  • I've worked with a lot of rescue dogs, I have one of my own, and I'm fostering a dog right now. These are the common mistakes that I see people make when they first adopt a dog, and it can sometimes turn people off rescue for good. Let's not let that happen!

Not too sure why nobody has done up a list yet, but...
5 Common Mistakes for Rescue Dog Owners
    1. Treating it like it's a pet dog
    2. Not considering possible additional medical costs
    3. Thinking that the dog will settle in overnight
    4. Flooding the dog with new experiences
    5. Not starting the training soon enough

  • @ohhmaii
    @ohhmaii 2 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    1. Don't yell- you don't know what trauma they have
    2. Find out if they are cat/kid/dog friendly- try to get a good fit
    3. Be patient- even potty trained dogs will have mistakes

Do you have any idea if a rescued stray dogs born in the mountains and rescued at age 4 months old, now 1 year old, who is VERY ferociously growling at my cats the second they get close to the crate she lives in for now (This is a very large crate), can ever accept the cats.
She arrived a week ago. At first she was terrified by everything and everyone and stayed in the same corner of her crate for 4 days without even urinating and defecating and eating only on the third day,. But now she enjoys going for walks with me, she licks my hands i can hand feed her, she likes my dog and they walk together but the second the cats are around she turns into a beast and seems ready to bite them if the cats get any closer and would definitely attack them without the fence between them.
I of course want to keep her but i absolutely refuse to put my cats at risk, and i can't separate them forever, because i live in the mountains of northern Tokyo, it is extremely hot and humid and they need to be together in the same climatized room in summer or they would die from heatstroke. But i can't be home constantly to supervise them 24/7 either and i don't want to find a gazpacho of whatever is left of my cats when i get home.
Do you have any idea if rescued stray dogs who hate cats can eventually change, or is this a recipe for disaster and i am ineluctably heading toward something i will regret.
I can still find a new owner for this dog. I love her but i want what is best for her and my other pets and don't want to make any of them miserable, because i selfishly want to keep them all together.
What's your opinion on the matter ?
I called a dog trainer but the earliest appointment i could get was 3 weeks from now, and my trial period ends in a week, then i have to make a decision and either keep the dog or give her back.

@@l..l_ Thank you very much for the comment. I decided to keep the dog. So far she lives in a very large crate i made for her which is half the living room. Inside of it she has her house, her litter behind it , her water and her food and lots of toys. She comes out of the house in the morning when i wake up because she is hungry, and i use the opportunity to harness her and take her for a walk, which she half enjoys half dreads, but at least she does her business outside twice a day and doesn't need to hold it. So far the cats are kept i on the second floor of the house or in the guest bedroom on the first floor and when the dog is harnessed she will walk past the cat on her way out of the house for her walks and so far she is not growling anymore and she is sort of getting used to my and allow me to harness her without too much fear. But she is clearly still very uncomfortable and hasn't shown any evidence of affection toward me, but she seems to really like my other dog, the small one and i can leave them together for a few minutes without worrying, and take them both for a walk every evening. She prefers her evening walks when it is dark. Unfortunately three days ago a large japanese civet called Hakubishin crossed the road, well, jumped from one side of the road to the other right in front of us and it sent the dog into absolute terror, so not more walks after dark for now.
At home she spends 23 hours a day in her house and only comes to drink, eat and for her twice daily 30 minutes walk.
I really thought about giving her back, but she really hasn't done anything bad (...yet...) and i felt like it would be such a waste to give her up because maybe she will eventually get used to me and the cats and life outside the house and will stop jumping every time a sparrow flies by the window or a 10 year of schoolboy rings the bell of his/her bike on her way to school. And she is truly beautiful and has this bambi eyes you just can't send back to the shelter.
I have no idea what the future will be, but she is now registered under my name and i am 100% responsible for her, so no turning back.
The cats are safe and will remain safe for as long as it takes and hopefully one day when she gets used to me i will try to introduce her to them. One tiny step at a time. So far i just want her to rest and eat properly and understand that she is forever safe and that nobody will harm her.
She never really had a name until now but i decided to call her Ineko which means rice ear because she has exactly the same colour and because this is Japan and she was born in the mountains of Shikoku famous of its rice field terrace and because she's got a "broken" ear which refuses to stand so Rice Ear , Ine plus Ko because she's a lady !
Thank you very much for your comment, i would never buy an animal, unless it is to save him. Sadly my other dog is a toy poodle mixed with a pomeranian (the opposite of dogs i am interested in) but i used to walk in front of this pet shop on my way to work every day last year and this dog was 300 000 yen (3000 dollars) and then the price started getting down as the dog got older, to the point that the dog's price after 6 months in this tiny cage was 400 dollars, and i was terrified of what would happen to this dog if nobody adopted it (this is Japan and nothing good was going to happen) so i just walked in and bought it, but made massive scene and told the seller that i will give them 40 000 yen, not a penny more , would not buy any of their BS insurance policies and other extra fees, and walked out with that little black ball of hair and she's been mine every since. She also doesn't really like the cats but the cats are bigger and heavier than herand easily avoid her. The other two cats are also rescued, one i found on the parking lot of my work place and the other which my vet was giving out after it had been found on the street in a shoebox with its 6 siblings. that was the last one so i got him. So here is am now with my four pets knowing that i will never have holiday outside tokyo for more than two days if i can find a pet sitter and visiting my family and friends back home in my country is going to be a challenge but that's okay with the pandemic (Covid and Monkey Pox) i have no intention to get on a 13 hours flight home any time soon.

