- I'm sure you've heard of Shin Megami Tensei. You might have even played one of the games. Nocturne, Strange Journey, IV, IV Apocalypse, hell maybe even the iOS port of SMT1. But out of all the mainline games, I bet I know exactly which entry has been played the least by the western fanbase.
That entry is NINE, but Shin Megami Tensei 2 comes Third.

To me, the main selling point of SMT II is that it's probably the best out of the Super Famicom Trilogy, particularly because of the QoL improvements (*cough* map *cough*) compared to the first game. That's just me though.

You know what's terrible is the amount of backtracking in SMT2! Though the different routes in it are very interesting! EDIT: You always gotta make sure you give back the invisibility robe you get from the goddess who was bathing for a bonus, don't be mean and steal people's clothes who are bathing 😅
Smt 2 is my favorite game of all time. I am so glad that somebody is willing to talk about it.
this is my favourite smt game. the music slaps, the story is miles ahead smt 1 and it's just right on the difficulty sense. sometimes it's a bit hard to figure out what to do but otherwise it's awesome.

SMT II is pretty awesome and really different in a lot of ways compared to SMT I
I love both smt1 and 2; Also difficulty spikes can be avoided/cheese if you grind for gems; Not only will it help with macca/mag but also the gems give great stat boosts and there is a lot of places in the overworld that has enemies that drop them often.

So thanks to this video I got my shit together after my failed attempt to play smt 1 years ago and fired up that emulator on my 3ds
It's actually quite fun but I also was surprised to find out there's:
A translation of the gba version of 1 and Spanish translations of both 1 and 2,that really surprised me

My history with SMT 2 is pretty strange as I ended up playing it before the fan favorite Nocturne and was only my second megaten game overall. That said I really enjoyed it once I got over the culture shock of 1st person view and magnetite. I got through this game well enough and still haven't finished SMT 1 so take that as you will.

I kinda like the atmosphere and story of smt 1 more than 2 even tho objectively smt 2 is a better game in terms of gameplay and QoL improvements
I think the missing charm may have to do with the quality of the music. The music was just more catchy and remember while SMTII ost (while good) falls a little flat when comparing the both.

I used the SNES version in Emuhawk. Recorded it with OBS stream labs.
In the spanish patch made in 2012, they fixed the names.

I'm playing through smt1 right now and there are definitely alignment based equipment and you need to be the propper alignment to summon a demon, this wasn't new to 2. Or maybe it changed with the orden patch, since I'm not using it

Minor nitpick, but you mention alignment-locked equipment and demons as being new to SMT2, but SMT1 had the same system in place. It actually became a bit of a nuisance toward the end for my playthrough, as I had a couple Law demons as my main healing source, but wound up taking the Chaos path.
Oh really? My bad, I guess I never noticed since I've always done neutral playthroughs of SMT1.

If Fire Emblem 1 came out to the West after years of not being localized. I have hope SMT II will eventually come to the West officially also.
Not to rain on your parade but...Persona 2 never got a full western release even though we got Innocent Sin remade on PSP. They didn't bother with localizing the actual remake of Eternal Punishment.
I can't imagine SMT 2 getting a localized release after it was remade twice and ported to several other platforms with nothing for western players. Would love to see it happen but this is Atlus we are talking about.
The company that ported P4G to only Steam despite PS4 having a lot of the legacy fanbase from the PS2 originals and PS3 ports of 3 and 4 and a built in audience due to P4 dancing being on PS4, plus all the people who came in with 5 and Royal. The company that put Joker in Smash but has yet to put a proper Persona game on Switch. Despite having the actual sequel to P5 on Switch.
If the cash cow of Persona gets that half assed treatment, what hope does mainline SMT have with the older titles?

@@Ratta212 So I don't want to link it myself because I'd rather avoid any potential legal issues but I was able to find an English patched SMT 2 rom pretty quickly on Google. I know there's also a patched SMT 1 out there too as I got it ages ago.
@@zeroattentiongaming820i think we should hope about an official translation (on a playable console or pc) of smt 1 and 2, we got official spanish translation for persona 5 royale and strikers and smt 3 nocturne so, maybe, just maaaaybe atlus doesnt hate making money anymore

You can play the GBA version of 1, it is english translated. I played it and it's really good.

That final fantasy analogy is pretty ridiculous lol. It took ff7 selling 14 million units before we got other old school final fantasies. And that was bc it was the best selling game of its era. Just because there both JRPG series doesn’t mean there comparable mate 🤣.

Well, I lost all interest in your opinion when y'all stated that final fantasy 3 was garbage. Look at the year it came out and how much more it did than anything else on 8 bit even came close to. Just later ff games stole from it so much it does not feel unique anymore, and that is in no way it's fault. Famicom FF III was a near masterpiece. SMT 2 is great, but overhyped because of it's rarity by kotaku boys. Like when gamefaqs had a rating system and fan translated only games were all given 5 stars by people who felt cool and special because they were "in the know" for getting to play them.
You know, i just got into Persona with the switch port of 5R. Why not do a selling you on Persona, from the point of view of a mainline fan?
Before Persona I was very much a mainline elitist, hell SMT V is probably the most time I've put into a non Pokemon or Fallout RPG. I love the overall vibe and creatures of MegaTen but the social sim elements where a put off. But now with 5R on Switch I just can't stop playing, I was so wrong to write off this subseries.
I guess a young guy like him does not understand all the
Influences, artistic elements and design choices marrying into purpose that went onto this game. He is over burdened by modernity and did not fully experience the contrast at that time. Even through explaination someone today won't understand the art of the first phantasy star, for example. It would be as hard as "showing" what the 80's were, or pointing out how specific frustrations and or doubt or unfillment are specific tells to 70's 80's or 90's scifi. Or even how stylistic choices to restrict progress or speed of play or limiting elements with resource requirements could scratch certain itches. Remember what poor "crafting systems" or weaksauce retro art did in the early 2010's on account of people just not "getting it?" You don't get it unless you were their at the time and it played to tastes that were developed by all the other content (and their limits) at the time.

Who was the guy that called FF3 garbage? That game runs laps around this game in literally every aspect except for the conceptual idea for a plot. SMT 2 is cool, but let’s not pretend that it’s not some horrible antiquated, clunky, game that has a cool idea for a story in theory. I’m not even referring to the remake of 3, but the actual NES version.
