    Looks great. Going to attempt this on my xjs. Its developed a caliper leak somewhere. I imagine this leak will make the pistons harder to remove. I don't have a compressed air gun but if i get stuck I will have to go to a garage i guess!

    Much help. Only thing i add is a 12v air pump to shoot the pistons out. I have 2 tiny o rings with my kit. Assuming they are for the bleed valve to cover since kit didn't have like yours did. But overall pretty painless (except for a thumb) TY!

    Awesome video...Just to note though. if your seal kit didn't come with grease like mine... you have to use a synthetic brake and caliper grease. not just general purpose. eg CRC / Bosch make good ones.

      Only use Red rubber grease by Castrol or hydraulic assembly fluid by Centric, Carlson, Raybestos, all on Amazon or RockAuto. Silicone grease I am not sure about, I cannot get any of the brands to advise using it where it comes into contact with brake fluid, its Ok for use everywhere else on the caliper tho, I will use it on my next rebuild and see how it does.

    • @cup_and_cone
      @cup_and_cone 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@metalhalide4043 It sucks ass that no local parts store in America carriers specific caliper piston seal grease...in fact, even most part stores don't sell it online to order.
      Too add onto what you said, 100% silicone grease is fine for nitrile or natural rubber o-rings (most square cut piston seals are natural rubber), but it will swell silicone o-rings. That said, 100% silicone still is not good for contact with DOT 3/4 (is fine for DOT 5, though), so you cannot use it for piston rebuilds anyway.
      Red rubber grease is about the only thing out there, or assembly lube (but these will dry out over time whereas grease won't).

    If I were doing this I would slip the boots over the piston in hand , then insert the piston with the boot attached into the bore of the caliper. I think it would be easier this way

  • @abyssalsoul6216
    @abyssalsoul6216 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The trick with the ring is to keep it expanded ( pulled apart) while you slip it over the boot and into place. No need to grease the ring then as doing it this way you need a good grasp which a greased ring will not afford you

    Amazing job !!! Your video was very helpful !! Well explained with visual instructions 💯 However i did the same job with the same calipers like yours but i found 2 small seals in my rebuild caliper kit and i realized these seals are located between the casting of the calipers from the left to the right ( his function is to seal the passage of the brake fluid from one side to the other one ) . You forget to mention that in that video !!! Otherwise very useful video !! Keep it up !! One more Suscriber !! 🙏🏾

    If you don't have compressed air. Remove the pads and depress the brake pedal. That will push them out enough for you to work them out yourself. Be VERY careful not to scratch the outside of the piston unless you are replacing it.

    So say I may have previously used a hammer to "unstick" some of the brake pistons and slightly deformed the edge of the piston (that presses against the pads), worst case scenario with this?

    At 9:30 you show the piston. I have some corrosion on the lip of the piston where the small part of the rubber boot fits on. Brake cleaner won't clean it off. It's not much but I'm not sure if it's okay to clean it and use it. What do you recommend on cleaning it and/or reusing it.

    Excellent video! What if a piston is seized? Will the compressed air still push them out? My 07 4Runner front calipers both have seized pistons. Just wondering if they’ll come out as easily. Obviously if they don’t, you run the risk of damaging the pistons if you have to “wrestle” with them to get them out.

    I go to my mechanic friend almost every year to put on a new caliper and we always have same argument. He tells me to just buy a new caliper rather than refurb these myself. But damn $60 per caliper (includes shipping) sure adds up over the years. Never knew how technically simplistic this process was! Even if this whole process takes 2 hours for 4 pistons. Rebuild kit is $25. $60 - $25 = $35. $35/2 = $17.50 an hour. That's a fairly good savings for most of us. Plus, you have the personal satisfaction and piece of mind knowing you did this professionally. So yea - this project can well be worth the trouble of doing. Your video was uncomplicated, you showed great detail where needed, and you pointed out any hazzards along the way. Great job! I know I just subscribed!!!

    Good video. Covers most things.
    It pays to separate the two caliper halves when doing this, as the fluid channel "O" ring should also be replaced, and it makes it easier to work on.
    .

