I found that TikTok was hurting my mental health due to how addictive it is, and I was wasting so much time scrolling the app, I noticed a huge difference after deleting it

I've been addicted to some kind of high dopamine-releasing thing for the past few months, and it's been over two months without a workday. Even now, I was randomly recommended this while binge-watching videos. Every time I try to pick up my books and study, it doesn't excite me anymore. Earlier this year, I would study for at least 7 hours a day because I liked the rewards I got from every test. But now, I barely study for 15 minutes a day, and my grades are the worst I've ever had. The thing is, I don't feel bad about it. I think my tolerance has gotten so high that I can't enjoy any of the old things I used to love. I've decided to do a 2-week detox after watching this to reset my tolerance and beat boredom to get work done. I'll update you soon!

I did this today. I cleaned my entire house (which was a wreck), did my laundry, washed my bedding and made my bed, took vitamins, went grocery shopping, called my mom, remembered that I hurt a friend of mine and apologized to him, brushed my teeth after every meal, cooked and cleaned up after each meal, worked out, signed up for a new gym, set a meeting with my guidance counselor, went job hunting, made my wife dinner and cleaned up after it when we were done eating. All of this and I don’t feel like I’ve worked at all today. I had no idea how much energy and attention that technology was sucking from my life until today. Words really can’t explain how I feel right now.

I used to draw a lot in my school days even when my schedule was full tight. I easily managed to draw everyday but now when i'm free all day i dont even do the things i really love like drawing, reading, exercising, researching. I realised that i used to draw because of detox dopamine and i'm gonna do it again.
I used to read a book per month, then I bought a smartphone. I just started my own detox program deleting facebook, twitter and Instagram. Interesting that this video popped-up in youtube

I know all this but still can't get myself too do it. I beat myself up for not doing the "Boring stuff" when I am doing high dopamine activities and still won't do the boring stuff which is actually beneficial. WTF is wrong with me😭😭😭

Actually, they aren't. 95% of the world is results driven. There is enough dopamine to continue to motivate to acheive a result. It is in ADHD brains (low dopamine) that it is interest driven. That is why for ADHD brains there is now and not now. It isn't until the day before the paper is due that the dopamine kicks in. Neurotransmitters are not controllable. This whole thing is junk science and harmful and contributes to the stupidity and fake science. Please go read some neurobiology - your conclusions are incorrect.
@@terridactl actually since the invent of social media most people are more instant gratification it is changing us in ways they are only just starting to understand so your statement regarding results driven is incorrect. Also instant gratification is results driven hence the instant dopamine release.
You explained things in a way that didn't simply list what not to do, but the reasons why we react in such ways. I've always seen videos talking about getting more motivation. They would say things like, "Reward yourself with that candy bar AFTER you do the hard thing" but I was irritated and confused because, "I'm an adult, and have the ability to go get that candy bar any time, and there is nobody here to keep me from doing that." I was starting to feel like I was going to have to get someone else to keep me from doing certain things, or it just wouldn't happen. But now I understand. Even one day per week of allowing myself to be bored, even if I don't cut out every single high dopamine activity, is beneficial. For instance, when i quit TikTok, within a few days to a week, I was finally able to sit through hour long tutorials and actually follow along at the same time again. Seeing as with TH-cam, I'm having issues being able to do the tutorials, I need to step away from the things that are stimulating me so much, and go do something else. This video is so valuable. I only wish the people I want to share this with would actually sit through it. Because I thoguht I had ADHD and was experiencing executive dysfunction, but I actually am starting to believe that i simply wrecked my dopamine receptors, and they just need a break so I can get back to business. They say all work, no play is bad, but I have found that all play, no work is not relaxing. I am constantly sitting here with the back of my mind screaming and panicking because no income is coming in, yet I can't tear myself away from the internet to work on what will save my life. It's like being on train tracks and you're not even glued to the tracks or tied or trapped there, you're standing on it and you can't make yourself walk off to save yourself even though the train (every responsibility you have that was supposed to be worked on gradually so it wouldn't be hard) is coming and literally about to hit you. This video perfectly explains how to actually make moderation work in a way that the information actually reached me finally. This is the last video I will ever need to be able to make motivation happen. I don't think anyone knows just how life changing this would be for me, or for others. I couldn't thank you enough.
This reminded me of a poker coach a couple of years ago. He advocated treating the game like a professional if you want it to truly be your source of income. But that one sentence stuck with me. “If you approach poker like an amateur, you’ll end up getting amateur results” That lack of professionalism was abundant in my game at the time. When it comes to mindset and confidence especially, that dearth of focus and an amateur disposition will never lead to real, sustained success. My career changed overnight ever since that day due to this new line of thinking.

