I'd really suggest claying the paint before cutting if you do something like this again. It'll take the dirt out of the paint and this will enable the polisher to do a much better and easier job.
I hate typing this, because everyone has an opinion on detailing and all of them are different. That said, I'd use a paint cleaner, THEN clay, so as not to go through 3 claybars. I might even take the time to use a glaze after the polish, just to condition the paint a bit more before waxing. That said, the finished product still looks 100% better. Very satisfying video.
@@gamby16a Good idea, makes sense to use the iron and tar remover first, especially if the lacquer layer is still thick enough. I'd also suggest trying a clay mitt or towel instead of a bar, along with a lot of soapy water. Way faster than a clay bar.
It's really great that the aggressive cleaners and the remains of the operating fluids from the engine compartment get into the environment. Here in Germany you would pay a fine of thousands of euros for it.
11 years ago, I drug home a "78 320 i and stuck it in my shop. It was not running and last tagged in "05. You're video has given me inspiration to get that baby on the road. Can't wait! Thanks Mike
those are a US thing for sure. we do not have them horrendous things over here in europe. make me shudder just to look at. most european cars had them in america but not over here. the caddy had similar big ugly bumpers to if i remeber correctly. i've seen us imports of VW bugs with them to first thing us brits do is rip the monstrosities off
Yes that was the law from I think 1974 on. Cars had to absorb I think 5 mph in the front with no damage and 2 and 1/2 mph in the rear. When the law first came out it ruined the appearances of cars like the Camaro. In time they made it where bumpers could be incorporated into the body of the car which is what we have now. Around this same time pollution controls were required which cut back on the efficiency and performance of motors. We went from having great looking fast cars in the late 1960s to ugly inefficient crap in the 70s. And then along came Toyota.
Hey Michael - that trick with the Dawn in the hose nozzle works pretty well! I’d suggest splurging on a quick-disconnect so that it is easier to replenish the soap solution on the fly.
I owned one of the these. Wonderful cars that sadly get overlooked by BMW enthusiasts. Just an FYI, there's two ways to do the bumper tuck. The easy way is to drill holes into and compress the bumper shocks then trim the rubber side bellows. But the preferred way is to replace with the Euro bumpers, which have be special ordered. Maximiian Imports sells these but as these cars have been out of production for four decades, these aren't cheap or easy to find. You might also try fitting late e30 bumpers. They fit but aren't correct for the car. Thanks for rescuing this classic!
It's amazing how from hard work little bit of money that you can turn something around. A few years back I bought a Ford expedition that ran fantastic. When I read the ad and saw the mileage and the money I figured something wasn't right. Had pictures of the outside which the paint was in bad shape from never being waxed or clean. That didn't bother me so I set up to go see it. When the person opened the doors for me the inside was a disaster. There was buttons broken switches snapped off and the guy let his kids play in the car as it was a toy or something. Even after seeing all of that I decided to go ahead and buy it but I even offered him less money than he was asking. At first he said no and then his wife said do you have the money on you and can you take the car with you. So once I came home was it I went around and made a list of what was broken and needed fixing. As the parts were coming in I started cleaning everything. After just fixing all the cosmetic things I was having neighbors stopping by asking me if it was still for sale. Like you're BMW they wrote on the windows for sale and I hadn't done anything with the glass to that point. I had neighbors offering me twice the amount that I had spent and I still hadn't even finished making every part shine. After seeing that it just blows me away how people leave money by simply being too lazy just to clean something. I love what you have done so far with this car. It just shows some hard work really does pay off. Look forward to watching the next video.
Love the BMW's!!! For future knowledge use a heat gun very lightly on the old oxidized black plastic parts. It lightly heats the surface and lasts a lot longer than just a liquid surface treatment! Love the show! Keep it going!
I sure wish we could've seen the whole rescue on this beauty. It really cleaned up nice considering paint condition. Thanks for the content. Consider using a clay bar instead of a shop rag to lift that final garbage from the paint. It real is a budget friendly produce too. Thanks again for the great video!
I have never seen a better detail.... Night and day difference. Oh you need to get a stencil made and put your mark on the inside of the Hood . Let people know your work
Everyone is doing that. There's soon gonna be time people will be looking for these thick bumpers and converting back to them. Like them or not, they are the original that sold with the car.
Mike You have done a Magnifficent job detaling that motor it looks like new car outside I love this stuff would like see more car flipping this chanel is so cool none in the uk in this class Phil in the UK
Nice work dude, you deserve a medal for just rescuing that beauty. I've always loved E21s and it would have been a crime for it to be scrapped when the bodywork is rust free. Looks very respectable and pretty after all your hard work. Because the body is rust free, I'd be tempted to give it a full respray, bring it up to showroom condition as these are becoming collectable. I've had 3 e21s and agree with you, those wheels suit it best imo. Like your choice of background music, uplifting and happy just like the e21. Looking forward to the interior details too, it's a nice colour combo. Keep up the great work dude.
A tip a friend of mine once gave me, he's a spray painter. When you wash and clean a car always start from the roof and work your way down. That way any gunk goes over dirty panels, not clean ones
Wow, you have got yourself a real rare collectors car looking good and original worth quite a lot of money over here in the UK. keep on rescuing these cars please do a follow up on the interior keep it as original as possible love watching you turn these around amazing what you can achieve with some good old fashioned hard work and elbow grease.
Another knockout mike!! Great energy. Next time consider the Samcrac technique of using plumbers putty as a claybar substitute with dish soap. Non abrasive Paint correction.
My very first new car was a BMW 320i in white with BMW racing stripes on it. It was one of the first UK cars with the new 6 cylinder engine. Fabulous car.
At the end of the day it turned out really nice and it’s not a museum piece but you could’ve helped yourself by claying before compound. the best thing commercially available for moldings etc is cerakote and I believe Walmart is carrying it now.
Have you ever tried black shoe polish on your window rubbers, just with a bit of rag, & interior trim shine on outside plastic bits such as the grill bars, you don't even need to polish the plastic.
WOW great to see an old 320I being restored. I had an old bmw 2002 back in the day and always admired the 320I . Great content .. Enjoy your channel almost 100k congrats!
if you can find a set (they're not too expensive compared to e30 and e28 bumpers), you could order a set of European e21 bumpers. they're way slimmer and make the car look much more aggressive. the us market diving boards are really hard to look at in comparison ahah, I tore my bumpers off my e28 right as I got them.
That paint came out amazingly well. I remember when I used to have the energy and ambition to detail my car. Now I just let the rain take care of it lol. Haven't waxed a car in 20 years.
Your ad for omaze was your best production yet. Absolutely faultless just like the BMW detail., Getting better all the time more ads more cash more cars.
these are the underloved model in the BMW enthusiast world. definitely have it's share of followers but pales in cult status compared to the previous 2002 and the next e30. these with Euro bumpers on them look really really good along with a 15" Alpina wheel. funny that BMW sold these like hotcakes when they came out and made them a ton of profits. front suspension isn't the best for track use but they do ride nice! well done!
Nice save. While the E21 is generally unloved, they are good little cars and will go almost forever with a little bit of maintenance. In todays insane used car market, I bet you could get good money for that car.
for anyone questioning why he's using tire shine on the mirrors and exterior trim, it's because they're all made of rubber. tire shine isn't just limited to the tires on your car, it can be used in a wide variety of applications.
Amazing results. It is like a different car. It would have been criminal if it had been scrapped. The icing on the cake would be to do something about those US spec bumpers.
awesome find, awesome restoration of the paint, looking forward to the interior, im in a minority but I dont hate the bumpers, thats what was available for the time but its just me

