Michael, Out of all the junk you dragged home, this is by far the best junk and should be considered as a keeper. This is the perfect dependable shop rig for picking up anything, good job on getting it up and running. 👍👍This car was actually rated as being , if not one of the safest cars on the road the year it was made. The engines are very dependable.
The 145 with the opening windows in the load area are extremely rare now, that's a great car replacement ignition keys are still available from volvo dealers
I owned 11 volvo's all pre 1974. The B-20 engines were bullet proof. I had two 145's and raised five children while the 140's were the primary family car. The Transmissions were from the Borg Warner 3 speed automatics thru the four speed and four speed with over drive. You have one of the finest automobiles that have ever been built.
There you have probably found one of the best cars ever. Some rust protection underneath, ordinary maintenance and that wagon will run forever. I would love to use it as a daily
I had a 74 Volvo 245 , fabulous old car , there 's no reasonably priced ones left over the pond here , all either rotted away or pampered and pricey . I would love to have been given the opportunity to rescue that old beauty .
I once owned a 122 Volvo, such a solid car, the way the doors shut can't be matched, like this one. Same engine as this one. It will serve you well as long as you love it.
I recently started two 30+ year old Volvos after many years sitting and they idled right away, even if it's on 2 cylinders at 200rpm on bad fuel, they'll run. Gotta love them
I’m a Volvo guy, so I need to subscribe. After the jeep episode, I see this, and love it! I own a 1969 Volvo 121 2 door sedan, b20/4speed+OD, so this is really sweet
15:25 the plate is a phenolic spacer, it IS required, it prevents the fuel from boiling into the pump and vapor locking. Without the spacer it'll vapor lock at idle/slow city driving. It did that too on my B21 Volvo redblock (the OHC version of that mill) Also without the spacer is pushes the arm outside of it's travel and can damage the pump too !
I see these on the road over here in Sweden still being used as daily drivers, usually being driven by some old man who has owned it since new, they just keep on going!
So awesome! I've never been more confident about a will it run-video, it's a Volvo! To some level I would agree that the low mileage has something to do with it working so good, but it is mostly because of the quality. It is not my favourite make, even though I have one right now, I've just always known it to be solid and reliable! I had a great time watching, thank you and your dad for making one of the best channels!
WHOOO boy! you WAAY overfilled those Su Dashpot pistons! when filling them you are supposed to fill the inner piston sleeve to a little below the top of that, not the top of the dashpot itself xD It helps to lift the piston to the top to fill them
Man I'm jealous. That thing is MINT! VP Autoparts is in SC, and they specialize in a lot of old Volvo stuff, might be able to help you out with some of those parts (I did a quick search on their site and didn't find the specific linkage bushings, but I may not have been looking in the right place). I know they've been helping David Bello with his 164 resurrection project, and I believe have contacts overseas to help with sourcing and/or recreating OE parts that have been NLA for decades. Aside from that, it's really just junkyards and word-of-mouth to find what you need. But there's a surprising number of Volvo people around. I mentioned David Bello earlier, he's made a lot of friends all over the country recently, and might be able to point you in the direction of certain parts if need be. Good luck, that thing is amazing!
As a swede I enjoy seeing old Volvos of all shape and sizes come back to life. That’s a great part of Volvo history you got there the car will last a million miles if maintained correctly. Watch out for the rust trolls they love older Volvos. Nice video.
I used to love my 1971 Volvo 145 Estate (wagon) automatic, weekends it towed my car trailer with oval track hot rods on it all over England, and In the week it was the family 5 seater.. Volvos from earlier designed a fail safe braking system where If one brake line blew out you still had 70% braking on 3 wheels, 2 front and 1 rear google It... Volvo designed shock absorbing bumpers years before many other car makers also.. Now many years later after seeing your 145 my love for them has come back again. OH. 145 stands for !st series, 4 cylinders 5 doors/ the next generation were 245.. Thanks for your videos - Ian - UK.
Sump plug = ring wrench, and always put the fuel filter before the fuel pump it saves the pump failing from crud, volvo recomend mercon type ATF for the su dashpots. Also if the fluid is burning off through the intake then the needle seal is leaking and needs replacing.
That’s a FABULOUS find! Enjoy that classic. Those are terrific and dependable cars. Loved seeing the Mk.III I hope you can get it straightened out. I LOVE those cars…and I’m not even a Ford/Lincoln guy!
You definitely want to keep hold of that in the condition it will only go up in value get her reconditioned for the road and keep it safe what a truly lovely car
G'day from Australia, had lot of SU carbs back in the day, we never overfilled the oil gallery on the carbs just enough to have a little bit of resistance on the needle slide otherwise it made it run like a dog! And never put heavy weight oil in them, we used very thin oil like singer sowing machine oil. Love the channel keep up the great work. Very enjoyable......
