      Just one point. When it comes to super luxurious, exclusive and expensive brands they have very strict and almost impossible policies to return an item. Because, when taking about extremely exclusive brands, like Birkin, they make a one of a kind item. Gucci and Louis Vuitton are not exclusive brands anymore. They are high end and expensive, but not exclusive. That's why many "new rich" people have such tacky taste (Kardashians), because they have the money, but they lack style and class. About Jeffrey Star, he/she is trying to compensate all his inner emptiness with luxury, but still extremely shallow person.

      @tiffanyferg The diss at 21 Savage (4:09) seems really under researched he despite having a British citcenship never lived in England and only is British because he was born in Dominica and he moved to Atlanta when he was 7 years old and he really did almost all of what he raps about (i.e. he was suspended in the seventh grade for bringing a pistol to school, he spent his 21st birthday in the hospital after a drug deal gone wrong resulted in him being shot 6 times, ect) anyway I didn't mean to be rude but I thought you should know this and if you do read this I really appreciate your videos 😊.

    Flex culture has really influenced my 9 year old sister. She has become so ungrateful and is very vocal about disliking her gifts. Her teacher had the class do a Christmas class party gift thing and she was literally crying. She looked at all the expensive over the top gifts some of her classmates got and was ashamed of her very pretty gift our mom spent forever looking for. It made me so sad to see my mom upset because she was so excited to gift it to my sister. Those channels are so annoying and I'll never forgive them for how they are impacting young children's' lives and values.

      When I was 9 the most flex culture I experienced was people having a VIP membership on MovieStarPlanet 0.o
      I think it isn't that strange for kids to have a phase where they want literally everything but to think something is not good enough because of monetary value is a new one for me... That sounds alarming.

      @@almamater489 Yep! I'm actually monitoring everything she does on her device with parental controls and I have limits set. But she somehow always finds a loophole. Friends might share things and she'd delete the chats afterwards, weird knockoff apps, and stealing our dad's phone when he's asleep and using his finger to unlock it. My parents aren't very tech savvy but as I'm the eldest I took the responsibility to monitor her. Will continue to work hard!

      I was in middle school when Tommy Hillfiger blew up and rich kids, or ones that could convince their parents to buy the same insanely overpriced plain white or blue t-shirt with just the logo was the thing to be cool, I didn't understand the appeal. I loved Garfield comics and for Christmas my beloved Aunt got me a shirt that looked exactly like it with the same logo but instead it said Tabby Dogkicker with him booting Odie off the logo. I was made fun of for it because it wasn't actually TH and I gave zero fucks, that shirt was a thousand times cooler. One of my biggest regrets was losing it when I cleaned out my closet and it accidentally ended up in a to be donated bag a couple years later 😭

      I was working at a shoe donation drive through girl scouts and I was astonished at 2 things:
      a: how many people were donating actual trash shoes (By which I mean falling apart and couldn't be re-worn, held together with duct tape, caked with various filth, etc)
      b: how many designer BABY shoes we got. I know they're not """""Designer""""" but what stood out to me was a pair of uggs for INFANTS. Probably because this was when they were really in style, but I couldn't believe that someone paid 50$ for baby uggs, when babies lose shoes all the time (my parents gave up and just had me barefoot or with grippy socks if it was cold)

    I'm kinda bothered by the comments not actually seeing the problem and perpetuate the idea of old money vs new money. The actual problem here is mass consumerism and materialism under late stage capitalism, an indication that material products have overtaken society. Old money people should not be praised for not being tacky here -- they are the root cause of this. Through generational wealth and power they have monopoly over media and production, thus our lives. They are the ones who caused this. We shouldn't be glorifying old rich people

      Totally agree with you. I have a story regarding the topic of new money vs. old money:
      When I was a waitress I worked at an event in Cannes, where all the uber rich were invited just for being rich lol (the event was thrown by a credit card company). Anyways I overheard something pretty ridiculous, because an older lady, hung with pretty diamonds came to our boss and was actually complaining, that some of the attandees were not dressed properly in her opinion, hinting to a rapper who came in shorts, flip flops and an hawaiian shirt :D
      From my perspective she looked like old money and criticized the new money, for not being fancy enough. So old money people are not better or more low key, I think you can't generalize there.

