- You've been to the animal shelter, fell in love with THE PERFECT dog and now you're ready to bring him/her home (yay!). This video is all about how to prepare to bring your rescue dog home and what you can expect on the very first night when you adopt a dog. I also go through my experience with my own rescue dog (SPOILER ALERT: it was awful in the beginning), to help to calm your nerves.

One thing that I found pretty interesting was a comment by a German dog trainer who said “don’t expect your dog to be thankful you saved him“. The dog doesn’t know he/she got „saved“, all it knows is that it’s faced with a completely new environment that will take weeks or even months to get used to.

The rule of 3s with new dogs. 3 days to settle in to their new surroundings, 3 weeks to learn the routine and 3 months to fully open up. ❤️
And probably 3 years to train them if you work at it.

Sometimes it can take even more time. Every dog is different and settles in differently.
Alisha Wallo my rescue dog has been trained while being with foster owner so she won’t be as hard but I’m exited to meet her!
Just adopted an 11yr old bull terrier x English bulldog, she's such a sweetheart, my first dog, and I'm gonna make it my mission to keep rescuing old dogs and giving them a good last few years, I live 5 minutes from a dog beach, she's got the best life now.

I really wouldn't recommend taking a week off for the dog to accommodate, if he/she gets used to you being there the whole time, then when you gotta go to work BOOM Anxiety! 2-3 days it's what I would recommend.
A week off is pretty unrealistic for most people. Especially because shelters don't really hold dogs and you need to ask off from work at least two weeks in advance
@@medallo143 yeap it is, either way I personally don't think it's to have a totally different routine when you get the dog and then change it just when he starts to get accommodated
Exactly! I can’t imagine taking a week off of work… I was told to not suffocate the dog with your presence
Most of the dogs I've fostered/adopted had NO idea about stairs. (And I used to live in a third floor apartment without a lift, so there was a lot of carrying!) It would take a few days with some, moving one paw at a time, giving treats and encouragement and being *patient*. Having an example dog helps a lot for some new dogs. If they are happy to follow an experienced dog, it can work magic.
Me too!!! I have one now and she has NO idea about stairs. Edit: I have not been keeping up! My dog learned to walk up them late at night following my dad but my mom had to carry her back downstairs. But now she knows how to properly walk up and down the stairs
That's what I do with all my dog's that are able to be around other Dog's. Bring out an older dog that's already 100% trained and just let the younger dog watch, copy and learn from the older one! Works like magic!! Once a young dog sees the older one complete a command and get a treat for it , they usually start trying to show off right away lol
I'm a human and I couldn't imagine moving into a new place and getting a whole new family all at the same time. I wouldn't want them to throw me a big welcoming party, I would just want to know where I'll be sleeping and be sure the food situation is taken care of. Then I can slowly meet new family members and get to know people. No, we won't be friends right away. Yes, I may want to stay in my room and be by myself a little more at the start. But if my new home is safe and quiet and my new family is kind and consistent, then it will be much easier for me to become comfortable.

Love the video. Many rescue dogs are eager to please and learn your rules. "Calm home" means no shouting commands: there is no need to shout. Dogs have good hearing. You may be surprised how well you can communicate with a dog without speaking. If your new pup looks at you, this is very positive: he is looking at you for approval. There are a dozen things that you must do, but I will give you one that requires no work, that is, "chill."
Yeah that’s my problem. I tend to get to aggravated too quickly. So I’ve calmed the heck down and chill out.
Wow, this made me cry! My fiancé and I just adopted our first rescue dog yesterday and were already feeling overwhelmed but this really helped calm a lot of our anxieties. We are so excited to be able to show our dog, Porter, what a loving, dedicated household truly is. Thank you for all of your content because it's a huge help.