Those towers on the carbs are called dashpots and the sliding internal components are called pistons. Yes, you top them up with something like 30-40 engine oil. On cars that have sat for a while, the pistons sometimes stick due to internal corrosion. Not a big problem. You just remove the two screws holding the dashpot and polish the insides. Great work :)
This is a super cool Volvo, it's in such great condition. If I had this it would be my daily driver without a second thought. Just imagine taking her to car shows for fun and showing off a true survivor!!!
Volvo back in the 1960’s had a good reputation of quality. Then simple strong machines. The world has changed since these cars were New. No computer control. The few fuel injected cars were mechanical fuel injection. Electric timing devise were sold as add one. Points and condensers were the norm. My first car was a BMW 1600. No power steering . It had only 6 fuses on the car.
Thank you for getting this one going. I've never been a huge Volvo fan, but I'm a sucker for station wagons, and I love seeing people revive cars that your average entry level collector would ignore. There are too few cars like this being saved, and that car is in fantastic condition. I wouldn't even drive that one much. There can't be that many unrestored cars like that out there in such great condition with such low mileage. These aren't like muscle cars. People didn't just buy them and park them, so there can't be that many low mileage examples out there. That interior looks almost new. I would definitely get in touch with some Volvo people and see what kind of interest you can drum up. That car should be preserved.
Kurt Cobain had a Volvo. It's a tank. Very reliable. That car is a keeper. Man, you live in a nice part of the States. I really enjoyed watching this episode. You guys rock....
I've owned both a '70 and a '69, like yours, except mine were all manual 4 speeds. Both of those years also had the rear side windows that opened, too. They're truly one of the finest engineered cars ever built, IMHO. If ever get a chance to drive a stick shift, you'll experience a whole new level of fun. Thanks for rescuing the old girl and good luck with the facelift!
I recently bought a 240 wagon that made that exact noise you are getting from the drive train. To save you some time it was the driveshaft centre bearing. Pop the drive shaft out. Press old bearing off, install the new one and noise gone. Love the car btw, my Grandma bought one brand new in 1970 just the same as the one on this video, even the same color. Its still in the family and going well!!
My first car was a 1972 Volvo 145, bright yellow :-) Loved it to bits and your example is such a beauty. Great find and please make her great again :-)
the 100 / 200 series is about the best cars built for decades, they are tough, reliable, easy to maintain, comfortable and a well kept secret, they are fun to drive
That is one rare 145 and in excellent shape. You could advertise it in Sweden and get plenty of interest. Check if it has the third row of seats in the back and you have a rarity on your hands.
That Volvo is a very cool car. It may be slow but if maintained will last for many years and many miles. I love to see this stuff. Keep up the good work Mike.
I hope we see more of this! Let's see that red engine shine and hear that horn! Such an amazing auto. I am so excited to begin restoring my 71. If only it had the small amount of rust yours has... Great video!
Cool old volvo 7 seater with kids seats remember as a kid sitting in the back .try your volvo dealer .for the Bush. And online there are ar least 3 classic volvo parts emporiums
It's a Volvo... of cause it runs!! 😉 It a really nice specimen our got there. I bet you still can get the parts you are missing. If not in USA then Sweden. Please take good care of her 👍
Wow, did this bring back memories. Back around 1977, I bought a 1970 Volvo 145 automatic exactly like this one for $400. I named it "Ernest Lee Sincere" and kept it for around 10 years as a spare car and loaner for friends and family. Besides reliable transportation, with the rear seat folded down you could carry a surprising amount of stuff (including a full-size garden tiller).
Looks like it is in very good condition. The wrench that you are using for the drain plug is actually called svensknøgle in Danish, translated to English It's a swedish key. So perfect for a swedish car.
Lovely car. Such good base to build from. Check out the Simon Stallenhag artwork. He features them in. Very cool now. In the 1980’s and 90’s everyone wanted rid of them. In the 2000’s there was none left. 20 years later everyone’s starting to see the cool look. Dead slow, flat engine. Looks good though. I’d love one.
Hello from the UK. I have had Volvos mostly all my life. I started with 144 then a 164 (withjust short of 1 milliom miles on the clock) right up to my 10th V70. Due to age and bad eyes I have just given up driving at 70. My last Volvo I had was the mighty V70R which was played with up to 400BHP. Anything you need to know join the Volvo owners club worldwide. They do a range of common spares and have loads of members all over the USA and worldwide. Also please get this lovely old girl reegistered on their website. Cheers, Bob
I recall a friend of mine that knew Volvos up and down at that time, and he said they were broken in at 100, 000 miles. They would easily get more than 200,000 miles on them with routine maintenance.
