      I think that some interesting demons would be Hercules (for some reason SMT is quite lacking when it comes to greek lore, something compensated by Persona) Belobog, to compensate for his brother already being there, Mammon, the only demon lord who hasn't made an appearance yet and finally Durga, the Hindu Goddess of war (it would be nice if she was obtained fusing Kali and Parvati, respectively her peaceful and wrathful incarnations). Another nice addition would be other minor mythical beings, like giants, elves, cyclopes and the likes, since SMT is full of big important names, but it does sound a bit weird when some rookie summoner is already owning big important names instead of "everyday" monsters.

      Varcolac would be interesting vampire/werewolf that drinks the moon's blood, causing the blood moon or something like that. I still don't really get it but it sounds interesting.
      Kumbhakarna. We have Indrajit and Ravana so I think it should be fitting for third famous antagonist from Ramayana to make an appearance

    Could you perhaps make this an ongoing series? There’s a lot of mythological and historical figures that really should be in SMT. Perhaps you could take viewer suggestions and go deeper into how they would work in game (Like their weaknesses and what spells they would learn).

    Not a demon, but cmon, an appearance of King Solomon the wise, the original devil summoner, is such a perfect fit im actually quite surprised he hasn’t made a direct appearance in SMT yet (to the extend of my knowledge).
    Bet he could make a great boss for a potential chaos alignment route, or a powerful ally during a law route in a future SMT game.

    To this day I'm amazed on how there's zero Brazilian mythology in mainline SMT games. There's so much potential in the folklore and indigenous deities here there's honestly no reason for the only representation so far is Caipora (localized "Kibra" for some reason) in DemiKids. Some great examples I'd add would be:
    - Boitatá, a giant flaming serpent covered with eyes, usually depicted as the protector of forests, chasing and killing those that try to start fires;
    - Teju Jagua/Teiú-iaguá, basically a "Brazilian Hydra", with seven canine heads coming out of a lizard-like body, said to be the god of caves and lakes in Tupi-Guarani culture;
    - Corpo-Seco (lit. "Dry Corpse"), the undying carcass of a man so rotten that, when he died, his soul was refused by both heaven and hell, and the earth spat out his body when he was buried, forcing him to aimlessly wander at night;
    - Tupã/Tupan, a Tupi-Guarani god of thunder;
    - Curupira, a "jungle demon" that looks like a young redhead man with backwards feet, said to be responsible for making hunters and poachers go missing, tricking them with his backwards footprints, illusions and whistles;
    As well as historical and literary figures, like Lampião, Macunaíma, Tiradentes, etc.
    There's just way too many to put as just a TH-cam comment tbh.
    It's got some insane potential for not just SMT, but any other mythology-themed series as well, and I'm pretty sure there's many other cultures that are just as overlooked because they aren't as well-known as the "big names" in that area.

      Oh yeah and also the Headless Mule (Mula-sem-cabeça), a mule without a head and flames spitting out of it's neck, it is said to be the cursed ghost of a woman who had an affair with a priest. I can imagine this being a Haunt with a mix of fire and physical skills;
      And also the Saci Perere, a black one legged boy that summons whirlwinds and plays pranks on farmers by stealing random items or spoiling their milk, it could be a high agility ailment inducing Jirae demon with force based attacks.

    I have always loved Wu Kong, and would love to see more demons based on either Journey to the West or other Asian literature. Personally, seeing Zhu Bajie would be a really nice touch, seeing as how he inspired Ganon in the original Legend of Zelda; I would love to almost see a MegaTen take on Ganon's origins, if that makes any sense. However, and this is kinda obvious, I think that Horkos fits that bill really well, especially in Strange Journey. Sure, Horkos isn't Zhu Bajie, but I can see how they may've avoided another gluttonous pig demon being added. Nevertheless, my little pipe dream is always held on. I just feel Wu Kong deserves a chance to interact with other Journey to the West inspired characters. I always love when demons from specific folklore, religion, or mythology interact, so it'd be cool to see it taken even further.
    Awesome video, Tony!! Hopefully these demons can appear one day, and I hope you can make more videos like these. I always love this aspect of the MegaTen community, so it's really nice to learn about new things while sharing ideas with others.