Somtimes when i watched movies it felt exactly like you said, and sometimes i'd have to stop, because i focused on their mouths, and saw that the german synchronisation didn't really fit to how their lip movement😂
During my dopamine detox, I woke up on day 4, I was in bed and felt incredibly bored. I grabbed my phone and couldn't do anything on it (I uninstalled social media apps). I was so bored that I grabbed a book and read it. It surprised me, and I enjoyed it, even though I've always hated reading. It's crazy what boredom can do to you.
yeah, my parents used to remove all fun things for a month. In the beginning of the month id be angry and extremely bored. After around about 2 days id start building things like a homemade ballista and making my own language. By the end of the month ill get a option about if i want my stuff back or not.

Even better, throw away your phone, literally!! just put it in your wardrobe or a locker at the start of the day and take it out only when needed
I can testify that this "dopamine detox" really works. As a South Korean citizen I once served in the military some time ago, and back then soldiers were not allowed to carry any personal electronic devices for security reasons. So all I did in my free time were exercising, reading books, and writing daily journals --- pretty much out of boredom just as this video mentioned. Now imagine living that kind of life for ~2 years. I could really feel that my brain was working in a qualitatively different way. Most of all my concentration was significantly increased, such that I could well think about one particular topic for hours which I would write down in a two-paged essay every night. I can definitely say it was the most productive time of my life. To this day I still sometimes refer to the old journals, to ask for ideas and inspiration from my past self. It's kind of sad that in today's world it's nearly impossible to live without digital devices under normal human willpower, and abstain from unnecessary pleasures without outside force. In any case, I have learned one another paradox of life: the more bored you are of yourself, the more interested you become of your world.

That's actually a really good idea (the dopamine detox thing), lately I've gotten so addicted to the dopamine that watching youtube shorts and eating a lot gives me that hard things like studying, cleaning my room, or working out just feel like torture to me, but doing this for just a day a week or maybe even for the weekend, since I don’t really do much anyway, doesn't seem so hard. Wow, this is the first time a video like this has actually given me good advice instead of something so unhelpful like "oh you're unmotivated? Just do it bro, come on", so if this actually helps, thank you, truly.
This was so good. I think we have to be careful with anything ending in “ine”, especially adrenaline. When I was 12, as usual my mother had to hound me about cleaning up my room. One day after I finished a good cleaning, she took the time to bring me into the doorway, turn me around and encouraged me to experience what a good job I had done. She pointed out specific things that were beneficial to me for several reasons, and told me to appreciate the beauty of clean rather than dirty. She turned my motivation into a reward for myself rather than for her. To this day I look forward to standing in the doorway and admiring my clean house, and I’m 74.

FEEDBACK FROM TRYING THIS OUT: Hey everyone, so I watched this video three weeks ago and wanted to share with you my personal advice about dopamine detoxing. First, you don't have to detox everyday. If you attempt to, you might encounter the "Yo-yo effect", which is basically when you get super motivated to get your life together, go super hard at being productive, healthy, etc. But then after a short while, you bounce back to being unproductive, unmotivated, etc. This is because willpower is limited and it's difficult to suddenly alter your whole lifestyle. The cycle repeats, and you bounce between these two extremes. Second, I would recommend detoxing in the morning. Similar to the yo yo effect, you don't have to detox the whole day bc it might be too hard and it could make you not want to detox again. The morning is when you're the most motivated, so try it then. Here's what I've been doing. Every 2 or 3 days, I'll decide "tomorrow, I will detox". That night, I plug in my phone and sort of hide it somewhere (behind a cabinet, under a chair) and set an alarm on my watch. You don't have to hide it, but you need to put it somewhere that you can't just reach for easily. The next day, I am free from my phone until about 3 or 4pm, when I'm done with my work and feel satisfied enough to do some high dopamine activities. Overall, my point is don't overdo it, that might end up working against you. It really is worth trying. You guys all have it in you! I believe in y'all

I am like this, when I get into struggles facing work that's hard for me and try to force myself to focus on that work instead of high dopamine activity, I suddenly get so tired that it's literally painful to stay up. I feel my back hurt from sitting, when I stand up my feet and legs hurt. So that I just have to lay down on my sofa and fall asleep soon after. That's how my brain tricks me into not doing the things I'd have to do. Especially bad when you are stuck in homeoffice because of Corona.
I feel as if I accidentally walked into a doctor's office without saying a word, when he begins explain to me my problem with all its symptoms and then proscribed the right medication. I'm glad I stumbled across this video!!!👍

To summarize: Force yourself to be so bored 1 day/week by abstaining from everything fun, so that work/cleaning/exercising are an attractive alternative to just sitting around not being able to use your phone.

Once I was in my grandma’s house and I didn’t have anything to do, there was no WiFi nor videogames, etc, and 3 or 4 days later I started to look for whatever to do in order to feel less bored, so I decided to learn about physics and chemistry, and I was sooo comforted doing that, it felt so good. Do this “dopamine detox” people, it really works.
When you put it this way, it's really our generation that has it hard. We have to go out of our way so that it's not easy. Entertainment is at our fingertips, and self-discipline has never before been this much in our control.

