Today we’ll be going over all the fiends of Nocturne. The Skeletal figures, shown to be immensely powerful and representing the apocalypse itself. Many know of the horseman of the apocalypse, trumpeter, and maybe even Mother Harlot, but how many know of the biblical lore behind them? This video will be all about the Book of Revelation, the final book of the bible and the text that shows the end of days. Pretty heavy stuff, but extremely interesting and worth studying. There is a lot to talk about with these figures and what they mean for humanity’s future. Blessed are those who read out the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it. Let’s learn about the end times together, shall we? Shin megami tensei lore even as far back as the third game in the series, nocturne has an immense wealth of lore to dive into. From matador and daisoujou to mother harlot and the four horsemen of the apocalypse, they are all interesting and worth going over in today's smt lore video. I've been cover a lot of biblical demons and nocturne was the perfect fit for the series with the entire game focusing on what could be the end times spoken of in revelation. Along with it comes the myriad demons associated with them, like the four horsemen and mother harlot as stated before, but some other interesting ones as well, like trumpeter, daisoujou and matador. This smt lore is going back to the format of previous videos with the smt lore of smt nocturne. If the biblical talk of the previous videos was too much, this smt lore will go deep into spanish and east asian culture with matador lore and daisoujou lore, before we get into the biblical heavy hitters of the four horsemen lore and mother harlot lore. With shin megami tensei being such an amazing wealth of topics to go over I still have a ton more to go, but the lore of smt nocturne was not something I could overlook for much longer as nocturne has some of the most interesting major bosses and narrative as a whole. It's funny how the Fiends go from a Matador, a monk, Ghost Rider, and then the horsemen of the apocalypse, the harlot of the bible, and the trumpeter of the end times. It went from "Eh, that's creepy", to "WOW, WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!"

Daisoujou does have skin. If you notice his bones are not stark white like the others, they are a graying brown, like mummified skin clinging to the bone.
Mother Harlot is such a good design, my girlfriend who doesn't even play SMT name-dropped it as her favorite demon when she was watching me play SMT V.

My favorite has to be Matador. Just because I'm Spanish? Yeah. It's quite hilarious seeing a bullfighter being a boss in a JRPG, but when you're laughing thinking you're fighting Morante or José Tomás (spanish bullfighters), he destroys you because you were too busy laughing at him. Also, it's my favorite Nocturne boss gameplay-wise.
As a Sevillana, I really laughed when I was him use 'Andalucia' (and when I hear english speakers pronounce it, anduhlusea)
As a granadian, I can only love Matador. He's so rad, I rush to get him in my party.
Matador's my favorite. He's powerful, well designed, and has excellent mannerisms for a boss. Whether he's hamming it up in pre battle foreplay or annoying you with Red Capote and Dekunda, he's excellent.

This video made me realize that the 7th fiend trumpeter signals the end times, and defeating trumpeter gives you the ability to complete the true ending and end the reign of kagatsuchi. Atlus' attention to detail is incredible

I always associated Hell Biker as a reference to Marvel's Ghost Rider, who takes inspiration from the wild west story of a rider who collects the souls of the damned. This story also draws inspiration from various stories of waves of ghosts (In particular the Wild Hunt)
After hearing Trumpeter lore it make sense when you fight him in SMT4 Apocalypse you have to fight a hordes of 7 Trumpeter instead of 1 like usual
Mother Harlot is Babalon one of the main deities in Thelema, she is the culmination of feminine energy, love, sexual energy and mother of all.

Just a little note. Matar is the word the means "to kill" in Spanish. So yes it's technically derivative of the Latin word, but Matador is also the Spanish word for killer :)

A clarifying note: matador means "he who kills", but in a neutral sense, while someone who kills as in the crime is an "asesino" (from the same root as "assassin") or a "homicida" (he who commits homicide). You can be a "matador de toros" (bull killer) or a "matador de pollos" ( chicken killer), but for men it would be more appropiate to say "asesino de hombres" rather than "matador" (through it is correct)
Trumpeter is my favorite by far, I love when you fight the fiends in Strange Journey, because his encounter is random, they are insanely strong, they can wipe your entire party in one hit, and the most amazing fact, is that in Strange Journey, the first time you encounter a demon, you can only see it in the form of some blue floating thing, but with the fiends, you see them in his true form.