      It's so weird that I've actually seen Amy used before. There's a supervillain in comics called Sabbac whose whole gimmick is every letter of his name corrospond to a different demon, with one of the A's being for Amy, who gives him the power of flight. Such an esoteric reference compared to all the other demons who are pretty well known.

    Personally i would like to see more South American demons, specially Chilean ones, some of them are so bizarre, perfect for SMT, like El Trauco, an incubus like creature from Chiloe (an southern chilean island, source of most chilean myths), he is the son of Cai-Cai Vilu, a sea serpent that hates humanity, El Trauco has the usual stuff for an incubus, however, he has an interesting tactic, he (and i'm not making anything up) defecates in the entrances of the woman's houses as an advice of his coming, oh, and he is married to La Fiura, his daughter.
    However, my favorite (because it's so bizarre) is La Mesa de Parinacota (Parinacota's Table), a table that could "go for night walks" and if it did, it announced the death of a local resident, the funny thing is that the the people, instead of doing what would be done in these stories (religious ceremonies, magic rituals, that kind of things) to control the table, they simply tied it to a pillar of a church, so it couldn't go for walk

    Great video! Samson is such an interesting character and would make for a great boss. It would be cool if he looses hair as the fight goes on or when the fight ends he becomes bald.
    As a Brazilian, I would like to suggest some being from Tupi folklore that could be interesting demons.
    The first one is Curupira, the name means scabies skin or small child in Tupi. He is commonly depicted as an dwarf or a child with red hair and his most notable characteristic is his foot, that is backwards. He usually pursues anyone that came to cause harm to the forests and mostly uses psychological warfare to make the hunters and lumberjacks lost in the woods.
    The second mythological creature is Boitata, which means fire sanke in Tupi. As the name suggests, it is a fire snake whose eyes are balls of light. In the myths, it attacks anyone who enter the forest by night or who sets forest on fire (a common method that the natives used to clear the forest for agriculture), setting those people on fire. Some say that even gaze at Boitata cause insanity.
    The last being is Saci or Saci Perere, it is not clear what Saci means, but Perere mean “one that hops” in Tupi. He is usually depicted as a dark skinned one legged youngster wearing a red cap and smoking a pipe (the last one is speculated as an african influence on the mythos) that usually engaged on pranks like knotting animals hair, setting animals free, spoiling food and hiding children toys (any bad luck event that could happen can be attributed to a Saci), but also causes dust devils. He could be enslaved by taking his cap or trapped by catching the dust devil on a bottle.

    I don't _think_ any of these are in SMT, but I could be wrong; I'm a bit new to the series. Going by the usage of "demon" in SMT:
    • *Unktehila (Lakota)* - Lakota mythology's version of the horned water serpent found in many Algonquian cultures, inspired by misinterpretations of mammoth bones. In some tellings, it's said to be as long as a hundred horses and covered in impenetrable scales made of mica. Looking directly at Unktehila would make a mortal go blind, then go mad, and then die a day later. Unktehila had two weaknesses: its crystalline heart, located behind the seventh in a row of spots running down from its head, and lightning, the weapon of its eternal enemies.
    • *Kiwakwe (Abenaki)* - One of the many various cannibalistic giants found in various mythologies around the Great Lakes, like the Wendigo and the Stonecoat. Originally human, a kiwakwe is born when someone commits a truly heinous and unforgivable act, such as cannibalism or withholding food from a starving person. Their callousness turns their heart to ice and transforms them into a man-eating sorcerer. A kiwakwe is so maddeningly ravenous that it will eat its own lips, leaving only bloody shreds around its exposed teeth.
    • *Kokyangwuhti (Hopi)* - "Spider woman/spider grandmother," the creator goddess of Hopi mythology. Although she's typically depicted as extremely kind and powerful, she will often hold off on directly solving problems. Instead, in a few stories, she accompanies the hero on his quest in the form of a tiny spider who hides in his ear, offering him advice on how to solve problems peacefully while bewildering and humiliating his enemies.
    • *Virabhadra (Hindu)* - A wrathful aspect of Shiva, created in his rage and grief following the death of Sati. Virabhadra is described as "a being like the fire of fate…a mighty male and lord, destroyer of the universe," with a thousand heads and a thousand weapons. Fire streams from his hair, his tongue is lightning, and four tusks protrude from his mouth. After Shiva tasks him with despoiling the sacrifice of Daksha, Virabhadra spews an army of demigods from the pores of his skin, and his rampage shakes mountains and darkens the sun.
    • *Hunahpu & Xbalanque (K'iche' Maya)* - The heroic twins of Maya mythology. Their adventures comprise the oldest Maya story to have been preserved in its entirety, as told in the Popol Vuh. Throughout their story, the twins use their skill and cunning to slay arrogant gods, like the tyrant Seven Macaw and his sons, before braving the challenges presented by the gods of the underworld and defeating them in a ritualistic ballgame.