      But I honestly kinda regret it. It's not all that much better aside from being faster and having more storage, but getting a $70 phone would have that too since it had been 5 years since I got my last one and technology naturally improves over time.

      Yes, there's a great New Yorker article that talks exactly about how the "Made in Italy" tag doesn't necessarily mean that it was made under fair conditions. There's a lot of ways that luxury fashion houses can cheat and pretend that their clothes and accessories were made in fair and legal factories. The easiest way is to make almost all the production process in developing countries or sweatshops in EU countries, and the last step (putting zippers, tags, final assembly, etc) is made in a legal factory with fair working conditions, thus being able to put the "Made in Italy/Portugal/etc" tag while spending little money.

Haven't bought fast-coffee in 2 years, just have a nice tumbler and make it at home. That 100$ saved per month in an index fund compounded annually @ ~8% yields 2.6k. after 2 years, and will be 57,000k$ in 20 years, after saving 24,000$ on just coffee.

    Flexing originating in hip hop culture was so big because of how black people weren’t ever able to succeed as easily as white or other races 10/30 years ago. So once these young people gained extreme wealth, compared to the lives they were living before hand, they felt the need to show it off and over due the spending because they’ve never had it before. That’s trickled down to this generation especially with the way hip hop and rap culture has become mainstream; people feel that the only way to seem worth something is to show off what they have.

      Flexing is proof that you still have a poverty mindset (for most people). It stems from insecurity most of the time because they’re new money and it’s so sad because I understand how it feels to want to show things off but it just comes off as arrogant to me.

    • @PaolaTheTimeLord
      @PaolaTheTimeLord 4 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      @@alaaye5237 for me excessive flexing is arrogant. flexing every once in a while is whatever because you're not making it part of your personality. we flex all the damn time without noticing. for example, people post on instagram their christmas presents showing off what they received. or how pretty and big their christmas tree is. it's a mindless flex that has already been normalized for the occasion. people have been doing it for decades. another example is someone flexing their watch in the 1950s. we've been doing it for so long. excessive flexing is the problem. we're all guilty of flexing and it's okay cause we're conditioned to do so. if you believe that humans are inherently selfish and vain, that can be another argument that i believe 50/50 on. it's inherent in us to be vain. again, flexing is a symptom of capitalism and how we are conditioned to value material goods. AND if you add poverty into the equation, extreme poverty will yield extreme wealth/flexing habits. the person ONLY knows the extremes. it is another symptom of unchecked capitalism. someone cannot blame the person for behaving the way the economic system has conditioned them to behave. expecting an extremely poor person to behave like they've been middle class all their life is unrealistic. they are more likely to lavish out than be humble about money. there will be exceptions to that generalization too. some poor people that get wealthy are smart with their money investments.

    • @alaaye5237
      @alaaye5237 4 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      That still doesn’t mean the behavior is okay. Flex culture is inherently harmful just like how capitalism is harming American society today. Flex culture is stupid and it stems from the fact that people in society are materialistic. And it doesn’t make it okay, it just leads to other people feeling bad and then they do the same thing and perpetuate the same cycle that is overall harming society. There shouldn’t be a need to brag about how much money you have or how fancy your Christmas tree is. Bragging about that type of stuff just shows that a person feels the need to overcompensate for something that they feel they lack. Which is exactly why I have a problem which Instagram influencers, especially the ones that get into so many scandals and have a majority child audience watching them and consuming their toxic behaviors. Just because people flex all the time doesn’t mean it’s okay and it shouldn’t be normalized. It’s basically a more subtle way of saying “Look I’m better than you because I have this thing that costs x-amount of money.” Having confidence and being happy is different from going around bragging about the amount of money in your bank account or a nice watch. This is exactly why people can’t enjoy the other important things in life. Rich people say money doesn’t matter (it does) but at the same time flex culture stems from valuing money over everything else. Which is a terrible idea that shouldn’t be normalized.

      There is a place and time for it perhaps to compliment the video. However, it can sometimes be a distraction and annoying. I guess it all depends on the content being delivered. Perhaps, two versions of a video should be made to appeal to all like for songs so to speak. One explicit and one clean. One with music and one not with it.
      Bottom line is that you can please some of the ppl some of the time but you can't please all of the ppl all of the time.

