I have realized this author isn't for me. I read Night of the Mannequins, and thank goodness that was a quick read, because my main impression from that one was "well, that was stupid and predictable". Then I tried The Ones That Got Away, and that was a DNF, and then The Only Good Indians, which was another DNF. I just don't connect with his writing style at all, I find it to be too wordy and just unnecessarily complicated, I don't feel any flow in his stories. But I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this one!

Hey Violet. I somehow came across your channel (think I was looking for some reviews on Stephen Graham Jones's book) and I really vibed with your thoughts (I don't read a lot (yet!) though, lol). Whatever, what I just wanted to let you know are my thoughts concerning reading this book as a non native English speaker: I wanna become an educator (gonna start my profession soon) and at the same time I would like to improve and my perfect my English so that I can easily read books in their original language (since many books are written in English). Now that I've seen this review of yours I thought: Hey, maybe this would be great as a beginning since it's written from the perspective of an 8-year-old girl; so first the language must be not too difficult, and second I could gain insight into a child's mind which could teach me a few things maybe concerning my education becoming an educator. And at the same time it's horrifying and bleak as you say. I'm definitely gonna remember this book and try to get it ;). Lovely greetings from Berlin, Germany :)

This box is what led me to finally cancel my subscription. They've had some really great boxes, but I couldn't justify paying what I was (AUD) to receive products that feel like they came from temu.

I enjoyed his writing style so much I got his latest book on my Kindle also . It's called Down Into The Sea

Horror Movie was such a disappointment for me, too.

I didn’t really like my heart is a chainsaw but I figured if he landed the ending of the trilogy I’d give books 2 and 3 a shot, guess I don’t need to do that

I re-read the first 2 in preparation for getting to the third, and I LOVE the series...but I agree with everything you said here. There were characters here that I thought died in the 2nd book. We didn't get Leetha until around page 300 (which is where the book finally felt like it began for me). It was so odd that I thought SHE was going to end up being the slasher. I saw him speak last week and he said that he had a deadline for this book that he was putting off....but got a 6 week extension, so he wrote teenage slasher instead. He also said he struggled with this because he knew that if anything happened to Jade, that her fans would be very upset, but at the same time "it is a horror book".

I appreciated this review so much. I HATED this book so much and was so disappointed in this 3rd book in the series. The editor should've told SGJ that it was poor writing, handed it back and then asked the publisher for a one year extension. It was ramble writing. It was as if SGJ was thinking out loud but getting distracted while he was typing. I simply don't understand the reviewers that thought it was great. Side note, I think Jade and the little girl are dead. I've been told I'm wrong but I stand by my opinion. I gave it 1 star.

The first one was enough for me. Just read "The Whispering Dead", per your recommendation. Great cosy and very enjoyable.

Thank you for this review. I love how honest you are - it is truly refreshing. I felt like this with My Heart Is a Chainsaw actually - I HATED the essays with the slasher history - I thought it was a cop out on SGJ part (I believe in show and not tell, I guess) and the back and forth between these essays and Jade's angst took me out of the story, BUT I really like SGJ as a person - lol. I couldn't continue with the trilogy, but I did buy a signed copy of I Was A Teenage Slasher. Fingers crossed!

Well my box says it shipped a week ago, but the tracking site keeps saying they’re still waiting to receive my package. Personally I love hiking and camping, it helps me unplug with nature, but that backpack and gardening set look like garbage. After august I’m switching to book only or canceling as I haven’t been impressed for months.

I hated Daphne and loved this. The horror scenes were just so vivid and the metaphor was so well done.

I was so pissed that that "garden set" that we waited so long for was that absolute useless garbage.

So weird. The part in the script describing the silence. Where the camera sort of waits for something to happen.. then goes into the minds and lives of the audience…us. I thought was really great. This is my first Trembley novel so maybe I haven’t been saturated with his themes yet. Loved the book

I am almost 3/4 into this and I don’t like it very much! I agree about the fighting part, I think Louise was not likable and Mark was more likable at this point. But they both are childish and can’t seem to get over the past. I mean there is a lot on the past but some things they ended up arguing and being upset over small crap that was stupid at this point in their life. But this isn’t a scary book at all and I am getting bored. I may have to put this as DNF.. but at same time I am wanting to know how they get the house up and sold. But there is a lot of pages to go. So I may not finish if this still is dragging on like it is. Now.

I'm sharing your feelings with this box, I would be so annoyed if I payed for that box, so much useless crap.

I agree with you about the book. I get the book only and have received two shipments so far and have been disappointed with both books. The first book was paranormal and besides that the binding was completely out of the cover. I have received the book you just received and I did read it but like you this is not my kind of book. I love horror but not this fantasy and paranormal stuff. I have been disappointed with both shipments of books. If the selections don't get better I don't know that I will stay with Twisted Retreat. The books alone run 32.99 and I haven't enjoyed what they are sending.

Those gardening tools! What even was that, it looks like something for kids, which horror loving adult would be happy with them? Someone with a teeny tiny garden, maybe... This felt like a box of sadness. I'm sure the book is great for the fantasy-audience, but what is it doing in a horror box? Very strange.

I'm down to the "book only" box, as I got tired of all the stuff.

These subscription boxes are a con, a lot of them used to be a way to collect things made by independent artists/makers to send out as a way of helping with getting their name out there and now it seems to just be people buying bulk off Ali express. That’s why the candle was ‘out of stock’ because they couldn’t just buy one individually for you to send out. Not impressed by these companies ripping people off.

Highly recommend the audiobook version of Incidents around the House. The narrator does a great job, and I think it gets around the weird formatting of the text. Great book. Could nitpick some aspects of the ending, but it was amazing.

I, too loved Incidents in the Dark. I can't wait for your review of Indian Lake. I was so incredibly disappointed with that book. One star. It was one of the most disjointed, ramble writing books I've ever read. I read sections over and over asking myself "what just happened". I think he was under contract. He wrote and wanted to focus on I Was a Teenage Slasher but was forced by publishers to get the 3rd Indian Lake book out when they should've allowed him to wait a full year and take his time.

I'm 90 pages into Incidents around the house, and I'm really enjoying it. Such a clever look into a marriage and family dynamics, and with that looming, eerie presence. Can't wait to find out where the story will take me! I've started Day of the Door twice now, but I have put it down both times. There is just something about it that doesn't flow, in lack of a better word. I think I will give it another chance one day, I do believe there is a good story in there, but I need to be in the right mood. I felt the same way about Silent Key, I started that one two but gave it up. Not bad, but reading it takes some kind of energy I don't have right now.