  • @ophidianmind333
    @ophidianmind333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Considering that Shiva is one of my favorite SMT characters as well as religious figures, I would like to see his aspect as Bhairava (perhaps his most fierce manifestation) portrayed in SMT, especially since Parvati's aspect as Kali has already been portrayed. It would also be interesting to see a series return of the Ardhanarishvara, which is Shiva and Parvati united as a single being. A lot of Hindu deities are even more interesting in their Tantric portrayals and I'd like to see SMT delve into that.
    Another demon I'd like to see in SMT is the titular character from Mikhail Lermontov's poem The Demon. The demon in this poem falls in love with a human woman and manipulates himself into her life, only for his kiss to be poisonous to his beloved, killing her. There has already been a precedent set for including literary characters such as Hanns Heinz Ewers' Alraune or Nyarlathotep from Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, so a character from poetry shouldn't be a stretch for SMT.

    I still waiting for SMT have a Brazilian demom, to be more specific, I want the Curupira, he's describe as a man who's responsible to protect the florest and the animal.
    He has a fiery hair, always carrying a spear, sometimes he's riding on a boar and the most noticeable characteristic about this creature is he's feet, they are turned to the opposite side.
    This last feature is what make this folklore creature so special, if anyone who is hunting him will probably follow he's footprints, but because of he's feet if the Curupira is heading to the north the hunter will think he goes to the south, making him to go to the wrong direction, and I think this is pretty genius.
    To be honest I don't know what kinda role he can have on SMT and Persona, but I still think he can be the perfect candidate to be the first Brazilian demom.

  • @NintendanGX
    @NintendanGX ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is easily one of my favourite topics regarding SMT. Here are some of my picks so far, all of them being of Japanese origin.
    1. Dokuganryu
    As the name suggests (literally meaning One-eyed Dragon), this would be the personification of Masamune Date, the most powerful warlord of the north during Japan's warring states period. Masamune is an iconic samurai in his own right, who managed to go from a depressed child with smallpocks in his right eye, to a stalwart leader who weathered the storms of war and ensured his clan's survival long after the Sengoku period had ended. His enemies would fear him as the One-eyed Dragon, and he managed to avenge his father's death by annihilating the Hatakeyama clan.
    His portrayal in SMT would be of a samurai whose features are obscured in darkness, with one glowing red eye glaring at his enemies, and his iconic crescent-moon shining brightly on his kabuto helmet. He would emit the frightening aura of a dragon with every attack, and he would have an affinity for physical attacks, with Zio being his magic trait. His unique skill would be Wrath of Oshuu, a physical-based electric attack that ignores resistance and targets all foes. A river of blood and floating samurai corpses washes over his enemies (reminiscent of his slaughtering of the Hatakeyama), with Dokuganryu and ghosts of his allies all charging through the river on horseback, before transforming into the apparition of a blue dragon that then crashes down onto the enemies like a lightning bolt.
    2. Fujin & Raijin
    I'm honestly surprised these two haven't already made an appearance in the series, given how iconic they are. In Shinto religion, Fujin and Raijin are the god of Wind and Lightning respectively, and sons of Izanami after she'd died and entered Yomi. When Izanagi ran from her and returned from Yomi, Izanami sent many demons and deities to capture him and bring him back. Izanagi had closed the entrance to Yomi with a boulder, but some of his pursuers managed to slip through the cracks, including Fujin and his brother Raijin.
    Fujin carries a bag of winds over his shoulders, while his brother Raijin floats on a cloud and causes lightning to strike by beating his rotating den-den daiko drums.
    In-game, they could be a duo bossfight, each weak to the other's affinity, and their unique skills would have them using their respective weapons.
    3. Suijin
    In Shinto religion, Suijin is the Benevolent God of Water. Not much is known about him, but fishermen would often pray to him, and it is said he would grant them his protection as they fished across the sea. His dominion over water includes waterfalls and rivers, and Japanese merfolk (kappa and water dragons included) are often considered to be associated with Suijin.
    Given how mysterious yet prominent Tsukiyomi is in Japanese fiction, I think it would be interesting to see what Atlus could do with another mysterious Shinto god such as Suijin. Aside from water being my favourite element, I think Suijin, whilst keeping faithful to his known description, could provide for an interesting character in the story, and possibly a Neutral representative whose priority is the safety of his countrymen, only aiding the protagonist if they share his goal.
    As a water deity, he would naturally have an affinity for Bufu magic, and favour magic above physical strength. Appearance-wise, he'd wear white and blue robes evocative of his time, and have long, black hair that occasionally glows blue and flows as if underwater. He would take a human appearance, but in place of legs, have a long, scaly tail akin to a divine serpant. His unique skill would be a powerful ice magic that targets a single enemy, and heals the entire party based on the amount of damage dealt.