      Gucci does have well designed and made clothing but ‘influencers’ don’t wear it because how would everyone know it’s Gucci if it’s not covered in the monogram or brand name. Look at someone like Steve Jobs- famously wore basic black turtlenecks. They weren’t just any old turtleneck, they are custom made by Issey Miyake.
      Honestly as someone who pretty much breathes fashion, this new wave of wearing logo plastered luxury goods is making fashion houses lazy. All they have to do is monogram/excessively brand the cheapest items and then they are laughing all the way to the bank without really having to lift a finger.

    One thing I absolutely hate are those people who go to fast food restaurants and order large extroidinary quantities of food, like 1000 chicken nuggets or 500 tacos just as a joke and then proceed not to eat or donate that food. For one it is very wasteful and is normally just done as a flex or joke, and most of the time none of the food is donated and is just thrown away. Also The people who do this never call ahead so they just swamp these minimum wage workers with 1000 nuggets or 200 hamborgers, and that just backs everything up and puts uneccesary stress on the workers. I know this may not be as bad of type of flex culture thing but its one that I just kinda dislike. It was funny the first time seeing someone do that, but seeing more and more people do it, it just comes off as rude.

      HolandaChiquita it’s more like a reference to god creating the human race... like how in a hierarchy you have social and economic inequality... and then you have racial and gender issues... like white privilege as in blue eyes and blonde hair has been favored by “god” to be the superior race due to the advantages and privileges afforded from birth... so the reason for evil and human suffering and all the problems in the world is because “god” cannot love all of his children(different human races)... which of course is complete BS because all of the problems and human suffering in the world are man made and can be easily solved if humans actually treated life as a gift and chose morality and selfless sacrifice through taking personal responsibility for ones own life and stopped forcing the men woman and children that live amongst us to be paid economic slaves.

Having two aunts who are stylish and treat their clothings properly is so lucky. When they hand out their clothes it's always a delight for me. Their items are one of a kind and give me a lot of options to mix and match. Also, I have a habit of wearing clothes till they are threadbare.
    I'm not trying to say that I'm a role model but I've never understood this craze for Gucci or Prada or LV. Of course, they are of good quality and last for a good time but there are a lot of other items which are way cheaper but also of really good quality and yes, last for a long time.

      we should all keep in mind how every influencer was once broke and struggling now they are all rich and flexing to everyone throwing the words "take this flex bitch i'm fucking richer than you". It's really a disgrace to see influencers throw there flex onto our faces like that. they don't realize how people in this world can be broke and struggling, they just care for to take the money they have earned to throw it into having a "luxurious life" or to take it "to show off". all influencers care to do is spend the millions they have for themselves they never care to even "donate a dollar!" to charity to change someone's life. they are so stuck up and selfish to the point where they flex to the poor. all they do is show off the kind of luxurious life they are living to the public. "bought a brand new car" "loving my new rolex" "flying on my private jet" "thanks mom for getting me this lovely brikin bag" "my mansion is bigger than yours" it's really fucked up, that's what influceners do on social media. they flex on how rich they are. i find it a disrespect to the poor. not that it's anything involved i see that the way they show off is showing how they only give a fuck about there worth.

People used to believe the amount of luck in the world is limited, so you would want more for yourself and less for others. But since everyone was thinking like that, it was wiser not to bring any of your valuables to your neighbors attention, since the neighbor could cast a spell to reduce your luck and make themselves luckier.

    I think that the “logo aesthetic” we are seeing coming from luxury brands is an amazing tactic to market products, build brand identity with a wider crowd and make profits.
    Because genius designers and true innovation in the art of fashion is (generally) not profitable. These people need money to function like everybody else.
    Actually, although I generally avoid logos and ostentatious branding as a personal preference, I think it’s a great start point for people who are becoming interested by fashion to build their knowledge of each brand.
    I think democratizing an art form that has been incredibly elitist for so long cannot be a bad thing.
    This said, I absolutely cringe and stair in horror when thin people from rich countries with comfortable wages and no debt buy fast fashion in huge quantities very often. I believe that with power (money) comes responsabilities (caring for the environment & each other).
    Love your videos 💜💜

    I am italian and I can assure you that here Gucci is seen as one of the lowest fashion category. Like, you will never see an italian wear it, I would not even pay 20$ for one of their bags.. it's just the sad truth. Here we don't like the flex because wearing too much stuff and brands takes away all the chic feeling. Simplicity is the best. Gucci is very famous in the US due to their excessive style.. which is way too much. Plus, they are made with cheap stuff so we don't care about it. To be fair, Gucci was a brand for classy, middle aged ladies with money. Classic and not flashy at all, it was more common that one would think to own something. It's not true at all that it was seen as low tier or that italians wouldn't buy it. It used to be a luxury brand that was somehow affordable compared to today. A belt was 150$, a bag went for 300$. That is, before it decided to sell exclusively to rappers and strippers.

