I know this was out of left field, but yes Know Your Moves is back and I'm excited to be working on it again. I'll be uploading an update video in the coming day just to sort of explain why I decided now and what the rest of the channel will look like going forward . I was going to do an Alax Direct but figured you'd rather see the video sooner. So yeah, look forward to that!
So I know a common point is "Mario is the Ryu of Smash Bros". He's got the uppercut, the fireball, the spinny movement move - same three specials every shoto's supposed to have. But what I really love about Mario is how he's a Ryu designed specifically around Smash Bros. His fireball travels around the same speed as the hadoken rather than as fast as his games, but it still obeys gravity, thus giving it a better interaction with platforms. His Super Jump Punch is made primarily to recover, but still works as that out of guard/wake up option that a shoryu would. The way that Mario moves around platforms and extends his combo game with them - vertically, specifically - fits him. He's the platforming guy. You gonna mess with him on platforms? What are you, nuts? As much as Mario is an introduction to Smash, I also find him an adaptation of both fighting games into Smash and Mario platforming into Smash. And that's a LOT to juggle, super elegantly, with just 64 as a base! As simple as it is, I feel like Mario is one of the most intelligently designed characters in how he interacts with the game of Smash Bros. But you right fludd is still butts.
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could change the way fludd behaves? Maybe with like Mario’s taunts or something? Like up taunt gives you rocket nozzle to shoot you upwards at a very high distance if fully charged, down taunt gives you hover nozzle as a way to get back on the stage and maybe gimp opponents, and side taunt gives you that dash nozzle that lets you basically do banjo-kazooie side special when fully charged. And then shield + b could give you the regular nozzle again. I think that’d make fludd a super cool part of Mario’s kit.
I think the existance of fludd kinda faults a design that is otherwise perfect for what it needs to do. I still kinda liked it better when mario tornado was his down special.
@@malik1422 well if it was the case that it behaved like that, each use of fludd would need to be fully charged to get the best benefit right? I feel like that’d balance it out
"This could possibly be the best day ever and the forecast said that tomorrow will likely be a million six times better, so make every minute count jump up jump in and cease the day and let's make sure that in every single possible way, today is gonna be a great day!"
Nooooo! Mario man already had video gaming games before Smash Siblings! You have the characteristics of an uninformed and inconsiderate humanoid person!
I’m really surprised Ryu wasn’t mentioned even once. Everything you said about Mario being the ancestor of every other character in Smash applies to Ryu in fighting games as well. Plus the fact that both characters usually tend to be the average baseline for the cast, be a Jack of all trades but master of none, and even both having a fireball, uppercut, and a horizontal moving spin move.
my theory is that the OG Smash64 Mario was designed as a clone to Ryu. Up special is a simplified shoryuken, down special is a simplified tatsumaki, and neutral special is a simplified hadoken.
That does make sense. Since Mario is the foundation for the fighting style of the entire game, giving him a few moves similar to already established fighting games would 'soften the blow' per se.
@@wanderingmarshadow I thought being a shoto required having 1) heavy and light inputs 2) specials that require more than one d-pad input and 3) normals that cancel into specials.
The "F" in F-Zero is same as F1 racing, it's just "formula". The "Zero" is supposed to signify it's faster than F1, and the cars also hover, so zero-gravity.
Personally, I see Mario as the Ryu of smash bros. He's meant to be the character who teaches a new player how smash works at a basic level. And Dr. Mario is meant to be the evil Ryu and/or Akuma of the game, as in he hits harder, has some different properties to his moves, some different moves when it comes to 3ds onward, but is a glass cannon when it comes to health, since he falls faster because of his weight clas and has a harder time getting back to the stage than both Mario and Luigi after getting knocked off stage in the many ways smash works when it comes to health. Also, Luigi is Ken, who has some similar moves, is faster, has a handful of original moves and more explosive power in said moves when used properly, but is easily knocked out when it comes to weight in the case of smash, but is also compensated for said weight class with a way better recovery for when he is knocked off stage versus both Mario versions. All in all, they are the triangle from which people can expand to trying out other characters of smash with original Mario as the starting point.
