In L4D and L4D2 it really helps when A.I. should out special zombie names. So you know when to switch to molotov that you've saved for that boss monster.
They do that in bfb? I been playing since early release on the 6th/7th and bots tag almost everything constantly and when it's a zombie they usually call that name out.
@@justcallmecage6765 This was my issue playing the beta... it's ok, it's nice to come back to this style of game, but... it just reminds me of L4D2, and L4D2 is still there, has players, has held up for so long, still works fine... why not just go back and play that rather than learn a bunch of new mechanics and differences?
Special ridden spawns really made you feel how badly balanced the game was in beta. There is one map where you spawn in a tunnel and we had 6+ specials spawn in that tunnel and they kept on coming and spat in to the spawnpoint so we had nowhere to go. This game is sometimes unplayable on higher difficulties where you need space to fight. Special ridden sometimes spawn as quickly as normal ridden, making them feel like boring and normal enemies.
There is definitely some issue with balancing, I was trying out the solo campaign and right in the second chapter where the huge Ogre spawns inside the tunnel I got hit with 3 Tallboys, one Retch and one Stinger, in addition to that Ogre stomping around, whole team at full health going in was wiped within 10 seconds and there was nothing we could do. This persisted when playing with other people, the special infected just kept on coming in insane numbers to the point where they hardly felt special but rather as common enemies. Oh yeah, and all that on the lowest difficulty.
On act 3 there there’s a point right before a safe room where LITERALLY 10 specials spawned. 4 crushers, 2 stalkers, 2 stingers and 2 retches. On veteran! I can’t tell you how nay times my squad has made minimal or no mistakes as far as sound traps and still got swarmed by specials. I hope they balance at launch because this game has so much potential.

This feels like one of those games that has a lot of potential but as of now it's not at it's peak. As they tweak things in the game it'll become more fun and enjoyable. The base design if the game is promising. Hopefully it'll become a game that people play for years to come, like a killing floor or even l4d2
I would say just remove the birds. They’re plenty of things that alert hoards and that mechanic makes no sense. An explosive barrel or .50 cal close by doesn’t set them off by walking too close or accidentally shooting them across the map does? I think everyone would be happy if there were no birds in B4B

