I replaced my head unit on my 05 a year ago and absolutely love it. I had to reinstall it a few times to get things the way I want it. Learned a lot on TH-cam. I never plan to get rid of my 05 4Runner, so I'll just keep updating it a little at a time.
Canadian Gearhead thank you for your content, I was able to find exactly what I was looking for when I watching your videos and looked at your website. 2008 4Runner V8 4WD Shadow Mica. Doug Thorley headers/y-pipe getting install soon!
I did mine several years ago. It wasn't too difficult. I installed a Pioneer AVH-2330NEX. I only wish I had went a little higher in models that provided 2 USB links to the radio. So far, it works like a charm. I put all my music, audio books, and movies on USBs. It would be nice to have 2 usbs, where I could separate my music from audio books. I installed my USB ports on the consul beside the DAC. I placed my mic on the driver side A piller to prevent the mic from shaking. The 2330 has a backup camera option, which I installed. I thought about installing a front mounted camera to the 2330, but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.
Thank you for mentioning "crank up stock stereo". I had the exact same JBL in my 2006 Limited and I didn't do that before I installed the exact same partsa few months ago, all from Crutchfield. Ever since it hasn't gone loud enough so I guess I reinstall the stock unit abd give that a shot. Thanks!
@@CanadianGearhead I'll definitely come back and let you know what I find. Might be a couple weeks since I'm busy getting my track car prepped. Another troubleshooting issue you may mention in your article - normally the Maestro RR will 'see' the parking brake is engaged, but on some 05-07 Tacoma/4Runner models, it will never see it engaged. When this happened to me, the parking brake wire MUST be hardwired directly to the head unit OR a bypass used. Another reason to purchase the bypass from the get-go.
Thanks for the video! Glad to have these now being a 4runner guy haha and I’ve seen the update of the two vehicles as well. I’ll probably being doing something similar in the next couple months
Thanks for this video and the writeup on your website! I bought this exact setup and was able to easily install it with minimal issues. I made a rookie mistake of not fully following the Maestro diagram and forgot to plug in the data cable, so none of my steering wheel controls nor the OBD2 stuff were working. Had to pull it all apart again and plug in that 1 wire. But everything is good to go and working great now!
@richard Justice I looked up the 04 4runner on the idatalink maestro rr website and said its not supported thus meaning the OBD2 readings wouldn't be supported correct?? If you have yours working that would be awesome! Glad to hear your install is working well man!!
I have a 3 year old, Pioneer (sans Carplay/AA) in my 03 Limited. I may upgrade to this unit this Xmas so thanks. Btw, in order to make all the JBL speakers work (10 of them), you need to purchase the Metra TYTO-01 JBL Amplifier Interface Harness of Amazon. It can also be super finicky with some of the functions on your head unit. Mine for example, wouldn't allow me to add a Bluetooth until it was professionally rewired. Lastly, if you upgrade the speakers, the JBL amp runs at 2-3ohms. CDT audio has a great 2ohm package set that is plug and play with some front 6.5 speaker adapters. Congrats!
It's crazy how many wires goes into head units and adding even more with something like the maestro box. I just swapped mine out myself and it is 90 percent wire, 10 percent head unit. I bet if there was a standard, everyone of the wires and whatever they control could be put into one usb c data cable, minus the speaker outs themselves.
I did a very similar setup a few months ago, and got rid of the Metra dash kit, which was terrible. Very bad fitment and flimsy. I replaced it with the Scosche TA2079B dash kit which fits perfectly.
Another modification that you could consider is adding the 'smokers kit' Toyota 74110-35010-B0. Looks waay better that what comes stock and it has two chargers.
I was really hoping to see some of the Maestro capabilities. I have a 2007 I'm about ready to do this to. I like the mic placement but I think I would prefer the USB to be near the DAC button in the center console. I have some blanks there.
For the red light up buttons on the side, can you make those whatever color you want? I see other 2660 nex units are advertised them being blue. I need them to be green to match my vehicle's lighting
Do you like having the maestro thing that shows some specs? Ive thought about doing this if and when I upgrade my 4th gens radio. Awesome video! Will definitely reference when I do mine
I find the gauges more of a novelty thing that are fun to play with but not really helpful. The biggest thing the Maestro offers aside from the steering wheel controls is the ability to scan and clear diagnostic codes from a check engine light. I can check the code and turn the light back off without even getting off the highway
Thanks for the video. Quick question: I had this receiver professionally installed and there is a hissing/static sound that can be heard at low volume levels. Per other TH-cam videos, that type of noise usually happens due to bad grounding. Did you experience any unwanted noise and if so, how did you get rid of it?
