday morning cartoon!
They were pop royalty in the early 70’s, I remember being a huge fan
Everybody on Ed Sullivan (at least in the 60's) was LIVE. Everyone on tv and records then had talent galore.
Michael and The Jackson 5 were insanely talented. He was a natural superstar…I saw Michael’s Off The Wall Tour in the 1980’s.
They had a Saturday morning cartoon, as well. Based on all the brothers.
As well as the Osmond brothers.
@@TristanandIsolt I remember that too!
@@kellylassen6769 All of the Jackson's were musically talented. Did you ever see Godspell the rock musical. Merrell was great in it singing All Good Gifts.
@@TristanandIsolt Yes I did!
@@kellylassen6769 Merrell flat out blew me away singing that.
I don’t know the two hosts, but I’m always blown away when I go back and listen to Michael again. He was a once in a lifetime type of talent. A true phenom
Look at lil MJ...he was born a STAR!
R.I.P To The King Of Music Michael Jackson, Still Miss You Always 😢,Gone To Soon
king of Pop i can give him,...the king of music is Prince.
R.I.P. to 2 kings
The Jackson 5 were a phenomenon…they were huge.,,worldwide.
This is classic! Hes 10....it almost makes me cry.
Me too!
Regardless, Jermaine was a great vocalist.
Greatest entertainer of all time. Reigned for 50/yrs. One of a kind. R.I.P
When I was a kid, my Mom had a radio in the kitchen on a shelf and I remeber the Jackson Five would come on and play while we had breakfast before school. Songs like ABC easy as 123. Love it. Great memory.
I find it astonishing that any American over 25 can know so little about the Jackson 5
How could he not know about the Jackson 5
For real. And how could they not know about the Jackson family in general? It's sad isn't it?
I'd like to see y'all react to their music video Blame it on the Boogie. Michael was killing then too. They were older and went under the name the Jacksons then because they left motown.
!!!!
It was live singing, no auto tune back then! NAUGHTY BY NATURE SAMPLED IT....
I didn't know that story, how sweet. Thanks for sharing.
"I'll Be There" and "Ben"
I'll Be There for me, is the best J5 song.
"Ben" is a Michael's solo
Have loved Michael and the Jacksons since I was 9.
Weird now to hear him singing these ‘love songs’ when he was only a 10 year old 😉
Oh yeah, SO many great Jackson 5 songs for you to hear.
If you decide to listen to this song next - the title is "ABC".
Yes, also in Germany 😊
@@da.ma.ba123 Awesome.
You know your stuff! MJ was a legend
@sunshinehoover4630 Yes he was.
Even tho the other brothers weren't as successful as Michael or Jermaine, one cool thing that makes this family so legendary is that all 9 siblings had at least 1 charting hit throughout their careers. Making them the only family in music history to do something like that which is pretty awesome.
1988 grammy’s michael jackson performance you guys would love it.
I LOVE that performance, and was mad Michael didn't get any Grammy's, because he really deserved them!
His vocal choices at this age🤯
At the time that this show was taped, Janet who was born in 1966, would have been 3 years old. The Jackson Five, were considered as one of the first boy bands. They were a huge success. In the family there are 6 boys and 3 girls. Jermaine had a decent solo career. The oldest child Rebbie had a big hit with a track called Centipede. All of the boys had solo albums. It just happened that Janet and Michael turned out to have the greatest solo success. Both are major stars. Just some basic information about the Jackson Family.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
First group to have 4 #1 records (singles) in a row! (my fave group of all time)
Michael was just so amazing. He was so cute. ❤
They were so professional and mega talented. I'm sure I had a couple of their 45s. 😊
You can literally feel their energy the moment the music hits you. The Jackson 5 was legendary. (RIP Michael)
It is live and no auto tune cause it didnt exist. God given talent. People new how to sing back in the day
5:57 En Vogue version of Hold On starts with ‘When I, had you, I treated you bad, but since you went away, don’t you know I, sit around, with my head hanging down and I wonder, who’s loving you.’
Great throwback.
the ed sullivan show was/is a wealth of entertainment history. we are so fortunate to have these performances preserved for future generations.
Always live in those days You had to have real talent back then. No auto tune, no lip syncing. Great reaction guys.
Exactly, real talent🙌🏾
Exactly
Such a cultural difference. I'm around your age and I grew up on the Jackson 5. My Mom had a huge crush on Jackie when she was a teenager 😅
These songs have been in soo many tv shows and movies like Drumline and Bikerboyz. Timeless multigenerational music that still sounds amazing 😁
Michael is one in a million. God, how we miss him. J5 was incredible, those were the good ol days. 🙏🙏🙏
I have never seen this performance!! Epic . Great job guys 👏🏾
Isnt it a shame that this amazing talented kid, ended up destroyed by the media and now he is no longer with us. Saw him live twice and no one has ever beaten him. Saw his brothers live too but only one Michael. RIP ❤❤❤
