Thanks for posting! As much as I love modelling I sometimes hate the sky-high prices of some of the paints, materiels, etc. that I like to use. ANY video that helps me and my fellow modelers save money is a much appreciated. :)

Before these manufacturers bottled pigments, we used this technique, about 40 years ago !!!
David, excellent video! Expect a tense call from Mig !!

orbitalair Yep, been using pastels for MANY years (what's old is new again - lol). I find the colour of pigments to be a bit denser but pastels still give excellent results.

Dear Sir, just one question, can you use hard pastels (stick shaped ones), to make pin washes and general washes on acrylic water based paints like the ones from AMMO and AK-Interactive or must be used only on enamels?. Can be the water replaced with odourless thinner for the mix?. Best regards!

    • @DisgruntledPigumon
      @DisgruntledPigumon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@pucarasetenta4361 Absolutely, just try different mixtures until you find what works for you.

This is a good idea and was first used years ago before pigments became common. There's a big "However" however. Pastel sticks have a binder - when you grind them the binder stays with the pigments. This can sometimes help because the pigments will often cling with little or no fixer. (Micro Mark sells a set of Doc O'Brien's pigments that have a binder.) But if you want to make complex pigment effects I'd recommend unadulterated pigments - they're simply different. They'll require some kind of fixer (which actually helps: usually mineral spirits or ISP) and have a richer color. Plasmo is sure right about one thing. You don't need a zillion colors - if you have white, black, ocher, burnt umber and sienna you're fixed up for any earth pigment. (Pastels can help if you want to use pigments to fade model surfaces like blue or green on aircraft - there you want them to stick without fixer.) The cheapest and best pigments are found at art store. If you check Blick or any other art store you'll find pigments from the best oil paint companies on earth made for those painters who still like to make their own paints. Bottles are much larger than from model companies. Mine are from the fine US maker Gamblin, and the ritzy French company Sennelier. Either are about one quarter the cost of MIG, AK, Flory etc etc. So I've spent about $40 and have top notch pigments that will last forever. Plasmo's idea is good, but especially if you get serious with armor, use the real stuff - it's better for most things.

Eric Bergerud i can easily get acetone or turpentine based thinners, do you have an idea will those work aswell ?
As for for the pigments, i reckon those will be relatively easy to locate .
I have made pigments using ..erhm.. pumpkin seeds and pine flowers
Finer mix is literally airborn and i cant even see it, and larger ones i can use with PvA to Create forest stuff, and unrefined works perfectly for leaves in 1:72/ 1/56 scale and flowers in 1/35
(Unpainted is like autumn leaves, painted are up to scale with few European tree leaves)

I have been using pastels for almost 20 years. Long before pigments were sold in little jars. I really like the way you scraped the pigments into jars though. I have always done it making colors as I go rather than scrape up the entire pigment stick. This was a good tutorial. Jay

PROish TIP: A fun extra touch you can do when you create custom colors is you can spray your bottle caps the same color to match. It looks great on your shelf and makes identifying much easier.

I don't know why, but for some reason it never occurred to me to mix ground pigments until you said it; when I first got back into model building/painting I went and did this as well, figuring it would work out and I was not disappointed. As far as the soft pastels, if I'm not mistaken they actually have an oil base which is why they adhere to the surface in a higher concentration.

Great job David! Thanks for making this video, me and my friend have been looking at all these pigments and other stuff and saying, Thats just hard pastels! Its a bit more convenient, yes. And all the custom colors out there, however, if your tight on money, or have the time to mix your own stuff, which gives you control of the mixture.

Some hobbys are really inexpensive and some are not like this one...but if you are gonna get it done and don't have the cash you will still find a creative and much cheaper way to buck the system👍. Looking through YT really helps and then again most houses have boxes in the basement filled with everything you need, just dont burn the house down by mixing crazy chems.Thank you kind of part of the hobby how it was a piece of trash but turned out so cool lookin. Plus I'm there(BROKE) my last day at work was mid Sept when I got a surprise, not a good one Dr. said I have a brain lymphoma, that's cancer the size of a golfball🙁and its been no fun and it's just begun, but I twiddle some wood sticks and paint a foam rock wall every day😊😉🤷so if there's a will there's a way!

Hi I just found your channel and I love your video on pigments and using art supplies. I do model railroads and I'm looking to take the Shine off of plastic models and Edson weathering. If you have any tips I'd appreciate it by the way I believe in the saving money also but do appreciate the work that big manufacturers have put into their products for quality. Personally I use $0.05 construction paper in Black for all of my road work instead of spending big bucks on pre-made stuff

    Hi,
At first I love your chanel.
I found that you can buy artistic pigments, in art shops, in really good price. For 70g I paid about 8pln ~1.8EUR. They are really good, in many colors.
You can add some white spirit to them and then they will looks like mud.
Moreover there is no binders, just pigment.