Great review. I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of changed made from the beta. I don’t know what was completely changed, but I was disappointed in the beta because of technical issues and killing the zombies felt floaty? If that’s the right word to describe it. I don’t exactly know how to describe it, but something just feels better about the full game.
Maybe it's the lack of any real gore in b4b From what I've seen, it's mostly just blood splatters, no gibbing and things of the sort unlike in previous zombie games like L4D2 and even Blops 1-2 Zombies.
IDK maybe im a simpleton, but I'm loving this game. Maybe Ill feel different in a couple weeks but for now, it's got me and my friends excited to play games again. Almost a nostalgic feeling of the days of lan party, beer and pizza.
Yeah I feel the same loving this game mind you I got it on game pass so the feeling of having spent money directly isn't there and I also only like playing these types of games solo same for wwz and l4d 2 so I can't speak to any of that the whole supply thing sucks though I don't want to play with others lol
I was so excited for this game, but when I saw what the pre order tier list I felt like it was going to be like another evolve and I left it. All I really wanted was a multiplayer like left for dead 2 vs mode.
Yeah I didn’t like that either but, it’s still pretty fun in co-op. They went hard with the A.I. Director. It would be cool if they added a mode for a player to take control of the Director, kind of like REsistance.
Over all fun, but honestly with the issues you've said and my general feel for it, I actually feel like the recent world war z game just does a zombie shooter better at this time. A good amount more customization for both weapons/characters and everything just flows a bit better. Granted, that game has had some time to work out its issues, so we'll see when this game has the chance to do the same how it fairs.
Buddy of mine actually works for Turtle Rock and sent me over a free PS5 copy of the Ultimate Edition. I didn't really get into the Beta, as in have a super fun time, but the full release is pretty fun and fixes some of the issues I did have with the Beta. It doesn't feel like L4D, but that isn't a bad thing. I can see it getting better over time, but it is a pretty solid, fun title. With that being said, if I hadn't gotten it for free, I would have waited for a sale.
@@hioxd They can't do that. If they do, it'll make the game automatic GOTY. Everyone knows auto GOTYs are illegal. It's treason and the president hates that stuffs.
I was really hoping for another great 4 player co-op experience, and in general I think they delivered on it but I'm seriously so over the whole zombie esthetic and horde modes. I've been playing zombie games since the first Resident Evil (25 years ago) and while I enjoyed the hell out of them over those years, it feels like such a tired idea anymore - especially for it to be the entire backbone of a game.
@@healfirst875 It's so sad that games story is trash. People that defend it love it for the gameplay, sound and look. Which it's a true masterpiece in that area I fucking loved it! But they fucked up the story on how they delivered it and THAT matters to fans...
@@healfirst875 I recall hearing people tired of the zombie genre when The Last of Us was announced to be about zombies. It's not really the zombies that matter, it's the game. Part II was just nowhere near as good.
I don't really understand this point too much. That's like me complaining that the enemy in a CoD are all humans and that it's a tired trope. The game is more important than the name of the enemy, but I understand wanting, for example, this type of game with dinosaurs or something more creative. It just doesn't seem like a good reason to think less of a game.
It’s weird but I can’t do multiplayer games like this any more simply because of the player base they create. When “builds” and leveling up become the focus it becomes very difficult to find groups of people who don’t care about those things and just play to play. I can already invision toxic behavior like people leaving lobby because someone isn’t running a meta build etc. I’ll be sticking to Left 4 Dead. I have friends who match my play style but sometimes you just want a community that matches that play style too. Great review as always though and I’m sure many people will enjoy this game.
if you don't want a challenge or just want to be a casual you can stick with the lower difficulties... you can't compare l4d to this, if it didn't have a progression system and customization nobody would be interested. wwz, vermintide, killing floor, etc. have difficulties for people who just want a mindless shooter as well as difficulties for people who want an extreme challenge.
@@goosechaser13 Because of when they released, and the expectation of the experience. They are both from an era when people cared about mastering a small set of levels, and they found audiences that enjoyed mastering them. Back for Blood had to make itself stand out as more than just being a better looking L4D. Otherwise its audience would've come and gone, or never come at all, as it'd constantly have to pair up to a masterpiece.
What made L4D(2) boom and reach the success it did was being given away for free so many times and generally sitting at €5 or €15 at most outside of a sale ever. And probably the whole being under the watch of Valve and how tight they were on releasing finished products. If DbD was my kind of thing I would be into it, but at least L4D2 is still alive and not fully drowned in toxicity that votekicks and botspams anyone who makes the slightest mistake in an open versus lobby.
u forgot the modding scene being what keeps L4D2 alive.... and u are 100% wrong about L4D2 not being toxic and full of votekicks.. that is a normal day playing L4D2 lol
It wont have any mod support because of the Publishers.... WB 🤢 However it's a fun game if you get several friends together. Some maps are hard on higher difficultys due to the spawn rate of specials. Get 2-3 Tall boys you better hope you got some space to move around.
