  • Today we talk about high content wolfdogs and the complexities that come with their ownership. Kuna is always happy to teach you about wolfdogs as long as she gets some pets (but not too many)! Meet the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary's founder, Georgina, who details her experience raising a high content wolfdog puppy, and take a deep dive into some of the behaviours we see exhibited in high content wolfdogs.

    I had 2. Sonja and Brutus. Sister and brother. They are standoffish if they didn't know you. They became very attached to my wife and myself. Quite large. The male, Brutus was larger than my male Malamute, Atilla. They always pushed the edge of the envelope!😂 Brutus left me at 10 years old from a liver disease. Sonja left at 19 from being very old. Rest in peace kids. I'll see you soon.❤️

    well done video. it brought back a lot of old memories of mine, Wolfer. when she wanted attention you couldn't push her away, but 5 minutes later she would get up and walk away when she had her fill of attention. when strangers came over, she was on the opposite side of the room/yard, or hiding behind my legs. when she was young and clearly a beta, she would greet other dogs (of all sizes) by laying down, crawling up to them then rolling over to piss on herself. as she became older, she promoted herself to the alpha female of our little pack, she was friendly around other male dogs, but if a female came around, she would charge it, knock it over and pin it to the ground until it would give the proper passive response and respect she thought she deserved, and then all was fine. she has been gone since the early 90s, but i still have her picture next to my desk and i say hi to her every day.

    I have had the great privilege to have had 5 wolf dogs living with me in my home. They were amazing animals. I lost Mollie in July 2022. I miss her so very much. She was my best friend. They are very special animals, each one had peculiar traits that regular dogs just did not have. I find that I am still grief-stricken over each one of them. I had Mollie the longest. She was 14. She even slept in my bed with me. I had her spoiled.

    Thanks for pointing out the difference in eye color....I don't know how many people have a dog with blue eyes and claim some exaggerated percentage of Wolf Content. Such people only show ignorance of their own animal.
    No Wolf has Blue eyes..ever....as she said, it is a domestic Dog trait and most likely the animal has no Wolf content at all.
    And kudos to Georgina for expaining how it takes a life change to own a High Content Wolfdog.
    I own a High Content Wolfdog and your explanations of their behaviors are spot on...
    May not be affectionate, can get aggressive during winter, are very independent....basically Not a Dog even though people see them as a dog. Not that that's a bad thing it is just important to recognize they are a different animal, just like a Fox or Coyote is a different animal and owning such an animal is a choice one must educate themselves about first.

    Very similar to the challenges, self sacrifices and essential knowledge required to successfully raise a high content to pure wild born Australian dingo. You will never own a dingo and a dingo will never allow itself to be your domesticated pet, a dingo will be your lifetime companion and allow very few others to engage with it.
    To raise and be accepted as a Dingoes caretaker and companion you have to first accept you can take the dingo out of the wild, but you can never take the wild out of the dingo.

    I had a high content wolf/dog. However she didn’t get the fluffy coat. She had yellow eyes weighed about 90lbs and had a timber wolf father. I believe she also had Sheppard/chow . I used to play tag with her and she would snag your leg with her paw like she was hunting. She was the most girly girly dog I ever had. She past quite a few yrs ago from bone cancer which big dogs get. It was so sad. She never acted bad. It all depends on how you treat them and train them. She was tall and could spring up into the air from still a look a grown person in the eye. I had a female malamute that was also wolfy and was ver6 hard to train but also a real girly girly.

    Hey! I've been reading and watching about the character of wolf dogs and I keep finding contradictory information regarding their ability to protect their owner or their home. So, I was wondering, do high content wolf dogs protect instead of retreating if need be? And do they consider their owner a part of the pack?

    • @YamnuskaWolfdogSanctuary
      @YamnuskaWolfdogSanctuary  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      High content wolfdogs have a natural flight response, and prefer to run away when something threatens them. Due to this, they do not make good guard dogs and they will run away when afraid. Because of their high amount of wolf content, it is almost impossible to train a high content wolfdog to be a working dog because they do not have the same affinity as dogs do to please humans.
      We can't say for certain whether they view humans as pack members, but with proper socialization and patience, a bond with a wolfdog can be extremely rewarding. That being said, it comes with a lot of sacrifice and a high content wolfdog will almost always value their independence and autonomy. I hope that answers your question!

    Would it be possible to breed a dog to look like a wolf without haveing wolf in them?

      @jessicagislason4855 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ...that's literally the modern dog but yes, blue bay shepherds, tamaskan wolf dogs and clvak wolfdogs are all purebred dogs bred to look like wolves with recent wolf ancestry that aren't actually wolves.

    We had a Samoyed that we now believe had some wolf content. Beautiful and so smart and Alpha male. The wolf took over and the older he got the more he became independent, bit people, uncontrollable, and was by court order confined in a pen for 5 years as he had to be walked with a muzzle and he just existed until we had to put him down. I was a kid and a 14 year old putting his dog down still turns my stomach remembering the vet giving him two injections one to make him drowsy and confused and the other that stopped his heart. So ya get a wolf dog. It can be hard to tell he looked pure Sam. Kelly the poor Sam-wolf.

      Very sorry about your dog.. He most likely wasn't a wolfdog though. Wolfdogs aren't aggressive like that. :/

      I don't understand why people want chihuahuas.
      Different strokes for different folks 🤷‍♀️ we just found out our adopted husky has 40% wolf DNA so low content. I love her personality. She's independent and loyal. She tolerates our two boys and when they hug her with me in the room, she just stares at me as if saying "I'm doing this for you"

    • @bbycherub2420
      @bbycherub2420 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@charlenelynch6505That's different because Chihuahuas aren't inherently unethically bred. Chihuahuas aren't a result of backyard breeding of wild animals with domesticated dogs.

      @@charlenelynch6505And also, Chihuahuas haven't killed and maimed multiple people.

    ' but not too many' means what ? A wolf-dog is a hybrid wolf and dog? A wolf is powerful and a wild creature and can kill a human. Is that right?
