SMT has their fair share of fantastic and unbelievable creatures. Even some more modern designs harken back to the ancient beliefs of our species. Kazuma Kaneko's art used for the shin megami tensei and persona series is always a treat to analyze and relate back to our modern culture with their roots in ancient mysticism and culture. Sometimes though, a far more recent, even modern design slips through and makes it into the games. Everything from silly legends of a flying moth the size of a man, to more sinister entities that haunt the dreams of many across the globe. I even found a way to relate it back to psychology and anthropology. In this episode of smt lore or persona lore we dive deep into the more recent monsters of our time. When we learn about angels and demons, spiritual beings, and regional folklore, we usually read about them and laugh at how silly people could have been in those old times. I mean small winged creatures that steal children, or one legged giants that stomp on passerbys is just insane right? Well if there’s one thing that’s obvious about humans it’s that, no matter how much scientific advancement we go through, we all want to believe in something magical. It was the same then, and believe it or not, might be more fantastical now than ever before. Now seen as urban legends and regional folk tales, these cryptids and strange happenings have become so popular that they’ve found themselves in all kinds of media, including Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. So let’s take some time to talk about these strange creatures from across the globe and learn what we can about their history and lore. I am from germany and I remember a game. It's like normal catch, but the catcher is the "Black Man".

Then everyone screams and runs away from the Black Man, who tries to catch everyone.

Bugaboo is one of my favorite designs in the series. He's simultaneously so generic looking for a "demon" and so detailed that you can tell there's more going on. The pose helps with the whole "I'm innocent and don't know what's going on" vibe he has in Strange Journey.
Sometimes less is more when it comes to design, Bugaboo is the perfect example. All the little details pop so much, I really love him too
The red "skin" also seems to actually be bandages around his black skin.
Mothman and Beelzebub just go to show that bug-themed monsters are cool as hell.
Something inherently creepy about them, Beelzebub is a fan favorite for sure
I hope Atlus features more cryptids and urban legends as demons in future Megaten entries
They really are some of the most interesting demons in the series
still waiting for the Hobsville Goblin, funny that Zelda Majora's Mask had a similar monster

Urban legends in smt have so much potential! Imagine demons based on more modern myths
Even that is true, I just love the art of the Shadows/Demons/figures/Personas by SMT
The fact that we had a Drag Queen Zombie Demon in the old games just show the potential for more modern myths and stories

It's crazy how popular mothman became in the SMT games.
He even has a slight big role in a particular dungeon in Soul Hackers 2. Changing the voice where instead of the familiar chirps you hear since Nocturne up to 5, Soul Hackers 2 gives him a creepy voice along with a disturbing laugh. Certain other demons also have that voice, but it's more iconic hearing it from Mothman and what he does to the gang.

I'm surprised SMT doesn't have a Bloody Mary, yet. It's such an easy concept to adapt, as well as having many similar myths like the Brazilian Blonde in the Bathroom or the Japanese Hanako-san.
As for why many human cultures have their own version of a boogie-man, my guess is that it comes from the fact that early humans had to deal with other hominids who looked a lot like us but were not completely human. A human-like figure who isn't exactly human and whose intentions are unknown can be a very scary thing and evolving to avoid something like it may explain fears like this and the uncanny valley
didnt expect to be sent on a nostalgia trip with this. i still remember reporters in the local news talking about el chupacabra . i would always wonder and theorize what it looked like, while also being a little scared. also my grandparents singing me lullabies about the boogeyman ( which we call el cuco in puerto rico )

Playing SMT3 back when it came out, going through the game collecting Japanese folklore and the occasional Buddhist or Christian figure was cool, then I stumbled across Mothman and reading its description, that it wasn't just some made up creature but that Atlus actually referred to the WV urban legend blew my kid mind. The Mothman Prophecies only came out a few years prior, so seeing this obscure creature running with Thor, Vishnu, and Samael was nuts
I wish Chupacabra got more love in megaten. I hope this videos got a part 2 because there's way more than these 3 in smt.
I always thought that urban legends have enormous potential in smt, and I found it quite disappointing that they never got much more focus, there being plenty of them, and btw, I always asked myself, why they had a pretty goofy desing, the intimidating designs in the descripcion of the urban legends are better except for boogeyman

