@@aurelionight I've played it again recently (first time since launch) because they finally fixed the textures for the original mode in the MCC version. Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland is a remake of Kirby's Adventure that is just better in every way, as the spirtes are on par with Super Star, the music sounds better (pretty great for the Gba), and having Meta-Knight as an unlockable is a neat bonus that wasn't in the original from what I remember. As for the games shown, you pretty nailed why I think Perfect Dark on the 360 is the go to version of that game.
Kirby Super Star Ultra is far better, especially since that Meta Knight mode was really lazily done and unenjoyable in comprasion to Meta Knightmare Ultra in KSSU.
Apart from a few presentation gripes, Twin Snakes breaks the challenge of the original MGS by giving you all the abilities you had in MGS2 without rebalancing the rest of the game around your new abilities. Why would you bother with carefully sneaking around guards and avoiding combat when you can just equip the tranq pistol, headshot every guard in the room, and go on your way? I do have to praise some of the quality of life improvements, though, like cutting down on the frankly stupid amount of backtracking the original PS1 version had, starting you out with a full life bar, and making the sniper rifle actually fun to use.
Dragon Warrior I & II on GameBoy. Much better control-wise and requires less grinding to advance than the NES and Famicom versions, and the graphics are better while still being 8-bit.
My favorite remake has to be Resident Evil for the GameCube. So much more polish, atmosphere, and overall improvement to the controls that the north american release didn't get. I'm SUPER hoping that the RE2 remake is still chugging away in production.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition was such a good rerelease of the original DMC3. Released only a year after the original, it added a new character, a new easy mode, and gave us Turbo Mode which ran the game 20% faster. Turbo Mode just feels like the right way to play.
That's not really a remake or remaster though, it's an updated re-release like Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence or Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition. It's the same game on the same platform, just with more content and some quality-of-life changes that makes the original release obsolete.
The digital version of "Sonic The Hedgehog CD" for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is several times more enjoyable than the Sega CD version, especially since it fixes so many of the problems that the original version had as well as the addition of Tails as a playable character after you unlock him.
You should do a "Games that did it before it was popular episode." Talking about how Mega Man Legends was 3D Zelda before 3D Zelda (with Z Targeting). How Winback was a cover based shooter before Gears. And so on.
I never had an issue with the screen crunch in Super Mario Bros Deluxe, at the time, I was thrilled to be playing anything Mario related and this one has much replay-ability; which is a plus in my book.
Am I the only one that has fond memories of Castlevania Adventure on the GB? I was 7 when it came in 89 and I got it for Christmas along with my Gameboy and Super Mario Land. I picked up the Castlevania Collection for the Switch and I have played both Castlevania games and I still enjoy them.
The recent Battle Garegga ps4 remaster might be the best I've seen. Perfect arcade accurate gameplay, tons of in depth graphs and meters to track your scoring progress, and a completely new additional game mode make what could have been a simple arcade port into one of the most feature packed ports out there.
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was actually the very first Mario game I played. I actually finished it the first time a few years ago and never even knew about the smaller screen size, which honestly never really bothered me. It was a great game and I even managed to beat the lost levels too! And that intro theme still runs through my head today.
How about SSFF being way better than HVGN? The amount of work that goes into this is fantastic, I'm really digging how this channel has become so professional and innovative over time.
I didn't mind the earlier format. After the first couple of episodes Derek basically stopped drawing inspiration from James and became his own thing. And that's why I understand the change of the name and channel. Using the HVGN alias was in a way disservice to the hard work you put into your videos.
Excellent point about of bad games not being remade. One game that comes to mind is a Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. Part of me would like to see what was originally intended before the franchise was rebooted.
Mega Man Powered Up on the PSP not only included the original, but it gave everything to shine, full 3D graphics, voice acting, the ability of playing as Roll and the Robot Masters, a level editor, free DLC. The problem was that it was the only Mega Man game on the PSP, everything else was on the GBA and DS. There's also Final Fantasy I-VI for the GBA. All of the five games (I & II were bundled) updated for the best the GBA could offer. I want the same thing with VIII-XIII.
