Friends vs Friends, a game listed when you showed a bunch of random steam games earlier in the video, has a melee thats on par or better than half the guns, with the ability in the game to use cards that have effects to have synergy with your melee weapon
The market gardener is the best designed weapon in any game ever. It's just such a fun thing and the amount of skill the devs entrusted their players in having to get the best out of it is crazy. And because it's so much harder to use than any ability or watever in other games it gives the user so much flexibility to do cool things with it.
battlefield (specifically bf1) also has neat melees imo. theres 3 classes of melee, that do more damage and swing at varying speeds. the melees are valid weapons that you can hold out, not just an ability on a button (though they can do that too). they also allow for instakill backstabs like the spy (along with a cool animation). the bayonet charge also instantly kills any enemy you hit, although it makes you very vulnerable (like demoknight).
Rainbow six has a pretty unique melee system that even has a few specific characters that have their kit basically based around it and it's all thanks to its soft destruction system. Every operator can make a small hole you can see/shoot through in some floors/walls just by meleeing it, and can completely destroy door barricades just by hitting them three times. There are also a variety of bulletproof gadgets that are rendered near useless, or even broken just by meleeing them like Maestro and Mira. And shoot, some operators main gadgets are based around melee like Sledge or Aruni. The system 100 present is a wrench based system, to a point where getting a knife kill is considered a joke, but it is a pretty unique melee system.
i dont feel like theres any good way to define melee weapons. like, some are more for utility than anything, and others come with their own projectile, so a melee is really just anything the game says is a melee
A melee is the third slot weapon. Unless you are Spy, or some unique flavors of Demoman, this weapon will usually be your least used weapon; as its common traits of minimal range and usually lackluster killpower make it very unreliable, and its one common strength, being a bottomless magazine and infinite ammo, is one that is only rarely valuable. These weapons are, except in the aforementioned case od Spy and some Demomen, quite commonly exchanged for weapons with even worse applications in actual combat, for some kind of auxiliary benefit to the class, as the actual combat application of the weapon is of often negligible benefit, as compared to whatever other benefit the weapon provides. This philosophy is best exemplified by Engineer, whose stock melee has this function.
Yes, I was also was looking for the #16474848585765 video saying positive things about Ultrakill. The feedbacker provides positive feedback to your cranium in large quantities (like airblast but you punch it)!
A melee *weapon* to *me* is where you have choices of different melees, rather than just having the one stock Melee attack to use in a pinch. TF2 vs OW is a great example of a game with Melee *weapons* vs a game that has Melee attacks in it.
The jokes in this video have some of the most schizophrenic writing I’ve seen since Gaming in the Clinton Years and it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen this month.
12:08 One game I can think of is Deep Rock Galactic, though in that game the melee weapons as offensive tools is more of a secondary use, because the Pickaxes + Driller’s Drills primary uses are for digging and mining minerals Edit: you can also upgrade the pickaxes with a power attack that deals more damage, which itself can be upgraded to have a shorter cooldown, deal even more damage or a larger hit radius (though the Power Attack upgrades can only be equipped one at a time)