Mothman still remains as my favorite cryptid from SMT. It doesn't look imposing at all and they gave it such a cute and interesting design choice. I'm curious if Atlus would ever consider using the more recent Urban legend creatures in the future, such as Momo, Siren Head, Slender Man, etc.
I love how common it was for people across many cultures to scare their kids with stories of monsters lurking in the dark so kids will obey their parents. I definitely got spooked in my youth with a story or two from my elders of monsters spiriting away naughty children.

Honestly Im glad Mothman has this almost innocent look to it. Its attributed to being so scary because of its red eyes but when you actually get a closer look at its face it’s really just a weird animal that probably won’t attack you unless you provoke it. It’s basically just a funny alien creature and I really like having something like that in SMT.

Love Mothman! He kinda reminds me of Absol from Pokemon, being a warning of disasters but feared for his powers by humans. Atlus would make a ton of money if they gave us a Mothman plush, just saying.
Here in Brazil we have The Bicho Papão who makes the same role as Boogeyman.
Learning about the different regions take on the boogeyman was very cool, South America has a ton of interesting folk lore

I have been waiting for this video forever. Using urban legends and putting them alongside myths from ancient civilizations is one of my favorite parts of SMT and it’s even inspired some story ideas I had in the past.

Weird, for some reason I thought the lore of El Chupacabra existed before the 90's. Then again, the first time I heard of the legend would have been circa '97-'98... specifically from that episode of Dexter's Laboratory in which it was revealed that El Chupacabra was actually Dexter's pet Charlie that he created to ward off Dee Dee

I'm still hoping the Oregon man gets in there. Part crack, part meth we don't know how much of his humanity is left. They say he stalks the streets all day and all night and often times harasses people outside smaller store for money. He makes camp in wooded areas and inside of bushes when he's tired.

In the 1920s, serial killer Albert Fish was also nicknamed the boogeyman due to most of his victims being children he had abducted, abused, killed and then eaten.
In his most infamous crime, he wrote to the mother of 2 children he had abducted, detailing what he had done and how he cooked them.

Bloody Mary needs to become a thing. A mirror with a woman in it. There's multiple versions so I can try and combine all into one design: a mirror with a skeletal woman within holding a candle. Of course there's more but this would be the easiest to do.
I'd kill to see urban legends like Baba Yaga, Black Shuck/Hellhound, L'uomo Nero, and the oni who inspired the character of Snartle from Yo-kai Watch to be represented in SMT/Persona. Two of which are sadly unmentioned here.

Another great video Tony! Thank you again for all your hard work. I couldn't help but think of Bugs after hearing about the Boogeyman/Bugaboo. I concluded that the scary teddy bear is just an English interpretation of the same spirit, or have you come across anything different in your research? Also, after playing Soul Hackers 2, I find Mothman absolutely terrifying due to the creepy voice and mana draining (I prefer mage characters and no MP makes me sad).

The "Food" race of demons are ones that, in universe, are considered safe to eat for humans.

The riders that are forced to endlessly ride, rangling up metallic, demonic bulls.
I imagine a cowboy on a horse that slowly shifts into a metal cow that the rider has a lasso around its neck. The animals brand would be the circular 666, with flames burning off of it, turning into its hind legs of horrible flames.
Idk- just my ideas.

El kukuy "coocooy" is also another version of the boogieman in Mexico. Parents tell their children that "El kukuy" is gonna get you if you don't listen

for me i like behemoth because he has strong dark magic in smt nocturne and he always associate with summoning demon, satan and stuff. he also exist as animal world call Austrian goat breed Vierhornziege (four-horned goat) it actually pretty cute. but just wondering why he a goat? why he cant be other shape like human or something. i heart from tiktok that the goat shape creature came from Cristian France monk mocking Muhammad and calling him satan worshiper and the goat are associate with goat because he has goat farm. and that is why he exist. but it cant be true right? it sound like conspiracy to me. what do you think?