Sometimes It ruins my whole day, and all I have planned to do is too late. I get very angry at myself then and feel empty cuz my day is over and have actually nothing really done.

To all my fellow addicts out there getting sober: don’t be shocked when you don’t get completely better within a week. Oftentimes our dopamine receptors can take up to a year to fully recover from the hell we’ve been putting it through. Just keep pushing forward and it works if you work it!

Just made 4 months sober a few days ago and I can agree. It’s a slow grind but my friend compared it to working out. He does dopamine detox and always working hard but says instant gratification is the motivation killer. Achieving something you have worked hard for achieves amazing natural dopamine levels. I’ve been trying new things and it does get better. Turns out I really like to draw and studying psychology. Just wish I would’ve found out earlier
I always wondered why I can’t study now even for 30 minutes, since I used to love studying for hours when I was younger. Now I understand. It’s because I have been been addicted and focused on my phone, scrolling from the time I wake up until I go to bed. I think the hardest part is when you need your computer to study/work. I mean, TH-cam is just a tab away, and I need to access the internet for research purposes. This video may help explain why I felt so much more efficient back in school when I could solve everything on pen and paper. I'm very grateful that my phone has a focus mode, where you can block usage and notifications for any distracting app, but even then sometimes I need to search things up on TH-cam and there is always a more intriguing video being recommended 😞
one thing i have tried to be more productive is logging in as guest. yeah the internet is still there but 1000 notifications from all the apps and accounts signed in go away. it helps a little - but apparently not today 😆
@@jjuujjaa Ofc. I used to check my IG, Twitter feeds whenever I wake up for at least 30 min, I stopped that. I stare at the floor, ceiling and then get bored and stand up in 5 min. I used to watch youtube/netflix early in the mornings now I only do it at night before sleeping. I use marinara (pomodoro assistant) chrome extension to study, work on my project. I strictly obey every rule in that app. I sometimes realize myself checking my phone for no reason at all. So I kinda working on it to stop doing this nonsense habit :) Hope that helps.
Great logic and included responsible comments about addiction... a decade of opiates even after 5 yrs sober has forced me to readjust... I walk in somewhat uncomfortable circumstances then cold shower... then I feel happy about simple things again... very humbling
Be aware, the jobs here in America will be shutting down soon. If you are self-employed invest into business interruption insurance. What this does is cover all payments that you have been paid during the event of jobs being closed doing due to virus, earthquake, etc.

Start doing things that previously brought low dopamine, but due to reboot in #1, now bring an increased sense of dopamine and lasting/long-term reward.
i dopamine detoxed unintentionally when a hurricane hit my country and left us without electricity. i kept a NOTEBOOK of tweets and gained a lot of muscle from exercising out of boredom. it also made me and most of my friends better at school when we were back😭
It’s actually crazy to think that people at one point had no television, phones, games, internet, junk food, porn, drugs, alcohol, etc. Their dopamine came from eating and actual sex and wasn’t flooded with excessive (and likely unhealthy) levels of it. We’ve invented all these things as a species which flood the brain with dopamine not actually realizing we’re frying our brains and missing out on the true pleasures of life. For me personally, when I do a dopamine detox, I sleep fucking fabulous and feel insanely calm. Almost like I’m tapping in to my true self without all the distractions. It’s hard to be upset or anxious when you’re not frying your brain with news, games, social media drama, etc. it’s just you and your thoughts and some meditation and exercise. Don’t get me wrong, it ain’t easy. But it’s rewarding.
This is why our levels of anxiety and depression are waaaay higher than ever. I try to tell my friends technology, social media, video games, porn and weed/alc every day causes this shit, and they laugh at me lol

Video start at 7:30 And I did Dopamine detox with yoga and walk for a week. First day for hard. Second was harder. Third day was trying to kill me with boredom. Fourth day was good. Fifth day was life changing. I got rid of my addiction. And was studying 2 hrs a day continuously. That may not seem much to some people but I couldn't cross 20 minutes limit. But here is the worst con. If you start being again with phone, tv, computer etc. You will lose all the gains. So once you detox and are ok without those things, never look back to them.
@Subhasis Nandi I was feeling good in one week. And I actually tried this 2-3 months ago, came back here few days before. Now till date I never take phone for more than total of one hour a day, divided in 5 minutes every hour.
Yes, that's correct. My struggle is with the reward system. If I reward myself with 5 minutes social media, next thing I know is, I am watching YT/FB for hours. Any suggestions on how to overcome that or new reward that I can use and are not related to TV, phone or PC?

It reduce Dopamine release upto 35% And you have to stay away from your phone as much as you can. Stay alert, remind yourself that it's waste of time and type of addiction. Save it to watch later if it's something really important or interesting.

