I've seen Phoebe Bridgers twice, and I've been appalled at how her fans treated her both times. Shouting s3xual comments, calling her mommy, and constantly yelling tik tok humor at every turn, even after her most devastating songs. The second time I saw her she opened up about getting an abortion, and instead of listening to her and being respectful, everyone was just wildly screaming at her while she looked uncomfortable, unable to get a word in over the noise. I've loved her music for years but her fans are unbearably juvenile and annoying.

I’m a high school teacher (mainly ninth grade with 14-15 year olds). The last year has been so chaotic. These kids HAVE been “depraved of decency” and you’re absolutely right that COVID has messed with their heads. So many times last year I wanted to cry because so many of them do not care and will act “feral” because they think making others upset makes them cool or trendy like their fav problematic eboys. They have no concept of repercussions because when they were on zoom school for a year they had instant access to whatever their lil brains wanted and many parents will just concede and let them use their phones or give them whatever to stop them from directing that energy at them. NOT ALL parents do this and NOT ALL my students were like this, but enough were that it made my life hellish.

Underrated comment. I see this more and more. Kids are glued to their screens---that their parents foisted on them when they were toddlers---and so are a good majority of these parents. The kid throws a tantrum to get their way because it's the only way they can get parental attention...and half the time that doesn't even work anymore. I work retail and see so many zombified parents dragging their screaming kids everywhere just ignoring them, scrolling their phones, or shoving another LOUD screen in their face to placate them. And conversely, helicopter parenting is an issue too, but what I see a great deal of is parents just letting their kids run around screaming, chasing, rubbing their hands all over everything, messing up work an employee has just completed, drawing on fixtures, without so much as a cautionary scold. Ridiculous. Lazy parenting.

    • @DiamondsAndMeForever
      @DiamondsAndMeForever ปีที่แล้ว +24

@@nickb329 I too am in a similar boat. In my case, my neighbor's kids aren't on screens as much as the kids I encounter working retail, but anytime other than the dead of winter they will literally be outside from roughly 9am to 9pm screaming, blasting the radio or KidzBop, running through yards, the whole nine. Their mom locks herself in the basement to do her "art" a lot of the time now and I just...don't know why she had 3 kids in close succession if she wanted to stay alone all day painting. Before it got to this point, she was outside with them some days, conducting culturally inaccurate drum circles (they've said borderline racist stuff about Indigenous people in the past, so it was weird) and singing songs about the earth, or having a dozen or more cars crowd our small residential street so she could have even more kids over to TEACH her art.
Coincidentally, one of the kids she had over got stuck in a tree and hurt and was screaming for help from his mom and the mom just ignored him for a full five minutes or more, chatting away with another mom about good school districts.

Let's be real, when ppl were shouting that "mommy" type of shit at Clairo and Mitski.... it's harassment. It's nasty and inappropriate. I don't think the pandemic had much to do with this behavior. I think people addicted to the internet (who have been here before the pandemic) forget how to speak to real people. At one point, Mitski had to tweet out for fans to please make a connection with her on stage instead of having their phones up the whole set and standing in silence to get a good video. Then her fans started jumping her calling her ableist n shite. She just wanted to form a bond with them but they took her criticism as an attack instead of listening... P sure she ended up deleting the thread. And I think in the situation with Clairo when ppl were shouting that stuff at her it was during a song abt how she feels.. objectified. So.. yeah. Terrible. People please open your ears and use your brains!!
Anyway! The timing of this video is perfect because recently kpop group LOONA have been touring and at their last show one of the members missed the last few songs of the concert because she was upset fans kept screaming over her when she kept trying to talk. There's a video where she begins talking and fans continue cheering for a different member and she looked so upset. Honestly, part of me wants to say the pandemic has made people forget how to act but...I feel like Gen Z had been like this even before, older and younger. A few years ago Brendon Urie was on Broadway in Kinky Boots, and a bunch of Panic fans showed up to the show and treated it like a concert basically; cheering whenever Brendon came for his scenes, booed a few cast members when they came on, sang along to his numbers, then afterwards mobbed the stage door and we're disrespectful when other cast members came out instead of him. It was 2017 so this would have been older gen Z, because everyone reported it was teens in Panic merch doing this, to the point Brendon didn't even come out the stage door

I think this happened in every generation, the only difference is, previous generations didn't get clout online where millions could watch and like their idiocy. Social media rewards stupid teenagers far more than they were ever rewarded before in history. So their nasty behavoir gets out of hand and leaks into more and more areas of life where behaving like a sane adult used to be a social norm that was heavily inforced by adults.
The last point in the video about gen z's identity crisis is th same deal to me. Everyone has this "identity crisis" when going through puberty. Every generation went through this. The only difference is gen z has the ability to broadcast it more than anyone, and there are markets forming around their insecurities that reinforces them and makes it even harder for them to develop as sound adults and form a personality of their own. The internet is completely dominated by gen z tbh, and bc of that, the "i'm all powerful and adults are trash" mentally that all teens always go through is harder for us to escape and for adults to tame the way they use to.
Because of all these mechanism reinforcing and rewarding immaturity, it's very likely that gen z will realize how cringe and annoying they were much later than previous gens.