    I have a suggestion: Roko’s Basilisk. A demon made by humans in their hubris. An AI so powerful and with a strict moral code to punish evil. However, it considers the very act of preventing its coming about evil. Thus, it creates recreations of all such people (clones?) and tortures them for eternity.

    The one I'd like to see the most is Herschel of Ostropol. He's a famous trickster of Ashkenazi folklore, whose stories mostly follow the formula of rich people are mean to Herschel and/or the Jews -> Herschel humiliates the rich people in thematically appropriate ways. In terms of design, I might be biased, but the story I was told the most of regarding Herschel was the hungry clothes (Herschel isn't allowed into a feast because he's wearing rags, he buys some new clothes, and when he's immediately let in because of his luxurious clothes, he stuffs all the food In his pockets and leaves) so I imagine a tiny old man's head wearing a suit jacket and dress pants, but instead of a body there's a giant gaping mouth...or something like that.
    Another one I'd like to see is Karna from the Mahabharata, the illegitimate eldest son of Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, and the sun god Surya. In terms of design, there's ample fodder. Karna was born with a special set of earrings and armor, he has solar connections, and he died because his chariot broke due to a curse laid upon him.

    Ok, so here is my list, with brazilian mythological creatures:
    Boitatá: Boitatá is a fire snake that protects the fields from the men who promote arson. In legend, the boitatá can also transform itself into a burning log to kill the men who promote it.
    Capelobo: It can emit frightening sounds (loud screams), this monster feeds on dogs and cats, especially those that have just been born. It also attacks hunters, killing them and drinking their victims' blood.
    Encouraçado: It is an invincible vampire, it feeds on any type of person, elderly, adult, teenager or child. He can also hypnotize his victims.
    Anhangá: In Brazilian myths, the Anhangá was a powerful spirit that protected the forests, rivers and wild animals. It usually appeared as a huge deer, white in color.
    Jaci: Jaci, in Tupi-Guarani mythology is the goddess of the Moon, the protector of plants, lovers and reproduction. She was raised by Tupã and is the sister of Guaraci.
    Guaraci: Guaraci, Quaraci, Coaraci or Coraci in Tupi-Guarani mythology is the representation of the Sun, sometimes understood as the one who gives life and creator of all living beings, just as the Sun is important in biologic processes.
    Tupã: He was created by Nhanderuvuçú, and is responsible for controlling the weather, climate and winds.
    Iara: In legends, Iara is portrayed as a beautiful woman, who attracted men with her beauty and voice. She is also the water goddess.
    And there's a lot more of creatures, but it would take a eternity to list them here and translate everything to English.