I was a meth addict for 2 decades. What you are talking about is the exact thing I did to recover. I am now 3 years sober. But I, or my will, can't take all the credit. Motivation and deep understanding from my wife gave me the strength to finish what I have started. I guess you can say that seeing my wife proud gives me a rush of dopamine.
It's interesting how not everybody feels stimulated by the same things, though. You mentioned practicing the piano as a low dopamine activity. To me, practicing the piano is literally the best part of my day.
it’s an activity that normally wouldn’t produce dopamine for some, but if it’s productive and already producing dopamine then you’ve just achieved an optimal habit :)
This is actually super interesting. I've been dealing with anxiety and depression for a while. I ended up going on a dopamine detox without realizing. A storm made my house lose power, internet, etc, for like ~10 days. Because of this, I wasn't able to use the computer at all. No games, porn, had to limit my phone's internet usage heavily. I already had a semi consistent study and workout routine, but during this blackout I went on more walks, started valuing my free time more, and working out became more fun for some reason. When I got my power back, I felt better overall. Can't really explain it, but small things make me feel happier. Although I still feel anxious and depressed at times, I'm overall a happier person because of some event I couldn't even control. Damn bro

It's like ticking a box, maybe. The brain also processes information presented in colour more rapidly than in monochrome, possibly because we don't live in a monochrome world. Bright colours are also associated with cleanliness and ripe food.
Essentially you give yourself an ultimatim. Either do the boring work, or do nothing. If your brain doesn't want to work, just sit around doing absolutely nothing until you get so bored that doing boring work is more fun than doing nothing. Either that or doing boring work, with the promise of eventually moving onto something fun, is more fun than doing nothing.
I haven't done any kind of physical fitness activity for like 8 years. Last week I was so unbelievably bored and saw the weather was nice so I randomly just got up out of bed and said I'm going hiking today. It was so bizarre

I’ve fallen into a deep hole of procrastination for my schoolwork in college. I’m on the verge of failing this semester so I’m in desperate need of motivation. I’ll be going on a dopamine detox today and tomorrow, and I will be updating this post a few times per week to update you all on my situation.
Some advice I wish someone would've given me. When you get urges, embrace them. Don't try to distract yourself from them, I found it only made things worse. I think because trying to distract myself stressed me out which in turn made my brain seek comforting things and that usually meant dopamine activities. I tried to instead embrace my urges it works so much better. Here's an example so you know what I mean. lets say you're on a detox period and you get a strong urge to check your instagram, or see how many likes your youtube comment got. Instead of trying to not think about it, just take a deep breath, calm yourself down, and FULLY FEEL that urge. Feel how it's affecting your mind and your body, get to KNOW it. Remind yourself that it's just that, an urge. You will realize that it doesn't have as much power over you as you think it does. Within a few seconds, you will see it fading away like it was never there at all. Whether you have to do this a lot or a little depends on how much you were affected by dopamine. In the beginning, you might have to do it over and over again many times, but with time it will get easier and easier. Then one day it will become the norm. If it starts to feel like a loosing battle, then get up and do something physical like working out. It may be a sign of some pent up energy that you need to release. Good luck, you can f*cking do this!
What helpful advice. It reminds me of being mindful of what you're feeling rather than giving into it and letting it take control over you. Then redirecting it into something that'll actually be good for you in the long run.
There was an Indian guru, forget his name, who predicted suicide would rise because people have access to so much stimulation, that they'll get bored of life and find less pleasure from it. Sounds crazy but I relate, I often feel bored of life.
The key is find your passion for example I like being an entrepreneur and focus on growing my business its fun because of the risk i also excersice and what motivates me is that I know that I'm living today like others wont so I can live tomorrow like others cant

Can't explain how much this helps to know - back when I was in school and afterwards university, I used to be extremely productive and creative. When I say I used to write stories every single day I mean 100% - it was my biggest reward for all my hard work in studying, I was absolutely addicted. I graduated university two years ago, and I've been idling trying to build an art portfolio and figure out my life. But all the free time I thought would lead to more creativity... has been the complete opposite. The more time goes by, the less I create. This year I've literally only made half the amount of art I made last year - and writing? Forget about it. Barely wrote anything this year. It doesn't give me the same joy as it used to. I think it is because I spend so much of my time being brainless on the internet, watching fun TH-cam videos to relax instead of actually activating my own imagination. It's gotten so bad that even playing video games that I used to be obsessed with, doesn't make me feel happy and I don't get hooked on them. Even hyperfixations I normally get on shows and such that interest me, isn't happening anymore. This year I've just felt like a passionless meh. I think I need a good dopamine reset 😅

if you're not finding enjoyment from video games or shows either, it's probably not (only) a "dopamine" problem. this year has been really rough for everyone and many people have started experiencing symptoms of depression, such as not being interested in their usual hobbies anymore. while it's really good to reflect and try to understand why your habits have changed, also remember to be kind to yourself - I think it will help in trying to re-kindle your passions

