    You people just made a new convert. I found all the growing mushroom indoors intimidating (I did not quite "get" why I had to disinfect everything when Mushrooms have been growing in messy nature for many millions of years.) So growing in the garden is right up my alley. And y'all did a great job of explaining it all.Thank you.

      I can explain. Mushrooms let off billions of spores. The mushrooms play the odds that the spore will find a place where they can out compete bacteria and other fungi. In your house you want mushrooms to colonize the substrate everytime. When you already have a lot nice healthy mycelium contamination is less likely and your mushrooms can take over.

      I haven't grasped the sun requirements and heat tolerance of growing fungi.
      I'm in southern California, zone 10b I believe. The summers can be brutal. But I do have growing space which sees only indirect sunlight year round.

    I have been harvesting wild mushrooms for quite a few years, medicinal & edible. Love them so much. This year, I 've just started growing mushrooms, plus taking an online mushroom growing course, doing a lot of reading & watching of videos.
    I was already excited, but after watching this video, I'm super stoked. This is most definitely going to turn into a community business in the small area I live in, as well as provide me with food while doing something I absolutely love.
    Thanks so much for the video. I am starting with wood chips but will be buying straw bales next week. Can't wait to get all the different growing mediums going at once! Love the laundry basket idea as well. Super cheap & available at the dollar store!

    I used newspaper and cardboard underneath wood chips and compost for years, but within a couple years of gardening as a business, I found that the layers of paper either were quickly eaten by worms, or in the absence of worms they did not decompose easily and stopped water and roots from penetrating the soil. 2 inches or more of mulch will stop all but large seeds. 6 inches or more of compost or a foot of leaves will grow monster vegetables. Wood chips on paths are slow to decompose and stop smaller-seeded weeds until they do.

    Also, an interesting side note is that if you put the cut mushrooms in the sun with the gill side up for a day that they will load up full of Vitamin D. It is a different version than D3 and the body doesn't use it quite as well they say, but none the less...hopefully you found it an interesting fact.

    I love these ideas. Im trying to establish a food forest and that means a lot of mulching. Ive always wondered if you could grow mushrooms in that mulch. So cool! Until then i think its too hot and dry in my region.

      They'll grow UNDER your veggies especially with drip line watering. I have woodchips in my walkways and have wild mushrooms come in and grow on the edges under my brussel sprouts. No idea what kind of mushroom but they're there. And it's been high 70s to mid 90s all summer.

Believe it or not in a couple years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.

    This video made my day! I know what im doing with my footpaths in my garden now! My beds are homemade compost/cardboard/straw and im about to plant them. Im definitely gonna use your method for the footpaths in between. Do you sell spawn for this? Also I'd greatly appreciate it if you made a video on how to innoculate compost piles. It is something I've been wanting to learn for a while now and cant find content on the matter. A tip for gardeners: you can pre soak the cardboard before you lay it down with plain water or compost tea works great! North spore you definitely have me as a subscriber now and I'm glad I found you! ✌&❤ from Aromas California...😊🍄

    This is a great idea! Have you all ever notice any poisonous, look-alike shrooms growing amongst what you’ve inoculated?

    • @NorthSpore
      @NorthSpore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No, though there is certainly the possibility. It's why we emphasize the importance of knowing how to identify the species you're trying to cultivate. We did have some inky cap Coprinus mushrooms growing in our garden over the summer. They can be poisonous if consumed alongside alcohol, but they look nothing like any of the species we were cultivating! The same holds true with cultivating plants- there is always the potential something poisonous will become a weed and grow in your garden, but you probably won't confuse it with your cucumbers!

    • @NorthSpore
      @NorthSpore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      also! the Inky Caps aren't deadly poisonous when consumed with alcohol, but they will make you vomit! They produce the same compound used in drugs to treat alcoholism

    I used a couple of rotten logs scraped some of it, add micelius and then add again the scraped rotten wood and some leaves from my trees you thing that will work. On some I add a little bit of soil also.

    • @NorthSpore

      By micelium, I'm guessing you mean spawn. If that was added to a woody substrate, even if it isn't ideal, it could totally work!

    This was a great video. I believe I will be attempting some new companion planting. My first thoughts about the pathways were concern about trampling most of the fruiting spawn. How well did the paths fruit? Any future videos about cooking and preparing your harvest? You guys put together a nice video. Thanks for sharing.

    • @NorthSpore
      @NorthSpore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Wine Caps in the paths are still bumping. We've gotten a ton of Wine Caps from them. It seems like they choose to grow along the paths edges where they get a little more shade from the plants. The foot traffic on the paths doesn't disturb the mycelium much, but you definitely have to watch where you step when they are growing!

    Thank you so much for this video. Amazing ideas and I loved seeing the results. I would like to proffer an idea. I have found that when mulching young trees, especially transplants, it is best to form the mulch into a ring. Don't short the interior on depth mind you. But the ring, especially at the drip line of little trees, helps to channel and retain moisture directly over the roots. It also makes it very easy to add a weeper hose or drip line ring for easy watering in drier climates. I am so going to try your ideas out.

    wow! that's what I was looking for
    I wonder what I have to do so it will grow in zone 9 (other than guaranteeing proper hydration)

    • @NorthSpore
      @NorthSpore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Try to find your shadiest place, keep your mushroom substrate hydrated by watering frequently, and choose species that do well in warmer climates (pink oysters or Italian oysters are great options)

    • @SuperManning11
      @SuperManning11 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m also in Zone 9 and thought it would not be possible to grow mushrooms here, but this summer I noticed several varieties pop up in different shade areas. The base of a peach tree played host to a giant yellow plate-like mushroom of some kind that was as big as a dinner plate. So now I want to try to grow something I will recognize and be able to eat! Thanks, great video!