My Goodness, That Brings Back Some Memories, My Parents Had A ‘70 144 Sedan Like That When We Where Kids, Sold It To My Cousin, Then He Gave It To Me As A Teenager, By Then The Odometer Had Triple Over 300K, Almost 400K, It Still Ran, Drank Lots Of Oil Though, Nothing Quick About It, Being A Northern Car All It’s Life, I Had Cool/Wet Feet, With Rotted Floorboards, Before My Father Made Me Junk It For Safety Reasons LoL!! It Was Tough As Nails.. Keep Up The Good Work Good Sir..
Hej från Sverige! 😉 Have been following you since the first 911 episode, keep up the awesome work! 😊👍 Great to see a Volvo at your channel, been driving/owning Volvos for over 30years...
Dear Someone B. I highly recommend to watch Volvo channel David Bello. He patina restored a gorgeous green 164 4dr sedan, called Ivy. Next will be a green wagon. Best regards luck and health.
my first car was a 71 volvo, i tuned and ported, added a hot cam and big exhaust. loved that car! mine was a 4 speed with electrically operated overdrive
Ipd in Portland Oregon has a ton of parts Super Cool 😎 I’m a Volvo lover. On my 2nd 740 wagon This car will sell in a minute if you want to part with it. Huge fan base.
WOW ! What a great specimen of a car! I dont know why, but i always get a little warm in my heart when i see a good old 145. I dont know how many i have destroyed on "Stubbrace (farm-race)" That car was prob built in Torslanda (On the West coast) in Sweden. The -69 was the first 145 with the B20.
That is a really neat car, I haven't seen one like that before. It is in such good shape I would be happy to drive it to work every day after it was all sorted out. Have fun!
Dear Budget Buildz guys 👍👌👏 Simply fantastic! You definitely hit the jackpot with this great old Volvo. I would love to own this original and low mileage wagon and so would David Bello (at least I guess so). I highly recommend his channel, he's an ingenious Volvo enthusiast. I think that VP Auto parts is able to deliver the bushings for the different linkages. It's a really great company (Volvo specialists). Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you.
Hello from Sweden I love your channel You can get parts for the car without any problems The right front fender isnt the original (70-72) and very hard to get even in Sweden 😅 Love the car Drive it and have fun
Great cars built like tanks run forever great safety built into every Volvo good to watch it brought back to life hope you do a follow up on it well worth saving.
This was a great video. I'm looking at a 74 145 volvo. I have been researching ruthlessly about the 140 series and maintenance. This is by far the best video I have seen. Q: why did you install and additional fuel filter? I read the fuel filter was mounted behind the motor drivers side.
This is going to look freaking amazing once you hook it up with the detailing! and maybe some tires.... I don't think tires should be "crispy"... That is an insane find....
Nice find. These barn finds are all over you tube. All I ever find are total rust buckets. I would have loved getting my hands on that 64 Comet you did a while back. How do you do it.
There are many Volvo fans that would bring the 145S to "as new" condition. I had a 142S (1969), and it was a great car. I still remember just how good the Heater performed, in the middle of winter. You should still be able to buy original Volvo parts for the car. It definitely deserves saving. I would fit a Pertronix electronic ignition. The engine performs much better after this cheap refinement, and no more points gap to set - ever!
Awesome find guys, lovely car in great condition, it looks like there's a few paint issues and is the autobox whining? I drope the fluid and have a look. That car is so practical and strong, it's got to be a keeper! Missing my Volvo soooo much...
"See if the motor turns over".. Isn´t that sweet. It´s a volvo b18. I could have been submerged in a lake for twenty yrs and still turn over. Almost impossible to kill. Really nice wagon thou, they starting to pick up value, so you´re doin the right thing.. :)
My friend who lived across the street's mom had one of these back in the mid-late 70s. Puke green, black interior. It died in the 80s, but as far as I know they kept it stored for years after that in the back. First time I saw it, I was like "what kinda car is that?" He said "a VoVo!" A VoVo?? 😂 We were like 5.
I am not surprised about the easy start. Own a car with the same engine. Been in storage for the last 25 years and always fires up even with several years between each attempt. Never replaced fuel pump or points.
Michael,
Out of all the junk you dragged home, this is by far the best junk and should be considered as a keeper. The best "Junk"
@@lazarusbambakidis6820 No it;s called the TANK we have one with 260k miles on the clock still going strong and original..
That Volvo 4 banger is one of the most durable engines ever made. They go hundreds of thousands of miles with normal maintenance and care. Great find!
The 145 with the opening windows in the load area are extremely rare now, that's a great car replacement ignition keys are still available from volvo dealers
Definitely need to give David Bello a shout on this one. He can direct you where to go for hard to find parts. That thing is in incredible shape
Yes!