Two weeks ago I started exercising everyday and for some reason, I also started feeling a strong need to stop eating junk food, watching youtube videos no end, and switching from one video game to another...turns out I just became aware of my own body and once again was able to listen to it. I went from someone who could read a 300 page book in half a day to a fucking dopamine addict who can’t even read a paragraph without getting the urge to do something “more fun”. First, I thought I was depressed because nothing was fun or enjoyable anymore, so I went to see a psychiatrist. Nothing, I was a bit down, but nothing seem out of the ordinary and I had no reason to feel like that anyways. But then it hit me: this all got a lot worse when I bought my new laptop. It began as a strong need to alternate between playing LoL, Black Desert, Celeste, and other personal favorites, but it eventually scalated to feeling overwhelmed all the time and a total inability to focus on literally anything...not even what made me addicted in the first place. So yeah, if you’re experiencing brain fog, ADHD-like symptoms, sudden bursts of anxiety/anger, or feeling pretty anhedonic in general, you should seriously consider doing this, it’s painful af when you first start but it’s life changing.
I get dopamine hits from self-help video's. It feels like "YES I'VE LEARNED SOMETHING NEW!' or get a 'motivation-dopamine' hit form it. While in fact I didn't done anything with it. Most of the time its just a repeat of something I've seen in a previous video explained in a different way. Without action and implementing of what you just learned, it's just another dopamine hit like social media, gaming or pornography. Self-help w/o action is just another dopamine-hit.
I realized that ive started to always scroll down the comments section while the video is still playing. It's my brain searching for more dopamine than the video on its own can provide

I've been addicted to some kind of high dopamine-releasing thing for the past few months, and it's been over two months without a workday. Even now, I was randomly recommended this while binge-watching videos. Every time I try to pick up my books and study, it doesn't excite me anymore. Earlier this year, I would study for at least 7 hours a day because I liked the rewards I got from every test. But now, I barely study for 15 minutes a day, and my grades are the worst I've ever had. The thing is, I don't feel bad about it. I think my tolerance has gotten so high that I can't enjoy any of the old things I used to love. I've decided to do a 2-week detox after watching this to reset my tolerance and beat boredom to get work done. I'll update you soon!

I did this today. I cleaned my entire house (which was a wreck), did my laundry, washed my bedding and made my bed, took vitamins, went grocery shopping, called my mom, remembered that I hurt a friend of mine and apologized to him, brushed my teeth after every meal, cooked and cleaned up after each meal, worked out, signed up for a new gym, set a meeting with my guidance counselor, went job hunting, made my wife dinner and cleaned up after it when we were done eating. All of this and I don’t feel like I’ve worked at all today. I had no idea how much energy and attention that technology was sucking from my life until today. Words really can’t explain how I feel right now.

Actually, they aren't. 95% of the world is results driven. There is enough dopamine to continue to motivate to acheive a result. It is in ADHD brains (low dopamine) that it is interest driven. That is why for ADHD brains there is now and not now. It isn't until the day before the paper is due that the dopamine kicks in. Neurotransmitters are not controllable. @@terridactl actually since the invent of social media most people are more instant gratification it is changing us in ways they are only just starting to understand so your statement regarding results driven is incorrect. Also instant gratification is results driven hence the instant dopamine release.
You explained things in a way that didn't simply list what not to do, but the reasons why we react in such ways.
I've always seen videos talking about getting more motivation. They would say things like, "Reward yourself with that candy bar AFTER you do the hard thing" but I was irritated and confused because, "I'm an adult, and have the ability to go get that candy bar any time, and there is nobody here to keep me from doing that." I was starting to feel like I was going to have to get someone else to keep me from doing certain things, or it just wouldn't happen. But now I understand.
Even one day per week of allowing myself to be bored, even if I don't cut out every single high dopamine activity, is beneficial. For instance, when i quit TikTok, within a few days to a week, I was finally able to sit through hour long tutorials and actually follow along at the same time again. Seeing as with TH-cam, I'm having issues being able to do the tutorials, I need to step away from the things that are stimulating me so much, and go do something else.
This video is so valuable. I only wish the people I want to share this with would actually sit through it. Because I thoguht I had ADHD and was experiencing executive dysfunction, but I actually am starting to believe that i simply wrecked my dopamine receptors, and they just need a break so I can get back to business.
They say all work, no play is bad, but I have found that all play, no work is not relaxing. I am constantly sitting here with the back of my mind screaming and panicking because no income is coming in, yet I can't tear myself away from the internet to work on what will save my life. It's like being on train tracks and you're not even glued to the tracks or tied or trapped there, you're standing on it and you can't make yourself walk off to save yourself even though the train (every responsibility you have that was supposed to be worked on gradually so it wouldn't be hard) is coming and literally about to hit you.
This video perfectly explains how to actually make moderation work in a way that the information actually reached me finally. This is the last video I will ever need to be able to make motivation happen. I don't think anyone knows just how life changing this would be for me, or for others. I couldn't thank you enough.

This reminded me of a poker coach a couple of years ago. He advocated treating the game like a professional if you want it to truly be your source of income. But that one sentence stuck with me. “If you approach poker like an amateur, you’ll end up getting amateur results”
That lack of professionalism was abundant in my game at the time. When it comes to mindset and confidence especially, that dearth of focus and an amateur disposition will never lead to real, sustained success. My career changed overnight ever since that day due to this new line of thinking.

