  • @sonsofblades
    @sonsofblades 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Fun fact: The version of Panzer Dragoon that's on the Orta disk is actually a port of the PC version (evidenced by the 480p rendering resolution, additional view distance, and higher polygon counts)

    • @leeartlee915
      @leeartlee915 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhhh, is that so? If that’s true, that explains why it was done. It would have taken Sega much less effort to port an existing PC version rather than the Saturn edition.

    Namco did something similar with Tekken 5. It includes arcade ports of Tekken 1, 2, and 3. Along with a space shooter called StarBlade. It's pretty crazy. Tekken 5 has a ton of content by itself. They really went above and beyond.

      Isn't Panzer Dragoon just a straight port from the Saturn original? I wouldn't know since I've -never played any game in the series- only played Panzer Dragoon Orta once at a GameStop a very long time ago, but I figured Derek would mention the changes the port made if there were any.

    • @bojak9055
      @bojak9055 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, it's a port of the pc port

    • @MateusAuri
      @MateusAuri 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can actually unlock the full Starblade game (the one in the loading screen) and it appears as an option alongside T1, 2 and 3.
      It's a hidden collectible inside the Devil Within mode. Funnily, this mode by itself can be considered to be another completely different game included in the disc (kind of like the Konquest modes and minigames in most 6th-gen Mortal Kombat games).

    The 32X version of Virtua Fighter really DID count for something. It plays smooth and was a great way to practice for the arcades back then. It was preferred over the first Saturn release and is still impressive for that system.

  • @Manabeast

    Yes, the Ridge Race updated game does in fact run at 60 frames per second. I can see the difference between the two even without a side by side comparison, but with the two games side by side the difference is stunning. Much more smooth and flowing when played. Great video BTW! Love the series.

    • @thesch2867
      @thesch2867 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BadPhilosophy I know but the "adds multiplayer" part sounded weird to me, it's an arcade fighting game, of course it would have multiplayer.
      As far as i know the Yakuza port is nothing more than a barebones emulated port of the Model2 game with a few minor emulation glitches.

      +Stop Skeletons From Fighting Ouchie on the 32x dig... That port was developed and produced by AM2 itself and was overseen by Suzuki. He painstakingly made sure his 1993 masterpiece was given it's proper justice on a system with odd architecture that the team was very unfamiliar with not only being developed in the US but also it being brand new when he worked with it. It's no hidden gem, but I would have to say that port was a damn near technical masterpiece all things considered, and is a faithful representation of one of my all time favorite games. And come on, a mushroom that turned our 1989 released 16 our Megas into a 32bit polygonal powerhouse? Pretty remarkable when given thought and it's proper due diligence.

    • @CannotFindServerSA
      @CannotFindServerSA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      R4 uses a clever system in which both sprites and polygons are applied. The cars themselves are actually sprites, allowing them to appear much smoother than you'd expect from a PS1 game and allowing more horsepower to be used for the environmental stuff. Gran Turismo 1 did this as well.

    Ridge Racer Unbounded is one of the most underrared and fun games of the last generation. If you loved Split/Second (another game I HIGHLY recommend), give it a chance. It was developed by Bugbear, creators of the Flatout series and Wreckfest a.k.a. Next Car Game. It is very competent and stylish!

    Great video, I love a bit of Panzer Dragoon and Ridge Racer. I'd also add to your list of hidden gems the inclusion of the Original Outrun inside the Xbox version of Outrun 2. Looks like you got a bit more content with your Ridge Racer Tubro disc in the US than us in the UK (it was called 'Hi-Spec' instead of Turbo here) I can't remember remember any of those demos on the version I had.

    Great vid, and I'm really liking Punching Weight and its curator-style approach.
    One of my favorite games on the PS2 was Armored Core Nexus, which comes with 2 discs: Evolution and Revolution. The former has the game's new campaign with all its rebalances and new mechanics and parts, while the latter has remastered and updated stages from the PS1 Armored Core games with even more rewards. Some of those were parts you couldn't even get in those games! And anything you did on either disc was saved in a common file, meaning you were always making progress. If you're into Armored Core or mech simulation action games, I totally recommend that.