It's my third night with my girl ( "Yua" it's japanese) she was in a shelter with majority of cats. She instantly made a connection with me when she saw me. I live 2 hours away from the city, she was wonderful in the trip back home she was just on her bed the whole trip. After that when we got home I gave her a tour of the house making sure I always went in the room first and then letting her know to come in. Later that night when she woke up from a little nap after our first walk she would stop on the door and watch me give her permission to come in. She stood in front of me and my bed and I told her to come up, which she did. She was shy at first just laying herself around my legs and such. I went to sleep and when I woke up she snuggled under the sheets where I was. The second day together she just follows me everywhere, she is very protective of me when we see strangers on our walk and very sweet when we get back home. I work from home 8 hours straight and she just naps and eats when I am at it. The most surprising thing is that when I took her on her first walk and told her "Common let's go, let's do some peepee and some poop" and she started sniffing and did her business (#1 and #2) she did the same on day 3 and it's asking me to play more openly. I am diagnosed with depression, anxiety and depersonalization... And all this 3 days I haven't felt like that. She is helping me as much as I am doing with her. She is the one that rescue me.

I rescued an ex racing greyhound about 4 months ago and she's still settling in, still super timid. She spent her first 2 years of life in a racing kennel and had never been inside a house before. She came from across the country on a plane to the rescue where she stayed for a few months before I brought her home. So her life wasn't exactly stable. I taught her where her bed was and took her out on lead to go toilet every couple of hours. She picked it up super quickly. But she was scared of everything and still gets overwhelmed. We had to teach her to walk up and down the stairs and put tape on the glass doors so she didn't run into them, as she had never seen glass doors before. It's been a hell of a change for her but we are slowly working on her confidence and she is improving.

I’ve had several rescue dogs over the years and each one is different. They all had mange of some kind and worms, some so full of worms they almost died. My current dog I picked up was very pregnant and at less than 40 lbs had 11 puppies! She then had to be spayed later plus vaccines and is positive for heart worms so that gets very expensive. One of my rescues was a prior cruelty case and she is very afraid of brooms and vacuums and things like that. You never know what you’re going to encounter so be prepared. But good job adopting a rescue, they do know you are trying to help them!

We feel they haven't been allowed into homes and they are reluctant to leave their safe spaces. But it gets better week by week. They are understanding more and more that they have the run of the house. Lettie has had such trauma from men that she is still very wary of me but even then I get a big wag when she sees me. This is sad and heartwarming at the same time

