      Back in 2014, when the BBC over in the UK launched a music channel they decided to use this song as part of their announcement, and as a way to feature all the different singers/genres you could find on the channel: th-cam.com/video/XqLTe8h0-jo/w-d-xo.html
      Hundreds, if not Thousands, of iconic songs from iconic British bands -- and they chose a song from an American group -- it really shows you just how powerful the song is.
      Even Paul McCartney has referred to it as his favorite song of all time, and going on to add:
      "“God Only Knows’ is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian. I’ve actually performed it with him and I’m afraid to say that during the sound check I broke down. It was just too much to stand there singing this song that does my head in and to stand there singing it with Brian,”"

      If you're interested in ground-breaking production values that paved the way for Brian Wilson, check out the psycho killer himself, Phil Spector. He worked with the Righteous Brothers, the Ronettes, Ike &Tina Tuner amongst others. He famously (or infamously) worked on a Beatles album and pulled a gun on the Ramones. Years later, he's now rotting in jail for murder.

    I always thought that The Beach Boys are too often dismissed as a bubble gum “surf band” and many people don’t truly appreciate that they are one of the best harmonizing groups ever!

      They certainly were, along with the Everly Brothers at that time, influencing so many bands to come. It is difficult, and I give these two kids credit for trying, to get into the frame of mind and the culture that was the 60's & 70's, to appreciate this music.

      From what I remember, Brian Wilson, the main writer for the band's most popular hits actually hated the beach. The one member that seemed to actually fit the lifestyle demonstrated by the themes in these songs was the drummer, Dennis, who actually drowned in a boating accident.

      Brian Wilson wrote this and almost everything The Beach Boys recorded. Paul McCartney called it the “most perfect song yet written”, which made Brian despondent. He thought that if it were the most perfect song yet written he could never top it, and that would mean the rest of his career would be headed downhill. He went kind of nuts and gave up touring. Glenn Campbell took his place in the touring band.

    Only song I know written in two simultaneous keys in the verse and instrumental break, ( chorus is in A major) Bassline is in D major and Treble clef is in A major in the verses before jumping up a 4th bass in G and treble in D in the vocal middle break It slips down a 4th for final verse without you even realising . WHEN DID YOU BECOME AWARE OF THE BEACH BOYS?
      PAUL: “The early surf records…I was aware of them as a musical act, and I used to like all that, but I didn’t get deeply interested in it-it was just a real nice sound…We used to admire the singing, the high falsetto really and the very sort of ‘California’ lyrics.
      “It was later…it was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. First of all, it was Brian’s writing. I love the album so much. I’ve just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life-I figure no one is educated musically ’til they’ve heard that album.

    Pet Sounds is an incredible album. It also inspired Sgt. Pepper, which in turn made Brian Wilson have a mental breakdown

    • @lukeizabelle2131
      @lukeizabelle2131 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well, not only that, also because of taking too much drugs like for example LSD, the pressure from both the public, critics and Capitol records, to release something really genius that would beat Pet Sounds and anything that the Beatles have done or were doing, his cousin Mike Love basically hating the music that he was doing for what would have become Smile album (which in the end obviously didn't happen, I mean it wasn't released at all) which has to do with the fact that Love didn't understand at all the groundbreaking music that Brian was doing and the fact that he feared it wouldn't sell that much as their previous hits etc. Brian Wilson had too many things that were against him unfortunately plus he was a very sensitive man. If only he had the same human and artistic support that the Beatles were having from each other and from George Martin, maybe there would have been some better chance for him to not have fallen from that infamous mental breakdown, such a shame

    • @vKarl7
      @vKarl7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sgt Pepper didn’t make him have a mental breakdown. Always putting speed in his bowls that he smoked, coupled with the band not fully supporting his new masterpiece SMiLE and all the pressure he was under made him have a mental breakdown. He was already completely paranoid when Pepper came out; that just added insult to injury because he knew he could have beaten them had he finished SMiLE on time.
      It wasn’t the LSD, either, which he only ever took twice. IT WAS THE METH.

      @@vKarl7 He was being paranoid since 1964 (although he had have a nervous breakdown in 1963 If I remember correctly), he'd listen in a loop to the beginning of 'Be my baby', the Ronettes song composed and produced by Phil Spector... he was obsessed with Spector to the point of madness, when he did mistake a journalist that was visiting him in his house, with a disguised Spector... He, then, started to smoke pot when a few people were doing it, the LSD came later, but he was already emotional and mentally damaged. The recording of Smile was the deffinitive breaking point. He was so perfectionist about it that couldn't finished it... and here comes the multiple theories about Smile, if it was ready to be released, if it was just a collection of recorded sketches and so on

    Ohhhh my goodness, Carl Wilson's voice in this song is so beautiful, it's enough to make you cry. The high pitch voice at the end is Brian Wilson. Wow. No one harmonizes better than the Beach Boys. Okay, the Bee Gees are close, but no... the Beach Boys are unparalleled.

    There are some finished tracks from the Smile sessions which carry things even further than Pet Sounds. "Cabinessense", "Surf's Up", "Heroes and Villains" (not the Smiley Smile version) are all masterpieces of studio production and mind-blowing examples of orchestral psychedelia.

    Paul McCartney about this song: "I love that melody. That kills me, that melody. [hums the first verse, bursts into song at 'I wanna cry.' ] That's my favorite, I think. The way that's arranged, where it goes away very quietly. I was in the car the other night, and I was telling the kids, saying, 'wait, wait, here it comes.' And then it comes back, and it's so beautiful right at the end, comes surging back in these multi-colored harmonies. Sends shivers up my spine. That's one of my favorite tracks."

Goes back and forth between the 60s experimental era and the mid 80s when he was mentally in really bad shape, but trying to get better. It's fantastic! Anyway, keep up the great work!
