  • It is so easy to lock eyes with a cute pup at the shelter and bring it home on the same day, but that is THE WORST way to go about adopting a dog! Working at an animal shelter, I see stories like this EVERY DAY, and the dogs often end up returning to the shelter.
    This is why, in this video, I want to fill you in on the 5 most common reasons I see people surrendering, or returning rescue dogs so that you can know what you're getting into before adopting a dog. I also go over the pros and cons of adopting a dog, and then I give you some AMAZING rescue success stories from the community here at In Ruff Company.
    Oh, also, mid-filming I got a text from the shelter that my favorite dog got adopted because of the video I made about her, so there's a second in this video where I fall apart from happiness :)

    I had a foster pup I named Mochi -- a 3 month old German Shepherd with a messed up eye which everyone assumed was from an injury but turned out to be a rare form of cancer. The breeder dumped her on me in the shelter parking lot as the shelter was closing for the day. I turned her in because she needed to be seen immediately. I was able to get rescue backing and long story short, after several procedures she was diagnosed with a super rare aggressive cancer. The rescue was able to raise the funds for treatment and she was adopted by her oncologist/surgeon's BFF. Best outcome one could have hoped for.

    I can’t understand people who abandon their dogs. I’m 33. I’ve wanted a Doberman since I was 13, and promised myself when I bought my first place, I’d adopt one. Well, two decades in the making, but my first house is nearly completed and even though they don’t know it yet, somewhere out there is the dog I’ve been waiting for my whole life. I can’t wait to meet them!

    My family has been trying to adopt a dog from a shelter, but every time we get close, we’re told that the dog is no longer available. I’m starting to get a feeling that it will be a long time until we find our new family member, but I know it will all be worth it. I hope we find him or her soon ❤️

      Bianca Grava We had the same problem and a lot of the dogs had behaviour problems that we didn’t feel we were qualified to fix. 3 weeks ago my daughter who works at RSPCA sent me a video and photo’s of a lovely pointer cross that was being fostered by her friend in Cyprus. He would have to go back to the pound if he didn’t find his forever home as they were moving back to England. He’s 2 years old, house trained and knows basic sit, stay, fetch, lied down and paw. He’s great with kids, cats and other dogs but has a condition called Leishmeniasis which is a lifelong parasitic disease caused by bite of sandflies. We fell in love with him! We’ve done our research and thing the pro’s out weigh the cons and for £350 he’s being flown to us in 2 weeks! So anyway the moral is, there are lots of dog’s looking for homes abroad, so you could maybe consider that?

    I just adopted a 3 year old min pin about 8 days ago. He came from an abusive, neglectful background. The first 3 days he was “aggressive” towards our other dog and cat. Now on day 8, he has started to calm down and he really is so sweet and attached to me already. He is a lot better with the other dog (still working on the cat!, but improving) I remember thinking because of his aggression in the beginning, I began to second guess myself. But after seeing your videos, I will continue to work with him everyday and I am sure we will be the best of friends 💕

    Here's the thing: I am underage (almost 16) and still live with my parents( they are separated, so two homes for me) and I wanted a dog since I was 12 I guess. But I really started investing my time and energy in it a year ago I would say. I talked to my father, who said, that he would support me and the dog in any way and would be really happy about a dog. My therapist said, that a dog would be really good for me, for multiple reasons. So I told my mother and asked her, if she would be okay with a dog and if she would support me and the dog. She said no without even considering it, I wasn't really surprised, cause she is rather toxic, but I was still disappointed. I wanted to live with my father completely a while now, but I never had the guts to tell my mother. But even if I lived with my father all the time, having a dog would be rather complicated, because my father works in another city and isn't home for three days a week. Do you think I could make it and would be a good parent to my dog, or do you think the dog wouldn't be happy with me? I have the resources to have a dog sitter if no one's home for too long, or if we have to travel (business) and we can't take the dog with us

    Wish you mentioned if a person first had other pets .i,e, (cats). Is it worth putting a rescue into a home with more than one other rescue...especially if different species! I have successfully had both together but once with a labrador (so easy going) & had other felines to offer playtime with The other time was when my feline seniors so the puppy I brought in, they left alone. The lab would allow the felines to sit on her! But "that" is the beautiful nature of a lab😊. Congrats on the adoption of Mochi !!! This was my first time viewing this channel. Love your passion.🐕

    Wow....I wish I’d seen this 2 weeks ago. We adopted a 3 year old dog today. Had visited with both my kids, but only once each I think. Brought him home today and he became aggressive with them. Not vicious, but played with them like he probably played with the other dogs at the shelter. I wasn’t there once and my kids were overwhelmed and terrified. 65 pound pit bull. Wasn’t his fault, but I misjudged the situation. They weren’t ready for a dog like this.