Great write up, but I would argue Luigi and Dr. Mario always being characters you need to unlock preclude them from being part of the "Intro Smash characters" group, the other character that I would say is the best counterpart to Mario in this regard is Kirby. Kirby plays completely different from Mario, but his origin also being a Platformer lends to him a basic familiarity with the sort of movements required in Smash. His focus being on great recovery (without needing to rely on specific button and joystick toggles which can easily trip up very young or very new players while in the heat of the fighting) and speedy attacks lends him a very approachable fighting style that many newbies often end up relying on for their first few hours playing any of the games in the series. Kirby also has the newbie favored advantage of being quite possibly the most approachable fighter in the entire series in terms of visual design. While Mario has far superior name recognition, most people who boot up the game that happen to take note of Kirby's round, pink frame will always feel comfortable with him no matter how familiar they may be with videogames as a whole. In essence, Mario is the character that people who are versed in gaming but not Smash Bros can easily get behind and get pretty decent at using him thanks to his solid and evenly measured moveset and internals, whereas Kirby is a character that most people in general no matter wants or experiences can feel comfortable with using and potentially even excel with thanks to his great recovery, fast strikes and gimmicky specials.
They also both have a fireball, tatsu, and DP, in 64 at least. And seeing as Sakurai has always been a fan of fighting games, I’m sure that was intentional.

I know the f smash doesn’t have an actual origin considering the fire is in melee, but I like to believe that it’s supposed to be the Fire Brand from Superstar Saga (even tho the game came out after the fact)
glad to see this series return, was always nice learning some of the origins of character portrayals in smash. to be completely honest there was a lot of stuff i didn't know about mario in this like the up throw and the apparent controversy of the down air/B, also didn't even notice the fact that F.L.U.D.D actually speaks when you use his modern down B
In 14:03, i just realized that the reflective property of mario's cape might just be referencing the part in the Super Mario Adventures comic where Peach confronts the koopalings and she used Mario's cape to steer off Roy Koopa before she got headrammed.
I think Mario being able to use fire moves without the fire flower may be an accidental reference to Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga where that was a thing, like Mario was just literally a firebender.
11:26 Probably isn’t a reference but it’s my headcanon that’s it’s Firebrand from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and ability that allows Mario to basically be a weak Firebender.
i don’t really think there’s anything wrong with his moveset. it’s really practical and reflects the character throughout his major appearances. HOWEVER, i’d be down for mario variations like 64 mario or tennis mario or odyssey mario or sunshine mario. variations that reflect mario in that particular part of his history.
I’d be down for that. Although I will say 65 Mario is kinda just regular Mario (though that’d be a great skin), and if they wanted someone for sports game, I can imagine someone else…… wah.🙃
I think they could change animations for his moves but still keep them the same in functionality, imagine his up tilt as a little hop, down air being the mario galaxy spin, or nair as the kick from mario 64 full on
The fireball move is actually also a reference to the og Mario Bros., same as Luigi's fireball. The fireball speed and behavior are very close to the random fireball hazards in that game.
For the "So long, gay Bowser", in the original Japanese release, he doesn't say it and in the updated version called the Shindou version years later, instead of that voice clip they use "Bye bye" because Bowser's Japanese's name is Koopa. Plus the Shindou version has a rumble feature patched the back long jump glitch. Also, maybe do Daisy and Chrom in one video since you did the fighters that were based on years ago?
Might be a little late to the party, but I’m glad you brought back the series. Here is a little fun fact, Mario’s Forward Smash is based off his fire ability in the Mario and Luigi series, it made its first appearance in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga for the GBA. Where he gains the ability of Pyrokinesis, while Luigi gets the power of Thor. One of Mario specials in the game is where he charges up his hand with and shoots an explosive blast of fire from his palm, like in smash. If he fails he burns himself and does little damage, if he succeeds he does a lot of damage and doesn’t hurt himself, is only difference in the move set from smash.
It honestly surprises me how people forget Mario had "Fire" as a special attack in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. I like to think that's where one or two fire moves get their inspiration from, despite Luigi not having any "Thunder" attacks.
Ayy, I’m glad the series is back again! It’s also a good call that you moved the costumes to the end and just showed as what the references are with images. I felt that’s all they needed.
11:25 The explosion thingy is a reference to the first title of the Mario and Luigi series, Superstar Saga, Where Mario has the ability to summon fire from his hand in a controlled fireball. Luigi had something similar except it was lightening.