      +Stop Skeletons From Fighting There's actually a PC port of the first Splatterhouse, and it's also on par with the FM Towns port as a near arcade perfect port from what I've heard on The West Mansion fansite. The great thing about it is that it plays great, even on modern Windows systems despite being released in 2003; I have played it on Windows 8.1 and unlike a few of my other older games where they run badly because of the botched support for older DirectX versions, Splatterhouse plays at full speed without any issues.

    This needs a part 2. There's still many games that weren't covered. The main one that comes to mind is Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles. The main game is a 2.5D Rondo of Blood remake, but you can unlock the original Rondo of Blood and the amazing Symphony of the Night by finding their respective items in the main game. The SOTN port has re-done voice acting and compiles all the extra content from every version of the game, including the extra levels and characters.

    As silly as it may be, Animal Crossing is a great way to get a sampling of early NES games and is, honestly, me and my brother's introduction to "really old video games" (I grew up with 6th Gen consoles and I think the oldest system I had played with at that point was the N64)
    Most of the normally available ones are pretty simple as games (though some are still pretty noteworthy, such as Donkey Kong and Balloon Fight) and can be kinda annoying to come across, but are generally worth it. If you're feeling lazy, you can also obtain the items through password generators (most notably, Punch-Out !! is only available through this method) and a few available through cheating devices if that's your thing (Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda).
    It's way cheaper to buy Animal Crossing than buying all of them on VC. It goes for about $20 online, and all you need to play it is a controller and a Gamecube or Wii, both of which are really easy to get a hold of. It also saves your data, a nice plus over VC and managing suspend/restore points. Plus Animal Crossing is a great game on its own so yeah, definitely would recommend

    Here's an interesting bit of perspective: Panzer Dragoon Orta was released in 2002 and is about 19 years old as of this comment. In the year Quake 1 was released, 1996, the Atari 2600 was also about 19 years old being released in 1977.
    From that perspective I think it's fair to consider the original Xbox retro at this point, and maybe the Atari downright vintage.

    The first time I ever came across something like this in a game was with Metroid Zero Mission. ZM is an incredible reimagining of the original Metroid, and it was also my first Metroid game. When you beat the game, you actually unlock the original as a bonus. Given that the oldest console I've played at that point was the Genesis, I've never seen anything that archaic before. It was really interesting.

      Same here, to this day it is my favourite game of all time. I actually wanted to learn programming just to make my own mod. Did not learn how to program, so i had to settle for playing it on a PC emulator. Looks great on 4k. Highly recommended.

    I'm so glad I picked up a Saturn and Panzer Dragoon Saga back in like 2003 or so. I got both for under $100 as well as a 3D controller, Nights, and Christmas Nights. I managed to avoid the ridiculous launch price of the Saturn on one end of it's history and the even more absurd thousand dollar prices of Saga on this end of it's history.

    I wish more games did this. I mean a lot will put in ports or emulations of older games as a bonus, but I mean I'd like to see this turn into a more common practice, especially when the ports are ports of older games that are harder to come by.

    hey Derick, for the next Punching Weight, why not look at games that were conventional in genre but unconventional in controls, two that come to mind are Microphone based.
    Odama, a Pinball game on the GameCube thats set in fudal japan where you use a voice mic to command a small army to move a bell to the designated spot while you do the pinball stuff.
    LifeLine, a survival horror game on the PS2 where you are trapped on a hotel in space thats being infested with aliens, you speak through the mic to communicate with Rio a waitress who needs you to tell her where to go and what to do to save you both, the game recognizes 500 verbal commands in both exploration and combat.
    both these games are rough around the edges since this was still new tech at the time and even today machines have trouble understanding voice commands, but I think ambitious ideas' like these deserved to be admired for what they tried to do :3

    I will pick up Panzer Dragoon Orta since I never owned or even played that much of the Saturn. Since I didn't grow up with the Saturn I don't care to get one, especially when the games are too overpriced that I have no connection with from my youth.