    In Buddhist religion, Angulimala (Pali for "finger necklace") was a cruel brigand who murdered people and chopped off one of their fingers as part of an assignment by his teacher to collect one thousand fingers to finish his studies, which was actually set up by jealous pupils that wanted to get rid of him, unbeknownst to him. On his would-be 1000th kill, he came close to killing his mother, but changed his mind and went after Gautama Buddha (aka Sakya from P2), who was passing by instead. Despite the Buddha simply strolling, no matter how rapidly he pursued Sakya, he was unable to catch up with his target until he eventually tires out (The Buddha used his powers to expands the earth on which they stand to keep Angulimala at a distance, so Angulimala was basically running in places).
    This bewilders Angulimala so much that he calls to the Buddha to stop. The Buddha then says that he himself has already stopped, and that it is Angulimala who should stop. Angulimala asks for further explanation, after which the Buddha says that a good monk should control his desires (The Buddha has long since been freed from materialistic desire, while Angulimala is still hunting people so that he could graduate from his studies). Angulimala, impressed by the Buddha's courage and struck with guilt about what he has done, declares himself converted after listening to Buddha's teachings and vows to cease his life as a brigand and joins the Buddhist monastic order.
    As a monk, he is seen as a "patron saint" of childbirth after helping a woman in difficult labor give birth with his Sacca-kiriya (solemn declaration of truth), changing from a murderer to a person seen to ensure safe childbirth. This transformation helps him to find peace, even when old karma came around in the form of a resentful attacking him for taking away their loved ones, which he endure with equanimity, knowing that it is inevitable and not even Buddha can stop it from occuring. Angulimala is an example of a person who, after having done much evil, still has a possibility to change for the better that is rare to find nowadays in the world.

    Doctor Omega from the 1906 H.G Wells-inspired French novel by Arnould Galopin would make for a neat Demon/Shadow/Persona. The book’s about a guy named Denis Borel going on an adventure to Mars with his mysterious inventor neighbour known only as Doctor Omega in a travelling machine he invented and encountering reptilian creatures along the way.
    If that sounds familiar to you, then you probably have through Doctor Who. A BBC TV series that began in 1963 featuring a similar premise and the First Doctor played by William Hartnell is eerily like Doctor Omega down to his physical appearance in the illustrations.
    When the novel was rediscovered in 2003 by a Whovian historian, debates have sprung up on wether or not the novel had any actual influence in the creation of Doctor Who including bits from the book that would appear in the show itself beyond the unlikely coincidence of the whole thing due to the book’s relative obscurity. Additionally, the book itself wasn’t exported outside of France in translated form until 2003 on Doctor Who’s 40th Anniversary.
    Seeing as it predated the TV by five and a half decades along with the fact it existed before the copyright extension, Doctor Omega is in the public domain and thus Atlus could use him if they want to have their equivalent to the BBC’s The Doctor in their games without outright infringing on their property as long as they don’t lean too much on the BBC created elements akin to the Lupin III legal situation a few decades ago.
    Plus, the visual of a character summoning a mythological/literary figure with a resemblance to William Hartnell is too rich to pass up on.