7:01 speaking of breakdance, doesn't his modern pose look straight out of the DDR Mario Mix boxart? Also, 22:24 That's just a color alt in Melee, is it not?
@RHORSO Ok so youtube is being a knobjockey and keeps autodeleting my reply because it has a google images link in it Look up "Melee Dr Mario costumes/colors" or something like that. It's on-disc in melee. I should know, I own it and have played it since childhood
Mario's final smash is a reference to Mario RPG. His strongest fire attack is his final smash. Now his forward smash is a Superstar Saga reference from my guess but it may have originally been a Mario RPG or just Fire Flower reference. The Kraft Single is not anything I can defend But I will say if there was a p meter like super Mario bros 3 That cape should have totally given you another jump every time you used it until the meter ran out.
Mario is designed to be an easy to learn character like in his games, so his moveset in Smash reflects this. Since Mario is the most famous video game character ever, people who pick up Smash for the first time are mostly likely going to pick him first. Plus, he does have several references to many of his moves in his series.
19:52 I get that this was probably just a joke. However, in case you didn't know, the F stands for Formula, like Formula-1 Racing, which is what modern NASCAR is referred to as. :]
Awesome to see this back! Oh and Just something I’ve always thought: the reason it was decided to be an uppercut instead of like the 50 other way Mario flies, other than it being a jump because jump man, is probably just to be a SF reference. I mean look at Yoshis Akuma pose; smash just liked to do that back when it being in the game didn’t seem likely. 🙂
Most people don't realize his Smash idle pose is a reference to the first SMB1 where he has the same pose: Head looking to the right being perfectly perpendicular to his body which faces the front were he's perfectly simetry. Also with slightly bended knees. He's just more energetic in Smash.
(7:20) It would have been amazing if Mario said "so long [character name]!" with his throw. At least when it's a confirmed KO. Would mean a lot of recordings, including saying the names in all the languages (since I don't think he's dubbed), but it would still be amazing.
From watching the first episode of Know Your Moves, I remember immediately searching for a Mario episode and not finding one. All these years, I have been CRAVING an episode trying to explain the significance of Mario's seemingly bland moveset and, at last, this video comes out!! YES! The analysis in this video really hits the nail on the head with him!
After replaying Kirby Super Star for the NES for the first time in like 20+ years, I also figured that Sakurai took _a lot_ of things about Smash from Super Star. Stuff like shielding on the triggers, the spherical shield from Mirror Kirby, dash grabs, dash attacks, down tilts, aerial specials that sometimes can get angled, stuff like Fighter and Sword seemed instrumental for Smash’s eventual release imho.
I saw a redesign of Mario’s smash move-set on tumblr like having the Side Special be a Shell Kick, Down Air be a stomp, Dash Attack be the dive and the long jump, etc. You know I think a better Final Smash could be a double reference. Basically a cinematic final smash that has Mario capture a T-Rex and knock the opponent into a warp cannon from NSMB.
The fire blast from the hand is from superstar saga. It was an attack and overworld move called "firebrand" you basically create an explosion in your hand
Fun fact! His F Smash could reference the Firebrand from Mario and Luigi or vise versa. In M+L, both bros get elemental attacks. Mario can throw fireballs or make a large fireball form in front of him while Luigi gets lightning powers, able to shoot lightning bolts, lightning bombs, and make a large spark
Man, how dope would it be if Mario got the DLC treatment and had a down-b where you got to select one of his many power-ups over the years. Or, if we want to make it “fun,” he pulls out a question block and a random one pops out. It could be like Monado arts except cooler...
You know, I had this exact same thought. They could choose some of his most iconic power-ups. You could even save an extra power-ups like in other Mario games as well. Maybe even keep default Mario as smash Mario.
Dr Mario's sheet is the sheet they put on dead bodies. Since it reflects or 'reverses' attacks, he lifts the sheet up rather than laying it down on a body LOL
Okay so I play competitive and I have to say FLUDD is one of the reasons Mario is high tier. It’s absurd. You can interrupt people trying to rush you, you can stop recoveries, you can anti air with it
I am so excited for this series to come back. As long as you enjoy making them and they're as high quality as this, I can't wait to see you do it all again!! Also nice Ace Attorney music during the ad :)
Im So Happy to see more Know Your Moves! This is the series that first brought me to this amazing channel, and I can't be more excited to see them back in all of their glory!