They donate to chairities all the time, help the homeless, and talk about the importance of spreading love instead of negativity. Also, they are all vegan and care about the environment, too. They even make sure that their merch is made from natural materials and by workers who are well paid and working in good conditions. Each time I watch their videos I feel recharged with positive energy and optimism. Even though they are wealthy (thanks to their hard work and dedication working on their brand), they don't flex like others do. Lucas Santos It’s actually very simple to do. However, despite being simple, it’s far from easy (it’s kinda like losing weight in that regard).
      You need to spend less money. Cut back on the rampant consumer consumption that most of us engage in. Forego thaw fancy car, the big house, the expensive restaurants, the shiny electronics, and the lavish vacations. Don’t do things like save on food by foraging through dumpsters, obviously, but cut back on your spending.
      Then, invest every penny you can into incoming producing assets. I like dividend paying stocks myself, but an S&P 500 ETF should suffice if you’re not a finance nerd. The money you’ve saved from cutting your spending should be used to invest.
      Your goal is to build a passive income source that is higher than your expenses to the point of never having to work at a job for money ever again. And voila, your retired!
      Again, though, “simple” is not “easy”. It takes time, hard work, and discipline. You’ve got to be ready to work those extra hours now or start a passive income side hustle if you want to retire decades earlier than the norm. And this may throw off your work-life balance to an unacceptable degree if you’re trying to retire in a span of only a few years. But if you start from your early 20s and you have this plan in mind from the outset, it can definitely work. The math is there and the process is straightforward. Again, though, it’s not “easy”.

    The worst part of flexing is that it's usually about "luxury" items that are actually of terrible to mediocre quality. If people flexed with their tailor-made clothing of a true high quality materials, tailored into a perfect fit by an actual master tailor, fine. That is actual quality clothing and it's very sustainable and ethical to boot. But they are flexing with cheap clothing, made in a cheap factory, with an expensive logo on it. If at least they'd flex with the right products, I'd be semi-okay with it. It will always remain an empty and degenerate culture though.

Yet it costs the same or less than Gucci, which is, I'm sorry, not as well made and not custom made for you. I kinda shrug when I see people wear labels, like, ok that doesn't mean you actually have style or discernment. Gucci is for insecure people.
      Also, you have a very good point about buying sustainable, ethically-made clothing. I wish that became a trend.

    • @pauliedoodle1939
      @pauliedoodle1939 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Exactly right. I don’t think these people realise they are actually buying Gucci merchandise, or designer merchandise.
      If you look at the designers actual clothing, their haute couture clothing lines that flexers don’t know exist because they aren’t plastered in the brand’s name, they are some of the most beautiful, inspiring and expertly tailored garments in the world.
      But since we are in a world where it’s more important that people know you are wearing designer, than actually appreciating the workmanship, these designers churn our merchandise products with their names on it because that is what sells.

    when i was around 9 or 10 watching youtube, i watched videos of girls my age playing with the same dolls i had, but they would make clothes for them DIY and i thought that was the coolest thing ever. i immediately taught myself how to sew and because i didn't have access to a bunch of fabrics, i took out baby wipes from the package and set them out to dry so i could use them as fabric to make my doll's clothes. i was influenced to be creative and resourceful.
    kids now? constantly being surrounded by rapid media overconsumption, flex culture, diet culture, and influencer culture in general is just so harmful! now, it's like you're either internet famous or you're completely worthless. if you're not constantly showing off how attractive, rich, relatable, popular, or talented you are, you're deemed worthless.

    I remember seeing a Gucci store for the first time in Europe on a school trip and a kid on the trip bought a plain ass brown leather belt for over 400 dollars cause he wante to prove he could. It was honestly sad how much he felt validated through what was essentially a leather strap with a hunk of metal in the shape of a G
