I highly doubt Sunshine of all games would be the end of the timeline. Mario and Peach clearly never met Bowser Jr. before in that game as Peach asked "So you're Bowser's son?" and he'd become a recurring antagonist in later games where Mario and Co. are more familiar with him.

    • @justinc.5591

And at the end of the game Junior says “someday I want to fight that Mario again!” which wouldn’t make sense if he’d already fought Mario a dozen times before.

Mario games happen in release date order unless stated otherwise, that's how I view it, and is the one that makes more sense in a timeline
Edit: also when was it stated that Bowser was created by kamek? Bowser is just a child that was abandoned and has no parents, so kamek, which already had an army, and we could say a kingdom, took care of Bowser, and Bowser because of jealousy ordered kamek to kidnap all the babies, and kamek doing whatever Bowser wants did that, leading us to the start of the mario series Super Mario World 2, Yoshi's island (which has sequels like Yoshi's island ds, were it introduced the star children, which are Mario, Luigi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Wario and I think Bowser but I'm not sure)

@@mariotheundyingThere was missed opportunity to actually talk about Waluigi in a non-joke manner. Maybe his reason for working for the Star villain of Mario Party 3 (and stars are pivotal in this universe, him and the dark star from BIS seem to indicate a lot more isn't shown in the games) was because of him learning about the so-called star children and wanting to take them down a peg. This is how he meets Wario (not a blood brother) and learns there's another person just like him.

yeah, maybe near the middle before he started being a regular boss but quite a while after all the rest had been at it. Could still have been the start of the races and sport events though, as fighting could be in a competition too.

This is wonderful and covers way more ground than I expected going in. A few random notes:
    - Mario & Luigi visit Pop Star at some point, as they're seen in the audience of the King Dedede fight in the Spring Breeze subgame of Kirby Super Star, and they along with Birdo and Toad appear in the audience for the Megaton Punch mini-game in the same game.
    - The Beanbean Kingdom should be on the same continent as the Mushroom Kingdom, as the game depicts Stardust Fields as a borderland region between the Beanbean and Mushroom Kingdoms.
    - Even excluding the connections to Konami properties through Bomberman, there are connections to Earth through depictions in Mario's Time Machine and Mario is Missing.
    - The Koopas repeatedly seek the power of the stars in the games (Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, etc.), and in Super Mario World we learn there are multiple entrances to an otherwise-unreachable place called the Star World scattered across Dinosaur Land. Perhaps this explains the Magikoopas' sustained interest in that region -- is their magic related to the stars?

    • @zekeram129
      @zekeram129 ปีที่แล้ว +36

Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine likely follow the same canon as the 90s Mario movie because of their use of the actual Earth. It's likely that Bowser was out for revenge after the movie and decided to attack Mario on his home turf.

    - This is an interesting interpretation of Mario Lore. I especially like the idea of Magikoopa dark magic being used to power up Bowser and the other head honchos. I always imagined them just being naturally gifted mutants kinda like Freeza and his top minions in Dragon Ball.
    - I know most people interpret the sports and kart games taking place at the end due to Bowser being on more amiable terms. But I always interpreted it as more of a temporary truce. We see in the games that the Mario Kart races are big events with tons of sponsors and ads for in-universe products plastered throughout the race tracks. I imagine Bowser and other antagonistic characters are willing to be team players for the sake of revenue as these events would be a great way to make money. (I imagine Bowser is compensated handsomely for allowing one of his castles to be converted into a race track)
    - There actually is a niche part of the fandom dedicated to talking about this kind of thing. There’s a whole subreddit called Marioverse which is moderated by Tumblr user Sean D.Walsh who made an impressive timeline on his blog that I’d recommend checking out.

While I don't think it's all one universe with Kirby/Zelda/etc, I do think that the multiple universes are linked through Kirby. Kirby literally lives in Dream Land, and the Fountain of Dreams is said to be the source of all good dreams. I think Kirby's universe is a base dream world that connects all of the Nintendo properties, and is the place people go when they sleep. It's how Wart was able to go from Mario's dream (in Super Mario USA) to the Wind Fish's dream (Link's Awakening).
Kirby is also chock full of references to other series. The entirety of Great Cave Offensive, for example. You also mentioned Samus in Dream Land 3, but the game also features Professor Hector, who created ROB, and other non-Smash fighter cameos (Chao and Goku). Amazing Mirror also shows that Kirby's universe is connected to Master and Crazy Hands, as they're literally bosses in that game.

I would also like to add that the possibility of a connection between Mario and the Pikmin series. Peach’s crown and a mushroom with growth enhancement capabilities are both treasures in Pikmin 2, and Pikmin themselves have been present since Toadstool Tour and have been seen more frequently since Nintendo World. It’s not impossible to suggest that the post-apocalyptic world Pikmin takes place on was formerly Mario’s world before Wario incited a nuclear arms race, with Pikmin being the only survivors of the old world by downsizing to adapt to the new harsh biosphere.

Don't forget that when Lost World came out, it had a special Skyward Sword crossover, and given how Skyward Sword is basically ground Zero of the Zelda franchise, it would further tie the connections between Zelda and Mario. It is notable to also bring up the movie Wreck-it Ralph, and argue Smash Bros occurs in the Central Hub, which includes the Internet, The Emojis from the Emoji Movie and our real world. Effectively, the technology tech tree in itself has a life of its own there can be dimensional travel. With this connection in mind, we can now connect it to the Super Mario Bros Super Show, where Mario retires and goes to our dimension, specifically Brooklyn, becoming a humble plumber who keeps loosing his license, but is relied upon when threats emerge. This meta connection being crossed over, also explains Sonic's antics in the human world, with Eggman being Elon Musk if he was an actual genius, becoming a human villain in the tech world (thank you Sonic Movie and Wreck it Ralph), enough to cause the events of Sonic Adventure- onwards. What really interests me, is that in Sonic Adventure 2 (and re confirmed in the Sonic Movie), the United States government learns about Eggman and his grandfather, making the ultimate life form based on aliens he's found. Hilariously, humans end up teaching our own dimension's aliens about the power of our video games and the larger technology metaverse, and using that knowledge to make recreations of Arcade video game characters by corrupting video game beings and having them invade Earth in the mid-80s where Adam Sandler and the President of the United States together beat the aliens.
TL;DR the Adam Sandler extended universe is canon to the mario franchise.

Metroid being canon to the Mario Universe would also make Pikmin canon seeing as Pikmin 1 references Space pirates which are the main antagonists of some Metroid games. But that raises it’s own questions with Pikmin having split timelines and a post apocalyptic depiction of earth, which Kirby also has Multiple of, and Kirby lore is it’s own can of worms; Also Hatsune Miku was on Super Mario Maker. Is Hatsune Miku Canon to Mario? Are Vocaloids Canon to Mario? Is The Internet Canon to Mario? Should I touch Grass?

Space pirates is just a generic term, used for pirates in space, and Metroid was just incredibly uncreative with naming its main enemy force. As such, I don't think there's a connection there. Otherwise, we might need to pull in other so-called-space pirates mentioned in other properties such as Doctor Who.
If you want to bring Pikmin in, there's already Mario references in the Pikmin games, although it's more likely that Mario existed as a game franchise in the Pikmin universe than as an actual history.

Super mario maker is more like an in-universe game. We see multiple characters like Bowser JR, Kamek, and bowser's levels in SMM2's story mode, and the game makes reference to mario paint, another in-universe program (perhaps its an evolution of that and WWDIY's machine). Personally, I think Odyssey is the last game where Mario and Bowser fight. After he’s stranded on the moon, Bowser has a while to think. How much time has he wasted chasing this impossible dream of getting Peach to marry him? After he eventually makes it back, he goes through a midlife crisis of sorts, buying himself a theme park and terrorizing other non-Mushroom kingdoms (3D World and Wonder). But after a while, this gets boring, and so he eventually stops and becomes friends with the Mario cast, hence Mario Kart, Party, the sports games, etc.

