This is an angel that I put off covering for a long time due to the seemingly uninteresting design is shin megami tensei itself, but I kept getting pulled back due to the interesting tidbits of lore within the smt games and my inherent love of Jewish and Christian angelology. The topic of angels and demons are some of the most interesting to discuss in all of Abrahamic religion. Despite this, there is actually very little information given about them save what they look like and the occasional vague story involving one. Usually an archangel communing with a human or fallen angel tempting one with sinful delights. Even among the esoteric knowledge regarding the orders of angels and demons, there has been one that has always interested me above the others, Samael. Seemingly contradictory information appears about this entity throughout history, whether he is the father of all demons and one of the first to rebel against God, or necessary evil and most faithful of the heavenly host. Let’s go through all the history and lore to find out the truth of Samael the venom of God. Christian archangels are much more than the original Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. From kabbalah to non canonical books in the bible, the Samael lore is a rabbit hole that captivated me for hours and hours. The venom of God Samael lore is potentially the most interesting demon in religion that may be a more than just one of the simple fallen angels. Potentially the most interesting of the Christian angels being the angel of death or sin itself. I hope you enjoy learning the demon Samael's lore. - เกม

This is the kind of content I really enjoy when you make. I got an idea, not like a next week idea, but imagine if you networked with a priest, a rabbi and an imam, got them to play some SMT games, and host a podcast where they lost aspects of the games they found particularly intriguing.

My fave part of these videos is when Tony explains this marvelously long and deep history of mankind’s mythologies and how they may or may not reflect on how we should live our our lives in the best way possible.

I feel like he was maybe used more as the “antagonist” or anti hero of the Bible. Not evil necessarily, but less forgiving than Mastema.

SMT/Persona games are like…one of the very few games that I actually read additional lore about. Religious figures/spiritual figures/mythical creatures/etc etc are just so damn interesting.
I think the SMT form of Samael's also related to how known he is. Seems like the angels/demons that are more mysterious or less prominent in human culture/folklore get the crazier depictions in SMT.

I believe Samael is referenced in Gnostic text along with Yaldabouth which makes it much more understanding considering the P5 connection between Shido and the Holy Grail, God of control.
Absolutely! There was a lot more I could have had in the video and the Shido gnosticism connection is a very interesting one. I tried to stick with more predominant religious texts for this video though
I do wonder if the next angel will be Azazel. I know Azazel is a basic angel to explain but I feel there's more to it than what Wikipedia says.
He's one of the more popular "non-canonical" angels, he's definitely on my radar

It's interesting that we're discovering more malevolent angels than we ever would have assumed. Between Samael, Azrael, and Mastema, some of these angels seem like barely controlled forces of nature, leaving chaos in their wake. Are they parables, misinterpreted, or simply fulfilling a role that we can barely understand that fits into the greater plan? There's so much more to learn...

One of my favorite SMT angel designs from the moment I first encountered him in Strange Journey. I always try to get him on my team whenever possible. Who wouldn't want an awesome snake-dragon on their side?

I feel like you could easily do something like this as a college thesis as a theology major. Analyzing a fictional interpretation of a real mythological figure seems like it could be fun to look deeper into.

I remember this guy as one of the bosses in Nocturne. I've always loved his design, definitely emphasizes the serpent-like appearance rather than dragon which just looks awesome. Also, it kinda makes sense that he has access to alot of status effects thanks to the meaning of his name.

I have studied long and hard about Samael. He is one of the most perplexing entities out there. I have always viewed him as a sort of double agent. Servant of the Lord God most high and one who has the power to transcend all realms of existence to carry out the will of God. He is sorta like the Al Capone of God. He does the sketchy stuff.

Many confuse Samael for Satan, even though they are two separate entities. Samael is a false god like Yalbaboath, however unlike the latter's holy qualities, the former is a devil king of temptation in a similar vein to Belial. He also got engaged with the former wife of Adam, Lilith after she got reincarnated as a demoness, and was known for causing infanticide, as well as corruption of witchcraft.
Both Samael and Lilith are represented in an altered version of the Belphegor's Star, thus used in the Satanic Church's image during modern day(circa. The 1930s-1970s).

You mentioned Samael is sometimes referred to as the angel of death. Does he often get mixed up with Azrael, the other angel of death?
They are the same, Samael is the name of the Angel, Azrael the name of his counterpart demon. He is God but he is "fallen" only in our mind hence why he is split.

as a Catholic I believe that Samael is indeed Satan and is a fallen angel, but at the same time I see how Samael represents the slow evolution of Satan from a God-appointed temptor to the chief of the fallen angel. I personally think Samael is both, he was a temptor who then fell and became Satan/Lucifer