The realistic truth: Back 4 Blood feels fun to play with friends, some good gameplay loops but without enough progression and customisation this game will be a complete and forget about game for MANY people as there’s simply not enough replay ability. Would have liked more story to the campaign but games rarely look to do this these days and it’s a shame. The matchmaking is poor because when you search for other players in a specific mid point level it rarely finds anyone (Series X) That being said I like the game and I’m happy to replay the campaign multiple times and unlock the limited customisation options, plus I’m intrigued at what they add with the DLC pack that comes with the Ultimate edition I purchased.
I honestly enjoyed the beta, never had any issues like you had. And if anything figuring I was in each of their beta's they made significant progress with each beta phase. The only issue you didn't talk about? The PVP mode. Where ppl troll, grief, or the matchmaking just isn't working. Nothing feels quite right, when its you vs 4 others and you atleast think, alright, eventually there will be people join. Only for that to never happen. Hopefully something they fixed with launch? Or shortly after.
Not really loving the changes from L4D2. Random "cards" that gimp you aren't something I look forward to. They should have kept going with the L4D formula.
Online only = no buy Solo campaign is a thing, but you can’t unlock certain achievements or get supply points even though you need an internet connection.
Man I got this on gamepass and I was surprised my least favorite part of these team games Is each level is fresh, oh you beat part 1 of act like 1 somehow you lost all your weapons you just had! Not this game it saves your load out thru the campaign, even if you quit it saves progress across all 4 players so you can reload the next day from where you left off all guns and bonuses for all players!!! That part made me already like the game more then average.
I'll give it a one time playthrough but it got boring immediately for me when the beta levels objective was plant 3 bombs on the ship hope there's some more interesting scenarios
Loved L4D and L4D2 and was looking forward to this one to play with friends. After buying it and playing for a few hours with friends I think it's definitely a solid game and is likely going to yield plenty of playtime. It's a little rough around the edges but the important aspects (gameplay mechanics and game design) are good enough to have me giving the devs the benefit of the doubt on this one. A lot of potential here.
This game is really fun, hella challenging really feels like playing left for dead. I have it on gamepass and bought my wife a copy for ps5 so we can play together.
Maybe with game pass, i know $60 is the standard but there's already a lot of zombie games and this one does not seem to reinvent the wheel or anything
The limits on solo play really put a bad mark on an otherwise fun game, and the beta didn’t paint a good picture of this as the first two games had morons spilling vulgarities and other bullshit that made what otherwise should have been a fun experience into a frustrating one. Keep up the good word ACG!
Cards, currency and colour graded items (CCC for short!) It's a CCC-like game (Yes, I'm taking the piss) It's like we're afraid to make a game without any kind of progression system. I preferred entering a level and everything you need is within it along with the unpredictable nature of those games.
What’s wrong with progression? Something to work towards besides just the primary objective is more incentive to play the game and has almost no downsides if done properly.
@@why8298 It's a typical dopamine hit that's put in a lot of games, yeah. And many times innovation is replaced with these systems that's exciting at first, but really just drags out the experience. In Back 4 Blood's case, as stated above I would've much preferred if it was more focused on the survival aspect which worked well with Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. They could've doubled down on that and you'd have a game that was more involving. You know, that constant feeling of always needing to find what you need. With the progression systems I feel like you lose a lot of that unfortunately.
@@GetToWhereYouAre #1 you really don't I feel like you haven't actually played l4d in awhile lol. No bugs perse for me but I get signed out and have to restart the game a lot. Always after a segment is finished I think it's a cloud saving issue or something
Whoever played left 4 dead and thought; "this needs a card system and season pass", should be shot in both balls. £100 for the ultimate edition. Absolute joke. Great review, you've really showed me the importance of sound over the years. It's easy to take solid sound effects, VA and music for granted but it makes such a difference to every game.
Its "free" on gamepass. So im gonna try to get into it. However. The controls from the beta were TERRIBLE on controller. Game felt floaty because of the forced Aim Acceleration and no way to manually adjust aiming and look sensitivity seperately. If they didnt fix that issue. Its not even worth downloading for me. That bullet magnetism and snap on aim is not fun at all
I agree, I tried to adjust the settings so it felt more normal and enjoyable on controller but it just feels awkward and bad. I hope it’s not 60 down the drain
What settings do you guys use? Still feels awful and unnatural on controller. The movement feels vague and awkward still. Aiming is also trash making it hard to focus onto targets.
What makes me sad were the years I spent playing left 4 dead was mostly versus campaign. I just can't stay interested in games like this and Vermintide without playing through the campaigns against players for the extra fun factor.
@@MorrisseyMuse I do agree lol. I skip to certain parts (specifically the cons) and always listen the final verdict. If I'm more interested in that game, I'll watch maybe 70-80% of the video