    • @Eris1987
      @Eris1987 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Games like Super Mario Run take place after Super Mario Odyssey.
Also, even if he gives up on trying to marry Peach. He would probably just revert back to his old plan of simply conquering the Mushroom Kingdom.
He has terrorized and tried to conquer other places as well.
Dinosaur Land(Yeah I know it's technically part of the Mushroom Kingdom but you know what I mean.), Jewelry Land, and what is now known as Bowser Country.
The Sprixie Kingdom might be under Peach's rule.
Also, the Super Mario bros. Wonder takes place before Super Mario Run.
Games likes Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 take place before Super Mario Sunshine.
Super Mario Odyssey references the modern karting sponsors and Mario Kart as a whole.
In Paper Mario 64 Luigi's Diary says the following. _"I remember the carefree days when we played Golf and Tennis and had Parties."_
Luigi's Kart shows up in the Origami King. But it also happens to show up in Color Splash as well.
Also, in Color Splash Bowser says _"MARIO?! What are YOU doing here/ Do we have a kart race scheduled for today?"_
Yes the paper games are canon.
Also, Bowser does actively do villainous things in Party games like try to take over dreams and steal all the mini stars.

A few things across the spin-offs + notes that I feel should've been included:
-Although Sunshine ties up Bowser's relationship with Peach, I believe that Bowser either has a mutual agreement to continue conflicting with the Mario Bros. or is simply focused on taking over the Kingdoms and/or winning over the Bros. There are multiple games with post-Sunshine elements where Bowser still fights against the Bros, even in the sports games. Or maybe he just likes a bit of chaos every now and then.
-The Fawful conflict. Fawful is a re-occuring character across the RPG's who's plans are seen being brought to fruition as early as Superstar Saga as seen in Bowser's Minions. This conflict may possibly be post-Sunshine considering that Bowser is the one taking the Bros. to the Beanbean Kingdom. This also opens up...
-3RD CONTACT: The Shroobs, Dark Star, Geno, and the Smithy Gang(?). Due to shenanigans with a time travel machine (more on that later), E.Gadd accidentally brings down an alien race known as the Shroobs. After this whole conflict, Fawful gains access to the Dark Star, an evil artifact held away by the Star Sprites of the Mushroom Kingdom. The Dark Star's home and its motives/relations are unknown.
Geno is a character sent from the Star Road, which is presumably related to Rainbow Road and the secret worlds of SMW, SM3DL and SM3DW. He helps Mario in repairing Star Road against the Smithy Gang, a massive army commanded by none other than Smithy himself. These characters are from another dimension of unknown origin, hailing from Exor, of which they use as a method of travelling between the dimensions.
-TIME TRAVEL. Due to the whole Shroob conflict, a rip in space and time forms, which allows the baby and older versions of the Mario characters to be in one place, together. This could potentially be how the events of Mario's Time Machine happens, as well as how the Mario Kart games, and Yoshi's Island DS have paradoxical things such as baby characters existing in the wrong places and ages.
-Smash Bros. Although Smash Bros could be seen as fiction, there is one character that appears and co-exists amongst the characters... the Metals. I believe the Metals to be a some kind of symbiotic race like Venom, as Metal Mario his variants are seen as both as power-ups and of nemesis to Mario.
-2D Plane. As seen in Paper Mario, Odyssey, and SMRPG, some entities in the Mario universe like specifically on a 2D space. Culex specifically talks about this in SMRPG, and is shown to still be a sprite in the 3D remake. Odyssey also has sections where Mario is able to become a 2D entity for platforming, and Paper Mario is, well, living paper. This means that the entirety of Paper Mario is a dimension of its own seperate of The 2D as shown by Paper Jam.
-More about Dreams. The events of Dream Team suggest that dreams do have a seperate world as shown by Antasma's schemes. Dreams can also be brought into the real world, which would explain Dreamy Bowser, and why themes from Subcon are able to appear in the real world.

If there's one part of the Mario universe that's always interested me and is almost never talked about, it's that one weird unnamed city/island from Mario Kart 8. Y'know, the one under N64 Rainbow Road with all the pretty lights and whatnot? What really gets me about that place is that it:
    - Is where Toad Harbour is located, as both this track and N64RR have the Peach parody of the Statue visible in the background
    - Is where Super Bell Subway is also located, as there are maps of the island located around the track, some detailing names of other tracks in the game
    - Has giant bridges sticking out of it on multiple sides, spanning far out into the ocean
All implying that this place is largely used as a communal area where people are able to travel to the different tracks and locations across the series in-universe. And yet, this place isn't even part of the Mushroom Kingdom, judging by how it's mostly just isolated in the middle of the ocean in the middle of nowhere.
I kinda wish someone analysed this a little more, or even if Nintendo mentioned it sometime, because 9 years later it's still one heck of a mystery.

This is a lore detail so important that they made it a whole part of the movie for Pete’s sake!
And really, things like Mario refereeing for the WVBA (where all of the fighters are listed to be from Earth locales) make a whole lot more sense if we treat the Mario universe as being an interconnected set of ‘realms’, where one realm is a parallel Earth, another has the various Kingdoms we see in mainline and spin-off Mario titles alike (everything from the Beanbean kingdom to the Flower kingdom to Sarasaland to eeeeeeverything in Odyssey and more), another is the realm of Dreams that link and Mario both visit, which would lead to another one probably being Hyrule’s world (especially given that the Zelda series has its own self contained cosmology and pantheon that otherwise treat the world as an isolated reality), and you could go on. There’s also the factor of there being different planets in one selfsame universe that you mentioned, but I think that what planets are part of which greater realm is kind of iffy.
And yeah you can say that using a sort of ‘multiverse’ approach is lazy, but especially given that a number of games seem to address isekai themes very directly it’s hard to simply scrub it aside, not to mention this is not just ‘a bunch of disconnected realities with a few interlopers’ but instead ‘closely linked parallel worlds whose inhabitants gradually become more and more integrated as they become aware of each other’.
Great video all the same though!

I think this is the best answer. Mario's universe definitely has some sort of inter-universal transport. I do think the extraterrestrial connections like star fox, Kirby, Metroid, and f-zero are canon, but beyond that I think they're out of universe. Mario and Luigi are definitely from Brooklyn.

While the linear timeline of events in this video isn’t exactly correct, there is a linear timeline of events that does make sense.
The block thing is canon, but the manual NEVER says Mario and Luigi came from another world through a Warp Pipe. That’s a common misconception.
None of these other series (Punch-Out!!, Zelda) are canon to Mario. It’d be best if they were just left out. The universe of Mario on its own is rich enough to fill 100 videos.

@@seandwalsh3 I mean, I was just considering how best to marry the mario we see in the arcade games with the mario we see in everything from the NES onward, speaking of the NES it would be ideal to cast Punch Out aside were it not for the fact that Mario is... y'know, in it as a rather prominent cameo role, and reconciling real world locations with the geography of this other planet is most easily handled by saying "oh yeah they both exist interdependently of one another". In theory I could just set aside Punch Out anyway, but between that and retroactively declaring that every big city scene we've ever seen has been in Metro Kingdom and nowhere else, I'd rather treat New Donk as a cultural blending of Earth and this other world that happened as a result of parties from both sides becoming increasingly involved with each other.
This can also easily canonize stuff like Mario Kart Tour's tracks, where real world locales have been given a (temporary or not) whimsical coat of paint by all these visitors from the other world intermingling more and more with an Earth that's looking less and less mundane.
And really, in all honesty, I just really like this concept of these two worlds harmlessly blending and exchanging with one another anyway

