In that game it is essentially a side character NPC that you can occasionally run into and forget ever was a person

13:15 This is also kind of sad, considering that the DS got a full-fledged true 3D dungeon crawler in the form of "Fighting Fantasy." It runs SHOCKINGLY well. It stays at a steady 30FPS, despite having complicated polygonal geometry - no raycasting. If you've never seen it, it might be a good one to cover on Punching Weight someday. (And it's actually a pretty good game, too, although the difficulty is way too high. Then again, that does go with the Fighting Fantasy brand.)

I've played them ALL! Seeing that for years a "dumbphone" was all I had, back when first iPhones were already a thing. Come to think of that, there were many little Java gems I've put hours into - I remember one game which was basically a clone of puyo puyo, came pre-installed on my phone. I've caught a pneumonia due to my own stupidity (T-shirt of your favourite band plus leather jacket on top looks good, but isn't practical when there's like -10 C degrees outside and you are going for a bar crawl with friends) and ended up in a hospital for about a week with high fever. I've started to play it out of boredom and I was so hooked that my phone has ended up being plugged into the charger at all times, because I've spent HOURS a day playing this. BTW. Wolfenstein RPG was retconned as Doom prequel and Blazkowicz was Doom guy ancestor, lol! Yes, the turn-based gameplay has worked great. I wish that these games would get a re-release, even though they are a relic, they are an incredibly cool relic and deserve preservation.
I played through doom rpg on a sony ericsson w300i back in 2009 and I remember finding a debug menu that let me change a lot of of the game's variables, and turns out that the tile to tile movement is the game moving through the map in real time, but super fast, and while fiddling with one of the variables I'd made each turn and move feel like a fps proper. it even ran smoothly on that phone's 160x120 screen!

Orcs & Elves I did play on the DS back in the day and actually enjoyed it. I'm not a big RPG fan. But I love id Software and John is one of my favorite game developers. So I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised.
I remember working for EA when they were porting the Wolf RPG game to cell phones and doing QA testing for it. after it was released I bought it for my phone :D
The most egregious example of preserved 1337 speak is that kid in Tony Hawk's Underground right as you're about to leave New Jersey and he calls you a noob and says he's gonna pwn you or whatever. It's amazing.
I actually have both of these on my PSP with a java emulator. They're clunky, but charming in an odd sort of way. Kinda wish they had gotten an official port like Orcs and Elves did.
My Nokia phone had a more limited version of Doom RPG and there were a NPC that joked about being a different guy than the other one despite being only a color palette swap due to space limitations.
I've been trying to dev out a spiritual sequel of sorts to Doom RPG. It's on the back burner for now, as the prototype wasn't as fun as I wanted. It's a mix of RPG and DoomRL. I'm thinking about moving to an action point system (Fallout 1/2). Like I said, back burner for now. I started this process because I love DoomRPG, and the lack of it is palpable.
I specifically bought Orcs & Elves for the DS because I heard the story about this series somewhere before and found it interesting. I have a lot of nostalgia for old Java phone games, and even though I did not play any of these on a phone back in the day, the DS port still gives me a kick of that nostalgia.
Thank god Gunther got some love, I remember I liked him so much that I actually made a “create a wrestler” of him in one of the smackdown vs raw games, forgot how surprisingly good these games were

glad you mentioned orcs and elves it's one of those games me and my best friend were into in high school and always went for $1 at gamestop near the end of the DS's life but it's pretty fantastic I played through it a little over a year ago I got so used to the movement controls I was moving so fast it was almost like walking speed lol

I played the shit out of DOOM RPG in class in college. We are spoiled today, because at that point in time, my mind was blown that we could play games of that quality on a mobile phone.
It'd be neat to see you cover Renegade Kid, a developer I really liked when I was young. They were only around for 10 years, but they made some impressive bangers on the original DS, and both founding members, Jools Watsham and Gregg Hargrove, were always quite easy to contact.
I really enjoyed Doom 2 RPG, I got an IPod Touch for Christmas when I was a teenager, I randomly stumbled across it in the App Store. I got so many hours of enjoyment out of that game.

Omg, I literally just finished playing doom rpg with j2me. Both doom rpgs, wolf rpg, and O&E play flawlessly and they're legit really great rpgs and especially amazing for their time period and running on old flip phones. Looking forward to playing through the rest of them!

Wow, I remember I actually had Doom II RPG! I bought it when I was like 10 and didn't really know what an RPG was, so I was just expecting regular Doom II. I was pretty baffled when I actually started playing it, and I think I only really played it once.

