  • Legendary Comedian Milton Berle was given an opportunity to host the hottest new show on Television - Saturday Night Live. Can they hold hands in comedic harmony or will egos turn the episode into an infamous hellscape?

    Used to drive a limo service back in the 90’s. Picked up Mr. Berle to drive him to LAX. He was very frail and on his own. I did not feel good about dropping him off on his own. Long story short he had no one at this point in time looking out for him. Nice man, spent an hour with him and he was very kind.

    When Milton Berle was Mr. television in the early days, he controlled every aspect of his program. He was a control freak and a micromanager to the extreme. That’s what he tried to do on Saturday Night Live. And it didn’t work.

    Milton Berle was about 40 years old when he started on tv.
    Don't hate me but I did laughed at Berle's comedy. That is just me. But Berle did give complements to the original SNL cast

    This was a classic instance of the "old school' guy vs. the "hip new guys". Berle was tough to deal with at times but he also knew his stuff. I read that when Desi Arnaz hosted the show, those him new guys started telling him about camera angles, stage directions, etc. and he blew up at them. Not unreasonably either. He said "I invented these things you know!" So both Arnaz and Berle felt they should be given a certain amount of respect and deferment. Other than Belushi, Berle was not given that respect.

    I grew up during the late seventies. Even then Milton Berle was considered a relic of the past though he was a very famous person. Almost everybody knew his name but he didn't appear on a lot of shows. He did show up on the regular kind of game show circuit and Johnny Carson kind of interview shows. To be honest he was most known for the piano story.

    The fact that Milton Berle came on a "meticulously choreographed" late night show and did things his way, pushing the hard-@ss boundaries Lorne Michaels had constructed, makes _BERLE_ the edgy performer in this situation. _He's_ the one breaking the rules. People like Michaels talk a big anarchy game, but one actor goes rogue for one minute, he goes full on ape-sh💩t. remember into the Elvis Costello appearance in 1977? He started playing one song and abruptly changed to another. Lorne Michaels stormed backstage after the show, bawled him out see like a high school principal, then banned Elvis "for life". Don't look now, Lorne, but YOU are old school. I'm just glad somebody had their head screwed on right, John Belushi.

    Ooooh, banned for life by Lorne Michaels. A guy who produces a show that hasn’t been funny in 25 years!!
    The Berle Show dominated Tuesday nights, PRIME TIME, not late night, sometimes reaching a 97% share of the viewing audience. Theaters, restaurants, and other businesses closed for the hour his show was on. Television sales more than doubled because of his show.
    When sponsor Texaco balked at Berle booking Black performers, Berle threatened to walk (his show was live). Berle won the showdown. He was dubbed ‘Mr. Television.’
    So being banned by a lightweight like Lorne Michaels would be an honor!
    And I write this as a non-Berle fan who never thought he was funny!!

    • @rustybear5125
      @rustybear5125 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Your comment makes no sense. It's not how great he was, it's about you were invited to host a show that isn't yours, and you think you have the right to take it over. Making suggestion is fine, but disregarding the show runners and cast is unforgivable. Except for Belushi, you can see how pissed off the cast was. Come in, do your job, end of story. Next time you go to work, do whatever you please and ignore the people in charge and see what happens. Watching you get fired would be as you say, an honor!

    • @valmarsiglia
      @valmarsiglia หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, but by that point he actually had to hire people to sit in the audience and cheer him, that's of course a bad sign. I think he probably felt the inevitable sense of humiliation that goes with no longer being in charge and of being supplanted by people who seem like kids to you. And say what you will about SNL, it's still on the air 50 years later and continues to launch the careers of many of the US's and Canada's best comedians. I generally cringe more than I laugh when I watch SNL these days, but it still brings in the ratings, and given the show's longevity, one could argue that Michaels has left a much larger cultural footprint than Berle ever could have dreamed of.

    Personally, I never really appreciated Milton Berle in cinema or on television… On the other hand, when I saw him live, but the opening of the Fredericks of Hollywood Bra Museum, I found him to be one of the quickest, which I’ve ever seen, and proceeded to cast and direct him in a short-lived TV series for showtime… at one point when Milton was talking to George Burns, who was the MC, Burns was being helped of the stage by two playboy, playmates, and he made some blue remark about making sure the girls got tucked in correctly - - bro, turned and sit on the spur of the moment, “Right George- at your age that’s like shooting pool with a rope!“

    Excuse me. Don Rickles and Groucho never changed. They had Rickles hosting in '85 and he demolished the audience. He was goddamn hysterical and the cast were laughing on the side, as he dismantled the sketches where he made fun of Joe Piscopo and the rest of the cast.

    Everyone seems to miss the fact that the sketch with the big fat ass was written to make Milton look like a big fat ass. The old person's home sketch had him talking about "making" and gave Jane (if I remember right) the opportunity to stuff presumably vile baby food into his mouth while he had to sit there, on live television and take it. I'm pretty sure that, after working with him for a few days and having him treat them like his galley slaves, they got him back with these sketches.

      @@WeirdShowbizHistory You could always tell how much the cast of SNL likes or dislikes a host by how they embrace the person in the closing. They stood back from Milton, while they likely hugged and chatted with Buck Henry. The Desi Arnaz closing was classic (and the sketches were amazing, too). Clearly, they had a good time with him. I think Belushi's embrace of Milton was his way of being sympathetic, respectful, defiant, sarcastic or any or all of the above.

    So true about Berle . He always had to jump into another performers spot . Many times it was damn annoying . Many years ago , our town had one of those in the round summer theaters. All the big stars performed there . My dad was a firefighter , and there were always a couple firefighters on a detail for fire watch , along with police officers for security and traffic . Berle did a performance once and my dad had the detail. He said he was the most arrogant miserable “person”. I want this post to stay up, so I won’t use his words 😂😂😂.
