      Men aren't completely excluded, Justin Bieber was dragged through the mud during his growing up/experimenting phase as one example. I also can't think of as many break out boy to men solo artists as I can girls to women so statistically there might be a bias? But I would agree that women are generally more sexualized than boys/men.

      In my observation, there are people who believe that pop stars should be role models and there are people who realize that that is silly. Male child stars are just as pressured to project an image of moral purity as female ones. However, what is true is that far more female pop stars were child stars than male ones, because women generally can't continue to be successful for quite as long. At least not as singers. Audiences tolerate older male singers or performers much better than older female ones. Not that there aren't exceptions, Dolly Parton comes to mind, but as a general rule a female singer can't expect to continue making it in showbiz if she's older than 40. Hence why most female singers will start some other type of business between their 30th and 40th birthdays. If a woman wants a long career, she needs to start early: so she'll start as a child or teen star. Men can wait longer to start their careers, so most male pop stars didn't start as children or teens. But those who did? yeah, the press will freak out just as much when they (inevitably) "go bad".
      There is also a racial element to this. Notice the lack of flipping out when Beyoncé grew up and started dressing like a dominatrix in her music videos and putting out songs with all kinds of suggestive lyrics. Compared to, ya know, Britney...showing her bra? Her tummy? licking a lollipop? idk what people were actually freaking out about, and I lived through it lol. All I know is everyone was losing their minds over Britney, while The Queen B was wearing straight up bondage gear and nobody seemed to care (I did, but in the "oh, I guess I like girls too" way rather than the "omg how dare she" way). They were both child stars, but Beyoncé wasn't expected to be innocent and virginal and pure because she is black. Of course, the flip side of that is that on the occasions when she actually wants to project an image of purity for artistic reasons: it generally gets taken entirely the wrong way by the press (and in at least one video, by the cameraman).

    I really hate that attitude that it’s a random celebrity’s responsibility to be a role model to your child. I only somewhat agree. If society as a whole ONLY normalizes artists who make music about drugs, sex, etc then parents truly have no real options as far as music for their child. “Christian music” has become a meme and any child who pulls up listening to Josh Groben or something will surely be bullied. When you say things like “it’s the parents’ responsibility” you’re basically encouraging helicopter parenting because that’s the only real option a parent has to protect their kids from inappropriate content. With the internet and progressive social norms, things come to a point where we have to stop thinking selfishly and think about civilization as a whole. We can’t have EVERYBODY making music about sex and drugs and you can’t have a functioning society if everyone just cares about their own individual freedoms.

    it's so horrible to think that these girls have to appeal to sexual gestures and a "dirtier image" to people realize that they are grown women, but instead of celebrate that, the media was really interested in putting they down and use this to make money over depreciate image of female artists who just want to be recognized who they really are. A similar thing happen with Mariah Carey, despite that she's was already a woman, but carries that "sweetheart and docile" kind of personality, and with the divorce and the Butterfly era she really could be who she really are.

    • @chrisman3431
      @chrisman3431 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Butterfly was really the tipping point for Mariah's independance/emancipation (no pun intented) from Tommy Motolla as a woman and an artist. That's when she had full creative control over her sound and image. She was fully transitionning into RnB and hip hop. It slowly started with Daydream obviously with the ODB feauturing on Fantasy remix, Da Brat on Always Be My Baby remix, Jermaine Dupri (Always Be My Baby), Babyface (Melt Away) at the production, and the Boys Il Men collab One Sweet Day which was longest running number 1 on the billboard hot 100 until Lil Nas X Old Road of course (16 non consecutive weeks at number 1). But with Butterfly it was official she worked with Bad Boys (Diddy, Mase, The Lox, Stevie J) on Honey and its remix, Bone Thugs and Harmony (Breakdown), she sampled Mobb Deep Shook Ones part Il and invited them (The Roof), Missy Elliott at the production and songwritting (Babydoll), featured rnb group Dru Hill (The Beautiful Ones)....