I liked your old show (HVGN), but this new stuff is EXACTLY up my alley. I have similar obsessions with oddities in videogames, and strange ports, unique genre twists...All that stuff. Great new direction!
Every damn video you release makes me realize I have yet to complete my play-through of sweet home for the nes. It's been in my backlog so long you don't even go by that name anymore haha.
NightDive did a bang-up job with Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2. And lemme tell you, being able to play Turok 2 with a good framerate is fucking incredible.
Sonic 1 & 2 for Android and iOS. 60FPS locked, added characters, save system, achievements and Sonic 1 gets an added spindash. Plus, they're free with ad support and the ability to purchase to remove ads (for super cheap). Sega did a good here. Sega did a real good.
I think that the PC port of the First harry potter licensed title (sorcerer's stone on the PSX) is a good contender for most superior simultaneous port
I played the heck outta SMB Deluxe and still didn't realize how much material I didn't unlock! I am also only slightly ashamed to admit despite growing up with an NES and the SMB/DuckHunt dual pack, this was how I finally first beat SMB. Loved that cartridge.
Revisiting this video reminded me of Adventure: Rebirth. It's rad and if I was into the whole content making thing I'd definitely make an hour-long vid on how it encapsulates the best aspects of IGAvania and bundles them in the Classicvania style. Good stuff!
AM2R! Yeah, it's a fan recreation of Metroid 2 but damn, was it done well. IMO, it's the second best Metroid game ever made. If you are a fan of the series, you owe yourself to play it.
+NukeA6 But do you think people should boycott Nintendo for basically taking it down and replacing it with the arguably inferior Samus Returns? (UPDATE. Please just ignore this. It was arrogant)
tim5fl "replacing" Ah yes, because Samus returns was magically made in the span of a few months rather than the average development cycle of at keast 2 years. Boycotting, Nintendo for taking down a game that you can still play just because they also made a game too is really stupid and petty consider they *own the property*
I also gotta give some love to the Mario All-Stars remakes, as well as the Wiimakes of Metroid Prime and RE4 for giving those games perfect controls, and the Wiimake of Klonoa. Though I've also heard great things about Wayforward's remake of A Boy And His Blob, which took a really good concept and gave it execution to match.
Fun fact the goldeneye remaster is online for pc. Video Game Dunkey did a video on it. It's got keyboard and mouse controls and is in 1080p. It's not the official remaster, but it looks good and frame rate is pretty solid.
I was always confused when people said that Castlevania the Adventure Rebirth was a remake of the GB one; I thought it was an original game because it was so different, but I guess you've convinced me...
Can't believe that the DS remake of Kirby Superstar wasn't even mentioned. Phenomenal remake/port with new sprites, MORE games, what more could you want?
Super Mario Bros Deluxe was the fist video game I ever owned and I am so greatful. I spent WELL over the 100 hours you mentioned could be spent. It was my faithful companion during many a road trip!
4:56 If my memories of Call of Duty and Halo on Xbox Live on 360 are anything to go by "Using the N-Bomb in multiplayer" wasn't just restricted to Perfect Dark.
Ooh...now I want to see if my original Perfect Dark file times are anywhere close to yours. Still have my original cart after all these years! I have great memories of playing multiplayer deathmatches with some high school friends at the time. This and Smash bros and WWF Attitude were our jams! I did pick up PD's rerelease, and as you said, it was a massive improvement all around, but I didn't sink nearly anywhere near the same amount of time in.
I've always been interested in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, but I never saw the screen crunch as a huge issue. The extras look so awesome and I can't wait to buy this from the 3DS Virtual Console!!
I already own the GBC cart but if Nintendo released Super Mario Bros DX on eShop and modified the view to match that of the NES originals I'd definitely buy it again.