    Hi Backseat Sakurai,
Interesting video. I will say however that there are quite a lot of errors that I would like to address. I’m gonna write a response here. I’ll timestamp each point I’m responding to.
    [0:40]
Actually, every canon Mario game, that is every non-crossover title published by Nintendo, perfectly fits into one coherent, consistent picture with ease. There is an intentional, extensive and well-thought-out lore to these games which goes largely overlooked.
    [3:00]
This is the first major mistake of the video. Neither Banjo nor Conker are part of the Mario Universe, or each others’ universes, despite their appearances in Diddy Kong Racing.
Gregg Mayles, designer on Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest and Donkey Kong 64, as well as the Director of Banjo-Kazooie, stated:
“Does [Donkey Kong Country] and [Banjo-Kazooie] take place in the same world? Easy answer this. No. In my head, each game existed in its own world, but characters could travel between worlds to feature in each others games.”
When asked if the Conker and Banjo series take place in the same universe, Chris Seavor, Director and Designer of Conker’s Bad Fur Day said:
    “No.”
Of course, regardless, Banjo and Conker’s connections to the Mario and Donkey Kong World have been completely severed since. Diddy Kong Racing received a remake on the Nintendo DS, aptly titled Diddy Kong Racing DS, in which Banjo and Conker were outright removed from the game’s cast of characters and replaced with the much more appropriate Dixie along and Tiny Kong.
Furthermore, the Brothers Bear were redesigned in the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double-Trouble and clearly no longer resemble Banjo.
The Isle O’Hags and Conker should be removed from the map.
    [3:40]
The Donkey Kong Country games take place simultaneously with/between the main series Mario games. Kongs age faster than humans, which is why Cranky Kong is older.
    [4:24]
This is the second major mistake. Wario has nothing to do with Sarasaland. He is not from there. Wario is from Diamond City, which is its own kingdom, with its own ruler. He may have also lived in the Mushroom Kingdom when he was young, and of course has his own island and castle in the Wario Land games - but none of these locations are in or have any relation to Sarasaland.
    [4:45]
Sarasaland is an empire made up for 4 Kingdoms - the Birabuto Kingdom, the Easton Kingdom, the Muda Kingdom and the Chai Kingdom. Only the Birabuto Kingdom has a desert, so your assertion that Sarasaland is “mostly covered in desert terrain” is completely incorrect.
While yes, Sarasaland does have humans, there are also several other races such as Goombos, Tokotokos, Gaos, Koopas, Yurarins, etc.
    [4:57]
Sarasaland is never shown to have any particular wealth or treasure - all of the images of treasure, creatures and technology you show during this clip are from the Diamond City region or the Mushroom Kingdom, both of which are on the Mushroom Continent - not Sarasaland.
    [5:09]
Sarasaland is not a Kingdom; As mentioned previously it’s made up of four distinct Kingdoms. Daisy also does not have any economic issues.
Wario does not fall into a “life of crime” due to social or economic hardship - Wario just loves treasure, and begins treasure hunting when he fails to steal Mario’s Castle in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Wario also doesn’t usually commit any crimes - he takes treasure from collapsed civilisations and usually ends up helping people along the way, whether intentionally or otherwise. This is seen time and time again in his games.
Wario obtains no reputation or power in Sarasaland. His castle was constructed by a genie using the treasure he collected during Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (and later rebuilt with his personal funds after Toad destroyed it in Wario’s Woods). While Wario did gain notoriety in Diamond City and the Mushroom Kingdom, again neither of these locations are in Sarasaland.
    [5:48]
Captain Syrup was actually the first person Wario “butted heads” with on his very first treasure hunting adventure, when trying to get enough cash to build his castle, not someone he encountered after becoming an infamous treasure hunter. Captain Syrup has never plundered Sarasaland as far as we’re aware.
    [6:00]
Diamond City is where Wario grew up. He hasn’t invested in it, he just lives there.
New Donk City is the complete opposite side of the planet and Wario has nothing to do with it.
I would also like to take this opportunity to ask what sort of map you’re using. In Super Mario Odyssey we see the entire globe of Mario’s Planet, yet it appears you haven’t used that at all in this video, which of course leads to several geographical errors.
    [6:45]
Punch-Out!! isn’t canon. Mario cameoing in the game doesn’t mean anything for the Mario Universe. You also seem to imply here that “Mario Paint” and “Dr. Mario” are “odd-jobs” from when the brothers were in New Donk City, but this isn’t the case. Both titles are set after Mario has already gone on adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom.
    From the Dr. Mario manual:
“Hi everybody! I'm Mario. How's it going? Over the last few years, I've been involved in some pretty wild adventures. Now, believe it or not, I work in the virus research lab at the Mushroom Kingdom Hospital. Today I'm about to begin my research as usual.”
    [7:05]
Cranky Kong was not resentful of industry, as the Kremling Krew’s invasions of the island did not come until the time of his grandson in the Donkey Kong Country games a couple of years later. The reason Cranky Kong kidnaps Pauline in Donkey Kong was to “prank” Mario, according to Shigeru Miyamoto. Donkey Kong (I) was Mario’s pet. Mario also laughed at his performance in Donkey Kong Circus, which was likely how they met in the first place.
It’s probably Cranky Kong was kidnapped by humans from his jungle home and forced to perform in the city until he was bought by Mario and eventually escaped.
    [7:40]
Of course, Wario would not be threatened or jealous by Mario’s fame in Sarasaland because neither Mario nor Wario live there.
    [8:24]
Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman! is of course non-canon, by nature of being a crossover title. Wario is also crossing dimensions in that game regardless, not contacting alien life. From the game’s manual:
“Wario, in his constant search for new lands to conquer and treasures to gain, has found the extra-dimensional portal that links his world with the one that Bomberman inhabits. Thinking that the Madbombers will make a nice addition to his legions of mindless minions (as well as a new source of funds for his nefarious schemes), Wario steps through the gate... and soon finds that the Madbombers are not quite the dim witted flunkies he originally thought them to be!”
This clearly shows that even if this title was canon “Planet Bomber”, as you called it, is not in the same dimension as Mario’s Earth.

