@@FreshCapMushrooms So would you say that, generally speaking, all mushrooms can/ should be boiled to extract the nutriments or does it really vary from one to the next, i.e. some would need fat to be assimilated and other have to be boiled before being ingested to bring their benefits?
Turkey's tail considered edible. Not that it is something you want to cook with. But often used during long hikes in the forest to keep your energized. Sometimes named as forest gum. Pretty chewy in it's consistency and nice subtle taste of fungi

Question though - don't mushrooms need to be cooked? As I understand anyway, most of them will at least upset your tummy raw, and those few that maybe don't will still need to be cooked to get their medicinal benefits?

I once had a summer job as a "Galterer" (herding juvenile cows on alpine meadows). They had some Turkey Tail Schnaps, which was quite an experience :)

Hey, glad I finally found some info that actually says that it doesn't have to be drunk in a hot tea, I boil up about a cup of chopped dried turkey tail and it makes about 2 litres that I mix with ginger, honey and a bit of lemon, each morning I have a glass with my breakfast, I can never finish a cup of any hot drink so I'm glad to know it's just as good cold.

Eating the fresh ones raw is my favorite way to eat them! I chew them for a long time until they're just mush, and makes for a good gummy trail snack.

I just found some Chaga the first time I went looking. Deep snow so I feel lucky because I saw it from a packed trail. Plan to go out again soon when the snow melts more ( before the Deer ticks appear ). Made a tea and drank it with coffee.
Really that's what they say about many mushrooms.
It would be respectful to know which one really came first.

I make a combo tea with reishi , chaga and turkey tail . Slow simmer. If you own a slow cooker , an overnighter is great and that way your first shot is breakfast .

Brilliant video, if you read every comment, extraction goes like this: dehydrate at 60C, so it can be ground into a powder in a coffee grinder., toreally extract some of those turpenoids and polyphenols need alcohol, alcohol is defined by an OH group like vodka Ch3CH2 OH, common glycerine has 3 OH groups. The reason its took to a fine powder is to increse surface area and get about 1000 times better extraction, 100ml glycerine, 400ml Vodka or absolute alcohol if you can get it, 500 ml water 200-4000g dried ground turkey tail, 1 tbale spoon sodium bicarbonate to raise ph to 9, it extracts better, simmer below the boiling point of alcohol i.e 70C, and it will be way more bitter because you pulled a 1000 times more out, but that is what we wanted.

Thank you for the videos. Have you ever grown much room in cedar chips?
Maybe "cedar" means something different in your area, but Juniperus virginiana (eastern redcedar) and so far as I know the true cedars (of Lebanon, Deodar, Atlas, etc) are valued because they are not resistant (& redcedar at least also gives off terpenes [essential oils] that repel clothes moths). If you have that wood, build trunks or clothes cabinets out of it, or something ornamental that can use the pretty (pre UV) color of the wood. Use something else to feed fungi. Cottonwood is a fast growing "trash" species that likes the same wet habitats as redcedar, and I am sure it will at least grow Oysters.
Cedar Chips are often available at HD, Lowe's, etc, because they are fairly rot resistant and mildly attractive. Maybe that motivated the question. Unfortunately once chipped like that, they would be hard to use in woodworking. However you might be able to call your power company [especially in more rural areas where they can't offload the stuff on wastewater treatment plants for composting nor have contracts with municipal parks to use it as playground mulch ] and get mixed woodchips (enough of which would be hardwood in most parts of the US to probably support at least an aggressive oyster species) at very low cost if not free. They have to clear the land underneath power line easements to keep trees out of the wires.

What i mostly did was boil water, and let it cool off after that with mushroom powder in it (like reishi etc.) just like you make a normal tea. So not really boiling for extended period of time. How big is the difference really compared to longer boiling with fine powder?
False Turkey Tail genus is Stereum.
Turkey Tail is really common, I find it all the time.
I don't use it much because most of the specimens I find have holes and little beetles living in it...

Stereum is not toxic.
There are some look-alikes of turkey tail,but as I know,none is poisonous,even if it has not the same strong benefits as the turkey tail

I've heard the wood decomposing ones, the ones that get hard and woody, like Reishi and turkey tail for instance, need longer hot water decoctions than other types of mushrooms. They need the dual process too: both hot water and ethyl alcohol to get the 'good stuff' out.

I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the city. I had a huge tree cut down in my backyard. I asked the guys to cut the trunk into three sections about 2.5ft each. I propped them up on bricks and covered them with a tarp for the winter. I was out doing lawn work this summer and decided to remove the tarp and discovered that one of the log pieces was loaded with Turkey Tail mushrooms. I searched and searched for all the details of the mushroom so I could be absolutely sure and YUP!, they are indeed turkey tails and a lot of them. The pattern that they grow in is so beautiful, but at the same time sets off my Trypophobia. I'll be definitely be harvesting some of them. I'm going to take a sample to a local botanist first (just to be absolutely sure).

Are there any compounds that are extracted by other methods
Lions mane and reishi have compounds that are alcohol extracted and recombined with hot water extract. My herbalist just recommends slow simmer.
@@danielallouche2493 my interest was that there are compounds in chaga that are only available through alcohol extraction and also those that you can derive from cannabis through the same process