My first rescue Coco came from Taiwan as a street stray. But the rescue who brought her over here did an amazing job of both leash and crate training her before she found me and decided to come home with me. So her crate was her safe space. All her 12 more years with me she would just sometimes go lay in her crate to rest. Was such a sweetheart though, still miss her.
24 hours from now we get our first adult rescue…we’ve had 4 but they were all puppies. Bear, our rescue we’re bringing home tomorrow is 3 1/2.
He’s a heeler/border collie mix. I’m home full time and my husband is taking 2 days off work so we have 4 days together when we get him here since he’s taking off work on Thursday and Friday. Bear has been so stressed the shelter was talking about *cringe* “comfort measures.”
He will never be crated..ever. We don’t own one and won’t be buying one. You can’t close up a heeler and expect a heeler to be happy. We’ve already raised a heeler who was the love of our lives and the hardest dog I’ve ever lost…he was 14 when he passed earlier this year and we were devastated. I’ve lost humans that hurt less to lose if I’m just being honest.
We’ve done all the shopping, have stored all of the toys, blankets and bowls of our heeler that passed and bought Bear his own belongings.
We know the energy of heelers. We’re hikers, kayakers, and just generally outdoor people from the mountains or East Tennessee. We’re so well aware of what to expect with his energy level…Blue, our heeler taught us that. Our 3 sons are grown and out of the house but they’re all 3 looking forward to hiking and camping with Bear but we’ve already told them we’re looking at mid summer for that since they’ll have to visit a lot to get the trust they need from him to do so.
I feel prepared and I’ve geeked out on all your videos especially since you also had a cattle dog.
All I’m asking is for a little prayer or good vibes for Bear and for us with Bear. He’s been at the shelter for a long time because he won’t let people get near him so they just pass him up. With us though, that didn’t happen. He sat on my feet and leaned on me immediately just like Blue did when he was protecting me. And he even licked my husband’s neck from behind when my husband sat in the floor with him. I fully believe it was a sign since after hundreds of people got zero out of him when visiting the shelter.
So here we go… 24 hours away from a new beginning for Bear.
We’ll not give up…we don’t have it in us. This is house is his house for the rest of his life.
Great advice. After many years of wanting a dog I adopted one in February. She was perfect yet I was anxious and afraid that I was failing her. I felt overwhelmed. There’s some things you don’t anticipate, dog hair, mud on carpets, the expense of having to buy toys ALL the time because she chews them up. Activity level required. I love our morning cuddles. She’s so happy to be by my side to start the day. It’s a lot but it’s worth it it because she’s the best girl ever. Women’s best friend!
bsmartcoaching , you said it so well! Glad you were able to adopt a pup. I was a foster for the first time had so much to learn... all the things you said. This is the first video I saw that mentioned the bedtime cuddles....so true! Hope it’s going well for you and your new best fur- friend.
If the activity level is too much for you, there are doggie treadmills! I have 2 GSD's so my dogpacer has been a lifesaver in bad weather or when I've been sick. Frisbee is another good exercise for them. As for toys, latex toys is what I got them, last longer than the fuzzy stuff.
And yes, cuddles are the best!!
2 years later what would you say?! I love my animals. I think they are great for people.
If you buy the black kong toys (black Kong ball and black Kong toys you can put treats in) they will last about 6 months to a year even for the most aggressive chewer.

It was my dogs first night last night & she was so happy & loves being here, I put her bed next to mine & after a few times of trying to get in my bed she learned that she had to sleep in her bed & she was happy doing so I did hang my arm out the bed all night next to her so she could feel close to me & she didn't move she SLEPT all night & she didn't not Evan move she didn't walk around the room she just snored her head off ha, I think the long walk b4 bed helped. I think I was lucky with her she has settled in straight away. We all love her so much!
Going to adopt a senior dog soon and this is going to super helpful
How did it go, did he/she settle in already?:) Senior dogs are awesome, in memory of my first oldie, I will always have at least one rescue senior in my pack (cause 1 dog just ain't enough to fill the bed!) - my newest rescue, a 13 year old lab looked like he felt at home right away, but he truly settled after 3 weeks.
@@margodphd in the end the dog's foster parent fell in love with and adopted them. Didn't get to adopt them, but maybe in the future I'll adopt a dog again. Definitely a senior one

When I got a shelter pet, I was told by a dog trainer to keep her tethered to me when she wasn’t in her crate for a while until she got used to the routine so that she wouldn’t end up going to the bathroom anywhere she wasn’t supposed to. This also allowed for her to begin to get used to the idea that she wasn’t going anywhere, and that she was now home.
I'm adopting a 2 month old puppy tomorrow with my boyfriend. Him and his siblings were found in a ditch completely bald due to insects biting at them. The shelter and that ditch is all he's known, so I know it's going to be very hard at first, it made me so emotional hearing about his story. I'm a stay at home girlfriend so it will be good that I'll always be with him while my boyfriends at work.
Wow, what a sad story! It is so lovely that the puppies were found and can now go into great homes. You will definitely encounter some difficulties, as everyone does with a 2 month old puppy! But, he is young and adaptable, so you can give him a fresh start

