  • I re-painted my Stainless Steel Swedish Army Cook Set.
    For those of you who have ever wondered if it’s worth owning, here are my thoughts as a stove aholic.

    Very nicely done. I like your set up and style.
    I used my kids college fund to buy myself a set. He will inherit it someday. We so think alike.
    I am 53 and close to retirement. I'd rather be outside cooking with my Swedish mess kit..watching the sunset, than watching any TV show.

    A new party dress & looking brand new. Not bad for something around 80 years old! I’ve been thinking about doing this with one of mine; think I’ll give it a go now. Enjoying the channel btw!

      Thanks Sean. I was deliberating for a while if it was the right thing to do then decided to go for it. Glad I did. Bet yours is looking forward to putting on a cheeky little number for a special day out lol

    Kudos on the paint and restoration project. Few things stand the test of time like good old fashion stainless steel. I am curious to know how the paint job holds up. Was it worth the effort? Or would it have been better just polish that old girl to make her shine. I have a 1 liter stainless steel measuring cup (minted in India) that I have beaten around the bush for years. It cleans up and shines with a bit of elbow grease. There's usually a bit of patina l leave on, which makes it look even sexier. Cheers from Montreal QC

      Paint holding up just fine but I do not use it enough to give test the durability. Old stuff was nasty. It was one of my ideas that turned out to be quite satisfying 👍

    Cracking stove this, the new paint job looks great too. Just managed to get my hands on one...I’m over the moon! Can I please ask how you removed the old paint on yours?

      Hi Rob, thanks. I used paint stripper to get the old gunk off as did not want to be grinding for hours. Have no idea what was in the original paint or if it was hazardous but it’s tough stuff. If I remember rightly it took about three goes to strip it off properly. Was very pleased with the stove paint finish. Gave mine four thin coats to build it up. Hope yours turns out great. It’s a lovely bit of kit and great fun to use. All the best 👍

      Thank you for your reply, definitely going to strip all of the paint off and then have a think about painting it, still undecided on that one. I need to fabricate another hook to attach to the bail as mine is missing, I think it will be pretty simple to bend some 4mm stainless steel bar to replicate what was there before. Really excited about this project, I have an aluminium one and love using it. Thank again for your reply.

      @@roboutdoors1860 I have one that's already stripped. I've been umming and aaahing about painting it. Is it necessary? Will I wreck it if I use it as it is?

    • @InfoZhedExplore
      @InfoZhedExplore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To my knowledge the original paint on these was added primarily to stop any shine that would give away the soldiers position. As it’s stainless steel there should not be any issues using it stripped.

    • @roboutdoors1860
      @roboutdoors1860 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, should be fine. The issue I have at the moment it with finding an appropriate paint stripper to use. I have tried acetone and it doesn’t work. I’m hesitant to use something like nitromorse as it is poisonous and not sure if I should use this on something I will be cooking in? I know it is only on the outside but still concerns me. What type of paint stripper did you end up using please?

    I have owned a Swedish M44 aluminum kit for decades. Recently I got lucky & found the M40 Stainless Steel for less than 20 dollars on Ebay from a seller who didn't know what they had. I removed the paint from my lid, but kept the bottom pan in original paint. They sell for over 100 dollars used usually, when you can find them here in the USA. The Last one i saw on auction went for 147 dollars.😱 The stainless steel versions were only made from 1940-1944 from what I have been able to find out.
    Fantastic cook set when paired up with the Trangia & windscreen. Will last more than one lifetime unless you run it over with a tank.

      Well done on a great buy. After using mine I think the stainless steel is definitely worth a buy and is unlikely to loose any value. It’s a privilege to own one of these great pieces of history.

      One of these popped up in my local thriftshop in the Netherlands today. It's the stainless steel M40 model. Coud'nt believe my eyes! Paid 12,50 Euro for it and left the shop with a big smile on my face : )

    Brilliant stoves, I have 2 stainless and 2 aluminium, one of each type is unused and I’m keeping them that way for posterity. Just to be pedantic, I feel obliged to mention that technically, an antique has to be over 100 years old, to be called an antique.
    Anyway, have you seen the Russian VDV mess kit, issued to paratroopers, it’s a cracking piece of kit, same idea as this and the German ones, but it has an integral canteen. Interestingly, it can be adapted to use as a still. Another favourite of mine is the Swiss army “Volcano stove”, one of my favourites for a day trip, for brews and soup.😁

      I also have an unused aluminium one and am keeping it for the same reason as you lol. The Swiss volcano is great when paired with a Stanley Cookset lid. Thanks for the input 👍

    Enjoying your videos and they inspired me to dig out my M40 Alu set. It's May tomorrow and there might, just might, be a chance to get away in the camper - IF I can find a site with a pitch that's free!
    But where's the cook set gone? It's not in the camper, it's not in the loft and it's not in the shed! All I could find was the fuel bottle and the SVEA burner (three crowns and HP86 stamped - 1986?).
    I'm guessing it got left behind at a campsite during the summer Covid break last year. So time to find a replacement. Absolutely shocked at the prices nowadays - I bought two for £25 about 15 years ago (one for a friend to save on postage) and now people are asking silly money for them - they seem to have become fashionable.
    So I cast around for an alternative and started searching for a Swiss META 50 cookset. Stumbled upon a company called Genuine Army Surplus in Darlington (UK) and was amazed to find Swedish, stainless steeel cooksets for sale!
    It arrived today 30th April.
    More of a grey-green than my old one (IIRC) the pans aren't three crown marked but do have the four leaf clover on the handle and are stamped PRESSBOLAGET ESKILSTUNA which is, apparently a large manufacturing concern in Sweden. The SVEA burner DOES have three crowns and is stamped NC65 - I'm assuming 1965? It might be a Civil Defence version though I understand they didn't have the two D rings or the coat-hanger bail arm?
    It's immaculate and never issued though it arrived looking grim and smelt bad. The "fry pan" is a very tight fit if used over the main pot - the main pot needs squeezing on the minor axis of the ellipse and the paint IS very thick.
    Otherwise pleased as punch. I'll likely strip all the paint off and then decide which bits, if any, I'll respray. The windsheild is unmarked and looks freshly made. Have also bought a Tatonka simmer ring.
    So, now looking out for a camp site to visit.
    Oh, just realised haven't told you how much it cost - brace yourselves and check out

      Great job Jeffrey, just goes to show that there are still some bargains out there occasionally but a person needs to look hard and be patient. I paid a lot more than you and thought mine was an absolute steal but you hit the jackpot there. The paint on mine was really thick too so I stripped it with paint stripper and am really pleased with the results. Happy cooking and try not to loose it lol.

    I sold mine a decade ago during a post divorce downsize .
    Regret it now, although I've a trangia 27 which is just as good.

      @InfoZhedExplore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Trangia 27 is probably better in a lot of ways. I have the 25 and really enjoy using it but there is something a bit special about the M40 as a fully functioning piece of history. Hope you manage to pick up a replacement at some point for a reasonable price 👍