Shout out to Chrono Trigger DS. It managed all the content from the PS1 version with none of the load times or frame drops. On top of that, there's a lot of extra content that includes new items and weapons, new dungeons, a pokemon style arena, a new map feature, new controls, and a new secret final boss. It takes what's already a damn near perfect game and blows it out the roof.
My favorite remake is Ocarina of Time 3D. It's faithful where it is needed, fixes the few problems of the original, streamlines gameplay thanks to the bottom screen, better graphics, and throws in a mirrored version of Master Quest where enemies do double damage. Did I also mention it's portable?
Bionic Commando: Rearmed!! That one is definitely an interesting remake, of the NES version of Bionic Commando. My only complain about it is the change on Ladd 'Rad' Spencer's design, for giving him the obvious(In the context of the game's gameplay) bionic-arm.
Shadow of the Colossus comes to mind - like Perfect Dark its original console really struggled to do it justice. Daytona USA for XBLA and PSN is a good example too - the classic game in beautiful HD plus extra modes like Survival in which you have to keep reaching checkpoints while your tyres wear away. Thanks for the video!
Obvious mention: the remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver, dubbed Heartgold and Soulsilver, are fucking amazing. I'd list the features but I lost my cartridge years ago and the games now go for a serious sum of cash online; however the most memorable things I can recall were the updated audio and visuals, the updated battling system with the much lauded Physical/Special split, and, most notably, the fact that the first Pokémon in your party would follow you around in the overworld.
It's been ages since I've played Gen I and II Pokemon, but god damn I don't think I'm ever going to when the GBA and DS remakes exist. Seriously, these games absolutely outclass them in pretty much every way, such good games. I'd say ORAS too, but I don't think the gap is quite as big as the other remakes.
Might be because RSE were already fantastic games that hold up much better than the original 2 generations. But yes, I do agree completely, FRLG and HGSS outdid the originals in so many ways that you can tell they poured as much love and attention into them as possible. (Sorry to comment on such an old post!)
Thats a subjective perspective. Many people would still prefer the originals over the remakes. Some people still feel that Emerald is the definitive version of Gen 3 including the remakes.
gen 3 doesn't have battery backups. The battery is only used in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald for the berries, not for save datas. In fact, Fire Red/Leaf Green didn't even had the battery, because in those games you didn't plant berries.
Dragon Quest 1 and 2 on the Super Famicom. They're the games that got me into the series. And I wish they would get more attention and even a re-release.
Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver an Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. HGSS are probably my favorite or second favorite games in the series. They took what many already considered the best games in the series and packed it with even more content and a lot of nostalgia.
One of my favorite remakes that outdoes the original, even though it's a subtle one, in the version of Kingdom Hearts in the I.5 collection. By adding improvements from KH II and refining the controls, it is a definitive replacement for the PS2 original
You mean Final Mix? Those were released in Japan as simple expansions, not really remakes. the collections just remastered the Final Mix versions instead of the original versions
My recent most favorite remake is Brutal Doom with Hell on Earth Starter Pack. I do not know, if it qualifies to Punching weight (it is technically a very advanced mod, not remake), but G, it is so great!
Amazing video, love punching weight! Two remakes (made by fans) that comes to my mind are Castlevania II Simon's quest Revamped and Another Metroid 2 Remake (this one is fantastic). I think talking about fan remakes would make another great episode!
SMB Deluxe is one of the best games I ever played. I 100% that game, and there is a fair amount to do in it. Loved every second, and would love to play it again.