I’m gen z myself, but I don’t understand people who act like that. And luckily I only go to small gigs where shit like this doesn’t happen.
But i think a few factors affect such mentality:
    1) The parasocial relationship. Social media truly erased boundaries between a celebrity and their fans. I think a lot of fans view artists as their friends, who are “in” on the joke. They see them not as stars, but as their buddies.
    2) The Tiktok effect, where a lot of people listen to only one song of an artist and decide to go to concert
    3) Attention seeking, wanting to be edgy, cool or whatever.
    4) Teen biology. It’s a known fact that teens tend to lack empathy and self-control. That’s not unique to our generation
    5) Loosing value of authentic experiences. Everything has to be recorded, streamed, etc. People have hard time enjoying irl stuff. ( and if the perosn isn’t interested in the artist and only came for that one song, we know it only gets worse)
I’m personally hardbroken that this shit now happens to indie musicians, who are very personal in their music.

Two months ago, I went to see Thundercat live. To be clear, Thundercat's live band is phenomenal. Both the keyboardist and the drummer are INCREDIBLY good at playing their instruments. Thundercat himself is tasked not only with playing his bass AND singing, but with entertaining the audience, making conversation, dancing or jumping around, keeping up his energy level, etc. The concert was in a very small venue. I was standing in the very first row, all too happy to see the person whose music has helped me get through some very tough times, as well as helping me connect with others, broaden my perspective on life ... My date and I were excited for this show for months and didn't even mind cancelling plans when the show was postponed a few months. But, when Thundercat came on stage and we finally saw his fantastic shiny Gucci hair-clip, the girl behind us immediately started 'heckling' him and hurling meaningless comments. She spent the ENTIRE show screaming stupidities, all the while using her phone to film. Thundercat looked exhausted that night, he even told the audience he was mourning the loss of a very close friend, who had died just a few days prior... This girl absolutely didn't give a shit. When he told a story to engage with the audience, she replied "That's actually not that funny!" Other times, she interrupted him, yelled out parts of his TikTok-famous songs while he was soloing, all in the 2nd row. I wish I could have been annoyed by her screaming right next to my ear, but what really annoyed me was the disrespect. As soon as we left the venue, my date and I couldn't even reflect on how happy we were to have seen a treasured musician, as we first had to ask each other what the fuck we thought that girl had been trying to achieve. Terrible. Seeing your video and how disrespectful entire CROWDS are, I'm appalled. Your videos are excellent, I wish you all the luck with your own music career, too.

This is a great video! I'm a sound engineer for live shows and I saw the difference immediately post-lockdowns. The tiktok teens don't understand the difference between the internet and the real world anymore. It feels almost dissociative. I'm also a member of gen z (born in 2000, 21 years old) but I've never put much effort into social media, and I have never been into tiktok. I had a partner who was a tiktoker and frankly it was scary see how little critical thinking there is on there. It's one big hive mind of trends and opinions like there has never been. My partner genuinely feared having any other opinion than what was popular on tiktok. Scary shit

Man I always try my best to be extra supportive of opening acts, I might even cheer them on louder than the headliner themselves. Opening acts are just starting out. They're nervous, they're excited, they're terrified, they're talented, they know the crowd isn't there for them and yet they'll put on one hell of a show if you let them.
Went to see twenty one pilots in 2019 and I'd never heard of the opening band in my life. They were just a bunch of kids, lead singer was 18. Flash forward to today and The Regrettes are playing some major festivals, vocalist is buddies with Olivia Rodrigo, they dropped a new record, their fanbase is going strong.
The kind of music they make isn't my favorite, but they're hella talented and fierce and it's a ruthless industry. I'll never forget the look on their faces when we went all in on their songs. I have so many thoughts about this video!
I went to the Olivia Rodrigo concert and it truly was one of the worst experiences I've had at a show. going in I knew her fan base was young, but I wasn't expecting to be shoved, pushed past and just like have all common curiosity disregarded. Also the phone use was absolutely ridiculous, like the guy in front of me literally held up two phones recording the entire concert. Nobody could see because SO many people in front of us recorded the whole time.
I know mitski addressed the phone use and people were absolutely terrible to her. Like we've barely had mitski back from her 2019 retirement, why are you going out of your way to harass and drive her away. Plus her reasoning is sooo valid. She's already extremely vulnerable with her music. her performances are meant to be intimate and expressive. she set those boundaries of minimizing phone use to preserve her sanity, and to create a space SHE felt comfortable performing in. idk like just because someone is in the spotlight, doesn't mean you are entitled to their time and talent. If she says a wall of phones makes her feel like a dancing monkey, as her fan why wouldn't you support her suggesting ways to help midigate these feelings 😭
also when it comes to the gen z obsession with aesthetics and this hive mind mentality, I definitely think the pandemic did have a large influence. I worked at a middle school and the amount of just like ridiculous things happening on a daily basis was just absurd. Not being able to interact with their peers for like 2 years made things routy. they had to relearn how to interact with new and people and how to treat them appropriately. But also during teenage years developmentally, emotionally and socially there are so many rapid changes. This is where kids start to kinda gain their sense of identity, and so they are very malleable. With the 24/7 unfiltered access to the internet mixed with trying to navigate teenage hood, you are very susceptible to the influence of social media and the internet in general. It truly is worrisome because we are already seeing the effects on kids and teens. I'm not saying all teenagers shouldnt have social media, but I do think a conversation needs to be started around teaching kids and teens how to consume it safely. Even adults have unhealthy relationships with their media consumption and to truly address this issues a lot of things (misogyny, racism, colorism, abelism, transphobia, fatphobia and so many more) would have to be addressed and acknowledged as harmful. So I don't know hahah I just hope as we progress at least like disclosures, warnings and notes that what we are seeing, isn't always accurate depiction of reality are included.