    • @seandwalsh3
      @seandwalsh3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      [8:50]
Wario is not the one who supplies the Koopa Troop with “Bombs, Bullets, Clown Cars and Airships”. We see that the Koopa Troop already makes heavy use of Bob-ombs, Bullet Bills and Clown Cars in the Yoshi’s Island games and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, when Wario is still a baby, and the Airships are said to be the Koopa Kingdom’s own inventions in several games.
Wario also isn’t much of an arms dealer to begin with, so this wouldn’t make sense regardless. Wario is a mostly harmless entrepreneur.
      [9:10]
Of course, since Bomberman isn’t canon, neither are any of these other connections.
      [10:52]
If anything, humans probably originated in Sarasaland or location of modern day Metro Kingdom and colonised the Mushroom Kingdom in the last few thousand years, seeing as we’ve seen ancient Mushroom Kingdom ruins that seem to depict Toads as having ruled the kingdom in the past.
      [11:08]
Super Mushrooms do not enlarge people or increase their strength, they merely heal people return people to their original heights if they’ve been reduced to their Small Form.
      [11:12]
1-Up Mushrooms do not resurrect the dead, they merely wake up and heal someone who has been knocked unconscious.
      [11:30]
There are not 8 worlds within the Mushroom Kingdom. Princess Peach is its sole ruler, and the seven kings you mention are actually the rulers of the Mushroom World. The Mushroom World is a series of seven Kingdoms bordering but separate from the Mushroom Kingdom: Grass Land, Desert Land, Water Land, Giant Land, Iced Land Sky Land and Pipe Land.
      [11:42]
The Koopa Kingdom actually lies northeast of the Mushroom Kingdom. The Koopa Kingdom also has a variety of environments, such as deserts, grasslands, forests and cities.
      [12:00]
The Koopas have likely been practicing magic for thousands of years. Their power also has no relation at all to the Power-Ups of the Mushroom Kingdom. Again, the Super Mushroom merely heals people while the 1-Up Mushroom merely heals and wakes those who are unconscious. Koopa Magic has never been shown to raise the dead regardless though, as Dry Bowser is not dead Bowser but rather a product of Bowser taking Skeletone Formula:D as we see in Bowser Jr.’s Journey.
      [12:26]
Bowser is clearly not a creation of the Magikoopas. He is a member of the Koopa species and the current ruling member of the Royal Koopa line. His ancestors have been mentioned in several games, and we have seen dozens of other members of his species across the games.
Bowser is far from a puppet, and we have seen that even the Magikoopas are completely subservient to him and have been since he was a baby, as the orphaned inheritor to the throne.
      [12:35]
Bowser was not raised to want to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom or take Peach as his queen. He’s merely had the dream of conquering the universe since he was a baby and started with the Mushroom Kingdom as the Koopa Kingdom’s neighbour. He kidnapped Peach initially as she could undo the spell he put on the Mushroom People. It wasn’t until much later, after several kidnappings for different reasons, that he began to fall in love with her.
      [12:50]
The Kings and Bosses were not created by the Magikoopas. They already existed and joined Bowser’s side. We see Petey Piranha in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time before he became loyal to Bowser, and when Bowser was still a baby.
      [13:10]
They’re not there because they are kings of completely separate Kingdoms.
      [13:30]
This is incorrect. The blocks are a thing that exist already in the world. Bowser just also turned some Mushroom People into them.
Here’s a comparison: If a witch turns you into a frog, you are not the only frog to exist. The witch did not create all frogs, she just turned you into a different thing that already exists in the world. The same applies to Mushroom People and Brick Blocks.
Every Mushroom Person that was transformed into Blocks and Horsetail Plants was returned to their original form when Princess Peach was saved at the end of the game.
      [14:48]
Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally a Mario game and is counted as a Mario game by Nintendo. It was developed as a Mario game, before being retooled into Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic for the Yume Kōjō ‘87 festival in Japan. This was because Nintendo made a deal with Fuji TV, resulting in them needing a game to promote the festival starring its mascot characters.
When bringing the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (known now as the Lost Levels) to the US, the playtesters thought the game was unfair and too similar to the first game to be successful, so the Mario team in Japan took Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and converted it back into a Mario game for an international release.
They even released this version in Japan, though since they already had a Super Mario Bros. 2 they renamed it “Super Mario USA”. To Japanese gamers, and to Nintendo’s developers, it’s just as much a part of the Mario library as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. This is why it is referenced so heavily.
      [15:10]
This title is not a series of post-traumatic flashbacks. Wart and his army are real beings who invaded the Dream World of Subcon. The Dream World is established as a real, physical dimension that can be accessed through the dreams of normal people. This is explicit in the game and its sequels.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is obviously not canon to Mario. The Legend of Zelda is a completely unrelated universe. Sometimes characters are used and/or shared between these universes, but those are entirely separate, unrelated versions of the characters who are merely shared by the developers as nods or cameos.

    • @seandwalsh3
      @seandwalsh3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      [16:33]
Tatanga invaded Sarasaland of his own accord. Wario had no involvement with Tatanga’s plan. Tatanga merely wanted to rule Sarasaland himself and make Daisy his Queen.
Wario does use Mario being distracted by saving Sarasaland as a way to take over his castle in Mario Land (not in the Mushroom Kingdom), but this was merely lucky happenstance for Wario.
Mario & Wario also isn’t that barebones. In fact Wario has a whole period antagonising Mario, seen in the Mario’s Picross games, Mario & Wario, Dr. Mario 64, etc.
      [17:15]
Technology already existed on the planet. Wario/Tatanga did not start a technological revolution. Space travel was already quite common. The Wario Car and Wario Bike were created by Dr. Crygor, and card and bikes already existed all over the planet for many, many years.
Sim City (SNES) is not canon.
      [17:36]
The villains are not friendly in Mario Kart. The Mario Kart games explicitly happen between the adventures like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, etc. Bowser is just as much of a villain as he is in any other game.
Fox McCloud, Kirby and Stunt Race FX are all non-canon to Mario. Cameos in non-Mario games do not have any influence on the lore of the Mario Universe.
Metroid is not canon either. Again, Samus’ and Link’s appearance in Super Mario RPG are merely cameos, and they are clearly not the Samus and Link from the Metroid or Legend of Zelda games.
Kirby’s Avalanche isn’t even canon to Kirby, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine isn’t canon to Sonic, Sonic isn’t canon to Puyo Puyo which isn’t canon to Kirby, which isn’t canon to Mario. It’s a chain of non-connections.
      [18:38]
The planet has already been space faring for years. At least 40 years prior to modern day according to dialogue in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
      [19:30]
The Beanbean Kingdom borders the Mushroom Kingdom, not Sarasaland.
      [20:25]
Waluigi is explicitly not Wario’s brother. They’re unrelated, and they aren’t even really friends. They just team up to play sports.
      -- They're not brothers, either.
Shugo Takahashi: Blood related... nope. I never heard of that (laughs). It's pretty easy to see if you watch the opening cutscene of Mario Power Tennis, but they're just partners, not friends, and they don't even go as far as helping each other out.
      [21:05]
      E. Gadd is neither an alien, nor does he interface with alien technology. He’s just a human, using human technology to create human inventions.
      [21:20]
Professor E. Gadd didn’t create the paint used in Super Mario 64, that’s just naturally occurring magic paint, but he did invent the Magic Brush from Super Mario Sunshine which can harness said paint.
      [21:55]
King K. Rool isn’t a real scientist. “Baron K. Roolenstein” is just one of his personas. He performs no real science in his appearances.
Donkey Kong didn’t make the Mini Marios either, but he does make the Monkey Robots seen throughout the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games.
      [22:00]
This is not Cranky Kong in his younger years, this is the modern Donkey Kong. Not sure why you think it should be Cranky Kong, that wouldnt really make any sense.
      [23:00]
The Koopalings weren’t stripped of their familial titles, they were just never his kids now. It’s a retcon. Bowser and the Koopalings are just normal, natural members of the Koopa species, not magical creations.
      [24:00]
If you’re trying to say Bowser was sent back in time here, that clearly isn’t the case. Bowser was just born some time before Mario & Luigi and therefore existed in that time period already.
      [24:50]
Super Mario Sunshine is literally the first time Mario meets Bowser Jr., meaning every other game where Bowser Jr. appears is after Super Mario Sunshine. Clearly Super Mario Sunshine is not the end of the Mushroom-Koopa conflict - far from it. In fact, the conflict never ends in the series thus far. It’s ongoing as of the latest games in the timeline and will likely continue for many games to come.
      [25:20]
At the end of Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser expresses clear pride at his son for saying he wants to fight Mario again, before implying they’ll continue with their evil schemes after a short rest. Even if the Magikoopas were using Bowser (but again, they aren’t), Super Mario Sunshine would certainly not be the time for that realisation.
Bowser is still clearly a villain in every Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mario Baseball, Mario Strikers, etc. game.
      [26:25]
Balloon Fight doesn’t take place in Mario’s World. The inclusion here isn’t incredibly arbitrary - there’s no real connection. Crossovers in general should not have been included here. Nintendo has been very clear that the Mario Universe (Mario, Yoshi, DK, Wario) is separate from other universes from its various other series.
All in all, there are a lot of things to correct here, but I hope you take them into consideration and try to make some adjustments for your next video!