My favorite remake is Metroid: Zero Mission. I never owned an NES so I had a hard time playing the original Metroid. Not only did the remake make it much easier for me to play and enjoy the game, it helped me learn how to play the original, which is conveniently on there as an extra
The 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time is definitely a significant improvement over the original N64 version. I'm still not sure whether to call it a remaster or remake because it uses the original source code and level geometry, but for simplicity, I'll just call it a remake. Some of these points can also apply to Majora's Mask 3D. Grezzo did an amazing job with the new models, textures, and sprites. They kept the charm and overall artstyle of the game while still giving it a fresh coat of paint. The increase in framerate from 20fps to 30fps was also a really nice change. Then there was the quality of life improvements like making the Iron Boots an item instead of equipment so using them was far quicker, gyro controls to make aiming the bow and slingshot much easier, as well as fixing game-breaking bugs without fixing the non-harmful fun glitches. The inclusion of Master Quest was also a really cool bonus. It was also one of few 3DS games to actually make good use of the 3D in my opinion. I think it was a really good call on Nintendo and Grezzo's part to have OOT remade because as legendary of a game as it is, it's aged very poorly. The 3DS remake gave this game a chance to shine much better than it could ever dream to on the N64. Grezzo took that chance and ran with it. OOT 3D is easily a better game than OOT N64.
I personally like Ocarina of Time. I'm one of very people who actually uses the 3D as often as possible, so i like the 3D affects. The thing that makes OOT 3D the best remake ever of all time, it made the iron boots an item! No more pausing every time you needed to equip or unequipped. It made the Water Temple go from insufferable to actually kinda enjoyable, at least for me. I also do enjoy Halo: Master Chief Collection a lot. Halo being my favorite franchise of all time, playing all 4 games, and ODST at 60fps was a real treat, and when the multiplayer work, (for me it worked pretty well, couple months after launch) it was again incredibly enjoyable. Here's to Halo MCC getting a PC port, taking that awesomeness, and turning the dial to 11! Halo 3, at 1440p 165hz! In other words: Heaven.
Majora's Mask for 3DS is a fantastic port, streamlining a lot of frustrations and polishing some mechanics that were a bit clunky in the original, as well as updating the graphics beautifully; FFVI for GBA is a personal favorite of mine, fixing bugs, updating the script for better conveyance, adding more content including a bonus dungeon and optional super boss to beat, little bits of flavor text on equipment, etc., though it did take an unfortunate hit to the audio and palette due to the GBA's hardware limitations.
You could always do this as a spin-off series of good remakes or bad remakes. You could also do a good or bad port version and wether or not they simply did a good or bad port, or if they improved things that were broken or glitches when originally released.
I have an episode suggestion. Pre-DS handheld adventure games. Like point-and-click style but not necessarily P&C in the strictest sense. I think you know what I mean and there are more than you'd think. There was even one on the Lynx! It was called Dracula: The Undead. Game Gear had two to my knowledge, Phantasy Star Adventure and Cosmic Spacehead. GBA had Nancy Drew: Message In A Haunted Mansion and Broken Sword, and GBC had Deja Vu I&II, (that's the title of the release) Shadowgate, The Fish Files, The Addams Family, Scooby Doo - Classic Creep Capers, and maybe Alone In The Dark kind of counts. Maybe there are more but I don't know about them. If anyone does, please let me know. And of course Clock Tower on the Wonderswan, which was already covered. I didn't know about that one until this series so thanks for that. That is such a weird idea. Adventure games on early handhelds. It's fascinating. Some of them work sort of adequately.
Man I loooved Super Mario Bros Deluxe as a kid. After playing the full-sized version and then going back to the GBC port though... you *really* feel how much harder the game is with less time to react (or at least I do, not being terribly great at it to begin with >.>).
I know you guys kind of showed some of it already in this video, but my favorite remake and one of my favorite games of all time is definitely Resident Evil 1 remake, or REmake, for the GameCube. I feel that it took the incredibly cheesy and not super tension-filled original and made it a shade darker, plus the addition of the crimson heads added a lot of tension to exploring the mansion.
Conker live and reloaded was a awesome graphical upgrade. Multiplayer wasn't as good but still fun at the time. The single player in love and reloaded was a great upgrade with better controls and gameplay mechanics
Not super well known, but the PS2 remake of Die Hard Arcade (part of the SEGA Ages 2500 series in Japan) is aces. There's a video about it on my channel, if you want to know more!