We'll be getting our second rescue in about two weeks time. A beautiful pure black 9 month old shepherd mix with yellowish 'wolf eyes'. This will be our first who will have had a bit of a troubled past. Even though my job entails rehabilitating veteran military (Dutch) dogs into civilian life, so I'm quite used to dogs who have no clue how to behave and are even aggressive, I still feel nervously excited about adopting a dog and this video is an absolutely great refresher! This is around the 8th video I've watched on this subject, you are the only one who doesn't come at it from a dog trainers perspective but a much more rational point of view. Simply being with the dog, showing it affection is not something I've heard in the other videos. I think this is one step people thoroughly overlook.
I never used to be a reader, until I started doing my current job. The dogs who don't trust anyone but their former handler, we just sit with them at a for them comfortable distance and read things out loud. The first time I was absolutely amazed that it worked, he looked me straight in the eyes and his ears perked up. The first time he looked to make contact with anyone. So that's my little tip when you're chilling with your newly adopted dog, just read something to them for a bit if they are distance towards you.

Thank you for all of your wonderful and approachable advice! I’m 2 days in with my newly adopted rescue. A 6yr old lab mix. She is VERY welcome to pets and affection, walks slow on a leash, and struggles a bit on the stairs. Approaching her with lots of patience, praise & cuddles.

Thank you for sharing. I am picking up my first dog in 20 yrs and we decided to adopt or rescue instead of buying. There are so many pets that humans had to surrender or just have been abandoned and neglected. So I will be a good human and get a dog a new loving home. I’m going to pick up my first foster tomorrow and I can’t wait. I’ve been wanting to do this for so long. I’m the first person who cared about meeting him. He’s an 18 year old Chihuahua with some Arthritis. His owner died so he was surrendered. If all goes well and we connect on a deeper level I’m definitely considering adopting him in the future I can’t wait to share my journey too!
When we adopdet our dog,she was imadetly on top. We could not belive, the situation. She lived 15 years in our home. She past by cancer. Every day we are missing her. I think she trustet us every day. We will never forget her.
Here is my foster story:
We fostered Dixie through a rescue that pulls GSP's (German short-haired Pointers) from rescues. All they knew about her was that she was a 1-year-old GSP mix who was given to the shelter because her owners could not care for her any longer. They pulled her because she was not doing well in a shelter environment. (The rescue we fostered her though was a foster reliable rescue, not an actual building) She was not eating and was only 30 lbs instead of the 45 pound GSP mix (beagle or hound maybe?) and had diarrhea. When we get her, she has a lump on her neck. So that was issue #1. We get home and we have purposely gotten her on a Friday of the beginning of a 3 day weekend to get to know her so here comes Issue #2 Come Tuesday We put her in her crate to go to work/school and we had a nanny cam on her a Reilly (my current GSP) and she whined and hollered the whole day so that was Issue #2: Separation anxiety So this goes on and on until she breaks out of her crate and destroys a curtain. If think that was bad wait for Issue #3 Dixie decided that she likes to run in the woods behind our house. One day she had the 20-foot leash we put on her so she could run but not escape and she gets loose one morning right before school so we are calling and calling and can't find her so we had to give up until we hear a bark that is no doubt, Dixie so through tears me and my mom go towards the bark and find her wrapped around a tree. Back to her neck lump. Thank god it was not a tumor but it was a salivary gland that was broke and was creating this now huge lump. The fist vet says it is fine and no need for surgery we get a second opinion she has surgery blah blah blah, by the way, the amazing rescue paid for it all (but I think we paid some too) Anyway, 5 days after her surgery, the stitches break and one emergency vet later, she is fine anyway all in all I REALLY WANT TO FOSTER AGAIN AND SINCE THAT WAS OUR ONLY EXPERIENCE I DONT THINK MY PARENTS WILL LET THAT HAPPEN. You are delightful! I am picking up my TWO rescue dogs, Saturday. I have had many rescue dogs and stray cats - lost my last of three senior dogs a few months ago. I am knowledgeable and have a great connection with all of my animals, including chickens and donkeys , but want my final (probably) adopted babies to get the best start, and I have now memorized your tips. It’s my second night with my little 6 lbs of love little girl. She was so matted and stinky. I cleaned her up. She took it very well. She’s so loving and has her pink Jammie’s on and is so cute. I love her so much. I don’t want to put down. I probably carry her around too much.
I found this very informative. I introduced my 1st foster to my pack almost 2 weeks ago (actually 2nd foster, in 2013 I officially became a foster-fail). I shared the link to a local rescue I volunteer with, hopefully it will inform people what to expect when they adopt or foster. I hope this prevents 'returns' after a day or 2 because a pup is scared or stressed.
My beautiful English Springer Spaniel Piper was 3 when we rescued her from a Kennel that had 500 dogs stacked on top of each other...with 2 helpers. She was so neglected. She slept under the daybed in my office for 2 weeks. The daybed is her safe place and she joined me in bed after 2 weeks.
She is so needy and I love and adore her. It's been a year and still taking baby steps with her. Trying not to coddle, but she has been through so much in her 3 years before we got her.
This video is great! We’re expecting Rhea (our Greek rescue) at the end of March. I’ve had dogs all my life but never a rescue so really trying to do my research. So happy I found this ❤️