    • @pendlera2959
      @pendlera2959 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@margarettaft7362 Nonsense. There are many ways to manage that situation and that dog could most likely have been trained to be less rambunctious around the kids. They really didn't give it a fair chance - just because the dog was overwhelmed and riled up on its FIRST DAY doesn't mean that's its true nature or that it can't learn to be calmer. To jump straight to the assumption that the dog would have ended up killing the kids is just absurd.

    I just adopted a new addition today. I am calling him Roofus. He's a mixed breed and a pup still but he's a little spitfire and it's wonderful to see him adjusting to his new environment. I know in a few days or so I'll have to puppy proof the house a bit more as he gets into everything, but he has made a fine addition to the family and gets along very well with my other two dogs. I can't imagine having a dog and then giving up on it after only a week. It does indeed take time. I know for Ladybug, it took about a month or so for her to adjust. I will always adopt and not shop because I love the mixed breed dogs. To me, mixed breed dogs are the ones who are the healthiest types. I honestly didn't think I'd be adopting Roofus today because I thought he had already found a home. It turned out the owners couldn't have a dog at their apartment complex so had to bring him back to the shelter. The timing was perfect because my family and I saw him two weeks ago, but were not 100% convinced of having another dog yet. It was too soon after our other dog Roxie died. So we waited a long while and low and behold, he was there at the shelter today!! I'm the happiest I have ever been because he's brought a bit of joy back into my life.

    With the shelter dog we adopted about a month and a half ago, it was instant love for the whole family. Thankfully, they understood that potty training, etc takes time and effort, so I didn't get any flak when he would do unpleasant things. He's now doing fantastic - still some trouble with pooping in the house that I haven't quite figured out (he goes out every three hours or so now), and he puts anything and everything in his mouth at least once (leading me to purchase health insurance for him in case he swallowed something harmful), but he's learning fast and really learning to trust me and my fiancee. He's taking to training well, even starting some agility obstacles with good results. I'm really excited about the future with this dog.

You'll do great :) It helps that you know where he came from (many times with rescues we don't know the background, and therefore have no guidance in the start). Ask your coworker as many questions as you can about the dogs general behavior/tendancies, that will help with the nerves, and you'll know what to expect from your new dog

    Hey all! I know this is a long video, there's just SO MUCH to say about adopting a dog! For those of you who haven't already sent me photos and stories of your rescues, what I would like to know is...what is one tip that you'd give to someone who wants to adopt? Sidenote - do you like longer videos like this, or do you prefer short and sweet?

    • @jenerlee
      @jenerlee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My tips -
      * Don't think small space = small dog. Think lower energy dog. Energy level is more important than size. Get one that matches your lifestyle. (and be honest about it! If you're a couch potato, don't get a border collie)
      * Take at least a week off work to settle them in. Get them into a routine, and keep their world small to start with (don't invite the neighbourhood over on day 1, don't take them on different journeys every day etc).
      * Be patient.
      * Don't take the dog's behaviour personally.
      It's soooooo rewarding. As the shelter I support says, adopting won't change the world, but it will change the world for that dog. ❤🐕

      jen leighton totally! Especially the energy level thing! At the shelter, people will always go straight for the “pretty dogs” disregarding the fact that it’s not a good fit, and they end up bringing them back! Matching energy level is so important

      jenerlee great advice. I love the second tip about taking a week off. I love dogs. I’m 45 and NEVER had one but want one, or even 2 so bad. I’m just SO nervous. I took dogs out on doggie day out from my local animal shelter and fostered one for 2 weeks. I get anxiety because I live alone and work 3/4 days a week about 40 minutes away and worry about how the dog will be doing while I’m gone. Should I leave him/her inside or outside? Will they get along with my bf’s dog? Etc... I think 2 weeks off is perfect to settle them in and maybe train them. Ugh 😩 hesitating

    I’ve always adopted German Shepherds from only German Shepherd rescues.they all have fully tested for all situations,so they will know the dogs.they were all house and create trained.also have had basic training.its really a great way to get a dog.i live alone with no kids,wife or other animals.so I always ask for the ones who might need that special home.never been disappointed.
    If you are reading this and on the fence about adopting,this is my advice.go to a rescue and fill it the application.tell them your lifestyle and be honest.they will match you to the dog that suits you.don’t look at the pictures and have your heart set on one certain dog. Be open to what they say.you will have a best friend for life

    My last one passed 3 years ago , and I’ve always wanted to get another . Needless to say I love German Shepherds and I’m on the fence now to either adopt one from a shelter or pound or go to my breeder who I dealt with for years ?!!

