A melee weapon is a shorter gun with infinite ammo and better spread. It also doubles as a light snack if you hate yourself.

Fun Fact: Payday 2 has 94 melee weapons and there is no reason to ever use 91 of them
More like... 87? The Katana for high damage, Ice Pick for same high damage but you trade swing speed for concealment, the Golden Spoon for high damage and a quick charge (as opposed to the Katana's faster swing speed), the two electric weapons for stunning enemies, and then the two poison weapons for killing enemies and stunning them (the last four being highly concealable). There's also the event-only piggy hammer which can kill any enemy in one hit and spawns more of that event's importance valuable, but that's whatever.
Outside of those, you're mostly using a melee weapon for aesthetics or flavor. Which isn't a bad thing, as it gives a player a bit more agency in their loadouts, but some weapons are just straight upgrades compared to others.
@@llmkursk8254 didn't the ice pick trade weapon range for concealment? Also the spoons are super niche weapons that are only really viable on some infiltrator builds
@@PearoIGuess Technically, but the swing speed is also not as fast as the katana either. Spoons have a ~2 second charge time, so they're actually not bad for builds that don't require concealament.
Yeah I bought the ice pick and never switched back😂. It's really good for a sociopath build

battlefield (specifically bf1) also has neat melees imo. theres 3 classes of melee, that do more damage and swing at varying speeds. the melees are valid weapons that you can hold out, not just an ability on a button (though they can do that too). they also allow for instakill backstabs like the spy (along with a cool animation). the bayonet charge also instantly kills any enemy you hit, although it makes you very vulnerable (like demoknight).
Also, they destroy terrain, opening lines of sight or removing obstacles to movement
And when you ride the horse the best way to kill someone is with a melee attack (at least for me)

In terms of PvP games then yes, Melee is often overlooked, but if we want to include PvE then the Vermintide and Darktide series of games have an incredibly detailed and extensive melee system, much to the point where only using your melee for a whole mission isn’t a bad idea.

Partizan's Puncher is such an underrated melee, shame nobody seems to talk about it after the nerfs in Gun Mettle :(

DRGs pickaxe comes to mind, solely because its a functional pickaxe, it can and does bonk things, it has a heavy attack, but its main thing is digging, its a main part of your kit that the game makes you understand how useful it is, it can kill the small swarmers that come in HUGE groups instantly, its heavy kills most grunt enemies instantly, it can even stun bigger ones in a pinch, it can be upgraded to be better at killing but its always best at digging, even heavy attacking will instantly breaking terrain in a pinch, the heavy helps with digging quickly in some cases and it feels so damn good

i dont feel like theres any good way to define melee weapons. like, some are more for utility than anything, and others come with their own projectile, so a melee is really just anything the game says is a melee
a melee weapon is you hit them instead of shooting them
A melee is the third slot weapon.
Unless you are Spy, or some unique flavors of Demoman, this weapon will usually be your least used weapon; as its common traits of minimal range and usually lackluster killpower make it very unreliable, and its one common strength, being a bottomless magazine and infinite ammo, is one that is only rarely valuable.
These weapons are, except in the aforementioned case od Spy and some Demomen, quite commonly exchanged for weapons with even worse applications in actual combat, for some kind of auxiliary benefit to the class, as the actual combat application of the weapon is of often negligible benefit, as compared to whatever other benefit the weapon provides. This philosophy is best exemplified by Engineer, whose stock melee has this function.
My favorite melee weapon is the Pompsona

I'm torn on it. On one hand, it is probably the peak of comedy. On the other, my brain gets so derailed I cannot for the life of me process any and all information that was supposed to be in the preceding sentence.
The market gardener is the best designed weapon in any game ever. It's just such a fun thing and the amount of skill the devs entrusted their players in having to get the best out of it is crazy. And because it's so much harder to use than any ability or watever in other games it gives the user so much flexibility to do cool things with it.

I'm glad you talked about only other games for 80% of the video about TF2 melee weapons. It's honestly a breath of fresh air to see those other games even if they don't do the melee gameplay perfectly.
Rainbow six has a pretty unique melee system that even has a few specific characters that have their kit basically based around it and it's all thanks to its soft destruction system. Every operator can make a small hole you can see/shoot through in some floors/walls just by meleeing it, and can completely destroy door barricades just by hitting them three times. There are also a variety of bulletproof gadgets that are rendered near useless, or even broken just by meleeing them like Maestro and Mira. And shoot, some operators main gadgets are based around melee like Sledge or Aruni.
The system 100 present is a wrench based system, to a point where getting a knife kill is considered a joke, but it is a pretty unique melee system.
My definition of a melee weapon is "a weapon that doesn't use projectiles, and usually is meant for close up combat, but sometimes can also be thrown at the opponent if all else fails."

A melee weapon is an object used to inflict slashing bludgeoning or piercing damage to a target while not discarding a weapon or weapon component
The jokes in this video have some of the most schizophrenic writing I’ve seen since Gaming in the Clinton Years and it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen this month.