My theory is that Bowser Jr is a rebel against his father, allying himself with Mario & co in secret
(Not to say he hates Bowser, he just is against his regime in the Koopa Kingdom)
The only person who can make portals from paint is Bowser Jr, so he must have been the one to set up all the paintings in Mario 64
He purposefully made the paintings lead to places full of Power Stars bowser had stolen
This is because he felt bad about what he did in Luigi's Mansion, trapping Mario in a painting (although he was likely manipulated into doing it by King Boo)
And all this is why he allies with Mario in Bowser's Fury

Great video! You forgot about all the alternate dimension stuff though, which a whole can of worms. The Smithy Gang from Super Mario RPG use this to take over for a little bit. Also the Paper Mario World is another dimension accessed through a storybook. And this can explain how stuff like Smash happens, it's just a hub for different dimensions with portals made by Master Hand or something.
Though Paper Mario opens up a whole other can of worms, does that mean that places like Rogueport and all the dimensions in Super exist in the normal Mario World also? I mean the star Spirits already exist in both Paper Mario and the normal Mario World, plus Black paint with Color Splash and then Bowser's Fury, so maybe? Obviously stuff like the Royal Stickers and Origami of living beings doesn't exist in the form they do since that relies on the world being made of Paper, but it's interesting to notate how the earlier game could or could not be canon with normal Mario as well.
Also to tie into the Subcon Dream stuff, there's also Pi'illo Island, whose residents are naturally attuned with the "Dream World," along with other characters like Antasma and Luigi being naturally attuned with it. Perhaps Mario being Luigi's brother also created a pseudo Dream portal in Super Mario Bros 2? That would explain how characters like Birdo who once were part of a dream, came to the Mushroom World, maybe they entered the world through a Dream portal?

My fav theory about the Mario universe is, as I call it, the Actor Theory.
It was born when realizing that making a Mario timeline is impossible as some games contradict themselves. The biggest example of that is in Lugi's Mansion where Mario and Luigi meet E. Gadd for the first time and where a fortune teller ghost tells us that "Mario had soundly defeated Bowser" while wondering if "King Boo somehow revived Bowser", meaning that in this game, Bowser is dead, but like really dead forever. But in some later games, like Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, we have Mario & Luigi, already knowing E. Gadd while Bowser is alive. Yeah, clearly Mario games are just fictions made without that much care about a perfect continuity, so how is it possible to make a perfect continuity?
You don't. If they're all fictions that can't have a perfect continuity, then let's just say that they're that in their own diegesis! We already know that SMB3 is a stage play, and it's hinted that other games are fictions too, SM64 has a cameraman, Paper Mario games are books. Maybe some could even be video games! X^) So why not extending that to the other games?
But obviously, those fiction would reside in a same world, a coherent one with a perfect continuity that can be inferred by what we see of it: The Actor World. The world where Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Wario, and everyone else are just the actors partially making those fictions. And not all games have to be in the Fiction World, some would clearly happen in the Actor World. Games that would be hard to place in a classic model, that don't have much to do with the main ones like maybe for the DKC games (but we'll talk about those later), or where the Mario characters are out of character compared to the main games, like for the Arcade Mario games, likely happening before Mario being a renown actor, or the Wario Ware series, and the Mario Kart, Tennis, Golf, Strikerz, etc. which are like an intermediate: they happen in the real world but the actors are still playing their characters while Karting, Tennissing, Golfing, Strikerzing, etc., with some even having fiction in it like the last Mario Tennis, those games would kinda be like catching.
There is just one series which I'm not sure if it would be in the Actor World or the Fiction World though, those being the sequels of Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong 2 is probably in the Actor World given how Mario is the fricking bad guy. But for Donkey Kong GameBoy and the Mario vs DK series, it's hard to tell. I think that the events of Donkey Kong were what made Mario famous, allowing him to be an actor, and that those games are just an adaptation of the events of Donkey Kong, and with modern DK, not OG DK which is Cranky, also joining the actors. That also leaves the DKC games (and the other Rare games by extension) which are so disconnected to the Mario games that it's really hard to know if they're Fictions or happening in the Actor World. I think they're fictions though, 't would be weird for DK to leave the island he's protecting to be an actor among other reasons but a case could be made for them to be a part of the Actor World I guess.
But outside of that minor inconvenience. The Actor Theory is really just a perfect explanation about all of the Mario Universe, and a relatively simple one too. It just works. It also makes theorizing about Mario games easier, with the games that makes the least sense simply out of the question. Because yes, it's still possible to theorize about the Fiction World (which btw could very well be Fiction WorldS) as, like irl, even though they don't have a perfect consistency, there's still a consistency. And for the imperfect parts, we can jus say that they're inconsistencies, which would be hard to buy if we pretend it's a fully coherent world, but with the Actor Theory, it's easier to accept that there are inconsistencies in the Fiction World(s).
It explains a lot, is consistent, is simple, makes sense, nothing disproves it (as far as I know), it's an explanation that doesn't come out of nowhere, and it makes theorizing about those worlds easier and better while expanding the universe of the series, and I don't know about any other model about the Mario diegesis that does all of that better. I really don't see why it shouldn't be accepted by everyone. :^)

Oh and fun fact since the vid is a bout "A Map of the Mario Universe", it is possible to make a map of the Actor World. In Mario Kart 8's DLC/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, in the Super Bell Subway, there is a map with most of the game's racetracks, which are locations of the Actor World, it's a subway map obviously so it's not the most reliable source of information but it's still one. With this map and the tracks it's possible to make a rough map of the game, and other games withe educated guesses, and thus have a rough map of a part of the Actor World, which is super cool.
I could give links to the map here but TH-cam doesn't like links to things that aren't TH-cam being in comments so here's instead the vid of the person who made the map, with the links to the maps being in the description. Maybe you could even watch the vid if you want and either understand French or trust in TH-cam's automatic subtitle translation.

@@noahohaver, no lol. I know that those type of theories are often disregarded immediately without even thinking more about it but that is just a really stupid thing to do. Let me explain:
Many fiction/dream theories are great, work completely, and can even pretend to be the most likely to be correct models for their fictions. But most of the time no one cares about even looking into those because of some other, like Ash's coma for the most famous, that... Ugh. I would't even dare to call them theories. They're just stupid useless off the mark rationalisation that pulls a middle finger at while not caring in the slightest about the work they pretend to be about, its messages, its authors and its fans. So in a nutshell big shit of a "theory".
Mario's Actor Theory (and others like FnaF 4's and Majora's Mask's Dream Theories) is not like that at all. It's not here mainly to explain everything, as it is possible do explain most of Mario without it even though it makes it harder. No, this theory is here to enrich and expand the series, it is based on in-game elements, doesn't destroy the canon's logic, and may even be partially intentional by the developers as Miyamoto himself said things in interviews that points at this Theory being true. Simply said, it doesn't take content away from the games, it's still possible to analyse and theorize about the Fiction World, it only adds to it. Rejecting such a model purely because of it's form is futile and off the mark, it's fundamentally not the same thing as the big shits of a "theory".
If you still see it as a Ash's coma-like shit, you didn't get it, in which case I surely didn't explain well and I'm sorry for it. And I also know that it can be really hard to stop disregarding all theories about dreams fictions and things like that. :^(

Finally, the long-awaited Mario universe video has been made! As something of a lore nut myself, I really appreciate the attempt to fully map out this whole maddening canon the Mario franchise has!
Also, if Kirby and Zelda are indeed part of the Mario universe then there's potentially 2 very interesting connections that can be made:
    1) In Rosalina's story book, the first Luma she meets has apparently been waiting for his mother, who he says would be travelling on a comet. While the comet itself isn't important, the fact that there was a Star Mother before Rosalina could imply that the Star Mother is an incarnation of Void (from Kirby Star Allies' Soul Melter EX mode), a god that incarnates whenever it encounters extreme emotion, in this case motherly love. This may have some precedent since Zero, the source of Dark Matter in Kirby, is believed by many to be an incarnation of Void born from extreme hatred that, much like the Star Mother, can incarnate multiple times (see Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64).
    2) Since the Dark Star from Bowser's Inside Story is a being of darkness that needs to be sealed by the "Seven Sages" and the sealing power of a mystical princess... So the Dark Star is likely a form or offshot of Ganon. Either an offshoot like Agahnim in A like to the Past/the Magician from Zelda 2 or the actual damaged mind of Ganon that was stripped from his body by Twinrova's botched resurrection ritual in the Oracle games.
Thank you for coming to my deranged lore-based TED talk.