I live in a condo complex & found a stray female petite pit bull mix. I brought her home & kept her until after the storm passed over. I took her to Citizens for Animal Protection (Houston, TX) & they found she was microchipped. The owner didn't want to come claim her so they took her into their shelter, gave her an exam & found she had heartworms. I volunteered to temporarily foster her during the treatment which will take about 3, maybe 4 months. After only a month now, I'm already getting attached. I already have two dog & my HOA only allows that many. I'm beginning to already feel that I'm going to be really heart broken when I have to give her back up to the shelter. I don't know how long she will be in the shelter until her forever home finds her. I hate the thought of her going from my loving happy home back to the shelter having to wait there for a home. How do I deal with this pain? Should I take her back now or keep her until the heartworm treatment is over?

I hope you found a way to keep her but regardless you’re awesome for helping her out 🙂

I had to relinquish my beloved 6.7 y/o terrier mix bc he bit my face (1st x ever), and I couldn’t take a chance with my 2 y/o son. It’s so nice to see videos like this. I hope my little guy gets adopted by someone as knowledgeable, patient, and kind like u.

Just welcomed a bonded pair of rescued cattle dog mixes (mom and son) after losing my forever dog earlier this year. Thank you for this video! It really helped to hear the story of someone else who has gone through a similar experience. Also liked hearing some of your suggestions re what to do and what not to do.
I adopted my first dog 4 days ago and even though she has been wonderful it has still been one of the most stressful times I have gone though.
She got out on the first night by jumping the fence and ended up back at the same shelter.
I was so disappointed in myself and after picking her up I couldn’t help but think I’ve bitten off more then I can chew.
It’s been hard on both of us getting into our routine and opening up, I just have to keep reminding myself that’s it’s still very early days.

Update after a month?
Yeah I too just adopted a new dog about 3 days ago at my local shelter. She’s been a little tornado and is like a Bull in a China shop! But I’ve learned something: she picks up on my energy…if I’m anxious, she is anxious. If I am calm, like I am calm now, she is too.
Plus I’ll start taking her for walks more-that’ll help tremendously with the craziness!
I just adopted my dog Pooh Bear, but I'm naming him Juno. He's such a good boy, I just wanna make him as comftorable as I possibly can. I have three days off and since I work night shift there will always be someone home with him to make sure he's ok.
This is so helpful! We lost our dog to cancer last month. The house is so empty and our hearts are broken. We are getting an Australian Shepherd, but that's a year and a half away. We love the idea of having two dogs, so we are looking into rescuing a dog. The rescue would be mine, and the aussie would be my mother's. Koda was a mutt, his mother decided to have fun one night. But he came from a good home. My boyfriend is from an area with lots of stray dogs, so his mom has a pile of people looking for me. Since in my area we don't have many rescue dogs available. We have a couple possibilities in place, and my boyfriend's uncle is on a mini rescue mission to find a dog who needs a home. His family would help bring the dog home to me, and it would be a completely different experience. I'm not working all summer as I'm doing the summer semester (online). Meaning I'll be home with the dog until September if campus reopens (I go to university in my hometown). My mother is also off work at the moment, and will be working from home for awhile. And my stepdad is a seasonal worker, so when I go back, he comes home. My boyfriend is leaving for the military next week until the end of August, so I will have loads of extra time on my hands. This is the perfect time for us to bring a baby into our home. This video is so helpful as we will have no idea where our new puppy has been, or went through. My only first hand experience with a rescue was my old childhood cat.
My rescue girl from Hungary is coming in two weeks super scared of humans right now, just hunching down all the time, but there’s a tail wiggle going on. I’m excited about her and what’s to come 💕💕💕