Great video. I always had rescue dogs. They all took few months to get used to a new house and the routine, as you said. They were all timid and scared at the beginning. My last rescued girl, which I adopted 6 months ago, was a real challenge. She was wild and kind of rough on the edges, haha. She was overwhelming, which I did not expect. I thought, I was an experienced dog owner and she proved me wrong. She is a Mountain Cur, a type of hunting dog with big jaws and muscles and a very high level of energy. We had to work through a lot of issues with her. But we never gave up, because I knew she just needed some love, time, and patience. Her behavior is still a "work in progress", but she is so much better now. I think, she was abandoned, because, when we got her, she was a year old already large, strong 55 lb pure muscle dog, who thought that playing meant painfully biting the owner. She had soft paws, which meant nobody was going for walks with her. She also held the pee for a long time, which for me meant she was probably locked up in the cage. So, we had the explosion of happiness, rowdiness, and just pure craziness for the first two months. But, I noticed that when I gave her some structure and taught her to be obedient, she really listened and wanted to be a good girl. She is a sweetheart. We bonded already and she is very attached to both of us. We are active, constantly hiking or doing something, so she adjusted to this quickly. We still are working through some separation anxiety issues and some attention seeking problems, but she's getting better every day.
Thank you for saving your lovely dog. It's so rewarding to see them change. I think, the rescues are the best dogs ever, because they know how bad life can be and are eternally grateful for saving them.

I am fostering a rescue, 3 year old rat terrier mix with a background of neglect. We are on day 4. He came from an apparently loving foster family he lived with for the last year but he is very 'shy' and scared of people. I wasn't able to give him a tour of the house because being leashed terrifies him and he tries to run away (and has succeeded many times in slipping away from me but is contained by the property). He doesn't seem to like affection or attention (he tolerates pets but it's hard to tell if he's just submitting to it because he's afraid) so the only way to reward him is treats. I am trying to enforce the rules for potty breaks, etc, but he runs away from me when I come near. If I go down the stairs, he runs back up. Etc. I think it might be because I keep trying to pick him up so I can teach him the rules! But most of the time he wriggles away and just runs away from me! Needless to say we haven't left the house to go on any walks or anything. Finding this pretty challenging, I hope that one day he will be less afraid!

I got my 7 year old rescue chihuahua mix a month ago. High anxiety and stress and fear of people and noise. He was in 2 previous homes and in the rescue 2 times. The rescue only had a little information about him which indicates possible abuse, neglect and lack of socialization when he was a puppy. I did go to the rescue the week before and spent an hour and half with Junior in a room and him taking treats and walking him outside and then he let me pet him. It's been a little progress daily over a month but because I see daily progress so I have hope. Vet put him on probiotics for his tummy and hopefully when his tummy feels better he will relax more. He does okay with another person, if they don't look at him and just ignore him or talk softly and not try to pet him. I can now pet, pick-up, hold, walk play and talk to him and he does good on a walk and will play with a couple toys ocassionally, but is afraid to be around people in a group but one quiet person is okay. He seems to like female dogs. Too bad I'm only allowed 1 dog where I live because a little female friend might help him. Hoping to see a big improvement over the next 2 months.

My mistakes with my rescue pup were leaving him too much to himself, he howled from loneliness and howled when he didn't see me at night. I used to put him in the bathroom with the door closed for thé noise but all I had to do was put him somewhere he could see me. He was very anxious of his environment until after his first walk. The walk didn't go smoothly the first 10 minutes (had to drag and ignore him a little) after that he started enjoying the smells and sight. Once back home he was very playful and curious in that same environment. Being a rescue is not An excuse not to teach it what's expected.
My second rescue was already 1.5 years old, the first walk went similar. Now, a very sweet Pinscher mix indoors, still An attitude outdoors. Things are taking way longer with him but most he does really really well.

We rescued our dog Beaux back in Oct. from a high kill pound. The city had found him wondering the streets so his background is completely unknown. He had been there for weeks already and seemed to give up hope on himself (didn’t attempt to interact without anyone). When we first brought him home he was recovering from his neutering, had kennel cough, had his own poop smeared across his underside, and showed signs of previous abuse. Externally his paws are torn up and is missing nails while internally he is scared of all noises, men, and meeting other dogs. IT WAS A ROUGH COUPLE OF WEEKS. After torn up blinds, shredded belongings, and multiple accidents inside, here we are! He’s still working through his anxiety and trust issues, but he’s come so far from where he first started. That’s the biggest motivator, knowing this wonderful and loving dog has finally been given a chance.

We saw the plea on the internet on Friday the city hall was closed till 9 on Monday both city hall and the vet closed at noon. It was a 2 hour drive. We arrived at 11:30 discovered the vet where she was 12 miles away. We arrived 11:52. So what do you name a dog rescued 8 minutes before death. So I just adopted a medium size dog that has trust issues previous owners tied dog up for days at a time to a tree and never groomed it. Fur was very matted. The people said that too many people passed Marley up and they were no longer going to adopt. My thought was that they were going to destroy the dog.
So I told my sister Gary I would adopt a dog and I will come and pick it up on Wednesday. I have a four bedroom house no kids and went out but all his toys food everything the dog needs I just need advice on how I need to treat this dog I want him to have a good home and I want them to be loved so I just need advice and what I need to do I haven’t had a dog in over 40 years so I’m kind of rusty any advice would be greatly appreciate it.