    1. Due to the rhythm heaven series being closely related to warioware, I feel like it would've been appropriate to put those games on the list especially since they have a canonical land that those games take place in.
    2. I'm not sure if you mentioned this in the kong family tree video but it seems like you didn't talk about the lands and characters from the donkey kong jungle beat game like the cactus king and dread kong.

This is really cool! One of my favorite, and one of few remaining, TH-cam passions is people exploring and interpreting the inconsistent and fantastical lore/timeline of Nintendo’s universe. I love this stuff.
A few things I noticed, though:
New Donk is not meant to be the literal location of Donkey Kong (1981). If so, not only does every one of Mario’s “workman-era” games, as mentioned, have to take place there, but so does Punch-Out. That features characters who, like Mario, were meant to be from real world places.
Also, Donkey Kong I (Cranky), was at one time one of Mario’s jobs. He worked at a circus where DK was performing. He may not have founded Donkey Kong island yet (or rediscovered/returned home).
Also Waluigi isn’t necessarily Wario’s brother. Just a partner in crime.

    • @stanstanstan2597

Also, Bowser refers to the “Royal Koopa Bloodline” at one point. I don’t think he was created by the Magikoopas. Unless Kamek just lied to him about it I guess. I tend to think Bowser is part of a special, rare species of Koopa which is so powerful that particular bloodlines are the undisputed ruler of all Koopa. That might be why he adopted the Koopalings.

Super Mario Odyssey has an actual world map, so we know where the Mushroom Kingdom and New Donk City are at least.
Because of Peachette, my theory is that Peach herself is a special kind of toad.
Mario Party DS ends with Bowser befriending Mario and the gang, explaining stuff like Mario Kart, and no one ever talks about it
I've thought a lot about crossovers like this, and believe me pulling in half the gaming industry is an understatement. You could pull in just about every significant pop culture thing eventually - Fortnite has tons of connections including DC & Marvel which have been crossing over with stuff for decades, Smash Bros is only one step away from other big crossovers like Project X Zone & Kingdom Hearts, I could go on. Every new connection you make tends to pull in more connections, so you'll find your crossover web will grow exponentially.

Not to mention how Xenoblade Chronicles is connected to Xeno Saga which has Kazuya Mishima in it. As someone working on her own timeline and big lore ideas, this was very enjoyable! The idea of Bowser being a dark magic construct made by the Magikoopas is very interesting indeed. I’m not as knowledgeable about the DK and Wario series, so the Wario-Sarasaland connection is something I’ll have to look into myself!
Personally, I believe that Sunshine takes place smack in the middle of the timeline, assuming that this is the first time Mario or Peach encounters Jr., which is a major crux of my timeline! Imaging the ending as Bowser’s villainy breaking point is quite a fun twist, though.
Anyway, lots of interesting takes, and helped me with my own lore/timeline ideas! Well done video!

Additional info - Mario can now be seen canon alongside Rayman
There is an official comic touching on how DK and Bowser wound up in the Skylands, potentially “canonizing” Skylanders to the Marioverse.
    >Spyro is canon to Skylanders
    >Crash is canon to Spyro.
There is definitely more, but that’s just what comes immediately comes to mind.
Edit: Kirby enemies are also in Links awakening, potentially connecting all three universes via dreamlands. Which makes sense because I’m fairly certain “physical dream travel” is canon in all 3.

But how does Odyssey and the New Super Mario Bros. series fit into this? There’s also Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, the rest of Mario & Luigi after Superstar Saga, and the rest of the Yoshi and Wario Land series’ beyond what was mentioned. Also how would the events of Galaxy affect the world? The universe literally collapses in that game, and the universal reset Rosalina preforms results in all of the planets being merged into one. What would be the consequences of that?

NSMB mostly seems like random conflicts with Bowser that could occur at any given time between SMB and Sunshine. The RPGs I tried to keep to a minimum because...getting into the reasons and confusion there almost deserves a follow-up video all its own. No promises. Regarding Galaxy, I don't have an answer as far as the universal reset is concerned - we may have to assume the way certain events in Mario games are presented to us are allegorical.

Quick note: Mr. Gnw is here too, and tied deeply to Wario.
Wario land 4 was just Wario robbing Shokora's grave, Shokora was cursed and turned into GnW. GnW dissapears into the void at the end, perfects minigames to avoid going insane, eventually gets back and becomes an instrumental figure in Warioware.
(Also, as per brawl dojo, gnw is a self-replicating hive mind thats benevolent, so him working the factory in dkcr makes sense).
Plus, its arguable paper mario was a oot-style split caused by gnw trying to get home that gave rise to smash bros.
Gnw got into melee, then back home.
If you want support that GnW is Shokora, watch his Subspace cutscene and give any other coherent reasoning for it.

And creating microgames to pass time in the lonely white emptiness of a void explains the handhelds well.
      Plus, game and wario.
And now he has cohesive backstory.
The gnw galleries could even be showing parallels between timelines?
      And uhhh, on that note

It’s a good thing you stopped while you can, because if you tried to include everything, you’d end up with not only half of the video game industry, but also half of the film industry. It’s insane how much it ramps up from basically anywhere. That’s the magic of cameos. Like, every character, at least the playable ones in Smash Bros, (and way more,) can canonically exist in some way, except for Min Min. Because Arms was too new, and they didn’t add Little Mac to the roster.
This also puts an infinite multiverse level of stakes for the World of Light. Now I’m questioning how many times the world was in threat of being ruined, or how many times the apocalypse occurred. Also how is none of this coming up in conversations for the other series? Like a sitcom character could of said about all of this junk that exists in their world, and the amount of times the world was saved. Or the fact that magic exists in multiple forms, or that they’re hundreds of literal gods, or even Pokémon. How are most religions supposed to work as intended, when there’s literally magic to bring back people to life, and actual gods? I can go on with questions about all of this, but I will stop here. It’s just interesting to think about…everything I said in this single comment that like 2 people will read.

A couple of things to add:
    - Mario and Sonic are 100% connected through their time at the Olympics
    - Through Mario RPG, we also have a connection to Final Fantasy... Which also connects to Kingdom Hearts... Oh no...
    - If Mario Kart is canon, and Zelda is confirmed to be connected, then you can also connect F-Zero, Animal Crossing, and Splatoon through Mario Kart.
    - Furthermore, Animal Crossing in all of its weirdness has had items directly from several Nintendo properties in it before, of course including Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, etc.
    - If we wanna get really weird with it, Splatoon also technically brings us Ika Musume, the anime character from Squid Girl. Not sure what to feel about that one, but let's just go with it.
    - If you REALLY wanna stretch with collaborations, Puyo Puyo has crossed over with other franchises before, including Sonic (outside of Mean Bean Machine), and uh... Neon Genesis Evangelion... Am I mentioning this solely because it's my favorite anime? Yes, yes I am. Evangelion connects to a lot of things though, so it's only a matter of time before it gets connected.
    - Going completely off the walls bananas, Evangelion connects to Super Robot Wars. Amongst the many crossovers in there, we have characters from Xenosaga. That means that through KOS-MOS and T-ELOS, we can also connect the Xenoblade trilogy... and maybe X, but we don't talk about that one.
    - Since Sonic is here, we get a LOT of weird collaborations. For example, Hatsune Miku has had a lot of Sonic cameos and such in the past, like a full on costume/onesie in Project Diva.
    - Hatsune Miku also may or may not now be canon to the Pokemon universe thanks to Project VOLTAGE, but it's at least worth mentioning.
    - Hatsune Miku ALSO has a reskin of Puyo Puyo in Project Mirai, so I think at this point we should just accept her existence
    - Hatsune Miku is also a DLC character in the Persona 4 Dancing game, soooooo yeah.
Eventually, you can just connect every series from Smash without actually touching Smash. At this point, it's just all part of the same gaming multiverse.