One of the biggest annoyances is that you can clear a area to search for loot only to have infinite spawning special enemies repeatedly spawn. It takes away from any real reward and reason to search since you will burn through more recourses then you find. And dont even get me started on the "Horde Timer" in some maps. Just horrible.
Well...from what I've played, I enjoyed playing and had fun with friends, but...it didn't make me want to play more, I love L4D2, and honestly I think this game doesn't evolve the formula, it just modernizes it in some aspects (like, aiming), I play L4D2 and see the zombies' reaction to each shot, the animations are just out of this world they're so good, and the maps? they are fantastic! and then I see B4B with super banal animations and linear maps, zombies look like rocks when they die...generic ...I'm a person who cares about details, and this "detail" for me is crucial in a zombie game, and that's why I love playing L4D2, for its high realism...

This review was higher quality and more well thought out than the game itself. I'll try the game on game pass but no way in hell would I ever pay any more than 15-20 bucks for this.
This game is a gold mine for L4D modders. Imagine a ton content ranging from weapon models, character models and even campaigns gonna get added to L4D by modders.
Because the map and special designs would make a campaign VS mode heavily weigh in favor of the defenders to the point where you probably wouldn’t have any fun as the attacking team. Maybe one day they will make a new mode with balance or maps specific for that mode but currently it wouldn’t work very well with current balance/maps.
I know it’s not L4D but hear me out. I just want those fun vibes that L4D gave me that made me and my friends want to play over, and over again because it was so much fun. This game just feels meh. Idk if it’s just me I wanna see others opinions most definitely. At the moment this game doesn’t have that spark (yet) atleast.
I have to say this… Comparing this to L4D2 looks like a bad joke. L4D(2) look way more polished, way more reactive and ‘alive’. The music of l4d, the iconic characters, the world & level design and the enemies design are so great, so iconic! It’s just straight up amazing! This game, while I’m glad it exists, seems like a failed attempt of recapturing the greatness of L4D(2), which still stands tall above its competitors besides it’s age.
He's not going to tell you to buy a game that needs fixing. If devs would put out finished products he could recommend them and boost their sales by a ton but alas he as a TRUSTED reviewer must say wait.

Yeah, I have no idea why they decided to go for some round based, arena, deathmatch mode that will probably die in a few months. I would have bought it if it had versus.
Haven't purchased yet but, as a massive fan and longtime player of the L4D series I hope they can iron out the kinks and maybe get a Team Versus style mode integrated to help the longevity. I found the coop in Beta to be really fun. Need some more time with it though.
I am surprised that nobody noticed that zombie physics and gore is just bad and outdated in this game. There is no satisfaction in killing zombies after a few hours. This should be a priority in this kind of game...
Yeah it's so arcadey, there was something so satisfying about mowing down a horde in L4D or pumping bullets into one zombie and the zombie reacting as such. I had to turn off the crosshair to a dot and switch off hitmarkers in B4B it's so goofy. The special zombies are the worst and the boss makes no sense, doesn't even resemble a human
I feel like the thing that made L4D thrive was freedom with accessibility to infinite community made maps and stupid mods. This looks fun but i feel like it lacks that classic early 2010 steam game charm
I honestly think with the price of triple A games now, alot of them that release will be wait for a sale unless on gamepass. Great review as always though
I would get this if it had split screen, me and my lil bro play left 4 dead 1 and 2 all the time, no split screen in this game is a real kick in the balls
Honestly, swarm was a lot more fun than I was expecting. Still, they should add pvp campaign for additional content in the future. Game is a lot of fun, and the difficulty between difficulty levels actually feels decent, easy is almost too easy now. Steam has the best reviews, almost every review is totally accurate in my opinion from everyone.
I think there’s a fairly good chance a versus campaign mode could be added, wouldn’t be too difficult to implement. Just add longer spawn times for special variants and randomise what variant you spawn as.
Played on Series X, started Oct. 7 - 7am. 1 crash. This game is a load of fun. If you liked L4D it’s an excellent successor. The guns feel great, the card system is innovative, and the supply lines give you a reason to replay. People forget how bare bones L4D really was because the experience of playing L4D’s Arcadie style over an over was just too fun to put down. If you are fan of that style, B4B innovates in the right ways to have an edge over it’s predecessor in the Co-op only category. My only complaint is they took Take A Break out. 8/10. ACG is the best! L4D is better. 🙌☀️
I think my biggest gripe about this release is still the card system implementation. In L4D 1&2, you just start up a campaign and play through it. that's it. The only downtime is literally between map-chapters, and if you restart due to failing. In Back 4 Blood, there is SO MUCH MENUing. Between each and every freaking map-chapter. Press F, select this, press F again. Press this to ready up, and wait. And that's if you and your mates all load together with no hinderances. This game is a XBoxGamePass title through and through. Still unsure if the AI director is as balanced here. I don't think B4B will be replacing Left 4 Dead 2 anytime soon. Especially with the lack of mod support and "good" offline modes.
My biggest thing with this game is they are baking on the card system and the fact that it’s the “type of game” people have been waiting for. The characters, levels, infected design just seem very generic which is opposite of L4D. Just my opinion tho.
It's not Left 4 Dead though. It's a new IP called Back 4 Blood so they can do whatever they please with it. Sounds like you want a Left 4 Dead 3. In that case go and ask Valve to make it. I can tell you haven't played the game because the card system is just an RPG tree mechanic. You upgrade your character as you progress to compete with the director. It's actually very fun and rewarding.

