Model Lister [so called] diesel 20cc

- I’ve just got this model running, I was planning on giving it a good long run so I hooked up the water tank but the engine was knocking too much so I’m best to iron out a few more issues first.
Anyway I’m happy that it is at least running which will make fault finding much easier now.
Fuel is 1:1:1 Ether,kero and caster oil
Memory lane. Grew up in central Africa. Every farm seemed to have Listers for water pumps or generators. Beautiful model.
First job I had in the 70’s was working with Lister 3cyl. Diesel engines on 4in. Pumps and generators..electric start or hand crank, loved em......
@@mikemcwhorter2388 Listers had a very unique sound . . sort of 3 to 4 power strokes followed by a lighter sounding interval. Made sheds of grass thatch, concrete foundation as engine mount, 44 gallon diesel drum with a smaller water tank on top for the Lister. They never gave problems.

I've designed and built little engines for 45 years. Mine all run on compressed air. I have built windmills that compress air whenever there's wind, which is always - North Texas.

Does it run slower? These are a slow speed engine design. I built a 3KW generator with a 6/1 and it runs at 650 RPM or about 5 exhaust thumps per second... very comfortable to be around, and you can hold a conversation over it as it chugs away at full load:) beautiful build!

glumpy10 cheers mate, I’ve still got a little way to go to get it running nicely. I was going to give it a good run that day but I shut it down after this video, it was still running a bit too erratic.

How much pressure it makes at TDC,
And how much torque it generates at highest RPM
No idea! This is running on a mixture of caster oil, kero and ether so it doesn’t need the high pressures required if it were to run on diesel.

I have no idea. I have no way of measuring it but it’s not very much. Just enough to drive a small pump or generator.

@@Maxb49 I don’t know, I have a little one here about 80mm long but I’m thinking it’s a bit small. There is a guy on eBay that sells kits, might be better suited. I have his pump that I am yet to machine.

Yes, my dad had old stationeries on the farm that we used to restore and take to rally’s. Some of my models remind me of them, especially this Lister. I have the casting kit here for a Lister junior (petrol) as well.

It uses a modified #5 gas jet, a needle and a spring. The fuel pump pushes the fuel into the side of the needle, into a cavity just above the jet which is blocked off by the needle, a buildup of pressure overcomes the spring compression pushing on the needle then it lifts. It is different to how Find Hansen’s injector works.

Hmm, is it diesel? It sounds like gas engine but maybe it's just me.
It’s running on a mixture of ether, kero and caster oil. It hasn’t got enough compression or a good enough pump and injector to run on true diesel…that’s why it is a “so called diesel”
@@darrenfawcett9912 so ignition is by injection of fuel just like in normal diesel engine or there is spark plug?
@@dymitrnawrocki9926 correct, there is no spark plug. The ether is volatile which helps with ignition.
@@darrenfawcett9912 Interesting, i always thought ignition caused by compression would be detonation just like in regular diesel engine so it would make that specific knocking noise but here even through ignition is caused by compression, the fuel air mixture is not igniting all at once so it burns longer, or at least i assume it is that way because it would explain the sound of the engine. I'm curious if using that fuel in regular diesel engine would give same gas engine sound.
By the way do you still have anzani model engine? The video with it is short but it's really interesting engine is it two stroke? Does it have valves?
