I can't believe VW actually uses v-band clamps from the factory. That's so convenient.
Edit: Honestly, that factory pipe with cat looks extremely well-made. Much better than older cars I've worked on.

It will give you a real kick in the butt with the software, warning though. It's never enough, the guy that services my older ST225 modded his R to about 480hp and he's already talking about doing more. My ST225 has about 330hp but 510nm due to the 5pot and I'm looking at more work myself, I'll keep the S3 how it is. It's a never ending cycle, at first it blows your mind but then you get use to it lol.

That is a pain to do in the driveway. Was able to on my GLI and Bug turbo, but on the S3 I couldn't get it high enough and had to cut the pipe to get it out.
Next? TTS front calipers? RS3 front control arms? (more solid bushings)? 034 front camber plates and other goodies?

Did the torque specs for the propshaft bolts change for the 2019 MK7.5 Golf R? My manual for MK7 says 60 nM. Only the bolts we don't loosen, the ones going in the other direction, holding the coupling to the propshaft state 50nM + 90deg in the manual.

On a stock car when upgrading the Downpipe, what is the recommended factor to increase it by, while enhancing performance yet still keeping the daily driver characteristics ? I know most say bigger is better, but surely this is only for Power. What about small turbo, stock cars ? Surely beyond a certain size, flow velocity is reduced and car loses power ? I have upgraded from the stock 42mm to a 63mm DP, and even with a tune, it is laggy at low rps. On my car 63mm equates to 2.25x the size of the stock DP. In the process of redoing this DP so any advice is appreciated ?

Hey Charles, awesome review I had a question about the sequence order u tightened it in. Because I have the same downpipe installed on my 17 gti pp and the downpipe seems to tap on the diff on first acceleration. Was wondering if I loosened the two 13s and maybe added a washer I’d have enough clearance. And of course add a nylon nut or lock nut. As of rn in the air, it’s about a quarter inch away from it so I know it taps it on throttle. Thanks

Hello @HumbleMechanic I have recently went for an SMN stage 2 map on my golf r with a BMC filter and a CTS catless downpipe and thankfully the car is running great but the problem is that the downpipe has a fumey smell that is visible when i'm around the car or in the car with the windows down but nothing in the cabin but the problem is that I mostly drive with the windows down and the smell unfortunately makes my head hurt and makes me dizzy so does the IE catted downpipe remove this fume smell after the car has warmed up and when the windows are down with the engine warmed up and running or will the fume smell stay even with the IE catted downpipe?

The small black bracket the bolts to the left and right-hand side of the car looks like an exhaust support near the factory resonator (where you clamped the straight pipe to the rear end of the factory system) - Is this black bracket/bar a crucial part of the cars structural integrity or is it there to simply support the exhaust. Hi HumbleMechanic, I put an after market downpipe on my car. The pipe does not have a vband on the turbo side but instead bolts into a custom turbine housing mated to a borg warner efr turbo. The install instructions said to put some red rtv between the down pipe and the turbo. I did this but a month later got a small leak causing my afr rich. I would like to put a gasket in place of the rtv but i dont know what could take those hot temps. Any ideas? Copper?

I ended up using a metal gasket on my mk3 turbo. See if who makes the downpipe can help source a gasket. The place I got the turbo setup form said no gasket. But I’m like nah she needs a gasket .

it would be nice if You Sir, travels and fix cars.. so much work tho. i don trust mechanics / technician in my area.. they are money grabber.. k fine you gotta make money but at least be honest and fix cars in the right way instead of going on cheap parts and take shortcuts which can lead to more expenses from the owners side in the future.

I've watched this video like 10 times ahead of installing a downpipe on my a3. First time doing any exhaust work and for sure this helped, done in 4 hours on jackstands. Universal joints and extensions were the absolute hero of this install though.