    As a another brazilian I really wish we had more representation like the return of Caipora (also know as Kibra), the Headless Mule just like others said but i want to go a bit beyond that:
    Pombero, also know as El Pombeiro, Pyragué (Hairy Foot), Karaí pyhare (Lord of the night) and Kuarahy Jára (Owner of the sun) is a Guarani mythological creature know in Paraguay, southern Brazil, and the northern Argentinean coast, is responsible for making sure that the fauna and flora are not threatened, that trees are not cut down, and that only animals that will serve as food for the families are sacrificed. It is common for communities to ask Pombero to take care of the crops and to protect the animals. In exchange, they offer him tobacco and honey. But this doesn't happen voluntarily. If a family forgets, he wreaks havoc in their home and is capable of leaving his victim voiceless, could take the Judgment Arcana or have a side quest to him specifically in any SMT game.
    Teju Jagua, the first of the seven legendary monsters*, is the god of caves, grottos, and lakes. He crawls like a lizard and eats fruit and honey. He is described as a giant lizard, with seven dog heads (or one wolf head). He has embedded in the top of his head a carbuncle stone. Its main ability is to shoot flames from its eyes. Not sure which arcana but could be treat as a Boss monster like Hydra was.
    Boca de Ouro is a mysterious being who, under the Bohemian garb, hides a mixture of zombie, ghost, and demon. It is a haunting whose first appearances date back to the early 20th century, he approaches lonely walkers wandering the deserted streets and always asks these unsuspecting people for fire. Whether or not he has a match (or lighter) to offer, the victim is startled when he realizes that the mysterious bohemian has the rotting face of a rotting corpse and exudes a strong smell of sulfur. Either Death or Devil arcana, could be a normal enemy in SMT.
    Iemanjá or Yemanjá is African goddes, mother of fish, deity of fertility, maternity, and of river waters. Protectress of children and the elderly. Patroness of fishermen, that gained a strong influence in Brazilian popular culture become the most popular Orisha - due to the african slaves that were brought in Brazil, also know as Dona Janaina, the main mythological accounts of Yemanjá unfold with the primordial orixás of the Yoruba creation of the world. In the second half of the 20th century a consensus emerged among authors that Yemanja is the daughter of the sovereign deity of the seas and oceans Olocum (the latter a female deity in Ifé and male in Benin), and this link is celebrated in the city of Ifé, considered the cradle of Yoruba civilization. Also know in Cuba.
    Urumina or Uruminas (plural) are fairies with very dark eyes without pupils that would have come from Japan to the Brazilian Amazon in a rainy period by pure chance, it is said that the first of them has the name of Udoka, it would be a kind of supreme mother of them all, the name of all always begins with the vowel U, in General doesn't have much information about these fairies, but it is said that they can fulfill a wish if the person does something good for nature, such as planting a tree, throwing garbage in the right place, and other things like that.
    * The seven legenday monsters are actually the seven children of Kerana (daughter of Maragatu and Tau (presonification spirit of evil), they had seven children, who were cursed by the great goddess Araci, and all but one were born as horrible monsters each one rulling over certain elements or , I'd love go over more of this but it would turn this coment into a essay.

    I also think Sif, being a goddess of fertility and of the hearth would be a great add on as well. Being known for her luscious lochs of golden hair, I feel like she would make a great appearance in a future persona game under the empress arcana.

    Only recently did SMT5 have a Baltic mythological demon called 'Aitvaras', which I would like to see more Estonian, Lithuanian, Finnish, Siberian, etc. Mythological demons in SMT, some of them like Ukko, Ilmatar and so on, are Greek-like Gods, though more so presentations of aspects of things like thunder, harvest or the wind.
    Ilmatar is the Goddess of the Wind, and also birthed the world alongside with her child. The world came to be, as a great goose, eagle, etc. Asked to lay their eggs upon her body, which burned in her skin and accepted. The eggs eventually fell or hatched, and with it's cracks, came the sea, the land, the stars, natural forces like iron, fire, etc.
    Though besides gods, there are various persons mentioned in old poems of Kalevala. Some close to being demi-gods or old 'heroes' of sorts. This is also not to mention of nature spirits or 'gnomes', representing things like your land, house, water, etc. Though one common spirit-like being around those regions, is of a 'family guardian' of sorts, or the dead spirit of your relative or the one that resided in the house. In some Siberian tribes, they constructed and worshipped representation of those spirits, as dolls made in their appearance. And in-general, dead were greatly mourned for and was a ritual in itself.

    • @rokka7188
      @rokka7188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's also animal-like mythological creatures, though bears were in-general greatly worshipped within those areas and around Ainu as well. There were rituals and so on when hunting them, sometimes frequently with a spear even.
      Also the 'iron eagle/hawk' in Finnish mythology, suppose to be a giant bird of made iron and fire as well. With it's back, it carries 1000 soldiers, made of steel/iron as well.
      Not to mention 'Swan of Tuonela', which is a sort of a guardian for the river of the dead, which if touched or harmed, the person would have their body entirely torn apart.