I was disappointed about that too. But after playing multiple hours of this, I can see why devs abandoned campaign vs because its going to be a total mess of balancing issues.
@@hwanpaulo That depends because L4d2 has balancing issues as well but look at how fun it is. Unless the balancing issues are far beyond of L4d2 balance than they really don't have a reason not to have it.

This feels like one of those games that has a lot of potential but as of now it's not at it's peak. As they tweak things in the game it'll become more fun and enjoyable. The base design if the game is promising. Hopefully it'll become a game that people play for years to come, like a killing floor or even l4d2

IMO , I feel like they did fix some stuff from the beta it's feels more smooth and less frame drops and less lag .
The full game will most likely always be better and look better than the beta I don’t know why people are so Surprised
Maybe it's the lack of any real gore in b4b
From what I've seen, it's mostly just blood splatters, no gibbing and things of the sort unlike in previous zombie games like L4D2 and even Blops 1-2 Zombies.
IDK maybe im a simpleton, but I'm loving this game. Maybe Ill feel different in a couple weeks but for now, it's got me and my friends excited to play games again. Almost a nostalgic feeling of the days of lan party, beer and pizza.

You nailed it... simpleton, is perfect.
I was so excited for this game, but when I saw what the pre order tier list I felt like it was going to be like another evolve and I left it. All I really wanted was a multiplayer like left for dead 2 vs mode.
Not happening, maybe if they look at their sales but they said they have no plans for Campaign Vs. It killed a lot of hype for a lot of people.
In my opinion, the b4b multi is great.
Yeah I didn’t like that either but, it’s still pretty fun in co-op. They went hard with the A.I. Director. It would be cool if they added a mode for a player to take control of the Director, kind of like REsistance.
I'm glad the game doesn't have any stupid campaign vs. They can just focus on fulfilling great PvE content. It's always PvPers who cry the loudest.
No Vs mode is why most I know have no interest in the game.
I love this game! 2 years later and I'm still playing this game

Dude that's ridiculous 3rd person shooters are wack
Buddy of mine actually works for Turtle Rock and sent me over a free PS5 copy of the Ultimate Edition. I didn't really get into the Beta, as in have a super fun time, but the full release is pretty fun and fixes some of the issues I did have with the Beta. It doesn't feel like L4D, but that isn't a bad thing. I can see it getting better over time, but it is a pretty solid, fun title.
With that being said, if I hadn't gotten it for free, I would have waited for a sale.

I've been playing zombie games since the first Resident Evil (25 years ago) and while I enjoyed the hell out of them over those years, it feels like such a tired idea anymore - especially for it to be the entire backbone of a game.