It always bothered me that people recognize the horseman of conquest as the horseman of pestilence despite pestilence being a duty given to the horseman of death
Absolutely agree. I suppose it was due to some later interpretations in books are art that attributed Pestilence to him as they aren't explicitly named. Oh well, I hope the video cleared some things up for people
I would say that's because there is already horseman of war so conquest feels kind of redundant.
Well, if pestilence can be attributed to pale rider, than conquest can be attributed to red rider. War and conquest go hand in hand, after all. Doesn't make any more sense than pestilence being it's own thing.
@@ragvald8835 conquest does not necessarily have to be through violent means, it can be through political means as well, and in revelations it could be a more spiritual military conquest rather than the kind war would propagate

Trumpeter has always been my favorite as he usually has luster candy/heat riser + deblitate. Also I've finally gotten smt strange journey and plan to play it once I finish smtv. Lahmu is such a bitch to fight on hard at lvl 31.
Mother Harlot’s probably my favorite of the bunch too. She was also the figure in this video I knew the least about (save Hell Biker).
I've always found it interesting how Trumpeter signified the end of times by way of sounding its horn the same way Heimdallr would blow Gjallarhorn to begin Ragnarok
My favorite of the friends is the black rider. To bring death through starvation of both the body through famine and the spirit through wine and oils. He denies your needs while.indulging your desires. The most insideous of the bunch.

I think if there's any specific thing of demons I'd like to see you discuss the lore of it's the Ars Goetia demons. I just finished SMTV recently and I love the designs for each Goetia demon I ran into like Forneus, Flauros, and even Amon.
I think matador and daisijou are my favorite. Matador just looks really cool and the lore behind daisijou is insane

Love this series! I've been wanting a website/channel that just explains of the SMT's lore and relevance to real-world religions and mythologies. This scratches that itch perfectly! Hope you do eventually do videos on other mythologies besides biblical stuff in the future

There's definitely some Kamen Rider and Ghost Rider references with the Hell Biker design. He also talks like Hulk Hogan in the HD remaster.

I think the Hell Biker is a reference to Ghost Rider. A popular marvel character who punishes the wicked and is powered by a hellish entity known as the spirit of vengeance.
The design of the demon is yeah I bet, the actual lore is supposed to be that of a Hell's Angel as stated by the artist
Man, I wish I learned more about the book of Revelation when my family was religious. Way more interesting than most of the stuff that I was forced to learn about.

One thing I read once spoke of how we ended up bastardizing War. We turned it from a thing to cause only sorrow to a thing that pushes our development to the next level. It goes into how practically every current invention we have had some connection to a wartime effort. I only say this as I found it interesting to think that war has caused any good. Though I fail to see how any recent ones have done so. Maybe we finally are at a point of no longer needing wars to push inovation
As a newcomer to the Jrpg genre and admirer of mythology, I am mind blown by the sheer depth and style these series has to offer. Reiterating not just the well known mythical figures but the more obscure ones as well, and in such a unique way is what made me fall in love with Persona/Smt series.
Mother Harlot is also my favorite. Although the trumpeter always has a special place in my heart because he was one of my besties in Persona 4 Golden

An interesting little thing that makes me think it’s also a nod to the first Horseman being interpreted as Jesus.
He has a Light skill called God’s Arrow that has a 100% chance to kill whoever it targets if they don’t null or repel Light attacks. And he’s programmed to target whoever ISN’T immune.He also never uses the attack if everyone IS immune as well.
He also has a unique fire attack that I believed is also possessed by Uriel called Prominence. Further signifying a connection to the angels.
I’ve been trying to have all the fiends in my SMT 3 and SMT V games, but it’s a bear to do! They’re all so cool though but imagine if we had Demi-Fiend with all the Amala Fiends (I call them this because Alice is also of the fiend race, and there might be others as well and also because it makes them seem special) VS all the Persona MCs. They would probably get OWNED (the Persona MCs not Demi-Fiend)!!
More people expressed interest in the other fiends than I imagined so I hope I can find a way to talk about them at some point too

I dunno if you're interested, but there's more to Hell's Biker than just being a parody of Hell's Angels. Each Fiend reprents a herald of death, the way this is symbolized in Hell's Biker can be best seen in SMTIII. During the 1970/80s there was a huge Satanic scare, with one of the victims of this being bikers. With the popularity of bikes rising among counter cultures, gangs of bikers became feared as violent Satanists, and the sound of bikes in the distance became a symbol of coming doom. Exploitation film makers noticed this, and it managed to permeate through society due to movies involving gangs of mad, murderous bikers. Pretty soon the sound of bikes would lead to panicked calls to the police as people thought death was coming.
Very interesting, I may have glossed over Hell Biker mostly for a joke, but there really is a lot to talk about in regards to that figure. I just don't want to risk a visit to my house lol
@@Tony4You You'd more likely be visited by their lawyers, as Hell's Angels is copy right protected now they're a big business. The irony of that counter culture ending up a corporation is pretty funny, but that's likely why they had to change the name from Hell's Angel in future games. :p
Sorry for being late, my favorite of the fiends is the Trumpter. It was great to learn about the non Christian fiends, unfortunately considering their status as super bosses they don't really play that much of a role in the story besides gate locking progression sometimes.

Would be nice if you could do a follow-up with the non-Nocturne fiends. Chemtrail is pretty silly, but David appears as a fiend in several games, and isn't immediately obvious why he's just named "David."