Resident Evil remake, Kirby: Super Star Ultra, Final Fantasy 4 for the DS/PSP, Chrono Trigger DS, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, and my all time favorite Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix.
Chrono Trigger wasn't a remake. It was just a re-release with a bit of new content plus the stuff from the PlayStation release. KH2 was also a re-release.
Thanks for checking out the video! It was tough choosing just three for this episode. What are some of your favorite remakes/remasters??
Pokemon Games Always.
Resident Evil Remake set the standard for what makes a remake good. I still don't think it's been topped to this day.
The Resident Evil Remake for Gamecube is in my opinion the Gold Standard for how to do a remake/remaster
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen (obvious picks) and Sonic 1/2/CD for mobile are my favorites for sure

Yeah man, if there is a part two, they need to include Metroid: Zero Mission!
Caz Zero Mission is basically an entirely different game, which isn't what they were going for
But it is a remake the essentially renders the original obsolete.
Zero Mission arguably has more in common with Metroid NES than Adventure: Rebirth has with Castlevania: The Adventure, so I fail to see the point.

Derek did a HVGN video on them. It's how I found out that Japan got a SNES remake of 1, 2 & 3. Which I got a fan-translated copy of.
My favorite remake has to be Resident Evil for the GameCube. So much more polish, atmosphere, and overall improvement to the controls that the north american release didn't get. I'm SUPER hoping that the RE2 remake is still chugging away in production.
This comment has aged like fine wine.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition was such a good rerelease of the original DMC3. Released only a year after the original, it added a new character, a new easy mode, and gave us Turbo Mode which ran the game 20% faster. Turbo Mode just feels like the right way to play.
same with DMC4SE
That's not really a remake or remaster though, it's an updated re-release like Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence or Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition. It's the same game on the same platform, just with more content and some quality-of-life changes that makes the original release obsolete.
Fantasy Zone 2 DX is by far my favorite remake. Especially with the bonus mode on the 3ds 3d version
Great video!!
I need to download that Castlevania on my WiiU soon in case in goes away. It looks great!
I'm playing Perfect Dark for the first time on Rare Replay and not only does it still hold up, its more fun than a lot of FPS games released today
2:35 Ah, Gradius, a game so famous it got its own Yu-Gi-Oh card.
The digital version of "Sonic The Hedgehog CD" for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is several times more enjoyable than the Sega CD version, especially since it fixes so many of the problems that the original version had as well as the addition of Tails as a playable character after you unlock him.
I've heard people use the term 'classicvania' which I really like.
Also great video. You have a really entertaining voice to listen to.
Goldeneye did get a sourcemod fan remake... It's pretty awesome, actually.
My favorite remake, also made by WayForward, would be DuckTales Remastered.
You should do a "Games that did it before it was popular episode." Talking about how Mega Man Legends was 3D Zelda before 3D Zelda (with Z Targeting). How Winback was a cover based shooter before Gears. And so on.
Kudos to you guys. You're the only guys I know about who actually recognized the greatness of Castlevania Rebirth and gave it a recommendation.
Thanks, we're flattered!
Stop Skeletons From Fighting I'll get you a beer sometime 😉
I agree Derek it's amazing to see how much your channel has evolved over the years.
hey i like HVGN.
I didn't mind the earlier format. After the first couple of episodes Derek basically stopped drawing inspiration from James and became his own thing. And that's why I understand the change of the name and channel. Using the HVGN alias was in a way disservice to the hard work you put into your videos.
I can appreciate the love for Double Dragon Neon, but, oh my days, Double Dragon Advance... one of the best games ever made, in my opinion.
I want the same thing with VIII-XIII.
what about Maverick Hunter X?
Maverick hunter x is on psp too
I liked your old show (HVGN), but this new stuff is EXACTLY up my alley.
Man, I hope that the RE2 Remake will be as good as the first Remake.
It was pretty good.
You broke my heart Inafune. You broke my heart.
Not to forget, Castlevania Rebirth has one of the best soundtrack of the series! Every remix are fantastic.