Fast becoming an icon,,,,,,,best act when opportunity presents itself.
Such a difference, just shows what a bit of elbow grease can do and serves as a reminder for me to clean my car too.
I love these old BMWs from when I was young. Also shows that BMW was once able to make something reliable.

WOW she looks a million times better, Absolutely outstanding work.
Price just went up by $500 after cleaning up car.
Yes, please more of the rescue classic BMW.
omg those us bumpers are so grim
He called them ‘Euro Spec’ I think! They’re definitely US Federal bumpers it’s the ‘Euro Spec’ ones he’s looking for!

Day and Night Looking Good coming together real nice
i like how the paint has faded on the hood, it looks like lightning, i would leave it like that.
Wow. I thought that car had a grungy black paint job until you started cleaning up that engine bay. That blue color is beautiful
Do a video on restoring those wheels, man. Those things would look awesome polished and clear coated.
After watching this I’m kicking myself for ever junking my first car - 1980 BMW 528i. Love this body style.
Your effort added a ton of value to that car without spending much money to accomplish it. A great :budget build”.
Huge BMW fan here, I’m so jealous of you for that car
320I. A landmark car for BMW. Definitely a project car worth saving and going through. 👍
As they say...."It's got good bones."
Michael, so glad you didn't turn the vid into a commercial for a ceramic sealer. Great vid.
Hey Michael - that trick with the Dawn in the hose nozzle works pretty well! I’d suggest splurging on a quick-disconnect so that it is easier to replenish the soap solution on the fly.
Those BMW are so pretty looking. Specially without the bench seat american bumpers.

nice job! both the engine bay and the paint shined up nicely! This is exactly as much as you can do shy of repainting...