His FSmash animation might be a reference/inspiration from his special move in Superstar Saga. Though both are very much inspired by the Fire Flower anyways so yea
i always thought mario's f-smash was similar to his fire ability in mario and luigi superstar saga. I know its impossible that smash took it from that game, but ive always comparesd the two
19:49 Forgot F-Zero 2 on the Super Famicom Satteleview, Tetris & Dr. Mario on the SNES, Dr. Mario & Puzzle League, and Nintendo Puzzle Collection on Gamecube
I still feel that if they make another Smash game, they should cut down the roster and make the veterans have brand new movesets. But also, each of them would have an Echo that would play like they used to. In this case, Mario would have a new move set, and Dr. Mario would play like old Mario.
7:39 i dont know either but HOLY SHIT ITS BACK. well done. i know you were burned out with it all those years ago but way to come back and create a sequel worthy of the name.. oh, and they used the sound effect there for mario vs donkey kong so at least the backthrow went on to do something
Someone may have already caught this, but F-smash is most likely in reference to Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga where Mario gains the "Fire" power-up and his sprite while using it in the overworld is similar to it's representation in smash
Although I know his fireball move was most likely based on the fire flower. I always just thought his fire-based moves was a reference to when he learned pyrokinesis in Mario and Luigi superstar sage.
I'm glad your talking about the design philosophy of these characters instead of randomly slapping references and calling it a day, like I've seen many fans do. While Mario could be better, the whole point is that he's easy to pick up. He's most likely the first one to be picked up by general audiences since he is the most recognizable video game character.
I think the forward smash is references to mario and luigi super star saga were one the moves mario got had him making a fireball like the one in his forward smash

@@ajshiro3957 He designed the be the "Shoto" of smash.
To be fair, Fludd and squirtle neutral b is actually really useful. It is great for gimping characters with poor recoveries and stage control.
A bit odd two completely different characters would be in the same video, but I would like to see Daisy and Chrom.
The throw sound ( 7:39 ) is the exact same as Mario's triple jump scream in Mario vs Donkey Kong on GameBoy Advance.
It honestly surprises me how people forget Mario had "Fire" as a special attack in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. I like to think that's where one or two fire moves get their inspiration from, despite Luigi not having any "Thunder" attacks.
Except Superstar Saga came out 2 years after Melee so it's just a random bullshit attack.
God, I wish they'd replace FLUDD with a Cappy throw.
Being able to do that thowcap>jump>divetocap>bounceoffcap maneuver in Smash would be RAD!
@RHORSO Ok so youtube is being a knobjockey and keeps autodeleting my reply because it has a google images link in it
Look up "Melee Dr Mario costumes/colors" or something like that.
The Kraft Single is not anything I can defend
But I will say
if there was a p meter like super Mario bros 3
That cape should have totally given you another jump every time you used it until the meter ran out.
Mario is designed to be an easy to learn character like in his games, so his moveset in Smash reflects this. Since Mario is the most famous video game character ever, people who pick up Smash for the first time are mostly likely going to pick him first. Plus, he does have several references to many of his moves in his series.
Exactly!
7:39 the YEE HAW is from mario vs donkey kong on the gameboy advanced. its used in his flip animation in the game
Be Aware of the Repertoire of Maneuvers and Techniques in Your Posession: Analysis of Mario Mario, mascot of the Japanese company Nintendo
Mario's VA is the same across the world. Charles Martinet
The cape also turns opponents the other direction so you can put them in free fall if you do it at the right time
From watching the first episode of Know Your Moves, I remember immediately searching for a Mario episode and not finding one. All these years, I have been CRAVING an episode trying to explain the significance of Mario's seemingly bland moveset and, at last, this video comes out!! YES!
The analysis in this video really hits the nail on the head with him!
Bland, move set, do you see competitive Mario? His combo game is extremely annoying, how is that bland??
Basically a cinematic final smash that has Mario capture a T-Rex and knock the opponent into a warp cannon from NSMB.
that moveset on tumbler was actually really good
The fire blast from the hand is from superstar saga. It was an attack and overworld move called "firebrand" you basically create an explosion in your hand
A God needs not change his moveset when one's moveset is perfection.