All of the Gen Z being a ”different” generation back in the height of the pandemic and even now is because of our identity issues. I have gone to concerts since I was in elementary school and I’ve loved it ever since. i’ve been to 30+ concerts with my dad and it’s some of the best moments I’ve ever had. To see these people blatantly disrespecting artists i’ve seen and valued for a while is heartbreaking. I do not want to be associated with these people. They do not label me and concert going is a gift and a privilege. I love that you can be in a room of people who all agree and all the negative and terrible words and thoughts are left at the door. Ive seen a lot of different artists and some indie artists live (peach pit and still woozy) and those were probably my favorite concerts. It saddens me that not everyone can get the respect they deserve.

There were hardly any teenagers and mostly adults in their 30s-40s, and everyone was so fun, smoking weed, jamming out and just having fun. Even when there was underrated openers everyone was so respectful. Even after the show everyone was either high or drunk and just so nice to each other. I saw this on tiktok today but the "K-pop stanification" of every fandom is also becoming a problem too. The way Gen Z is straight up hunting down Joseph Quinn right now?? There's apparently a group chat jist to find his location and people showed up to his hotel while he was on a family vacation HIS brother (i think it was his brother) had to tell them to leave. It's with everything, the way kids are sending eachother money to buy more albums just so their multimillionaire faves can have a number one?? The people straight up sexually harrasing celebrities at concerts, the extra intense breakdown and headcanons on REAL PEOPLE'S sexuality and identity. It's too much, they're also so young and talking about being subs and doms all these things.

    3. It’s almost attention seeking, like that annoying person in class who’d always be naughty for the class to pay attention to them as if they’re cool when they’re just a pain 🤦🏻‍♂️ it’s basically that and in the eyes of the internet (and the world) bad press = good press

dude I was at a 5sos concert in june and I didn't even realize they'd had a bit of a resurgence bc of tiktok and omg it was so noticeable how annoying young people ( my age ) act. like they were singing a sad slow song and the group of girls behind me yelled “YOU’RE SO HOT”. they'd done this the whole concert shouting unfunny stuff like “pick me choose me love” like stfu and let us listen bro 😭

I can only imagine how damaging experiencing something like that would be someone’s self-esteem. Why are y’all so mean damn

I went to a Mitski concert and me and everyone else in the room loved her performance, she continually made us cry laugh and we all really bonded in the room. A few weeks later my friends went to the Harry styles concert and said that everyone thought she was cringy - that fillled me with rage wtf is wrong w them?!?

Gen Z is proverbially caught between being the cool kid who thinks trying too hard is cringe and being the art kid who sees the nuance and beauty in everything and that's the problem.
Ya'll don't know who you are because you grew up online pelted by the opinions of every person around you. It's also because none of the old generations knew who they were either, but they had counter cultures and niches to fall into. Gen Z is so worried about trending and being "in", ya'll are like a bunch of dodos chasing each other off the cliff.
As a millennial whose generation has faced two recessions since graduating highschool, we don't have hope for y'all. The ship is already sinking, when it's sunk and everyone's on their own, y'all are super screwed. Trending won't matter when you're starving.

@@portofthoughts4477 I mean it’s one way to look at it, I do agree i wonder who i would’ve been if I didn’t have the internet. But I think generations in general aren’t the best way to distinguish people. I think if people started to dismantle generations as a concept, we wouldn’t feel the need to play into and defend stereotypes and we could just be our own people. Sadly that won’t happen, but it is a wish.

also the effect of parasocial relationships and lack of separation between behaviour on the internet and reality is so real and so damaging
:( it made me cry thinking abt how these artists must feel, also embarrassed to be part of gen z. ive been going to concerts basically my whole life and it's truly one of the most magical and special opportunities, i hate to think theyre starting to be ruined and that artists arent going to want to even keep touring. i wouldnt blame them tho because this behaviour is FOUL. infuriating honestly

Seeing people doing stuff like this makes me so sad. It’s so important to respect opening acts even if you don’t know them!! I’ve been front row at concerts where I’ve never heard the opener but I still dance with the music have fun and always applaud after a song! I’ve left many concerts becoming a fan of new artists too. It’s supposed to be a fun space for everyone to enjoy, and people ruining it makes me so mad