I don't really understand this point too much. That's like me complaining that the enemy in a CoD are all humans and that it's a tired trope. What made L4D(2) boom and reach the success it did was being given away for free so many times and generally sitting at €5 or €15 at most outside of a sale ever.
After buying it and playing for a few hours with friends I think it's definitely a solid game and is likely going to yield plenty of playtime.
I would get this if it had split screen, me and my lil bro play left 4 dead 1 and 2 all the time, no split screen in this game is a real kick in the balls
It’s an unbelievable omission, must be a performance constraint
@@KevBoy3D It's still rooted in last generation though isn't it? . Even though it is enhanced on new consoles and PC obviously compared to those.
They took Take A Break out?! :(
solid reviews, love it
I think my biggest gripe about this release is still the card system implementation.
ACG puts in the work and I fucking love it.
They're doing what IGN and Gamespot haven't done in over a decade
I dont understand how Turtle Rock Studios is still standing. This is a hack job.
Been having a blast since last week!!!!
@@azca. The devs are the ones that CALLED THEIR GAME the spiritual successor to L4D2 so you're wrong, he's completely right to call it that and expect it to be like L4D.
@@azca. damn you sound butthurt by the fact this game is garbage. its generic and boring. On gamepass it's fine but for $60, hell no.
Giving you the facts is being butthurt? LOL. I'm having a blast with this game. Nice try 😂
@@mjay6245 You don't know what a spiritual successor is clearly. And you're clearly a L4D fanboys wearing nostalgia glasses. New IP, their rules. You can argue semantics all day but you'll never get a L4D3. This is the closest you're gonna get buddy. Good luck
The game is fun. But L4D2 and Vermintide 2 already do so many things better (atmosphere, audio cues, horror elements, enemies) And Darktide is on the way. Hard to justify the purchase for me
I'm just glad I'm going to get this on Gamepass lol
Isn't it just a $60 version of LFD2.
@@mikelarry2602 don't insult L4D2 by comparing it to this meager and basic horde shooter lol. Either way, game pass will give this game some longevity, or at least a larger (be it temporary) playerbase than usual.
@@flipsvstheworld Is it better than LFD2 ?
@@flipsvstheworld L4D2 is way more of a basic horde shooter than B4B…..
@@mikelarry2602 Hell no b4b is a poor spiritual sequel to L4d2
I love how you chose THIS specific scene to start the video with 😂
What do you mean
The Devs saying that there are no plans for Campaign Vs killed a lot of hype for me. Thankfully it's on gamepass otherwise this would have been a pass for me.
I was disappointed about that too. But after playing multiple hours of this, I can see why devs abandoned campaign vs because its going to be a total mess of balancing issues.
@@hwanpaulo That depends because L4d2 has balancing issues as well but look at how fun it is. Unless the balancing issues are far beyond of L4d2 balance than they really don't have a reason not to have it.
not gonna talk about solo???
Back 4 Blood seems like a low budget version of Left 4 Dead that's not interesting nor fun to play, not even in the slightest bit. To make matters worse, the game has more than its share of issues, as you've already pointed out. This one is an easy pass as a result. Thanks once again Karak for another honest and unbiased review. I really appreciate it!
I think its amazing when you look at how they made left 4 dead, and then how much they didnt put in this game that they had in their other game.
Looks like a clunky and far less polished L4D2, which is saying something when L4D2 came out 13 years ago.
Thank you sir for this awesome review! Have a great day!
Is it just me or has there not really been a solid "buy" game in the last few months? I get the pandemic really messed people up, but it feels like things are not going well for the industry as a whole. I hope that devs can find their feet again soon.
Theres been alot of games that are a for sure buy. But I guess thats all individually taste and choice
They haven’t for years. Every publisher seems to be shitting out half arsed games lately full of bugs and disappointment
For me it is in the last few years. The major games are broken, turned into crappy live service or just generic. At least indie devs are going strong.
Played the beta with friends, and enjoyed it. Not worth full price to me, but at 25% to 50% off, I would pick it up and encourage my friends to do so as well.