I second Chris Bates
I owned 11 volvo's all pre 1974. The B-20 engines were bullet proof. I had two 145's and raised five children while the 140's were the primary family car. The Transmissions were from the Borg Warner 3 speed automatics thru the four speed and four speed with over drive. You have one of the finest automobiles that have ever been built.
Someone loved this Wagon, but nobody else did. Glad it’s getting a news lease on life!!
Good Job, Y’all!
There you have probably found one of the best cars ever. Some rust protection underneath, ordinary maintenance and that wagon will run forever. I would love to use it as a daily

I once owned a 122 Volvo, such a solid car, the way the doors shut can't be matched, like this one. Same engine as this one. It will serve you well as long as you love it.
That Volvo is like a Swedish tank. Those B20 engines are rock solid. What a great find. Please keep it.
@ Brad no the B18 is a far better engine, the B20 does'n't run so smooth.
@@willemstreutgers1154 That’s true. Both engines are known for longevity though.
I recently started two 30+ year old Volvos after many years sitting and they idled right away, even if it's on 2 cylinders at 200rpm on bad fuel, they'll run. Gotta love them

Yup! I think none in my area, but I'm sure they're still used in Norway too! I've never been more confident about a will it run-video 👌😁
Yes, and if you want parts you go out in the woods and shake a tree and parts come falling down
VP autoparts in us also, will have all the parts you need,

What an amazing find. Old Volvos are so cool and wagons, are even better. Great video!
Yessss a Volvo ! And a 145 that is !!!
She's a keeper, these are getting rare in wagon form.
Warms my heart to see you take care of that old Swedish VOLVO...Had one 144 myself once best car i ever had :)
Guy from Sweden. really nice Volvo you got hold on, SAVE IT. In that condition it is an expensive car even in Sweden.
Happy you are saving another wagon as I did. My 86 245 now has over 325K miles and still doesn't use oil. Enjoy the project!!
Volvo, Sweden will be very proud of you boys for fixing one of their finest. Great job and look forward to further updates.

Great to see a Volvo at your channel, been driving/owning Volvos for over 30years...
Volvos sviker aldrig ! För det mesta iallafall haha
You have made your channel so enjoyable to watch you and your Father are a pleasurer to watch thank you for your content.
Those floor mats are a cool vintage CoCo style. You should get some for the Porsche or BMWs!
It should be easy to get a new ignition switch and keys, or a used one - this car is SUCH a classic. Might not be cheap, will take a while of course.
Oh man !
I LOVE this !
My first car was a 142-S sedan w/b-20 SU carbs !
My Mother had one of those in blue and with a manual gearbox. I personally have had 2 Volvo 164's, so if you find one of those I'll be glued!
Ipd in Portland Oregon has a ton of parts
Super Cool 😎
I’m a Volvo lover. On my 2nd 740 wagon
This car will sell in a minute if you want to part with it.
Have fun!
Dear Budget Buildz guys
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic!
Nice nice car and reliable. Worth rescued and detailing, then put on wheels. It is a value. And very original.
Hello from Sweden
I love your channel
You can get parts for the car without any problems
The right front fender isnt the original (70-72) and very hard to get even in
Sweden 😅
Love the car
Drive it and have fun
Great work! Great video! Keep 'em comin! Great seeing you and your dad lauging together gwttin these ol' gals runnin!
That little car looks great what a find you did it again love your Videos Always great time
Great cars built like tanks run forever great safety built into every Volvo good to watch it brought back to life hope you do a follow up on it well worth saving.
My earliest memories are of my Dad's 71 mustard yellow 145 S. I've been trying to find one for years.
Seems like you guys are having all the fun!!!! awesome!
3D printing is so cool for those old bushings.
It would make a great little camping getaway car, great wagon, good video, keep up the good work
Yes definitely show a detail of the Volvo. Great find. Good job
I’m really digging these unique cars you find and get them running!
"See if the motor turns over".. Isn´t that sweet. It´s a volvo b18. I could have been submerged in a lake for twenty yrs and still turn over. Almost impossible to kill. Really nice wagon thou, they starting to pick up value, so you´re doin the right thing.. :)
B20s in the 140s
My friend who lived across the street's mom had one of these back in the mid-late 70s. Puke green, black interior. It died in the 80s, but as far as I know they kept it stored for years after that in the back.
First time I saw it, I was like "what kinda car is that?"
He said "a VoVo!"
A VoVo?? 😂
We were like 5.
I am not surprised about the easy start. Own a car with the same engine. Been in storage for the last 25 years and always fires up even with several years between each attempt. Never replaced fuel pump or points.
If you put an old roof rack and a old soute case on the volvo. That will make it complete, and really nice looking. 👌