My cousin and I are in a 62+ and two weeks ago today rescued a 5 yr old Havanese from a puppy mill. Physically she is good. Think it was more that there was no touch contact. Never had a toy. Anyway my problem is she is so afraid of me. We're grateful that she really took to my cousin, wants to be in her lap, lets her put the leash on, lets her pick her up. Molly is still skiddish re any noise or movement. Even the act of crossing your legs puts her on scary alert. I give her the good treats which she'll take if my cousin is in the room. I can walk her after my cousin puts on the leash and walks out the door. We'll walk and come in, but I can't take off the leash. 3 months…..

We've had our beautiful french bulldog for 16 weeks, she's 5, she's been kept outside & used repeatedly as a breeding bitch, she lived in a crate in a shed, no love, no name, no known date of birth, her ears look like cornflakes due to having the bitten as she fought for her dinner, her space, her bed she's also lost some front teeth, her breeder surrender 12 dogs but still has a thriving business! 😥 Then she spent 2 months with a lovely foster lady, then came to us.
She wasn't toilet trained but luckily it was summer so doors were open, we're happy with where she's up to, perhaps one accident a week at night now we've got rid of the crate, she's an amazing little mite, now she's settled & realises that she's staying forever!
    But, there's always a but!!
She hoards all her toys, she has 2 bed sites, one near my hubby's side of the sofa, the other across the lounge, my adult son will try to engage her in play, she'll snatch the toy, run to her sofa bed, then go back to snatch the next thing he touches. She also does this with my daughter's Rottie when he comes over, he just wants to play, have fun, share the toys, but she grabs them from him & scarpers!! I do try to take them back off of her & return them to Moose, but she'll just get it later!
How do we stop the guarding of what she's as high value stuff like her toys, I'm having Moose for a week next year, I don't want any fights or upset! Thank you for your great video.

When a rescue dog is as reactive as mine then there's nothing you can do to help them, you just have to deal with them until they die. Mine was given to the shelter when he was 4 by his original owners then was adopted by a family and given back to the shelter after 5 months. I don't blame them at all, it's a life ruiner for sure.

I know this video is 4 years old but i am going to try the question anyway.
You mentioned that it may take up to three months for a rescue dog to show its true colours.
    Does this go both ways.
Could a dog be very insecure and afraid or even a tad aggressive at first and then become a loving, soft creature after a while ?
And does this mean that a dog which is insecure and afraid at first could, once comfortable, become really aggressive especially over other pets in the house, and could this be its TRUE nature revealing after a few months.
I am saying this because i have a 1 year old female dog which is a rescue dog from a breeder (she was born with a leg problem and was going to be thrown away by the breeder so i adopted her), a 6 year old male cat rescued after being found in a box when he was a few days old, a female cat 13 years old found on the parking lot of my former working place when she was a couple of months old, and now i found this 1 year old dog at the shelter. She was born in the mountains of Shikoku Japan (i live in Tokyo) found by the rescue shelter when she was 2 months old, until then she lived by herself in a pack. She was dewormed, got all her shots, cleaned and fed properly and even housetrained, and now she is up for adoption. I decided to adopt her because in Japan dogs over a year old are seldom adopted and end up in a very sad place where death comes very quickly so i really want to adopt her.
But she is a stray dog, born and partially raised in the mountains, in a pack, who had to fight for her life, and although the people taking care of her assure me that she is the loveliest dog, i saw her fighting with another male dog when i visited the shelter.
Is there a risk that after three months, she could become really aggressive and cause a risk to my other pets. I am not particularly afraid for myself, but more for my pets who are all quite small and short in size while this dog i want to rescue is big and quite tough.
If you could answer these question (or anyone else who has had the same experience), that would be much appreciated.

You need to interview dog trainers who are experienced at this (integrating foster dogs with other pets). Hire one you think fits best. It will be worth the money (most offer a package).