During my dopamine detox, I woke up on day 4, I was in bed and felt incredibly bored. I grabbed my phone and couldn't do anything on it (I uninstalled social media apps). I was so bored that I grabbed a book and read it. It surprised me, and I enjoyed it, even though I've always hated reading.

yeah, my parents used to remove all fun things for a month. In the beginning of the month id be angry and extremely bored. I can testify that this "dopamine detox" really works. As a South Korean citizen I once served in the military some time ago, and back then soldiers were not allowed to carry any personal electronic devices for security reasons. So all I did in my free time were exercising, reading books, and writing daily journals --- pretty much out of boredom just as this video mentioned. Now imagine living that kind of life for ~2 years. I could really feel that my brain was working in a qualitatively different way. Most of all my concentration was significantly increased, such that I could well think about one particular topic for hours which I would write down in a two-paged essay every night.
I can definitely say it was the most productive time of my life. To this day I still sometimes refer to the old journals, to ask for ideas and inspiration from my past self. It's kind of sad that in today's world it's nearly impossible to live without digital devices under normal human willpower, and abstain from unnecessary pleasures without outside force. In any case, I have learned one another paradox of life: the more bored you are of yourself, the more interested you become of your world.

That's actually a really good idea (the dopamine detox thing), lately I've gotten so addicted to the dopamine that watching youtube shorts and eating a lot gives me that hard things like studying, cleaning my room, or working out just feel like torture to me, but doing this for just a day a week or maybe even for the weekend, since I don’t really do much anyway, doesn't seem so hard. Wow, this is the first time a video like this has actually given me good advice instead of something so unhelpful like "oh you're unmotivated? Just do it bro, come on", so if this actually helps, thank you, truly.

When I was 12, as usual my mother had to hound me about cleaning up my room. One day after I finished a good cleaning, she took the time to bring me into the doorway, turn me around and encouraged me to experience what a good job I had done. She pointed out specific things that were beneficial to me for several reasons, and told me to appreciate the beauty of clean rather than dirty. She turned my motivation into a reward for myself rather than for her. To this day I look forward to standing in the doorway and admiring my clean house, and I’m 74.

Hey everyone, so I watched this video three weeks ago and wanted to share with you my personal advice about dopamine detoxing.
First, you don't have to detox everyday. If you attempt to, you might encounter the "Yo-yo effect", which is basically when you get super motivated to get your life together, go super hard at being productive, healthy, etc. But then after a short while, you bounce back to being unproductive, unmotivated, etc. This is because willpower is limited and it's difficult to suddenly alter your whole lifestyle. The cycle repeats, and you bounce between these two extremes.
Second, I would recommend detoxing in the morning. Similar to the yo yo effect, you don't have to detox the whole day bc it might be too hard and it could make you not want to detox again. The morning is when you're the most motivated, so try it then.
Here's what I've been doing. Every 2 or 3 days, I'll decide "tomorrow, I will detox". That night, I plug in my phone and sort of hide it somewhere (behind a cabinet, under a chair) and set an alarm on my watch. You don't have to hide it, but you need to put it somewhere that you can't just reach for easily. The next day, I am free from my phone until about 3 or 4pm, when I'm done with my work and feel satisfied enough to do some high dopamine activities.
Overall, my point is don't overdo it, that might end up working against you. It really is worth trying. You guys all have it in you! I believe in y'all

I am like this, when I get into struggles facing work that's hard for me and try to force myself to focus on that work instead of high dopamine activity, I suddenly get so tired that it's literally painful to stay up. I feel my back hurt from sitting, when I stand up my feet and legs hurt. So that I just have to lay down on my sofa and fall asleep soon after.
That's how my brain tricks me into not doing the things I'd have to do.
Especially bad when you are stuck in homeoffice because of Corona.

To all my fellow addicts out there getting sober: don’t be shocked when you don’t get completely better within a week. Oftentimes our dopamine receptors can take up to a year to fully recover from the hell we’ve been putting it through. Just keep pushing forward and it works if you work it!

Just made 4 months sober a few days ago and I can agree. It’s a slow grind but my friend compared it to working out. He does dopamine detox and always working hard but says instant gratification is the motivation killer. Achieving something you have worked hard for achieves amazing natural dopamine levels. I’ve been trying new things and it does get better. Turns out I really like to draw and studying psychology. Just wish I would’ve found out earlier

I think the hardest part is when you need your computer to study/work. I mean, TH-cam is just a tab away, and I need to access the internet for research purposes. This video may help explain why I felt so much more efficient back in school when I could solve everything on pen and paper. one thing i have tried to be more productive is logging in as guest. yeah the internet is still there but 1000 notifications from all the apps and accounts signed in go away. it helps a little - but apparently not today 😆

@@jjuujjaa Ofc. I used to check my IG, Twitter feeds whenever I wake up for at least 30 min, I stopped that. I stare at the floor, ceiling and then get bored and stand up in 5 min. I used to watch youtube/netflix early in the mornings now I only do it at night before sleeping. I use marinara (pomodoro assistant) chrome extension to study, work on my project. I strictly obey every rule in that app. I sometimes realize myself checking my phone for no reason at all. So I kinda working on it to stop doing this nonsense habit :) Hope that helps.