@@chloeoniell5819 it’s going good, she’s super funny and open in the house now, plays a lot, snuggles and everything, outside she’s only trusting me and still scared of cars, bicycles and other humans or dogs ... but we are getting there 💕

I'm not a dog but I want to be rescued by her. Enchanting.
Adopted a stray last Wednesday and after sapy surgery got to bring her to my living place; an apt. I've been working on house training; So far it has been five days and there are still accidents (as I clean them up right away) but I keep taking her outside to show her that 'bathroom' is outside on grass etc. Not in the apt. I currently have another adopted dog from antoher animal shelter; got her when she was 6 months old and I had to train her so very little. She learned that outside is the bathroom quickly. Today NaOmi is 8 years of age and my new one, Sophia is about 1 year of age who is a standard Dachshund and NaOmi a Chug.
I was going to write my comments but it’s all been said/ your content is a blessing….I’m on hr 6 and she came from a hoarding situation and abuse….. and she is Australian terrier mix, this was the first video I clicked on since she came home……❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

My dog definitely jumped right in bed the first night lol He was actually pretty aloof for a long time after we got him, but that's something he did right away. I guess it was still comforting to have others around while he slept
i took my 4 day rescue to the buffalo river and he hanged out with a hybrid wolf and her son, he was exemplary. Came when I called while hanging out with farm dogs. My dog is regal. He passed away on 23rd, Dec 2020. Best mate ever.
1. Keep the atmosphere calm
2. Don’t assume the dog is house trained
3. Limit access to the majority of the house
4. Toilet every hour
5. Dog may be shy and afraid- they need to develop a bond with you
6. Crate training may take time
7. Baby gates can be useful
8. Work on trust - morning and night times take 10 mins at each time to stroke, praise, treats
9. Set up a routine
10. Be patient, work at the dog’s pace
11. Give the dog plenty of time to settle in and please don’t rush to return a fearful dog to the shelter

I’m so glad I found this video! We have a beautiful 8 month old rescue dog coming to the UK from Romania last week and have been so worried about the first few days and weeks as we want her to be happy. I’ve taken 2 weeks off work to help her to settle so all is good there but the curve ball is we have 3 cats........fingers crossed but thank you for this video x

