I’m such a fan of this book and Nat Cassidy in general. I got Rosemary baby and The Shining vibes reading this. Terrific story!!

This is the first negative review I have seen for this book. It's nice to get another perspective on the story. I plan on reading this one in May (for Mother's Day 😂) although it might kill me to wait that long! 😉

Three stars from me too. I actually thought it was going to be a 4-star read for quite some time. I didn't really like the characters, they didn't make me feel much of anything, but I loved the setting and the creepy vibes of the house. But the ending really dragged it down, it was too much on too few pages.
This is a spoiler so anyone who reads this beware -
I know that Ana (not Anna ;) :D ) had her depression and issues towards her daughter, but would someone really be willing to give her kid up that easily to a bunch of monsters? "Okay, you're one of them now and seem happy, go on and live your best monster life!"
And then she could get away with telling everyone around her that she and her mother reconciled and that the kid lived with her now. It was just a lot.

I completely agree. When Ana gives up her baby without a fight it just confirmed to me that she never wanted the child to begin with and Reid was right all along. She legit got what she wanted from the beginning with zero consequences for being an awful mother.

@@violetprynne Yes! To see more of a conflict in her would have been really interesting.

I'm halfway through this and so far I'm predicting it'll be five stars for me! Reid's not a total turd yet, though I think that's coming, and Ana, though she's imperfect, I still kind of understand. Rosemary's Baby is my all time favorite so I'm completely intrigued by the atmosphere, the building as a character, and the other people living/working there! I have high hopes that I'll like this more than I did Mary. Thanks for your review!

The atmosphere in this book it top notch. The entire setting felt like its own character and I loved that.

I was too stressed out to even think about how I felt about the characters. I honestly think they are just human. In all their selfish, but trying to hold it together, glory. The writing REALLY captured the feeling of suffocating, anxious, depression. I didn’t really feel particularly negative about them until it got to the landlords arch. I was like, damn they do kinda suck huh. But at the same time, depression is hard as fuck and I don’t think I’d do much better if I was in their situation.
I don’t want to spoil it but if you remember the line “it’s always bad people Ried.” Then it kinda does reveal that they could also be the “bad people”. After seeing the one person with Charlie shows that they would strongly disapprove of Ana’s parenting, they just never say it bluntly.
    Or maybe I’m just stretching.
I liked the book a lot. I think the way we start to root for the other side was totally intentional. Because we (the readers) are human and easily manipulated.

I couldn’t get into this book… I tried since the premise was so interesting. I stopped about half way

It was definitely difficult for me to get through. If someone hadn't told me the second half was a bit stronger I probably would have DNF'ed it.

😆 I thought I really liked this book. but after hearing you talk about it. 🤔 it made me think a little bit more on it and I have realized that I really hated these characters as well.
I did think Anna was a little ridiculous. At some point I mean, come on could she not wheel her self over to the Home Depot and shut the hell up? Yep I think it is deserving of a three star.

I kept thinking that! Or like order Home Depot home delivery! Haha I'm so glad someone else thought that way, too.