1. Stop doing things that bring high dopamine, but temporary reward. Abstain completely, to reboot sensitivity to dopamine.
2. Start doing things that previously brought low dopamine, but due to reboot in #1,
now bring an increased sense of dopamine and lasting/long-term reward.
i dopamine detoxed unintentionally when a hurricane hit my country and left us without electricity. i kept a NOTEBOOK of tweets and gained a lot of muscle from exercising out of boredom. it also made me and most of my friends better at school when we were back😭

It’s actually crazy to think that people at one point had no television, phones, games, internet, junk food, porn, drugs, alcohol, etc. Their dopamine came from eating and actual sex and wasn’t flooded with excessive (and likely unhealthy) levels of it.
We’ve invented all these things as a species which flood the brain with dopamine not actually realizing we’re frying our brains and missing out on the true pleasures of life.
For me personally, when I do a dopamine detox, I sleep fucking fabulous and feel insanely calm. Almost like I’m tapping in to my true self without all the distractions. It’s hard to be upset or anxious when you’re not frying your brain with news, games, social media drama, etc. it’s just you and your thoughts and some meditation and exercise. Don’t get me wrong, it ain’t easy. But it’s rewarding.
This is why our levels of anxiety and depression are waaaay higher than ever. I try to tell my friends technology, social media, video games, porn and weed/alc every day causes this shit, and they laugh at me lol

First time is a while that a comment made me guffaw.
The concept of Hidden Time Wealth blew my mind. It’s like finding a cheat code for productivity and defeating procrastination.

And I did Dopamine detox with yoga and walk for a week.
First day for hard.
Second was harder.
Third day was trying to kill me with boredom.
Fourth day was good.
Fifth day was life changing.
I got rid of my addiction. And was studying 2 hrs a day continuously.
That may not seem much to some people but I couldn't cross 20 minutes limit.
But here is the worst con. If you start being again with phone, tv, computer etc. You will lose all the gains. So once you detox and are ok without those things, never look back to them.

Yes, that's correct. My struggle is with the reward system. If I reward myself with 5 minutes social media, next thing I know is, I am watching YT/FB for hours. Any suggestions on how to overcome that or new reward that I can use and are not related to TV, phone or PC?

It reduce Dopamine release upto 35% And you have to stay away from your phone as much as you can. Stay alert, remind yourself that it's waste of time and type of addiction. Save it to watch later if it's something really important or interesting.

I was a meth addict for 2 decades. What you are talking about is the exact thing I did to recover. I am now 3 years sober. But I, or my will, can't take all the credit. Motivation and deep understanding from my wife gave me the strength to finish what I have started. I guess you can say that seeing my wife proud gives me a rush of dopamine.

This is actually super interesting. I've been dealing with anxiety and depression for a while. I ended up going on a dopamine detox without realizing. A storm made my house lose power, internet, etc, for like ~10 days. Because of this, I wasn't able to use the computer at all. No games, porn, had to limit my phone's internet usage heavily. I already had a semi consistent study and workout routine, but during this blackout I went on more walks, started valuing my free time more, and working out became more fun for some reason. When I got my power back, I felt better overall. Can't really explain it, but small things make me feel happier. Although I still feel anxious and depressed at times, I'm overall a happier person because of some event I couldn't even control. Damn bro
comfort and complacency are the killers of motivation. if you always feel comfortable because of internet, junk food, and masturbation, you have no desire to do things that improve your health and self-worth. take away the comfort and you’re forced to find something else to latch on to, usually things that are naturally healthier.

It's like ticking a box, maybe. The brain also processes information presented in colour more rapidly than in monochrome, possibly because we don't live in a monochrome world. Bright colours are also associated with cleanliness and ripe food.

Last week I was so unbelievably bored and saw the weather was nice so I randomly just got up out of bed and said I'm going hiking today.

It's hard to do absolutely nothing when you have a brain capable of thinking, visualizing and coming up with interesting new ideas for stories you've been cooking up. I find it so hard to just switch off all thought.

