      I suggest giving it another go if you can! There's a lot of great videos like these that might help with doom-scrolling (depending on what's going on with you IRL, and if the doom-scrolling is to avoid some deeper issues). There's also ways to train your brain to gain back focus for long-form content (even with ADHD), and there's focus aides that could help too.

      Addiction to substances works like this... You take a substance and that substance goes into a receptor and gives a "command" to release dopamine in your brain for example and you get hooked to that dopamine rush and want it again and again and again... Scrolling on your phone does the exact same thing. You see something interesting and fun and it releases dopamine and other goodies in your brain and you want it again and again and again. In a nutshell they are the same thing but doing drugs is more intense and more dangerous.

    A small note on 9:12: don’t push yourself to go too deep! That can lead to rumination-thinking circularly about one thing for long periods of time. Let your feelings tell you where they are right now, and don’t force them to be something else. Once you’ve identified a feeling, you can decide how you’d like to respond to it. If you feel small or sad, is it telling you you need a certain kind of comfort, perhaps from a friend? If you feel angry, is it telling you that something in your life needs to change? If you’re lonelier than usual, what does that difference mean to you? Don’t force analysis, either-your feelings are like magnets. They’ll tell you what they want to gravitate toward. These are just my two cents, though, based on my own experiences. Highly recommend talking to a therapist if you can.

      Yea as someone with borderline personality disorder ....i try to avoid doing this in general.... sitting with my pure feelings is emotions is how i end up in the hospital and being sent off. Im not able to calm myself down by myself. Im not able to regulate going into the most extremes. Like when i get anxious i get so anxious that it would turn into a anxiety attack and i would literally fall apart.
      Its like my amigila and my frontal lobe dont give a shit about each other and thus dont listen to each other AT ALL.
      I would feel anxious and i literally cant stop feeling anxious no matter what i tell myself. Im very very self aware and i know its irrational to feel this way and its not that big of a deal but feel like this anyways. My body will feel feelings and it don't matter what thought process i try to get out of it ...

    While I think all the points in this video are great I also feel like nowadays this issue of doomscrolling is presented so one sidedly. As if there are only two options: Either be a mindless scroll-zombie or live a life almost devoid of modern media. I don't agree with that.
    When I watch my favorite shows, play a really good video game or absolutely go nuts to my favorite music I do not regret that time spent. Then I am actively engaged with the medium, I don't scroll on the side or get bored in-between. I'm focused, I am thinking about the things happening and they're implications/meaning, I might rewind or pause to give myself time to experience what is happening at my own pace. That feels very different from doomscrolling.
    I still think engaging with media all day everyday will make you unhappy even if its ""good media"" but its completely fine to consume media if you are actively enjoying yourself.
    When im thinking about what I watched or played hours later and notice myself engaging with and enjoying that memory, thats a sign for me that that was a ""good"" type of media engagement.

      REAL i love talking to myself out loud, it's such a fun thing to do when i'm bored or just want to say stuff without there being anyone to interrupt me, and it can even help me process my thoughts and ideas and make new ones. i have literally talked myself into exhaustion multiple times just because i find it so fun and soothing to do when nothing's going on and i'm having a lot of ideas about things :D

    A heartfelt thanks for this.
    I stopped shorts 2 years ago, noticing that I felt isolated and contradictory, not someone I wanted to be. Now when I watch or play games it is either to pass the time (as one does with nothing to do) or it is to decompress from something I did do.
    The joke about playing a game for a second job does apply in some cases, but I know it’s a game, and it allows me to relax from hands on work, school, or a bad day, by taking my mind away from those things.
    In that regard, I think playing or watching is time well spent if it helps me get to a better place. I do need to work on the passing time part, but I am making progress. I am a better friend to myself today than yesterday

    A couple of years ago while laid off from work I got in the greatest shape in my life. Physically, mentally, and spiritually, I was in complete control of myself and not a thing could stop me. I have lost my grip and footing on that control since then but am actively interested in working to reclaim that and this video really is what I needed. Everything that you’ve gone through is as true as anyone could ever want it to be. It works too. I want to be better and I will be better again.     Just a few notes. I don't think "Trash Music" is a problem actually. As a musician, music is supposed to be emotional. Just because it is not calming, doesn't make it bad. I would agree that having a constant stream of music is not ideal. If you listen to music, make sure you listen to music you like, and you listen actively. Make listening the activity.

      Agreed. Music is art. You wouldn't advise avoiding "high-dopamine paintings" to kick an Internet addiction. That "trash music" is often very deeply meaningful to me on an almost spiritual level, and I could never reduce it to just mindless media consumption.
      Honestly, I don't even find myself listening to music I find personally meaningless unless it's for social reasons (sharing music with others/hearing others' suggestions out even if it turns out to not be my thing, which I think is a positive thing as it gives me an opportunity to challenge my preconceived notions). Why would I? I've never found myself thinking, "Man, I should really cut down on my music listening time. It's keeping me from living life." But granted, he did say you don't have to follow that exact same list.