Thank you Alax. I didn’t think I’d ever see this series again and I’m so thankful for it to be back.

I like how you quickly go through the alternate costumes/colors on the ending screen. It's nice :)
Nice dude, I'm so glad you're back, stay hydrated 😃
That's honestly a cute way of pretty much keeping the same framework as Mario's Cape but also referencing medical doctors.
Okay so I play competitive and I have to say
FLUDD is one of the reasons Mario is high tier. It’s absurd. You can interrupt people trying to rush you, you can stop recoveries, you can anti air with it
15:11 why does kazuya look like he’s protecting mythra lmao
to me it looks like he’s grabbing her chest
This is the first time watch Alax since 2017 and it’s impressive how much his editing and style has improved.
I wanna make a campaign to get Luigi his lighting powers back, he deserves it

I am so excited for this series to come back. As long as you enjoy making them and they're as high quality as this, I can't wait to see you do it all again!! Also nice Ace Attorney music during the ad :)

I wonder how everyone would react if Mario’s move set was changed to reflect his more recent games?
I would be happy, even though I'm so used to his current one
"Fuck this gimmicky bullshit I hate this game"
Alot of veterans would hat this
I think it would be cool if they did that but maintained the classic one for Dr. Mario, if not then i'd prefer just keeping the current one.
Im So Happy to see more Know Your Moves! This is the series that first brought me to this amazing channel, and I can't be more excited to see them back in all of their glory!
Keep Up The Great Work Alax!
I cannot believe Mario doesn't have any of his moves from Super Mario Bros 3 the game with the most power ups and unique abilities
I'm SO glad that this series is back. Keep doing you Alax.
Know Your Moves is back? AND we’re back with Mario, the man himself? Perfection.
His FSmash animation might be a reference/inspiration from his special move in Superstar Saga. Though both are very much inspired by the Fire Flower anyways so yea
Actually Mario’s Fluud is actually pretty useful in Ultimate. It can really mess up your opponents position.
Thank you I was searching for this comment.
and the many clones would be the guy's who are similar to other guy's with different clothing
7:40 I fêlé like this trow sound is from Mario vs DonkeyKong… it did touch a chord in the nostalgic part of my brain :3
i always thought mario's f-smash was similar to his fire ability in mario and luigi superstar saga. I know its impossible that smash took it from that game, but ive always comparesd the two
The "Fire Blast" from his side smash is from Mario and Luigi RPG when he gets the Fire Gloves
If Smash movesets were people, Mario's moveset would be the guy that goes to a club or restaurant, and order regular tap water.
And then destroys you with his water gun
the clones would be twins

8:40 fun fact of the video, the song sayo-nara from ddlc plays, which is... Ominously creepy for someone who played it.
Fun fact: nintendo started out as a card manufacturing company
The loading bar during the ad at the beginning is underrated. It's a great idea and more videos should have it
3:00 False. The gameplay of Super Smash Bros. is based on Kirby, not Mario.
Hadn’t watched your videos in a long time and this came to me in a bad time right now and boy did I miss it. Thanks for the great videos!
Perhaps to keep things consistent.
13:48 I love his bored posture and tone
15:01 I like her too 🥰
19:49 Forgot F-Zero 2 on the Super Famicom Satteleview, Tetris & Dr.
Ima have to say no thx my favourite guys are newcomers and ultimate was my first and only smash game
That's like the worst possible idea for a sequel.
I actually really like the fludd, its really funny to use on people who are in freefall above the stage
11:21 I imagine it's taken from Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario had a close range fireball move, Luigi had an electric one.
I love that Know your moves is back, it’s the thing that first got me into the channel!
8:44 oh man this music brings back... Memories
7:39 i dont know either but HOLY SHIT ITS BACK. well done. i know you were burned out with it all those years ago but way to come back and create a sequel worthy of the name.. oh, and they used the sound effect there for mario vs donkey kong so at least the backthrow went on to do something
10:59 "sonic pose" as a fan of both...
I love that
“A surprise to be sure but a welcome one.”
It’s great to see Know your Moves back, I’m down for any Alax content as long as you enjoy making it!
The credit explaining the origin of the costume is much simpler and snappier. I like it :)
10:53 I once played Brawl with my cousins and used this taunt, it scared them so much they fell off the stage to stay away from me.
