  • If you've seen some of my videos you will have seen that I am sceptical about Full Self Driving. And that is with a driver in the car. Elon Musk thinks the big value in Tesla is literally in the car being able to drive itself.
In London we can have a ride in a robotaxi - but only to get to the car park at Heathrow airport. On a closed circuit. I go for a ride to see what it's all about

Believe me. You DO NOT want other people using your car as a robotaxi (unless you want to spend a large amount of time hosing out the spilled drinks, urine, and vomit).
People have no respect for other people's property.

I have been in these pods and they are obviously a special case as they run on their own lanes. Trams come to mind. Cities could have driverless trams on the main roads. It would be a major hassle installing the infrastructure but once it is done then its done. They could have priority over all other traffic and there could be lots of them.

Docklands Light Railway springs to mind.

Sure - video isn’t about the pods, I’m just using them as a backdrop

At the speed they are moving it will take hours to get anywhere that is more than a few hundred yards away!

Why do they need so many cameras?

Love to see a video on buying a high mileage Tesla and see how much of a risk it is with battery degradation, wear and tear etc.

Do those pods stop if there's suddenly an obstacle in the way. 😮 . I suppose we have got used to so many changes lately that one more would make no difference.

Yes they do suddenly stop, that's why they have cameras.

Hi. Can a person from Heathrow Airport terminal go to the rental car company to hire a Tesla? Can you make a video (POV) of the process. Thank you.

I believe the government already has regulations in place making the manufacture responsible when in fsd mode.

Who's liable? Well, I guess that will have to be defined by the legislature of the country fully automated vehicles operate in. Likely to vary widely from Sate to State across the World. In India, the last time I was there - long ago - I was told that the passenger(s) in a taxi could find themselves being held liable for the driver's errors - the thinking at the time being that, after all, they hired him!

Not much different to driverless trains which are already used all over the world. Commuting in an enclosed environment is very very different to driving in the city with pedestrians, emergency vehicles etc. considering the low opinion the industry has off Tesla’s self driving system it’s very unlikely they will be first. The chaos with the robotaxi’s in America yesterday highlights the issues in the real world. I do have a vague memory of Elon musk predicting robotaxi’s going live years ago and as far as I know they aren’t building any. And if people don’t want to drive just get a normal taxi. 😊

Driverless transport vehicles would be great once the kinks were worked out provided they could be relied upon when requested, they were cleaned appropriately, they were operated by Government, really, so that you didn't have to be locked in to a company with their specialised payment system, eg, where they would take you wherever you wanted to go and where they operated in a safe environment in every way. Also, it would be important that they could not be hijacked or hacked (employ Tesla to find the weaknesses).

My thought is that once truly driverless cars are on our roads, the majority would be operated by a 'Taxi' company. Why would you buy your own car, merely for the ride? From experience I would rather trust a properly designed, tested and regulated computer driven car than one driven by some human drivers.
As for liabilities, that is already under consideration by Governments around the world, but not yet resolved.

Not sure if I could cope with someone using my car and leaving it in a filthy state. Already here in Australia, some Uber drivers will not pick up passengers after 9pm at night because of people leaving the car in a mess after getting drunk. One told me it takes hours to clean the mess they make which is a loss in revenue. However, a robotaxi potentially could make less traffic on the roads, and might free up parking in the cities. I wounder if rental self driving cars like this will ever meet towing needs, or will we just need to order a self driving truck to take away rubbish to the dump for you? On a side note, I'm hoping Ian can comment on this in a future video, I've read recent news articles that claim caravans will be extinct because electric vehicles can not tow a caravan. For those that believe it, this is utter b s, The model Y that is featured in Ian's videos will tow a caravan and so will most bigger electric vehicles such as BMW, VW ID4 ID5 etc. The caravans that will become extinct, are the ones that belong to people who are against electric vehicles, and are scared of them, you know who you are! Spread facts not lies and opinions!