Hi Jen.....it’s certainly been a process lol but we are getting there and building trust day by day. I think the key was to go at the dogs speed no matter how much you want to shower them with love. I would definitely research as much as possible and focus on positive reinforcement of good behaviours and try not to react too much to the undesirable ones. I wouldn’t change our lovely rescue for the world bless her but it has been hard work, so as long as you are prepared, but willing to adapt you will be fine. Some of the dogs come over with a fear of random things such as steps, windows, TVs etc as they haven’t seen them. Also a pot of dogs tend to fear men. We found our girl was fine with me but a little wary of my hubby. We made sure hubby did all of the feeding, treats and fun things and she soon associated him with positive experiences. The group we used was Buddies Freedom Rescue on Facebook and they have been amazing. I even walk regularly with one of the group admins as we needed a bit of help with anxiety around other dogs. Newly adopted dog is ruining my life!
I recently lost my beloved Dog Sparky, who was part of my life for almost 17y. His passing broke my heart, he was my best friend, always on my side.
My house felt lonely and I miss the company having a dog on my side to care for.
So, I decided to adopt a 6y old dog, who recently lost his “owner” I though we can help each other.
I prepared my home for the newcomer (a beagle/hound mix) bought new bowls, beds, treats and toys (I kept all those stuff from my previous dog, but didn’t want to use those)
The first thing I noticed with this new dog he is obsesses with food, food and nothing but food.
He emptied already my bin all over the house in her first night.
Taking her for a walk is a nightmare! she pulls like crazy, don’t listen at all, left, right, behind, turning etc. my arms are really sore from constantly holding her and pulling her back.
I got her now for 10 days and I have to say honestly, I REGRED getting her into my life.
She wakes me up every day at 5 or 6am demanding food and her walk! She has no interest at all in any toys not even a ball.
She hauls at night like a wolf, keeping me awake. Those past 10 days have been hell for me, the company and fun I hoped for having a new dog turned into a nightmare.
I don’t know what to do, give her back to the shelter??
Give it a little more time. I had a dog who had the ABSOLUTE WORST separation anxiety so after a year of trying EVERYTHING, I decided to get her a friend. I made the mistake of not considering how their personalities/temperaments would work together. She was super tiny/delicate and very mellow while he was a big boy that was super hyper and he would constantly crash into her and bite her ears and she HATED him. While they did grow to love each other over time (well…she tolerated him but he was obsessed with her), it was an absolute nightmare and I really regretted it and didn’t know what to do for a good amount of time!
If possible, give it a little more time and try to do things that will help you two bond. It’s crazy how love starts to develop over time with special moments and the memories made. I’ve been shocked at what I’ve loved in time that I didn’t even like before….
This helped with my new rescue. Now 6 weeks in and going great
Thank you for the great advice, we're bringing home a rescue dog at the end of the month. We have had dogs all our life but always from pups, this one is 2-3 yrs old and all we know is he was saved from a kill shelter and has been with a foster for the past 5 months.

I'm getting my first dog tomorrow!(I've had dogs growing up but its my first dog at my own place as an adult) hes a shelter dog, 6yo boxer/lab. I got a collar, harness, leash, seat belt, toys and much more, I meet him tomorrow 😍 I'm so excited.

some shelters only allow a 2-week adjustment for both the dog and the adopting family if they want a refund for the adoption fee, although it sounds horrible for a family to return the dog after a short period some circumstances call for it.
I know this is an older comment but I can attest to this as true and useful. A year ago my wife and I brought home a rescue dog that I can only assume was used as a bait dog. She was scared of everything and took about 3 days before she would even allow me to be in the room with her. She was instantly attached to my wife and our daughter who at the time was almost 5 years old. However on the seventh day in my daughter was getting ready for bedtime and she had her favorite stuffed animal that she would always put to bed by covering it up with a baby blanket. The dog had never seen this nightly ritual as we always kept her out of my daughters room due to the toys being in there and us not wanting the dog to chew on any of them however on this night she was in the room because my daughter wanted to say good night to her. When my daughter fluffed up the small blanket, like you would if you were trying to put a sheet on the bed, the dog charged and ripped the blanket out of my daughters hands and immediately began to tear it to shreds. My daughter luckily was not bit, however she was terrified of the dog from then on. I called and asked why the dog would do this the next day and their only assumption is that the dog may have been kept in a kennel or small cage and they covered it with a blanket and the dog thought of it as though we were putting her in one since it was a new room of the house and the dog felt like it was about to lose all its newfound freedom.
Another incident happened two days later with the dog this time biting my wife. We had many times put the dog in a harness and then on a leash with no issues. But on this morning my wife went to put the leash on the dogs collar and the dog bit my wife on the hand and did draw blood, the dog was so scared of the leash on the collar thinking it was going to be chained up, it again fought for its freedom. We couldn't blame the dog for its behavior and truly did care for the dog because other than these two incidents it was a very sweet and gentle mannered dog, but we also could not keep the dog at that time. The shelter offered to take the dog back however we were able to foster the dog instead while the shelter found a more suitable owner. The dog is now happy with a new owner and we have rescued two other dogs just not ones from a background of physical abuse.