    Really good video and good points
    With the responsibility having any Pet does not teach the kid responsibility, the adults teach them and having any Animal as a kids Pet can cause many problems for the Animal as the adults will not make sure they are cared for properly because its for the kid unless it's the adult who wants the Animal then teaches the kids

    I have adopted twice. Both times were a success. I had no expectations of the dogs except that we would develop our relationships naturally. Learning the rules of the house was never a problem because it was always approached with patience and love. If you give up on a dog after one week, you should probably get a goldfish until you have done more research on dogs. There is no better investment than then investment in a relationship with a dog.

    I've been thinking about adopting a dog for a while now. I even had my landlord add it to my lease before I signed it. I live alone and would like the companionship. I'm hoping to find a dog that's chill and doesn't disturb my neighbors. I figure we can go for walks and explore before and after work(: idk much about the adoption process so I've been watching vids. There's this place called SPCA not too far from where I live. I'm gonna go up there and see what all I need, super excited!!!!

    I have another question when usually would you have more dog walking clients And pet sitting clients in the week or in the weekend I finally planning to set up a business and I decided I still want to work but say nightshifts but I just don’t know what days would be the best to have more clients to work during the week ??🐶🐶🙈🙈🤔🤔🤗🤗🐶🐶

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Julia Xxx most people will hire dog walkers on weekdays during the day (because the majority of clients work 9-5 jobs). For dog sitting, that mostly takes place on weekends and holidays, because that’s when people go away

    Hello! I am adopting a rescue dog from another country; I live in Canada and the dog is from a kill shelter in Texas who is currently staying with a foster; he is said to be kid, dog, and cat friendly. I have experience with dogs, I owned a pitty for 10 years - the dog that I am adopting is a staffy mix. I do have two cats but I have all of the tools for a slow introduction. This is my first time adopting a dog, I am just wondering if there is anyone with first hand experience in this situation. I am slightly nervous but I think I have the experience to take it on. Any tips are welcome!

    I see you haven’t had an “active channel” in about a year, but just in case you still see the comments... I’ve been out of state for work for a while, but we own a home outside of Houston. I’m looking for us to adopt a new dog after we’ve had some time to get home and settled. Any advice you have on deciding if a dog is right for small kids, how to pick the right trainer, or even the best rescues or shelters to start looking would be welcome! ❤️

    I know I’m late, and thank you for the video. I’ve just been doing some research on adopting a cat shelter. I got my last cat from a coworker who adopted a pregnant cat and couldn’t keep all the kittens. My only comment would be about people’s housing situation. I completely disagree that if you can’t find an apartment that allows pets that you simply haven’t looked hard enough. There are some areas/states that are not pet friendly at all. And a lot of times they have weight and breed restrictions. I thought about getting a dog, but I like medium to large dogs and no apartment would accept them.

    Theres an english bulldog I want to adopt. He is 1 and a half years old. I really like him but I'm worried because of his age. Will he be easy to train? Will he listen? Will he easily be potty trained? These are the types of questions I am concerned with. Someone give me advice, I have a week to think about this!

    One thing regarding the second reason for surrender:
    Remember that just because it advertises no pets, you can still ask the question. Most landlords that I've come across are happy to accept a slightly larger deposit and a professional flea treatment at the end of tenancy.
    Bottom line: if you don't ask and try to persuade, you're probably not ready for a pet.

    And dude sometimes the only housing you can afford are the ones that do not allow dogs. Usually the cheaper ones do not allow them. Not everyone can afford the places that lets you have dogs and some places that allow dogs put breed and weight restrictions on what kind of dog you can have.

      I experienced this myself, but my wife and I were finally able to adopt a nice Shih-Tzu even though our yard isn’t fully fenced. I think leaving a dog in a yard by itself is never a good idea. There are wild animals that can get to it amongst other things.

      Thank you for your support! :) If you're filming animals, try to get a camera that films in 60 frames per second, because animals move fast and getting a camera that shoots in 60 will make sure it's not blurry. Also, a vlogging camera works much better than a big DSLR when you're shooting animals because the animal won't be as afraid of it. The most important thing, honestly, is to just practice editing. Editing makes a big difference in videos, and the more you do it the better you get. So just experiment with different ways of editing, watch TH-cam videos on cool editing tactics that you see in other videos and like. I hope that helps!

    More and more landlords are going no pets because of liability issues. And the fact that so many dog owners don’t train their dogs. If dog owners trained their dogs to behave towards fellow tenants landlords would be more accommodating towards dogs. If dg owners want to know why landlords forbid dogs. Look to your fellow dog owners who don’t train their dogs to behave

  • @margarettaft7362
    @margarettaft7362 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most important fact about rescue dogs. If a dog isn’t house trained by 9 or 10 months is will be very very difficult to house train it. If it’s more than 12 months old it will never be house trained. Not the dog’s or owners fault. Just a biological fact. Latest trend for dogs is a litter box. A plastic box in your house layered with pee pads.