    Funny you mention Virtua Fighter 4, because Virtua Fighter 5 is included inside judgment on PS4. And the game (VF5) hasn't been released on newer consoles (PS4/Xbox)... and MK Trilogy (N64) had space invaders, but you could only access it when you finished the game and only 1 stage, but from what i remember that version was insanely good, i don't know if more space invaders of that quality came out around that time or not.

    3 other games I can think of off the top of my head that has these features are Splatterhouse 2010 where you can unlock all 3 of the classic games which is awesome :D Shenmue 1/2 where you can go to an arcade in game and play some classic sega arcade games and then in Sonic Generations you can unlock a Sega Mega Drive and play the original Sonic the hedgehog in game

    I immediately thought of Winback, originally for the N64 but ported to PS2. It was totally worth it to upgrade it from 64-bit! Also, maybe the Space Channel 5 Part 2, which included the original game. Damn great game.

    For me personally, the best originals packed into a game is definitely with Tekken 5..You get Tekken 1-3 (arcade versions) and even the ability to play tye full version of StarBlade.
    All looks incredibly good too, especially in progressive scan with component video cables.

    • @That_Handle
      @That_Handle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      videogameobsession ,
      Agreed and, speaking for NTSC-U release of Tekken 5 :
      I believe the port of StarBlade here for PS2 also adds rumble function to the DualShock2 ( an approximation I suppose of the rumble seat of the original arcade cabinet ) I'm not so sure about the PS1 dedicated port which also currently sells for a high price.
      A note on resolution: though Tekken 5 is documented having 480p resolution, the PS1 ports therein are listed at 240p which may not be supported by most recent flatscreens.

    - Castlevania X Chronicles (PSP) contains the original and remade Rondo of Blood as well as Symphony of the Night
    - Splatterhouse (360/PS3) has Splatterhouse 1-3 as unlockables - found this out on an old HVGN episode ;)

    Great episode, I loved that Panzer Dragoon got a shout out but I feel that the Ridge Racer and Virtua Fighter 4 were kind of a cop out. They miss features of the original and aren't 1:1. I feel that Dracula X Chronicles with its inclusion of the original Dracula X, and Symphony of the Night would have been a good showcase. Tekken 5 would also fit the bill nicely with its inclusion of perfect arcade ports of Tekkens 1-3 which is pretty impressive and intriguing. :) But still, keep up the good work. :)

    Outside of the already mentioned Tekken 5 and Dracula Chronicles X (although there's 3 extra games in it I believe, not just 2), there's also MGS3 which had the MSX versions of the 2 Meal Gear games. And I know Yakuza tends to do this sometimes. Megaman X collection for the PS2/GC/XB also contained Rockman Battle and Chase, and is the only time the game was given an official US release.
    While not exactly a port, Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense allowed you the ability to play the stages from the first game if you put that disk in at some point while playing the second game.

    The Turbo Mode on Ridge Racer is most definitely 60fps. But it only runs properly on a PS1 or PS2. I tried playing it on a PS3 once and not only was the frame rate capped but there was glitching across the bottom of the screen.

    Never been too crazy about the Ridge Racer games as I've played a decent amount of them, but only beat the DS version for some reason, though Unbounded is a really fun racer that got overlooked alongside Blur, and Split Second. Though I actually bought Orta to play the original Panzer Dragoon as I didn't have a Saturn at the time, and that game reminded of Star Fox at the time, so 5 bucks well spent.

    Believe it or not, I have never heard of "Panzer Dragon". I did hear about "Ridge Racer" from a joke in Noah "Spoony" Antwiler's riff of the infamous "Game Crazy" training video, and "Virtua Fighter"...I do remember that one. But "Panzer Dragon" sounds almost new to me, and that's a shame, because I'm a Playstation guy, and I didn't own a "Sega Saturn".