I just assume that the mushroom kingdom is a large domain, composing of several monarchies (mario 3). but is probably somewhere close to Yoshi's Island (and indirectly, Dinosaur Land. if the Yo'ster Isle being yoshi's island in Mario RPG means anything). early promotional materials for Odyssey shows Delphino Isle as part of the world map but was removed (it still remains in the game's data as UV mapping data for the globe). also DK94 is a prequel to Super Mario Bros since DK ingests a poison mushroom and grows at the end, you even see the mushroom kingdom. Wario having the ability to fly planes isn't really uncommon since there's Wario's Woods, VB Wario Land and Wario Land 3. would not be surprised if the timeline went Yoshi's Island, Island DS, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Donkey Kong 2, Donkey Kong 94, Super Mario Bros, 3, World. if the DS version of 64 was canon, maybe Mario Land, Mario Land 2, Wario Land, 64 DS?
Also, Lolo and Lala are *not* Lololo and Lalala. presumably, they added an extra La/Lo, because the Lolo characters were made independently from Nintendo's involvement as far back as the MSX days, whereas Kirby is a combined HAL Labs/Nintendo collaboration. it may help that the Lolo games were originally made by remixing levels from previous games (with dubious JP/US release windows). this also excludes the extended Eggerland characters as well as the Part Time UFO characters since it was made separately from nintendo as a mobile game.
One take i would assume is that any place that seems relatively in-line with the real world could probably be tossed aside as New Donk City, like Donkey Kong, Mario Bros and Wrecking Crew. the Wario games seems arguably more cartoony but themed to a degree. like having islands named after kitchen appliances, condiments and food. a few indirect characters/monarch in Wario-related games have food names like princess shokora (Japanese-phonetic french word for Chocolate), maaaaaybe Prince Sablé and Princess Tiramisu (if the Mad Sciencestein in the Wario Land games are the same one from The Frog the Bell Tolls?). also technically-fictional characters like Count Cannoli, Carpaccio and Terrormisu (or Margherita, in japan) in Wario: Master of Disguise. Wario games usually features dimensions sealed inside artefacts, rather than maybe-portals like the Paintings are in Odyssey and (maybe) Mario 64.
Finally, the MGS games are almost 1:1 with the real world. and are the real world. but any appearances in bomberman or smash doesn't really count.

Something of note that kinda bothered me, but Sarasaland isn't a Desert Kingdom, that's just Birabuto, Sarasaland is formed by four kingdoms: Birabuto (The desert one), Muda (the one with the UFOs), Easton (The one with the Moai statues) and Chai (The ancient China-esque one)

My idea is that the paintings from Super Mario 64 are like windows into tiny pocket universes, opposed to teleporters to real locations.
In the Whomp's Fortress painting, you see the fortress. Jump in and you are taken into the fortress seen in the painting. The levels being the paintings themselves explains the level boundaries, and maybe even the blurred textures (Like smeared paint). There are more reasons I can think of that support this idea, but they're hard to put into text. It also might just straight up be the canon explanation, as described in some obscure magazine or manual.
There are outliers to this idea. I'm pretty sure Hazy Maze Cave is real, since the metal cap stage spits you outside the castle. Same thing with a few other secret stages, and maybe some other levels too.

I would counter this idea by bringing up Throwback Galaxy from Mario Galaxy 2 being the same place and the implication of it being visited after Super Mario 64, as the walls from "Blast Away The Wall" are still missing, and the Bob-omb Buddies seem to remember Mario. It is a real planet, the painting is just another way of accessing it.
Mario Sunshine can also give evidence for this, as Bowser Jr's paint smears can lead to Bianco Hills and more. While a comparatively shorter distance, being another place on the exact same island, this suggests that paint portals to real places are a thing in this universe. I think that Cavern of the Metal Cap and a few other places in Super Mario 64 just happen to be nearby.
I think the only canon universes-inside-a-universe are the Paper Universe as seen in M&L Paper Jam and that random music box from Wario Land 3. And maybe Subcon but I have no clue if that place even exists at all.

      1. I'm pretty sure Galaxy 2 doesn't actually happen. The page turning transitions in the opening level/cutscenes and the scene of Rosalina in the library reading to the Lumas shows that it is almost certainly Rosalina retelling the events of the first game to perhaps a younger generation of Lumas, but she altered some details for whatever reason. (Lubba instead of herself, different galaxies, etc) There are some things that contradict this, like Rosalina literally showing up at the end, and I have an explanation, but I don't want to write a whole explanatory essay.
      2. Goop from sunshine is very different to 64's paintings.

      1) Galaxy 2 very much happens. The intro to it is heard at the end of NSMBW (putting those right next to each other in the timeline), and it's referenced multiple times in the series later on. With the star festival happening again, its safe to assume that when the universe prematurely reset, the events of galaxy 1 were redone to prevent another universe destruction (its following what rosalina said about each incarnation being slightly different.). This could explain the similarities better than just having the whole thing be faked.
      2) goop and the paintings are extremely similar. They are both harnessing star power (or shine/moon power, they're all the same thing as proven by Cappy and Toadsworth's dialogue), and take you to different places when you step inside. Also, the magic paintbrush responsible for the goop was invented by E. Gadd, the scientist who has experience with paintings (LM1 ending).
      3) We've seen SM64 courses outside of SM64 a few times. With Throwback Galaxy in SMG2, and Bob-Omb Battlefield in Mario Golf Toadstool Tour just off the top of my head.

The seven kings we see in Mario 3 are probably actors, as the game is just a stage play as confirmed by Myamoto.

    • @Eris1987
      @Eris1987 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ehhh
      I don't think so....
People will challenge him on say his Zelda claims but due to inaccuracy but not his Mario claims.
In addition to many things he says is wrong probably on purpose, and typically in the form of jokes. Case in point, Link's last name being Link, Dr. Mario not being a doctor, and Bowser Junior being his son.
But that is neither here nor there.
When it comes to Mario lore things like the games and manual override anything Miyamoto says.
With that being said, the events of SMB3 being a stage play in universe is unlikely.
So something I've noticed is that the Mario games are presented to the player as if they are playing an action movie adventure or tv series.
That we as the players are meant to be viewing this game like we are playing a movie or tv show.
For starters in the Super Mario Bros. manual on page 2 in the Japanese Text you get this from the story section.
_"The Mario inside the TV is you. Only you can bring this adventure quest (expedition) to a conclusion."_
This also could be used to explain Super Mario Bros. 3's aesthetic. Instead of interpreting SMB3 as an in universe stage play, it's actually meant to feel like we are playing out a stage play performance.
This would allow also explain why SMB3 did indeed happen.
      Why did it actually happen?
      Well....
First off the Airship from SMB3 exists in another game, aka Super Mario Bros. 4 Super Mario World. Confirmed in the manual on page 20, the Sunken Ship is the same Airship from SMB3.
_"This strange looking sunken ship. Haven't you seen it somewhere before? That's right, in Super Mario Bros. 3..."_
Secondarily in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze the level Frosty Fruits contains a SMB3 Koopa Tank. This also means that Bowser or at least the Koopas once invaded the Kong Archipelago.
There are also many objects and characters that were introduced in it, still exist in the game canon and show up later. This includes Dry Bones, Boom Boom, Boss Bass, Fire Bros, the Clown Car, the Koopalings, and the Airship.
This is actually backed up on page 35 of the SMB3 Manual where it says.
_"A host of new characters have joined Bowser and his turtle tribe. With this information on these new enemies, you'll be well prepared."_
Speaking of manuals, in the SMB4SMW manual in story section on page 2 it says _"after saving the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser and the rest of the Koopas in Super Mario 3, Mario and Luigi needed to recuperate from their adventures. Together they agreed the best place to vacation was a magical place called Dinosaur Land.."_
This places the events of SMB4SMW right after SMB3.
SMS listing off the events of SMB3 as having happened prior.
In Super Mario Odyssey when Mario captures Bowser we get to see Bowser's memories.
We Bowser remembers the events of games like Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and Super Mario 64.
In Mario Party 9 when Mario and friends head East to Toad/Adventure Road to stop Bowser, Bowser and Bowser Junior state this is in the Grasslands. We can also tell this is the Mushroom Kingdom still due to the water and hills.
Since Dry Dry Desert is to the East the it's probably part of the Desert we see in New Super Mario Bros Wii, and New Super Mario Bros DS. Both of which you travel east from the Mushroom Kingdom to get to. The great Desert is probably called Desert Land or Desert Hill since that place is implied to be East of the Grasslands.
So in Mario kart DS there is a track called Figure-8 Circuit, and it has the same blocks in the background from Super Mario Bros. 3.
This places Figure-8 Circuit in the Grasslands, particularly in the area from SMB3.
This also reveals that these blocks are actually literal part of the Mario World, and not props for a stage play.
In Mario Kart DS there is a track known as DS Desert Hills which even has an Angry Sun in the background.
This is not the first time we have seen a Desert Hills, we have seen one under the name Desert Land or Desert Hill from Super Mario Bros. 3.
For arguments sake, let's say SMB3 is an in universe stage play performance. Then it would have to depict actual events, and is probably made by Broadway Musical Entertainment.