      Of course Sony wasn't feeling it and did not promoted Breakdown, The Roof or the title track. Only the lead single Honey and the latin ballad My All became hits and both peaked at number one on the hot 100 and did great internationaly as well. And obviously Mariah was more sexual and sexy in her image. She became this bombshell with her banging ass body. The iconic scene of her coming out the swimming pool in the Honey music video like a James Bond girl. She was more expressive and open about her childhood growing up in an interracial family, having a black venezuelan father and white Irish mother, her racial ambiguity, especially during that interview with Oprah and with her mother

    I know this video is about female popstars but its fascinating to see how the general idea of people hating on child singers/actors/etc just because they've evolved with their age, has been so normalized. Somehow, people think just because a child acts a certain way when they're young that they are supposed to be that way throughout their life. Like in the music industry, Demi-Lovato and Selena-Gomez got so much shit for switching up the genre and topics of their music and being the women they wanted to be. The idea of a bunch of PARENTS thinking they have a right to give their opinion on how another child artist should act growing up is so insane.
    I also don't like the double standards of the industry because I don't see many male Disney stars getting as much shit for switching up their personas or music. Somehow if Harry Styles wears colored suits, dresses, he's expressing himself but when a female artist wears something that might be a bit out of the ordinary she's suddenly screaming for attention or a slut. I'm not saying male artists don't get shit its just not proportionate to the hate female artists get.

    lots to take from this video, but the thing that stuck out most to me is how entitled so many people feel to these women and girls since most of them entered the industry when they were underage... I can't imagine what that does to your sense of self, your ability to set boundaries (and feel that they will be respected) and your conception of healthy relationships that will follow you the rest of your life, like the stuff that's come out about how brittany has been mistreated is horrifying and I can't help but think of how many people all but agreed to do that to her in the industry for profit

    • @PhoeNEx10

      When I watched the new netflix show about Britney, there's a scene there where she's being told that she's going to hold and dance with a snake and she's like "what? Lol omg" and I notice that everyone around her are dudes... And, dont mistaken me there's nothing going on in that precise scene, but seeing her surrounded by dudes, and knowing how 99% of industries have men in charge, has me thinking how damaging and dangerous it must have been for her. How many took advantage of her in some way, how she might have been groomed and gaslighted by so many dudes with second intentions you know?

I was obsessed her with diamond catsuit in "Toxic", should I have been watching the video? Maybe not lol..but when it came to her speaking points, she was always positive and inspiring. as someone who grew up in the miley era, i fell into the whole "omg miley went crazy, what's wrong with her" mentality that was copied by the adults around me. but now that I'm older, honestly good for her. the appropriation issue is another topic (along with billie) that is shitty, but when it comes to them expressing their sexuality and body and womanhood, good for them. that's such a good role model to have as a young adult to just be your authentic self and love yourself for who you are. and let me say that Miley may have hit the bong more than a few times, but she is doing well. bitch is still coming out with bangers that sell like firecrackers and she is still iconic and her brand is doing well. no huge scandals beyond her just growing up and no shitty things that she gets cancelled over or that ruin other people's life. she's just wearing funky bikinis and glitter and singing on stage. let the woman be.

    I feel iffy about this one. I think there's 2 different pipelines - there's adult women expressing themselves, and part of that self expression being their sexuality or femininity. And then there's the "child star/minor-jurt-turned-adult starts getting naked and sexualizing themselves to an objectively unhealthy degree". Like, I personally don't think Miley Cyrus' wrecking ball was self expression any more than it was crying out for agency, which is to be expected from child stars that spend their developing years being suppressed by the circumstances of their career at utterly inappropriate ages, but no less sad. I think the distinction needs to be made because one should be encouraged and supported as a normal growing process, and the other should be prevented because it's damaging to the women's mental health in the long run. But that starts with stopping this whole '8 year old girl works for Disney 10 hours a day until they're 21' shit.

    • @megsley
      @megsley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      yes to this - swinging from one behavioral extreme to the other just because she's suddenly an adult isn't always something to be celebrated.

    It's really weird that guys have this attitude that every girl has to be appealing to them, you don't like "provocative girls" that's fine not every girl is. At any given time you have multiple types irl/media. Some are risqué, others are more reserved. If for example Arianna Grande got a face tat tomorrow it wouldn't suddenly signify the downfall of all women heck it wouldn't even represent a significant portion of the music industry but if you found her less attractive that would be fine just as long as you didn't obsess about it like the media did with Miley/Brittany.

Like most reasons why women have to dress "modestly" is because of fucking men, its never about us just wanting to be its always, "its for men's attention", "men won't like you" its so annoying. And we are put into one box as if we represent the entire gender and HAVE to be a good example of what someone else might want.
