The way you're able to balance and smoothly transition between straightforward communication and off-the-wall humor deserves to be both applauded and studied.
I think another thing that’s important to grenade lack of skill is that they were probably even spammier in ‘07 tf2 Like bro if I was playing dustbowl or cramped 2fort for a significant figure of my playtest games, I’d remove nades ASAP 😭
Slopes and props have really weird interactions with explosions. Looking at these TFC maps, they have far less geometry than even TF2's 2fort and dustbowl. Grenade jumping would have been far less reliable if your nades rolled all around the ground like Demo's pipe bombs, and they couldn't be used as an actual grenade if they tuned down the roll (like iron bomber). I think the skill aspect just wouldn't have carried over. Like you said, maps (especially on launch) were also smaller than TFC.
13:20 technically the wrap assassin bauble is a grenade too. If it hits the ground it has an incredibly small aoe where it does like 4 damage. Although I suppose it is launched and not thrown so uh...
In short, if you curious why grenade was removed: imagine every class in tf2 have an additional slot for Loose Cannon with passive reloading and ability to deal a full damage without double donk
I think removing them completely was probably the best move, but I wonder if some classes could have benefited from a grenade of some kind. Maybe Pyro could have kept incendiary grenades, but would have to throw them like in Pre-Fortress. It'd give him a little bit of area denial and some asymmetrical attack options. I dunno could have been fun.
With the Jungle Inferno update adding in the Gas Passer, it's mechanics of "recharge item by waiting X seconds or do Y amount of damage" would have worked wonderfully for the grenades, mines and utility items in the Grenade item slot. If Grenades, Mines and Utility items were to be added into the game, put in a slot 7, the Grenade slot token and also give Slot 7 guns and melees for it. Gas Passer type mechanics, without the 60 second and 600 damage requirements for recharging would have been a great way to balance grenades.
With so much different stuff added, the game really needs to give (some?) classes new weapon slot. There is a lot of stuff stuck in balance limbo because of its design and the slot it uses, it either has to be overpowered or garbage, there is no in-between. A sandwich slot on Heavy is an obvious example which always should have been in the game, but never added likely because of the Spaghetti Code this game has. Gas Passer and Thermal Thruster on Pyro could had their own shared slot, insanely expanding not only gameplay options but also giving him more room to balance his stuff around having that. Same Pyro's example could be applied to nearly every class in the game, except the ones already heavily lacking options (looking at you, medic and spy)
I seriously love your vids. Your style of comedy is so unique and hilarious, your delivery is on point, and your points on game design are really well put together and communicated. I think you have some real potential outside of TF2 videos. Can't wait to see what you do in the future.
This is why when you make a tfc map you set the classes to have zero grenades at respawn and then use pick-ups around the map to control the grenade economy and how many grenades you even get. I feel that is more balanced. Could even make a map where nobody has frags.

the third tip is genuinely comedy gold, how do you even come up with this stuff, does it just hit you in a mighty flash of unbridled genius or do you spend a millennia slaving away at the perfect joke?
technically the gas paser (especially the mvm one with explosive gas) and the fireball spell could be considered a spirituals successors to the napalm and the mad milk is basically a giant midle finger to pyro, heavys and demokights
hey, any tips on finding the midas pot? i've got quite a stock of bodies, but they're dehydrating and decomposing rapidly, and i don't want that lost weight to become more lost profits.
Anyone intrigued by what counted for "skill expression" in TFC should look for the TFC frag videos "Skillout" and "Last Dinosaur 2." Both classic, both an interesting time capsule of the state of Team Fortress before the sequel came out.
Give us a demolitions stockpile mode, with a map set in the Demo's home in the highlands. Everyone gets class specific grenades and increased base health due to experimental haggis injections or something and let everyone roam wild with reckless abandon spamming the level in explosions.
I think grenades could be worked into MVM in the action slot, choose between power up canteens, which gives you powerful effects anytime, anywhere or powerful AOE damage or utility in the grenade.
Great video, excellent side tangents. Good mix of cut humor and drawn out bits. One of the things I’d like to complain about is how at the first financial tip (which is working out excellent, the local newspaper is even recognizing me as a “mysterious” grave desecrator, whatever that means) you try to continue the point about grenade visibility that was 30 seconds ago. Imo this was really awkward pacing, both for the sake of the video and for my adhd riddled brain. I think it would’ve been better if you would’ve either cut out the addendum after the first tip, or restructured that part of the video so that the re-entry into the point wasn’t so awkward. I look like a total nerd pointing this out but I got crazy whiplash from how lost I was at this point. Besides that, great vid, looking forwards to your next post.
grenades could work in tf2 arena mode or mannpower, if they have the same trail as grenades from half life 2 and have an extremely loud bounce and also can't be cooked it would be used more for flushing out opponents out of a corner rather than outright damaging them grenades should also just not be able to be regained anywhere other than a resupply locker
Valve could add grenades into the game the same way they added jarate, mad milk and the gas passer. (Frag grenade) You can only throw one grenade. Does not explode on impact. The grenade has a 5 second fuse. Replenishes for 10 seconds. The blast radius is 15 meters or 49 feet. (just like in real life) Deals 100 damage if an enemy stands near or on top of the grenade. Deals 50 damage if an enemy stands in the blast radius.