@@smoofollowingqalroundthewo206 Thank you very much. She seems to be getting along with the dog and she licks our hands and go on walks without too much problem, but she growls and shows her teeth the second one of the cats is around. She truly metamorphosis from a lovely dog into the beast of the gevaudan !
Not sure yet how this is going to work out with the cats. I called a professional who will come to evaluate the situation soon and we will take it from there.
I can't put my cat's life at risk, cats were the first in the house and they will not compromise very easily so i do hope the new comer will understand that this is not the mountains anymore and cats are not prey to chase but companions.
Interesting to see how dogs are pack animals and she immediately accepted the other dog but won't accept the cats.
      Fascinating animals.

I never punish my dog. Dogs don't understand and don't feel guilty. If he barks or does something I don't want him to do, I say Ack, ack, or sssssh, sssssh and jerk the leash once and it works or at home I just make the sound. I NEVER ever yell or hit !!!!!! Dogs are pack animals an we have to establish ourself as the pack leader (alpha dog) and they will follow us and look to us for leadership . Be patient.

The rescue adoption person brought my dog to me. I already had a bed for him near where I sit , some toys, his water bowl and a crate for when I go out. (The rescue said he was used to being in crate sometimes an didn't bark much at all. He didn't like going in the crate ( but I do need to go out and live in an apartment) I found a treat he likes (more than chicken !) and he only gets that treat when he goes in the crate and now he's less resistant to going into the crate. I also found dog anxiety music on You Tube that plays for hours and I put that on while I'm not home. When I come home, I don't make a fuss. I just open the crate door and walk away. After a few minutes I take him outside. When I leave, I put him in the crate with the special treat and a toy and leave with no fuss. I never use the crate as punishment.

My rescue dog seriously bit me, drawing blood, when I was mopping up spilled water. He tried to bite me the day before when I was picking up rubbish and when I pushed him away he moved in for a second attempt. Prior to these two incidents he bit me and drew blood whilst I was trying to stop him from attacking children on bikes.
He has very grave issues which we were not informed of at the time we purchased him. The woman who sold us the dog doesn't want anything to do with the problem and so I am considering euthanasia because I can't have an unpredictable dog in the household.
The dog is an Amstaff mix, beautifully proportioned and a very handsome creature indeed. He's playful and learns quickly (only 3 days to teach him a harness was better than the choker he came with which was tight around his neck) but despite gaining his trust I show the war wounds of a dog that has been badly treated in the past.
    He's just 2.5 years old. That's tragic.

@@Dylanesque fir the first question, maybe try finding a behavioralist that specializes in agressive behavior. if it's not clear, try calling and asking if they deal with aggressive dogs often. if you can find video & photo evidence of the specialist at work, thats even better. So is client feedback. Always go for a balanced or positive reinforcement trainer !
To the second question, I'm not sure what else to say besides keep your pet and family at a distance so neither have the chance to get hurt if unpredictability is an issue for you. make sure to note the issues you have so when in contact with a specialist you'll have them laid out.
also, instagram has many dog trainers that may be willing to answer direct messages or comments under their posts! if you can find some who deal with agressive dogs more, maybe they'd be up to answer any questions! hope this helps a bit😅
and sometimes its okay for behavioralists to get the opinions from fellow behavioralists. But if that's not something you're comfortable with, like i said above, find someone who works more with agressive dogs

We got Chip last year in January. My first ever comfort dog.
    1. We treated him like a dog and we empathized with him. We figured he'd be happy to be in a stable home but overall unsure of the particulars. One bathroom trip on a leash showed us that he definitely had never been in a home before so we went forward from that assumption.
    2. You ain't fucking kidding. Even for a healthy dog, he's still costly. Disability doesn't pay much. :P
    3. We knew when to crack the whip. Distraction training got the destructiveness out of him, for example. We only came down on him for the big stuff (like eating my roommate's nachos because his dumb ass didn't put them far enough away from the edge of the counter.) Enough time and repetition and he figured it all out.
    4. Hard to flood the boy when I can't drive. Just stable routine except when it's not and even then he knows on Wednesday, people come over and chaos happens. Plus I have roommates and my wife who will drive him to the dog park and the like. But they work so it was very drip-fed.
    5. We ascertained his intelligence and went from there. We started on the absolute no-no's. No getting on the counter or in the trash. No destructive. No aggression (got lucky there.) Then we went backwards to leash training, no barking, recall, all that dot i cross t bullshit.
Hey! From knowing nothing, we did pretty good!