I’ve fallen into a deep hole of procrastination for my schoolwork in college. I’m on the verge of failing this semester so I’m in desperate need of motivation. Some advice I wish someone would've given me. When you get urges, embrace them. Don't try to distract yourself from them, I found it only made things worse. I think because trying to distract myself stressed me out which in turn made my brain seek comforting things and that usually meant dopamine activities. I tried to instead embrace my urges it works so much better.
Here's an example so you know what I mean. lets say you're on a detox period and you get a strong urge to check your instagram, or see how many likes your youtube comment got. Instead of trying to not think about it, just take a deep breath, calm yourself down, and FULLY FEEL that urge. Feel how it's affecting your mind and your body, get to KNOW it. Remind yourself that it's just that, an urge. You will realize that it doesn't have as much power over you as you think it does. Within a few seconds, you will see it fading away like it was never there at all.
Whether you have to do this a lot or a little depends on how much you were affected by dopamine. In the beginning, you might have to do it over and over again many times, but with time it will get easier and easier. Then one day it will become the norm. If it starts to feel like a loosing battle, then get up and do something physical like working out. It may be a sign of some pent up energy that you need to release. Good luck, you can f*cking do this!

What helpful advice. It reminds me of being mindful of what you're feeling rather than giving into it and letting it take control over you. Then redirecting it into something that'll actually be good for you in the long run.
There was an Indian guru, forget his name, who predicted suicide would rise because people have access to so much stimulation, that they'll get bored of life and find less pleasure from it. Sounds crazy but I relate, I often feel bored of life.
The key is find your passion for example I like being an entrepreneur and focus on growing my business its fun because of the risk i also excersice and what motivates me is that I know that I'm living today like others wont so I can live tomorrow like others cant

The word guru has come from the word "gu" which meams darkness and "ru "which means light. Can't explain how much this helps to know - back when I was in school and afterwards university, I used to be extremely productive and creative. When I say I used to write stories every single day I mean 100% - it was my biggest reward for all my hard work in studying, I was absolutely addicted.
I graduated university two years ago, and I've been idling trying to build an art portfolio and figure out my life. But all the free time I thought would lead to more creativity... has been the complete opposite. The more time goes by, the less I create. This year I've literally only made half the amount of art I made last year - and writing? Forget about it. Barely wrote anything this year. It doesn't give me the same joy as it used to.
I think it is because I spend so much of my time being brainless on the internet, watching fun TH-cam videos to relax instead of actually activating my own imagination.
It's gotten so bad that even playing video games that I used to be obsessed with, doesn't make me feel happy and I don't get hooked on them. Even hyperfixations I normally get on shows and such that interest me, isn't happening anymore.
This year I've just felt like a passionless meh.
I think I need a good dopamine reset 😅

Ive also been kinda meh this year, when i got introduced to the loop station i wrote a new song every day infact one of my most popular song (amongst family) was an improvisation and my best songs came from that era about a yr ago, now i struggle to touch on creativity, whenever i pick up my guitar i play all the songs i already know and its kinda getting boring. if you're not finding enjoyment from video games or shows either, it's probably not (only) a "dopamine" problem. this year has been really rough for everyone and many people have started experiencing symptoms of depression, such as not being interested in their usual hobbies anymore. while it's really good to reflect and try to understand why your habits have changed, also remember to be kind to yourself - I think it will help in trying to re-kindle your passions

The whole point of the dopamine detox is to feel alive. Cause thats actually the hard thing to do for a lot of people. But believe me, once you disconnect from the fast pleasure and connect to yourself again and become conscious of the things that really matters, there’s no going back to not wanting to feel alive! Its a process, that can help dealing with depression too. You can see it from a spiritual perspective also :). I’ve had depression years ago and its so good to live a conscious live, hope everyone reading these a nice mental health, peace and happiness!

@@vanshika3851 start with taking a silent walks & listen to the thoughts that come through your head & just acknowledge them. This is a training form of meditation. Once you're comfortable with that, just sit in one spot& listen to your thoughts. Listen to your body etc.

Two weeks ago I started exercising everyday and for some reason, I also started feeling a strong need to stop eating junk food, watching youtube videos no end, and switching from one video game to another...turns out I just became aware of my own body and once again was able to listen to it. I went from someone who could read a 300 page book in half a day to a fucking dopamine addict who can’t even read a paragraph without getting the urge to do something “more fun”.
First, I thought I was depressed because nothing was fun or enjoyable anymore, so I went to see a psychiatrist. Nothing, I was a bit down, but nothing seem out of the ordinary and I had no reason to feel like that anyways. But then it hit me: this all got a lot worse when I bought my new laptop. It began as a strong need to alternate between playing LoL, Black Desert, Celeste, and other personal favorites, but it eventually scalated to feeling overwhelmed all the time and a total inability to focus on literally anything...not even what made me addicted in the first place.
So yeah, if you’re experiencing brain fog, ADHD-like symptoms, sudden bursts of anxiety/anger, or feeling pretty anhedonic in general, you should seriously consider doing this, it’s painful af when you first start but it’s life changing.

I get dopamine hits from self-help video's. It feels like "YES I'VE LEARNED SOMETHING NEW!' or get a 'motivation-dopamine' hit form it. While in fact I didn't done anything with it. Most of the time its just a repeat of something I've seen in a previous video explained in a different way. Without action and implementing of what you just learned, it's just another dopamine hit like social media, gaming or pornography.
Self-help w/o action is just another dopamine-hit.
