I make a combo tea with reishi , chaga and turkey tail . Slow simmer. If you own a slow cooker , an overnighter is great and that way your first shot is breakfast .

False Turkey Tail genus is Stereum. Turkey Tail is really common, I find it all the time. I don't use it much because most of the specimens I find have holes and little beetles living in it... Nice video, thanks for sharing my friend. 👌
Stereum is not toxic. There are some look-alikes of turkey tail,but as I know,none is poisonous,even if it has not the same strong benefits as the turkey tail

I just found some Chaga the first time I went looking. Deep snow so I feel lucky because I saw it from a packed trail. Plan to go out again soon when the snow melts more ( before the Deer ticks appear ). Made a tea and drank it with coffee.

Add 2 tbsp of 1 tablespoon of chicken broth or beef broth depending on what you're making kind of tea you want to drink with the mushroom it helps add a benefit of flavor to the experience of the pallet of the mushroom with the earthiness
I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the city. I had a huge tree cut down in my backyard. I asked the guys to cut the trunk into three sections about 2.5ft each. I propped them up on bricks and covered them with a tarp for the winter. I was out doing lawn work this summer and decided to remove the tarp and discovered that one of the log pieces was loaded with Turkey Tail mushrooms. I searched and searched for all the details of the mushroom so I could be absolutely sure and YUP!, they are indeed turkey tails and a lot of them. The pattern that they grow in is so beautiful, but at the same time sets off my Trypophobia. I'll be definitely be harvesting some of them. I'm going to take a sample to a local botanist first (just to be absolutely sure).

Turkey's tail considered edible. Not that it is something you want to cook with. But often used during long hikes in the forest to keep your energized. Sometimes named as forest gum. Pretty chewy in it's consistency and nice subtle taste of fungi

Question though - don't mushrooms need to be cooked? As I understand anyway, most of them will at least upset your tummy raw, and those few that maybe don't will still need to be cooked to get their medicinal benefits? Just wondering. What i mostly did was boil water, and let it cool off after that with mushroom powder in it (like reishi etc.) just like you make a normal tea. So not really boiling for extended period of time. How big is the difference really compared to longer boiling with fine powder?

I've heard the wood decomposing ones, the ones that get hard and woody, like Reishi and turkey tail for instance, need longer hot water decoctions than other types of mushrooms. They need the dual process too: both hot water and ethyl alcohol to get the 'good stuff' out.

I find the fact you recommended not to gnaw on them rather funny as they are sometimes actually referred to as natures gum. When you chew on them they have a very mild flavour and you will actually be able to get some of the good stuff out of them by just chewing them, obviously you don't get nearly as much through hot water extraction, but hey neat tip i guess if you are a forager that likes to chew.
A bit muddled on that , and yes you missed an adequate description of what characterises a turkey tail and what doesn't. Seems to me this is the essential question to be clarified before brewing the stuff up .

Oh heck ya toss it into soups! I make a bone broth with Turkey Tail,Reishi and Turmeric. You essentially don't taste the Reishi even though I personally love its bitter flavour. TT is very neutral,earthy and light in its flavour.
I’m looking forward to finding some (with a knowledgeable local person), and making some extract powder to add to soups and sauces. Willing to try different natural remedies to help fight my Ménière’s. Thanks again for all the info you both give us!

Maybe "cedar" means something different in your area, but Juniperus virginiana (eastern redcedar) and so far as I know the true cedars (of Lebanon, Deodar, Atlas, etc) are valued because they are not resistant (& redcedar at least also gives off terpenes [essential oils] that repel clothes moths). If you have that wood, build trunks or clothes cabinets out of it, or something ornamental that can use the pretty (pre UV) color of the wood. Use something else to feed fungi. Cottonwood is a fast growing "trash" species that likes the same wet habitats as redcedar, and I am sure it will at least grow Oysters. Cedar Chips are often available at HD, Lowe's, etc, because they are fairly rot resistant and mildly attractive. Maybe that motivated the question. Unfortunately once chipped like that, they would be hard to use in woodworking. However you might be able to call your power company [especially in more rural areas where they can't offload the stuff on wastewater treatment plants for composting nor have contracts with municipal parks to use it as playground mulch ] and get mixed woodchips (enough of which would be hardwood in most parts of the US to probably support at least an aggressive oyster species) at very low cost if not free. They have to clear the land underneath power line easements to keep trees out of the wires.

Maybe "cedar" means something different in your area, but Juniperus virginiana (eastern redcedar) and so far as I know the true cedars (of Lebanon, Deodar, Atlas, etc) are valued because they are not resistant (& redcedar at least also gives off terpenes [essential oils] that repel clothes moths). If you have that wood, build trunks or clothes cabinets out of it, or something ornamental that can use the pretty (pre UV) color of the wood. Use something else to feed fungi. Cottonwood is a fast growing "trash" species that likes the same wet habitats as redcedar, and I am sure it will at least grow Oysters.
Cedar Chips are often available at HD, Lowe's, etc, because they are fairly rot resistant and mildly attractive. Maybe that motivated the question. Unfortunately once chipped like that, they would be hard to use in woodworking. However you might be able to call your power company [especially in more rural areas where they can't offload the stuff on wastewater treatment plants for composting nor have contracts with municipal parks to use it as playground mulch ] and get mixed woodchips (enough of which would be hardwood in most parts of the US to probably support at least an aggressive oyster species) at very low cost if not free. They have to clear the land underneath power line easements to keep trees out of the wires.
Technically, the preparation you described is a "decoction."

Like in the other video I'd say that's not a Trametes Versicolor but rather something like Trametes Ocracea or similar.
I was wondering about that, it looks very different from the mushrooms I thought were Trametes Versicolor around me at least, was wondering if it's just because i'm in another state or something.