I am into Nerdcore and I choose songs that have deeper meaning to me about the stories they were inspired from. It gets me on a train of thought that I follow through myself.     I like dissociating and feeling numb. Its calming for me. I do not like social media, i play freecell and listening to cerebrally stimulating music. I like being in the void and feeling free. This is all too much. I do not want to connect with others or anything. I just want to exist within all that is and be in harmony with everything.

      yeah but you cant live your life like this. whatever you prefer, in order to survive in this world, you literally cannot do this unless you're wealthy lol. food, a roof over your head, the wifi and technology you need, everything comes at a cost, one that you cannot pay for without the help of someone else. so unless you have that someone else secured for the rest of your life, you NEED to wake up. real life is not going to be so kind to you so you better start preparing now.
      trust me when i say i like those things too. i love sleeping and being unemployed and doing nothing all day but cuddling with my cat and my hobbies like drawing, reading, existing in comfy blankets, video games, etc etc, but whos going to pay for those things ? who is going to provide me with those things if im an adult ? exactly. you just need to find a balance. you can still have this experience, but you have to have it in moderation. and this isnt a new thing, life has been like this for a long time (again, unless youre wealthy, in which case a lot of it is easily done for you, but not many of us are that fortunate..)

    Hey, just wanted to say that watching this has helped me kickstart a major breakthrough in therapy and learning to develop a healthier kind of attachment to others and feeling secure on my own. Turns out step one was allowing myself to feel bad and think about why I felt that way. Strong negative emotions don't feel nice, but embracing them really is important and a lot of good can come from it. Not to mention that it's genuinely the only way to completely relieve those emotions. So yeah, thank you!

    As someone with ADHD I’ve come to learn through experimentation that we need more body movement than we realize. I’m medicated because I have a bad level of ADHD but combining the medication with exercise is honestly, wow.
    When you stay seated or without moving your body for too long but use mental stimulation, it actually “harms” you more than most realize. It can cause depression, dissociation, anxiety, etc. if you have ADHD you’re much more vulnerable and you need to actively work towards correcting that loop.

      Totally agree! I work from home, tethered to a computer - but getting a yoga ball instead of a chair has been a game changer!! I constantly fidget and roll around on it while on calls, in meetings, writing emails.. I’ve noticed much more mental clarity and physical energy 😊

      As someone with adhd my phone addiction got so bad I didn’t know what to do. Screen limits didn’t work I have no self control. The phone is a physical object.I ended up regularly pouring honey on my phone which makes using my phone unpleasant if I don’t want sticky fingers. It is the only thing that works, when I see honey on my screen it makes me think twice about clicking on it

    This video was beautiful thank you for this, please continue to spread your message, I’m 17 and a scarily high percentage of people around my age and younger are all addicted to this scrolling, mainly short form videos such as tiktok,instagram reels, TH-cam shorts and it seriously worries me because of the sheer scale of this problem, I don’t think there’s anyone I know that doesn’t at least spend a little while scrolling on social media and I’m worried people will struggle to think for themselves and escape the loop and that it will only continue to get worse for the majority of us young people.

    one piece of advice: let yourself be in discomfort off your phone. put it down, accept the discomfort of not scrolling, and genuinely sit in the feeling of anxiety and pull you have back towards it. sit in the discomfort. stare at the ceiling like when you were a kid. let your brain breathe. do it for longer than it feels comfortable to do. every time you feel the urge to open your phone again, push a little bit harder.
    it’ll end, eventually. but you just got a few moments back. and it’s all about making a start, 1% differences adding up over time.

    Part of what helped me was getting back to the play I enjoyed as a kid, especially through playing farming games like harvest moon. The slow pace, calming soundtrack, and peaceful atmosphere helped me reconnect and rest

      If you know Spyro, just hop into the homeworlds of Spyro 2, they have a nice tranquil vibe and peaceful music. In fact I often have the tracks on (as well as custom ones I made, yes I’m a nerd) in the background for general ambience and I think it helps my anxiety. Certain keys give me nightmares though for some reason? Still trying to figure that one out. Particularly F sharp gave me a nightmare 2 different times? (More nerdy stuff) but oh well I’m just here to ramble lol

    I'd say i'm on a journey of detoxifying myself from social media right now. My goal isn't to completely get rid of it but to be able to take it in small doses (setting a screentime has been helpful). i've also started to try and replace short form content to longer content (as in, watching series and movies instead of tiktok) and that has made me realise just how much frying the high attention short form content is. I still fall back on it though, but thankfully i've already embarked on a self loving journey long ago and that has helped me with not bringing myself down for it. Journaling and meditation are helping as well as the fact my social life has skyrocketed the past year. Redescovering reading has also helped me. Overall, i hope to get better for the new year coming and i hope i can reach adulthood a more realised person (since i do turn 18 next year). Hope everyone here also trying to improve themselves has the best time ♡

I've been journaling on and off since I was 12 and ended up with a pile of notebooks documenting my personal growth and all the most important events that happened in my life in the last decade that I can read and look back on when I'm feeling lost and distant from my sense of self

    The part when you said it can scare the amygdala is so real. I was doing something similar last summer and at first is was terrible, until i started liking the quietness of having a quiet life. But i wasn`t expanding my socialization or the relationship with my circle, so a while later i stopped and went back to not so great digital habits, and the feeling it was worse than before because i knew how habing good habits felt, at least it gave me the motivation to go back to good habits to feel great again.
    I also started a process of grief that i had been avoiding for many years when i started the quiet life and it kicked me hard, but it was just for a while and felt great after letting myself feel.