Orcs & Elves was such a good dungeon crawler on the DS. Still have my copy. Honestly think it deserved more credit for that. It's a deeply under-served take on the RPG. There's just so long & far between solid entries despite being such a storied sub-genera.
Before watching the video, I just wanna share that I played Doom RPG on my flip phone back in ‘07. It was REALLY good! The story, gameplay, combat, everything.
I played Orcs & Elves on my Nokia 5300 Xpress Music and later I downloaded the DS Rom for my little brother for his R4 cart...now, years later we both own a real copy and having a blast playing it again.
Easily my favorite creators on the platform, the work you and Grace do to preserve bits of game history that get swept under the rug, mixed with your infectious enthusiasm, makes for such wonderful content. Thanks for always brightening my TH-cam feed, and in turn, my day!

I really enjoyed this game in the day. I remember this came inside an old Sony Ericsson that I had and just for that i thought it was the best cellphone ever.
Orcs & Elves 1 was amazing on DS. Genuinely adored it and spawned my love of DRPGs. The generic fantasy didn't bother me much since Gauntlet Dark Legacy is one of my favorite games of all time
Too bad the project was shelved thanks to Bethesda. Would have loved to see a DoomRL 2, Final DoomRL or modding support. Remember enjoying the devs other RLs based on Berserk and Aliens. Haven't played his spiritual sequel to Doom RL, Jupiter Hell but it looks pretty good.

glad you mentioned orcs and elves it's one of those games me and my best friend were into in high school and always went for $1 at gamestop near the end of the DS's life but it's pretty fantastic I played through it a little over a year ago I got so used to the movement controls I was moving so fast it was almost like walking speed lol
There was a port of doom rpg 1 to windows. Just took some setup. It was unofficial though. But fully playable.
True story. I nearly failed a collage math course because of Doom RPG. I was obsessed with that game at the time and played it HOURS A DAY on my Motorola Razer!

I played the shit out of DOOM RPG in class in college. We are spoiled today, because at that point in time, my mind was blown that we could play games of that quality on a mobile phone.
It'd be neat to see you cover Renegade Kid, a developer I really liked when I was young. They were only around for 10 years, but they made some impressive bangers on the original DS, and both founding members, Jools Watsham and Gregg Hargrove, were always quite easy to contact.
DOOM RPG 1 & 2 are the sole reason I ended up spending up to an hour in office's toilet almost everyday. Almost got fired because of it

I really enjoyed Doom 2 RPG, I got an IPod Touch for Christmas when I was a teenager, I randomly stumbled across it in the App Store. I got so many hours of enjoyment out of that game.
Doom and Wolfenstein in RPG form? You’re speaking my language! ;) I’m not really big on phone/mobile games, even less so when these games came out, so I hadn’t heard of them before. I’ll have to look into how I can play these games myself. Here’s to hoping for an official re-release somewhere down the road! Thank you for once again opening my eyes to another obscure corner of gaming history! :)
Omg, I literally just finished playing doom rpg with j2me. Both doom rpgs, wolf rpg, and O&E play flawlessly and they're legit really great rpgs and especially amazing for their time period and running on old flip phones. Looking forward to playing through the rest of them!
I remember playing Doom RPG on my dad's old Motorola and living it. If the code and stuff could some day be recovered and ported to modern systems I'd lose my mind

Just wanted to say that this is the first time someone successfully sold me on a sponsored ad, hahaha. There was really no other thing more fitting for me to use the coupon on other than on a complete copy of Splatterhouse on the PC Engine, which was pretty much the only version of the first game I still didn't own lol. I'm so jealous of how much better their manual was than what we got in the US; love me them cheesy/amazing full color art that they had (that even illustrates the story explained in the US manual).

Wow, I remember I actually had Doom II RPG! I bought it when I was like 10 and didn't really know what an RPG was, so I was just expecting regular Doom II. I was pretty baffled when I actually started playing it, and I think I only really played it once.

Honestly think it deserved more credit for that. It's a deeply under-served take on the RPG. There's just so long & far between solid entries despite being such a storied sub-genera.

Before watching the video, I just wanna share that I played Doom RPG on my flip phone back in ‘07. It was REALLY good! The story, gameplay, combat, everything.
I played Orcs & Elves on my Nokia 5300 Xpress Music and later I downloaded the DS Rom for my little brother for his R4 cart...now, years later we both own a real copy and having a blast playing it again.
I think the death saturn was in a museum somewhere and was made as a joke

I really enjoyed this game in the day. I remember this came inside an old Sony Ericsson that I had and just for that i thought it was the best cellphone ever.
Orcs & Elves 1 was amazing on DS. Genuinely adored it and spawned my love of DRPGs.
The generic fantasy didn't bother me much since Gauntlet Dark Legacy is one of my favorite games of all time
I had these on my old Motorola V3 Razr, back in like 2007. I loved playing them. Glad to see them get such praise.
Special shoutout to DoomRL, an extremely unique twist on the traditional roguelike that was made yeeeears before the modern roguelite boom occurred.
Too bad the project was shelved thanks to Bethesda. Would have loved to see a DoomRL 2, Final DoomRL or modding support. Remember enjoying the devs other RLs based on Berserk and Aliens. Haven't played his spiritual sequel to Doom RL, Jupiter Hell but it looks pretty good.