Melee weapons in an FPS game are either one of three things:
1. A specific fallback weapon when a ranged weapon isn't an option (i.e. totally dry on both primary and secondary ammo), such as the traditional combat knife
2. stealth kill button that isn't actually wielded as a separate weapon but instead is a keypress which near-instantly deals an amount of damage to a nearby target (and may or may not lock you into a kill animation), again see the knife.
3. An incredibly powerful borderline primary weapon to reward being willing to close in with enemies that have a range advantage on you. The Trench Raider in Battlefield 1, for instance.
This does not apply if your game ends in "Tide" and is a licensed Warhammer property, however.
My favorite is 3 with the gravity hammers of halo and if it counts the kreige's buzz are in borderlands 2
11:05 I lost it, what an outstanding line.

A melee *weapon* to *me* is where you have choices of different melees, rather than just having the one stock Melee attack to use in a pinch. TF2 vs OW is a great example of a game with Melee *weapons* vs a game that has Melee attacks in it.

You just gave me an idea for another Scout Primary. It would be a Scattergun with a giant Bamboo barrel that he calls "The Bamboozler", which applies 5-second Bleed on hit, but clip size is reduced to 1 in the chamber and damage per pellet is reduced slightly. To compensate for this, reload speed is double the speed that a Force of Nature would be, and max primary ammo is increased slightly.
The implication is that Scout shoves a bunch of thorns and metal scrap into the chamber, causing the bleed effect.
I am the token ultrakill ambassador and I say unto thee: there are 2 melee weapons and each have specific strengths in specific situations, but you can equip both and even keep them on different buttons! The game encourages (almost requires tbh) you to switch on the fly and gives each weapon a different use case meaning deciding which melee to punch someone or something with is literally always an active choice. Play Ultrakill!!!!
Splitgate has an interestening melee attack. It deals 50 damage, but when you drop faster, it increases and will eventually one hit you. Since the game is build around portals (like in Portal), this mechanic is pretty cool.

I wish the southern hospitality did turn your entire devices language to Arabic for a random amount of time.
Anything that can be used without consuming some sort of ammo or ever leaving the players hand would likely be the most concise answer for a mele definition.
A melee weapon is, by definition, a distant relative to the Louisiana Freshwater Crawdad. It contains many of the same aspects as its relative, but functions differently.
A weapon that’s used to hit someone using the physical force YOU exert; something you use to swing, stab or bash with that doesn’t expend ammo. But expending ammunition can be possible with certain weapons, like maybe an axe with a trigger on the blade that fires a shotgun shell from the blade whenever it detects pressure- you still swing the axe, so it still counts.
he can't help but repeat himself constantly without really saying anything... still very professional editing for such a small channel.. liked
It's a great topic for a video and I'm glad to hear someone sing the praises of TF2. Loved the animated bits as well. I did find the timeline a little confusing, like maybe the points are a little conflated together.

Deep Rock Galactic has a great example of dual-role melee weapons. The pickaxe, as well as the drills, are mobility tools that double as melee weapons.
Melee weapons in video games are what happens when the playtesters suck at both positioning themselves away from their enemies and aiming
Adding onto Halo: Reach had assassinations, which make you feel cool if you could pull it off, and in Combat Evolved the weapon that you are currently holding has an effect on the range and speed of your melee attack
A melee weapon is a model in a video game carried by your player character that typically resembles a sharp and/or blunt object, used to deal a set amount of damage towards enemy players/NPCs.
deadbolt music goes insane tho
I feel like the pickaxe from Deep Rock Galactic is a good example of both a “Wrench” and a “Knife”, as it can both be used for mining through terrain, and as a combat tool due to it’s power attack and heal on kill.
A melee weapon is short ranged, generally having 1-2 meters at most too hit from, usually doesn't use ammunition, and perhaps most vitally has a hitbox rather than a projectile or hitscan
I noticed you enjoy the deadbolt soundtrack, good taste.
The Finals is another example of there being a sort of low damaging melee for everyone, but the choice of choosing a specific melee weapon instead of a gun that has some cool things, like the sledgehammer that can break map geometry and nearly instakill people, as well as the dual katanas which can reflect bullets to where you're aiming.
"You know what's weird? Hyenas." *shows a picture of an African wild dog.
You though we wouldn't notice?
The definition of a melee weapon is a weapon that is never leaves the wilder's hand during combat.
I think one of the best examples of an awesome FPS melee weapon is the Shovel from Shotgun Farmers. In has both combat and utility, in your own terms it's both a wrench and a knife. And it's just fun as hell to whack people with.
-it functions like the melee in Halo, two hits from the front will kill someone, provided they don't have armor and a hit from the back will instakill them no matter what
-it has the effect of the knife from CS where you run the fastest while brandishing it
-it has the added use where if you whack a weapon on the ground or a gun plant with it, it destroys it, so you can use this to starve your enemies of weapon spawns
-there's a mutator in the game that gives it a knockback effect, thus it can be used to create space and make melee duels that much more interesting
Just one of many examples that prove that Shotgun Farmers is a gaming masterpiece!