Splitgate has an interestening melee attack. It deals 50 damage, but when you drop faster, it increases and will eventually one hit you. Since the game is build around portals (like in Portal), this mechanic is pretty cool.
A melee weapon: a weapon that does not require you to manually pull a trigger or launch out of a blaster, it requires only 1 hand (sometimes 2) to use. You have to be up close & personal with it
I like how krunker handles it's knives, the knifes are both the wrench and the knife. They can help with movement by controlling slidehopping momentum, and when thrown, it can one-shot any player.
Yeah I think it was Deadlock. Kaluka put one tiny clip of Deadlock at 16:04, so that means he was definitely aware of the game when making this video. And I'm pretty sure there was still an NDA in effect when this video was uploaded, which would explain the roundabout way of mentioning it. Deadlock doesn't exactly fit the video's premise, because you don't choose your weapon in Deadlock, only your character. So "choosing to use a melee weapon instead of a ranged weapon" just doesn't apply conceptually. It does have an engaging melee system though. No cool melee weapons, but a solid system that rewards players for using it.
Melee weapons in an FPS game are either one of three things: 1. A specific fallback weapon when a ranged weapon isn't an option (i.e. totally dry on both primary and secondary ammo), such as the traditional combat knife 2. stealth kill button that isn't actually wielded as a separate weapon but instead is a keypress which near-instantly deals an amount of damage to a nearby target (and may or may not lock you into a kill animation), again see the knife. 3. An incredibly powerful borderline primary weapon to reward being willing to close in with enemies that have a range advantage on you. The Trench Raider in Battlefield 1, for instance. This does not apply if your game ends in "Tide" and is a licensed Warhammer property, however.
21:00 I will give a thing here, as someone who uses it, Tribalman's Shiv applies stacking bleed procs, which does help if you end up in a one on one melee fight with a heavy. Not really better than stock, but I like it's design. C:
@@kingol4801 aye? I get conflicting evidence on it so I don't quite know for sure anymore. XD Maybe it just does on MVM is why I am thinking it, or bleed from diff sources like my BF said.
The Finals is another example of there being a sort of low damaging melee for everyone, but the choice of choosing a specific melee weapon instead of a gun that has some cool things, like the sledgehammer that can break map geometry and nearly instakill people, as well as the dual katanas which can reflect bullets to where you're aiming.
I love melee weapons in DRG. Besides their quite obvious purpose of mining terrain, they are really versatile in combat. The power attack can instantly take down immediate threats like a slasher that got too close or a small group of grunts. It is also extremely efficient at dealing with heavily armoured targets that your guns might struggle with even going as fast as piercing the usually invulnerable front armour of an oppressor. If used on big targets it also saves a good chunk of ammo in a game where every last bullet can count. When used in combination with the vampire perk it is the only non limited way of healing yourself and a good way to get a consistent self revive with Iron Will. There's also the robot enemies who are infamous bullet sponges but have an extreme weakness to melee mostly going down in a single power attack (if your can get close enough).
Indie Developers love watching videos like this because it reminds us to think of these things because of how easy it is to forget these things when you got so much to already worry about in a game
vermintide lives by its melee combat, with each melee having block angles, stamina usage and combos, and each part of the attack combo having different attack ranges, angles, cleave etc.
I feel like I just stumbled on gold, holy good god this video is perfectly paced, the jokes are delivered super well, and there's so many little visual things that I love thanks
To defend the evil cod of duty the black ops series has the ballistic knife which was an incredibly fun knife that shot the blade. It worked as a great glass cannon having a max 2 ammo and needing to physically retrieve the blades but kill in one hit. You could argue its less of a melee weapons since the main utility is shooting it but tf2 has stuff like the sandman and the flying guillotine.
Melee Weopon: A short ranged weapon that directly hits a target that is currently close to the weilder. The weopon might emit projectiles but will always be able to hit without them.
My definition of a melee weapon would be: A short to point-blank range weapon that is used by swinging it around. This can include hand accessories that partially, or fully cover the hands. So technically a ghillie or morph suit would count.
okay i was distracted half the video thinking about how you sound like the pacer test voice. not trying to knock you ofc, great video once i rewinded to actually watch it!
I'm glad you talked about only other games for 80% of the video about TF2 melee weapons. It's honestly a breath of fresh air to see those other games even if they don't do the melee gameplay perfectly.
I think one of the best examples of an awesome FPS melee weapon is the Shovel from Shotgun Farmers. In has both combat and utility, in your own terms it's both a wrench and a knife. And it's just fun as hell to whack people with. -it functions like the melee in Halo, two hits from the front will kill someone, provided they don't have armor and a hit from the back will instakill them no matter what -it has the effect of the knife from CS where you run the fastest while brandishing it -it has the added use where if you whack a weapon on the ground or a gun plant with it, it destroys it, so you can use this to starve your enemies of weapon spawns -there's a mutator in the game that gives it a knockback effect, thus it can be used to create space and make melee duels that much more interesting Just one of many examples that prove that Shotgun Farmers is a gaming masterpiece!

A melle weapon is a weapon that doesn't require ammo but also has a short rand and doesn't shoot projectiles

I feel like I just stumbled on gold, holy good god this video is perfectly paced, the jokes are delivered super well, and there's so many little visual things that I love
thanks
To defend the evil cod of duty the black ops series has the ballistic knife which was an incredibly fun knife that shot the blade. It worked as a great glass cannon having a max 2 ammo and needing to physically retrieve the blades but kill in one hit. You could argue its less of a melee weapons since the main utility is shooting it but tf2 has stuff like the sandman and the flying guillotine.

Melee Weopon:
A short ranged weapon that directly hits a target that is currently close to the weilder. The weopon might emit projectiles but will always be able to hit without them.
My definition of a melee weapon would be:
A short to point-blank range weapon that is used by swinging it around.
This can include hand accessories that partially, or fully cover the hands.
So technically a ghillie or morph suit would count.
Just so you know, the “no, not like that” joke made me subscribe instantly.
I don't think I've ever come across another channel that was so informative and yet so occasionally unhinged
I noticed you enjoy the deadbolt soundtrack, good taste.
I don't think I can describe why, but the Mayan Soul-stealer Mask bit was extremely funny
okay i was distracted half the video thinking about how you sound like the pacer test voice. not trying to knock you ofc, great video once i rewinded to actually watch it!

in surpised ow was never mentioned, there are many examples of melee being extremely important, most common being rein and genji
this entire video's script is a run-on sentence and my add loves it, thank you
I'm glad you talked about only other games for 80% of the video about TF2 melee weapons.
-it functions like the melee in Halo, two hits from the front will kill someone, provided they don't have armor and a hit from the back will instakill them no matter what
-it has the effect of the knife from CS where you run the fastest while brandishing it
-it has the added use where if you whack a weapon on the ground or a gun plant with it, it destroys it, so you can use this to starve your enemies of weapon spawns
-there's a mutator in the game that gives it a knockback effect, thus it can be used to create space and make melee duels that much more interesting
Just one of many examples that prove that Shotgun Farmers is a gaming masterpiece!
if a weapon can only deal damage in kissing range. usually whilst facing the opponent. then it’s a melle weapon
Brother! The pacing, the writing, the editing? Bellissimo!
4:30 ah yes, my favorite FPS game, Nintendogs. The melee option of 'pet' was a truly groundbreaking step in melee options. Thank you for including this staple of shooter games, Kaluka! :P