Great video! As a long time Mario fan it often dissapoints me when people claim "Mario doesn't have a story." or when they take Miyamoto's quote that that he sees the Mario cast as a troupe of actors that can fit into any situation literaly. Even if that were true, where's the fun in that? Using you're imagination and having fun is what Mario is all about. I've always enjoyed listening to fan theories and headcannons about how the Mario's world fits together. That being said there are a few common misconceptions that I thought I'd clarify as well as a few of my own thoughts:
Super Mario Bros 2 was NOT just a dream. The Japanese exclusive sequel BS Super Mario USA confirms the events happend and gives a better explanation as to what Subcon, the land of dreams, actually is. Basically Subcon is a collection of many dream worlds. When ever someone dreams (referred to as "subcontractors") it creates a new Subcon. BS Super Mario USA explains that after the events of Super Mario Bros 2 Wart, AKA his Japanese name Mamu, simply escaped into another dream which helps explain his appearance in Link's Awakening. BS Super Mario USA also reveals Subcon has a King named Ōsama. Could he be related to Prince Dreambert?
Waluigi is not Wario's brother. This was confirmed in a 2008 interview by Shugo Takahashi and stated in the DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games where a news brief says "Wario and Waluigi aren't brothers."
According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the original arcade Donkey Kong game takes place in New York, not New Donk City. Many believe the original New York setting has been retconed due to the introduction of New Donk City, but I'll explain why this may not be the case in a bit so please bear with me. According to Miyamoto in the Donkey Kong 1994 Wonder Life Special, Donkey Kong was Mario's pet. He kidnaps Mario's girlfriend Pauline not because he's in love with her, but because he's trying to make fun of his owner Mario. We don't know why Donkey Kong wants to make fun of Mario, Miyamoto simply says that "it's a long story". One possible explanation comes from the Game & Watch title "Donkey Kong Circus" which depicts Donkey Kong balancing on a ball and juggling various objects on a construction site that looks identical to the one in the arcade game. Whenever Donkey Kong makes a mistake Mario points and laughs at his pet. Perhaps this laughing is what caused Donkey Kong to become enraged and kidnap Pauline much like the cutscene in Mario Vs Donkey Kong where Donkey Kong kidnaps the Toads after they and Mario start pointing and laughing at him. After Mario rescues Pauline he take Donkey Kong to "some island in the South" according to Miyamoto in in a 2000 intertview for Nintendo Online Magazine and the events of Donkey Kong Jr. happen.
Also according to Miyamoto the events of the Mario Bros arcade game take place in New York with Mario and Luigi encountering strange creatures that are coming out of the pipes in the sewers. There Mario & Luigi find a Warp Pipe that transports them to the Mushroom Kingdom and the original Super Mario Bros game takes place shortly after this. Many people believe Mario's Brooklyn origin featured in various shows, comics, and movies are simply made up and not canon to the games, but Miyamoto confirmed in a 2023 interview that was always the story he had intended for Mario. This means that as of 2023 Mario & Luigi being from Brooklyn, New York is still canon. In fact this origin was referenced in the games thanks to Super Mario Maker in the level "Did Somebody Call a Plumber?" Mario himself also mentions that he's from Brooklyn in Mario's Time Machine, but I can understand why some might not consider the educational games canon.
"But wait!" You might ask. "How can the original Donkey Kong take place in New York if Donkey Kong Land and Super Mario Odyssey both confirm it took place in a city known as Big Ape City or New Donk City? Doesn't the ending of the Gameboy remake confirm it takes place somewhere near the Mushroom Kingdom?" That would be true if the Gameboy Donkey Kong game was a remake, but according to the Super Game Boy Strategy Guide and the 3DS eshop description which says: "Donkey Kong has once again kidnapped Pauline!". That means this isn't a retelling of the arcade game's story but instead a brand new adventure where Donkey Kong has kidnapped Pauline a second time. That means both stories are true: Donkey Kong kidnapped Pauline first in New York City and then kidnapped her a second time in New Donk City. The only hole in the Mario and Luigi are from Brooklyn origin is of course Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island which depicts the Stork delivering the Mario Bros to the Mushroom Kingdom. But this simply means that sometime while they were still babies Mario and Luigi moved to New York City, we just haven't seen that happen yet.
Also I'm not sure if Wario is responsible for New Donk City. It's canon status is debatable, but according to Funky Kong in the Donkey Kong Country Rumble in the Jungle novel Big Ape City (which seems to be another name for New Donk City since both areas are confirmed to be where Mario rescued Pauline unless Pauline was kidnapped in another similar but different city for a third time) was created by the Kongs originally but as they began to favor the surrounding jungles, caves and mountains the city was eventually abandoned. In Super Mario Odyssey one New Donker is quoted as saying "This festival tells the story of our city's beginnings!". Since the festival seems to be a recreation of the Donkey Kong arcade game it seems to imply that humans didn't arrive in New Donk City until sometime after Donkey Kong started kidnapping Pauline. Perhaps New Donkers are formerly New Yorkers that moved there after hearing about Mario and Pauline's adventures? It wouldn't be the first time something like that happened in this series like with Little Fungitown in the Beanbean Kingdom.
I've also head cannoned that many of Mario's odd jobs took place before he settled on being a plumber in Mario Bros, but Dr. Mario did not take place in New York or New Donk because the manual for the NES game has Mario explain that his is working in the Mushroom Kingdom Hospital with Peach as his nurse. Interestingly the manual states that viruses in the game are a result of a lab experiment gone wrong but the game's ending shows the viruses getting picked up by a UFO. Are the viruses actually from beyond the stars?
I disagree that Bomberman would ever do business with Wario. Bomberman is a sentient robot hero with a strong sense of justice, even if we were to set a side his morals I don't see Bomberman wanting to associate with Wario after trying to stop him from invading his world as mentioned in the Wario Blast manual. Bomberman also has no need to purchase bombs because Bomberman uses the ancient Fire Stone to instantly create bombs as shown in Bomberman 64 the Second Attack. However Wario could potentially be supplying Bomberman's enemies with bombs such as the Hige Hige Bandits, the Crush Bombers, etc. The Wario Blast manual does mention that Wario "found the extra-dimensional portal that links his world to the one Bomberman inhabits." which could help explain how Wario is in contact with so many alien species. It's also worth mentioning that Mario explains in the Super Mario Land 2 manual that Wario "has been jealous of my popularity since we were boys." This doesn't contradict anything in your video, but I thought it was worth mentioning that Mario and Wario have known each other since they were kids.
Thank you if you managed to read all this! I look forward to your video about the RPGs!

The shroobs invading the mushroom kingdom/world in the past because their world is barren and the bros having to team up with their past selves, the pi'illo island and its ancient history and connection to the larger dream world (and subcon presumably), and the book in paper jam containing the alternate dimension of paper folk where paper mario takes place have vast implications for mario lore and wouldve loved to see you try to make em fit!