    • @SpeedysGarage
      @SpeedysGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I "almost" separated the halves when I did the work, but the calipers weren't leaking when I got them off the salvage vehicle and I had visions of them leaking forever if I messed with them. The rebuild kit also did not include any internal seals. 2 years later they've done great, so leaving them together was the right decision in this case, but good to mention for calipers that may be further gone than mine were.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      OK. I'm surprised the kit didn't include an "O" ring.
      They generally don't leak there until very old.
      I'm currently doing up some Brembo's which are forty years old and one was leaking at the join.
      Also you can't use a standard "O" ring as the fluid will dissolve it. Must be made of the correct stuff. Bearing suppliers can get them in for you.
      Cheers Rob

    Speedy, thanks for the great, detailed tutorial. Really impressed by the quality of the editing too. I'm building 199mm calipers right now (too hard to find 231mms from a non-front end damaged vehicle for a *reasonable* price). I believe something you should emphasize that wasn't in your vid is at 7:30: you appeared to have C-clamped three of the almost seated pistons to get out the 4th one. That was escaping me for about 20 mins while doing the job last night :)

    I have Raybestos WK 1770 Seal and Boot Kit and now try to install it on a new cylinder (I'm rebuilding the calipers). Which way that rubber boot goes to the cylinder (you can flip it over both sides). When it is on the cylinder which side of the boot is up? There is one on which there are some numbers printed on the surface of it (15, 3100, in very small print). So when installed on the cylinder, should these numbers be visible, or it should be opposite side on the top? Thank you for the film.

    I probably only used a toothbrush on the pistons and I think they were a black plastic or ceramic er something. Don't remember. Maybe a piston is ruined or didn't get cleaned to a polish cause I didn't want to damage it. No idea why they're failing again.

    Hi, thanks for this great video. Do you know by chance if these would also fit a Toyota/ Lexus Harrier 1st Generation (1998 - 2003)?

    Really awesome video. I rebuilt mine on my Toyota a few years back. It feels great to do this job yourself because it's so easy. The satisfaction you get knowing you rebuilt them yourself is satisfying! Toyota caliper rebuilt kits are awesome too. Comes with everything you need to do the job right. You should have a follow up with painting. Thanks for sharing!

      I agree with you about the satisfaction of doing a job well yourself. I also am leery of rebuilt calipers that you get from a variety of places. I figure if I mess up some times because I don’t check things whoever is rebuilding these has a chance of also messing up. I have more faith in myself than I do in others usually. Also using Toyota parts can guarantee excellent seals and fitting of important pieces. I have used both Toyota parts and cheap knock off’s… When I can afford the Toyota parts I always get them or if it’s for something like this, a brake job or your life depends on the parts and the work. 'Muy importante !

    Somehow, I didn't expect the hardest part of this to be getting those dust boots back on and that ring seated... (they gave me two sets (8 boots) of boots and I had to figure out which set was the best fit)... thanks for the tutorial!

    Thanks for sharing, very good walk through. I did the Tundra 13 WL upgrade on my 3rd gen about a year ago and prematurely blew through a set of pads. The outside pads on both calipers were worn much more than the inside, and the pistons required significantly more pressure to retract into the caliper. These were remanufactured calipers from a reputable local auto parts store. Any idea why the pistons would begin to stick so soon? Bad remanufacture job?

      Had to be a bad rebuild job, sounds like one side pistons were sticking.

    What do you suggest for getting the pistons out if you dont have access to air to push them out

    • @SpeedysGarage
      @SpeedysGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had some mechanics tell me the bang them on a work bench. Not my style but won't likely hurt anything.

      @@SpeedysGarage thank you so much for the answer. Do you see a problem trying to take them out before compressing them in to get the fluid all out?

    Thanks! Nicely done - very informative! The Tundra calipers are amazingly similar to my 65 Mustang Kelsey-Hayes 4-pistons!

    I wanted to sand blast and paint my calipers professionally, but I knew I needed a kit to rebuild them. After seeing this, I'll just use the wire brush like you did and rebuild them. Then I'll have them painted!
    Thank you very much for this!