I played the heck outta SMB Deluxe and still didn't realize how much material I didn't unlock! I am also only slightly ashamed to admit despite growing up with an NES and the SMB/DuckHunt dual pack, this was how I finally first beat SMB. Loved that cartridge.
Am I the only one who prefers Perfect Dark's original character models to the new ones?
Yes
It was arrogant)
tim5fl "replacing"
Ah yes, because Samus returns was magically made in the span of a few months rather than the average development cycle of at keast 2 years. Boycotting, Nintendo for taking down a game that you can still play just because they also made a game too is really stupid and petty consider they *own the property*
+AtomicRoboTesla Sorry about that. It's one of several examples of bad commes I posted impulsively.
Remake of Samus Return originally in depth development on 2015 by same team who did CA: Lord of Shadow, there a reason response for an takedown.
If we're going with fan made remakes, Super Mario 63 is definitely worth mentioning.
It's not the official remaster, but it looks good and frame rate is pretty solid.
ive following you since forever. this is the show i get the most hyped for whenever a new ep comes out!
Assault Suit Leynos is really good!
Super Mario Bros Deluxe was the fist video game I ever owned and I am so greatful. I spent WELL over the 100 hours you mentioned could be spent. It was my faithful companion during many a road trip!
M2 is the company who’s making the really awesome SEGA AGES collections now on the switch. They are fantastic remasterings, it’s really impressive.
Tony Hawk Downhill Jam on GBA is a really impressive game. It uses actual polygons for characters and environment.
4:56 If my memories of Call of Duty and Halo on Xbox Live on 360 are anything to go by "Using the N-Bomb in multiplayer" wasn't just restricted to Perfect Dark.
There's something about Adventure ReBirth using that classic Konami sound font that I adore so, so much.
The Romancing SaGa remake for ps2 is hands down my favorite remake, hell one of my favorite games altogether. It deserves more love
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is definitely my favorite remake. Fixed every problem with the original Odin Sphere and made it a much better experience
SMB Deluxe had a DAY PLANNER?! I'm sold!
Just wanted to let you know, this is my favorite segment on your channel.
I'd say the REmake remaster is better than the original. I prefer analog controls over tank controls.
It completely breaks the challenge of the game though... Such a joke. Tank controls aren't hard to figure out, man.
They add artificial difficulty. I've "figured them out" doesn't mean I like them.
While the tank control were manageable, but I never went back to them when Remastered released.
TheMortalkombat2007
Same here. It's just a control setup of a bygone era.
civilwarfare101
What's with you niggas? You can't hold up on the D-Pad? There's something wrong with your thumbs?
The perfect dark remaster is soooooo good. I burnt out on PD back in the N64 days but damn was it fun to revisit
I actually had no idea Double Dragon IV existed when I watched this. Immediately paused the video and bought it. Great decision.
Just got out of the gym to find a new punching weight!!! Today is a great day.
Gen II and III are still playable, but have the annoyances of battery backups.
Ugh.
At least we have ORAS now.
+Davion
it affects day-based events like berries and Return/Frustration
I absolutely loved Dragon Ball Neon. DD II was my childhood's favorite game!
Double Dragon Neon is worth every penny just for the soundtrack alone. But then again, all of WayForward’s games have excellent music 🥰
"Oh yeah - did you know the Game Boy had a CAMERA?!"
I feel so old.
Another killer episode that I’m watching for the second time. Love it!!
Another great video from the absolute best games no channel on all of TH-cam. Keep it up!
I love Guardian Heroes - the remaster is great. Same with Radiant Silvergun.
i ended up buyingthat earth defence force for my gtx 1080 sli, its great
Shadowgate 2014 is a fantastic remake of the original NES game. Definitely check it out if you like oldschool adventure games.
Either any of the Kingdom Hearts Final Mix games for PS3/4 or the MGS saga on PS3. Tons of hours pumped into those games.
Bionic Commando Rearmed is by far my favorite remastered port, making an amazing game even better.