      It actually isn't his concept, but he quotes from "The chimp paradox". It's very popular. I recommend and don't recommend reading it. It's over complex, which is why his summary video of the book is great. But it's great to read for a deeper understanding.

    Delete youtube history in settings, then pause youtube history saving. You will no longer have an algorithm. No FYP, no youtube shorts. Just a search bar for when you really need some info on something

      If you really wanna get off the shorts tab you gotta manipulate your TH-cam, stopping the history saving won't do that. For Android there's revanced in case somebody is interested:)

      To disable short I only use TH-cam from the chrome browser, and I downloaded a free chrome extension that blocks shorts so that when I go on TH-cam I don’t have the shorts icon on the sidebar

    Thank you for this! Been doing a cleanse for more than 2 weeks now, and while I've had a lot lot lot of benefits. I also realized I was slowly self-isolaitng, and those feelings of sadness, loneliness, and depression bubbled up and it confused me! Because I had been so happy and so at peace, no longer using social media apps and persuing my philosophy. Its comforting to know that this dip in dopamine levels is normal, and that it is common to accidentally isolate in this pursuit.

It's scary how even one that was so deeply connected with myself and introspective as I was, can fall for this and be trapped for years...trauma is a heck of a thing. I need to rebuild my sense of self and self esteeme and you are right, I've been doing this for years to block the process of emotions around everything that I lost so suddenly. My biggest concern is that I always get so bored when I attempt this and I fail after awhile...my mind needs to consume new content and information voraciously and I never get past the first week and nowadays I am so deep in my youtube vice that I cannot even get myself to start reading a book without a massive feeling of discomfort and boredom. That's not who I was and not who I want to be. What a huge beast I have before me, but alas, I won't give up and I'll try once again.

    I promise I’m not trying to brag, but I’ve changed a lot in my life before even watching this video. I have built a lot of the positive habits he mentions here and it just feels liberating to know the positive habits I’ve built actually line up with what he says.

    Scrolling itself. Nothing wrong with it. Only when it's out of balance does it become a problem. For some people it is part of research and knowledge but yes when it's substituting connection etc and out of balance then it's an issue and needs addressing. Conscious intentional and aware tech use is what I would like. Before I use tech I need to ask myself, is this nourishing for me in a holistic sense? Is scrolling and consuming media now coming from true curiosity and interest or from habit and escapism? Logging off now!! Enjoy the connection.

    The very nature and pureness of this video is wonderful… so I have a hunch that youtube's will toss it into the back logs of youtube… but at the same time people crave this kind of content (self help-ish). A true anomaly.

    I feel like people with adhd struggle with this the most :[ I’ll be on my phone for hours trying to look up one thing then end up in like 10 different tabs on different topics. It’s exhausting but hard to let go of

    Coincidentally, I have been doing this the past two weeks and now I see this video. This video for me was very much a confirmation of doing the right thing. I have a no-TH-cam policy from when I wake up to when I am doing working for the day. I have truly noticed being more creative, being more focussed at work, picking up books, talking to myself and the feeling of accomplishment has been pure and strong. I am really happy with where things are going for me. I would recommend this approach to everyone. You will grow as a person.

    I thought about this a lot and often talk about it. I have been able to find solitude and having conversations with myself, reading and the works. It’s absolutely amazing, but I still feel lonely. I am a sociable person and I have a good group of friends. The issue lies in the “busy world”, my friends are too busy to hang out, for they prioritize work/school/hobbies over me. Nothing to blame, I respect their hustle. Just an unfortunate truth.

    I'm an 18-year-old going into her last year of highschool this year, Matura exam in may. I've struggled for years, having breakdowns where I just delete all social media but return to the vicious cycle a week later. Today I didn't have a breakdown, but I knew it was close, maybe a couple of days away, so I decided to watch this.     this is a calming video and such a comforting sentiment. i have learned a lot from this. thank you for spreading positivity into the world. i like the ‘this isn’t your fault but it is your responsibility and there’s no judgment’ mindset. i have been feeling inadequate for the longest time, and this video gave me a glimmer of hope that i am enough and worthy of a life lived in depth.

    I did this a few years ago after seeing my screen time be over 7 hours. I picked up astronomy, running and exercising, and I don't ever wish to go back to scrolling.