I had "Ollie" for a couple of weeks but had to return him because he had bad heartworm and the shelter wanted him back for treatment. In those two weeks he was very shy and did not follow me or come to me except for dinner which he devoured, probably because he had to complete in the situation. He also was not potty trained but seemed to know about doing his business on pee pads. Another unusual thing was that he would sometimes howl which I think was looking for the other dogs he was with being horded with. Still he had great potential and I think began to trust me before I had to return him. I would advise a good health workup when you adopt. I miss Ollie and would have liked to have kept him but I was not able to deal with his heartworm. He eventually was healed and was adopted out. Good luck. I just adopted yesterday. My poor pup has been in the same corner all day. Refuses to drink water from bowl and barely touched any food. You mentioned setting up a routine but it seems impossible when he refuses to move/ walk. He won’t take any treats. I’ve sat next to him for an hour here and there and pert him & give him praise. I know it’s only day 2 but it’s been tough.
Try sitting near them. Not interacting, just being near. Speak in soft tones, using their name. But this video hits a lot of good points.
Tatyana Gordon yes I did that too. I took my laptop and sat next to him while I worked. It’s been 1 week. We forced bathed him because he smelled so bad. Once we got that done we were able to move him into his bed where he has been ever since. We put doggie pads around in case he decides to do his business. I also put toys and a blanket on his bed. By the 2nd day he was cuddled up on the blanket. He finally ate a treat we left on his bed. And there was evidence he drank water!! Today I woke up and he finally pooped! What a relief. I gave him a treat for a job well done. He lets me pet him without a growl. Next step is motivating him to go out for a walk or just outside.

G Glydie hi! Yes 1 month w/ Max! There has been some progress... Max eats/drinks water/does his business regularly every night when we go to bed. For the first time two days ago he got out of his bed to drink water in front of us!! He slowly inches his way but he did it. He lets me pet him and when I offer him food like boiled chicken he will take it if I dangle it. I tried putting on the leash and pulling a bit to get him moving but he refused. Made himself hard like a statue and growled at me. I left the leash in for about a week to get him comfortable with the weight and feel but he started chewing it up so I took it off. Slowly but surely I’m sure he will continue to get more comfortable. He seems to enjoy laying on his bed... sometimes he lets his legs hang off it lol.

Take the dog for a go walk on the lead before coming in the first time, when in introduce to a safe crate/bed

We adopted a beautiful 5 month old puppy from the pound. It took about one month for the dog to become normal. Housebreaking was the biggest challenge. The poor dog had definite abandonment anxiety. I’m happy to say with a bit of extra work and patience, we now have a perfect pet!

I would seriously recommend getting two dogs as they are pack animals and there will be times when you need to leave your dog on its own. It’s so much kinder to get a companion for your dog. How would you feel if you were on your own every day? The dog can’t t ell the time or know when or if you will ever return. I would recommend taking at least one week off work to allow your dog to adjust and help will kind training. Many rescue dogs are not house trained. It usually takes me 4 days to a month to get a dog clean in the day time. This is why you need a couple of weeks so you can take them outside every 30 mins - just to sniff the grass and teach them to go to the toilet outside. I haven’t watched the video yet so hope I’m not repeating the obvious 🤣🤣 Good Luck. Remember invest in some quality time with your dog and your have a loyal companion. Never be angry or lose your temper, you will ruin your relationship with your dog. Remember, dogs don’t understand our language but their keen to try!

The first night is always the most nerve-wracking, for everyone. You'll do great! If it's especially difficult just remember that it gets better :) It took my dog a long time to settle in, but it was so worth the wait!

My little chihuahua who is rescued stayed under the bed for 6 months she was so scared and 1 day she came out and all was wonderful so it takes time for them to trust people need to understand that
So true give them time. My local dog shelter where I volunteer had a dog returned after just 2 days , reason was that she was too shy. And no matter how much we tried to explain to them that it takes time . Nope. they didn't want her. Sad.

I have 3 cats myself and 2 of my roommates, so bringing a dog into the house is difficult and I also have major anxiety. A friend of ours was looking for a good home for their dog who is 1years old and I thought the dog would be a good fit. She is super shy and nervous right now as it’s her first day with us and in our home! I hope things get better!
I had to carry a near 50 pound 4 month old pit bull nala that i rescued from craiglist up and down stairs then i used food to lure her

Currently looking to adopt a dog from Husky Rescue Ireland!! I just moved into a new house and theres this huge coal bunker in the garden, the dog would be able to jump on it and get over the wall, especially a husky! It's me and my mum's job to empty out all the coal (we dont need it so we're giving it away for free to people that do) and oh jeez it is a tedious job, but it will all be worth it when I get my rescue husky:D!!!
