GREAT video! Thank you for your time and effort to share this valuable information to help others. TH-cam was made for videos like this.
I just bought a 2005 4Runner and I'm gradually doing the work to make it mine, upgrading her and getting her ready for her second life. I was contemplating an aftermarket Android head unit for Bluetooth and a backup camera. It was great to see that the Yaris head unit accepts a backup camera.
This upgrade is now on my list. I saved this video in my 4Runner list.
Until then, I bought the Anker ROAV Bluetooth FM transmitter to connect my phone's audio to the car audio system via an FM radio channel, and it also has two USB ports for phone charging. It integrates nicely into the 12V cigarette lighter socket in the center console.

I did everything you did step however the backlighting doesn’t illuminate. The white wire that was left un-spliced in your “little pigtail” 6 pin harness is for backlighting illumination. Had to take everything apart after realizing it wasn’t working and ground it.

    • @tronixster
      @tronixster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tronixster I grounded it to a screw in the back of the radio. All of the radio buttons are to illuminate when you turn on the headlights! That’s what the white wire @18:43 minutes in your six pin harness is for.

@@tronixster Hi, no wiring mixed up Metra says that the balance and fader needs to be set to center before the factory radio was removed. Also, the turn volume should be up 3/4 before shutting off the vehicle WITHOUT shutting off the radio prior. I did that, but no difference, so will try a replacement unit. Interestingly, on Amazon there are quite mixed reviews on whether the fader works or not. Curious what makes the difference....

This is a common misconception and actually isn't the case. From this post: www.toyota-4runner.org/611260-post22.html
"The antenna issue has been discussed quite a bit. The 4Runner has a diversity antenna system - which as best I can tell means that there are two antennas in the vehicle and the factory head unit picked which one had the best signal. I do know that the antenna bundle from the factory harness has two antennas connections (a standard and a smaller one) and a 3rd cord that folks have said is power for an antenna booster.
Going to the aftermarket head unit there are lots of install options available:
      1) Get Y-cable connectors to feed both antenna signals into the single antenna input on the Pioneer headunit
      2) Provide power to the antenna booster and just plug in the larger (standard) antenna connector"

Something about your setup doesn’t add up???????? You have the jbl synthesis tags on your doors and require the adapter yet your OEM installed radio is a non jbl unit and your silver radio bezel is the recessed sr5 model not available on jbl models which would’ve left gaps around your radio. Unless it was different on the 03-05 models. FYI- This mod doesn’t works as well on 06-09 jbl synthesis models. It will require swapping out the silver radio surround shown here and also replacing the jbl beveled edge climate control panel to match the silver surround. I decided to do this mod based on this video not knowing this because it says works on all 4th gens. I know this is unintentional! There is plenty information on the forums about this gaps issue.

Henry, a number of them will work, from a Yaris and Scion. I have both from my project if you are looking for one. I also have all the non-JBL harness items assembled and will sell with the radio.

Here's what you'll need for backup camera setup:

@@tronixster hi and thanks for all your help! i have already ordered all those parts but have no clue where to connect them. i'm thinking maybe i jumped the gun by finishing all the connections in your video and should have waited as maybe the back up cam wires (+ and -) should be tied into the harness for the amp/radio. i guess its not terrible to cut what i have already done and redo those wires.
eta**: for those like me that weren't lucky enough to buy a radio that came with the pig tail attached...can you recommend a harness for the rear speakers. this is the one i bought..i hope it works (i used just the small one)

otherwise, its perfect.....just need that backup cam vid ;)

@@sr9tc let me know if you find a solution for that gap. I have it too. Non JbL stereo is more narrow so there is trim

@@louactor the solution is to get a piece of matte black cardboard. Its a little challenging but doable. For me, not worth it

So I just did this yesterday and now I have a slight hissing noise coming from the speakers regardless if the head unit is powered on (car power is "on"). I did some intial resceach and it might be a ground issue. I guess Ill be running a ground wire from the harness (behind the head unit) to the chasis and see - if not its a ground issue from the amp in the rear of the 4runner. I also saw that it could be the FM antenna as well. Ugh. I'll let you know what I find for others that may run into the same issue.

Sorry man, I didn't have any of these issues. I hope you get it sorted out. Blessings

@@tronixster Well I got it to work. There is a small blue adjustment screw on the Metra box. After some careful tweaking I got it working with no more hissing from the speakers,
