I'm right there with you on the lack of built-in native effects in the Rane One. However, I disagree that it looks crooked. Since I own a Rane Seventy (with built-in Flex FX) with my OG Technics SL1200 MK2's set up NON-battle style on each side, if you look at the position of my platters, I guess this would look crooked too... To me, it just looks right. Maybe it's just because I'm old. LOL
Nah man i have an S9 and t-tables and it looks just fine. The right deck on the Rane is leaning to left side of the mixer section and it just looks doofy.
I have the Rane One and going into it I didn't think it would mess with me but it took me a couple gigs to get used to the load/scroll knob on the right deck being on the left rather than all the way on the right like most mixers. Still not a deal breaker and I am already used to it. This video is kind of click baitey.
This is not a mixer it’s a controller, if they put the onboard effects on there why the hell would you go buy a mixer when you can just buy this? It’s just business, I have one and I love it but I respect your opinion Nick
It's 'off center' because the platters aren't mirrored. If you have a regular turntable and mixer setup it would be similar UNLESS you have it set "battle style" (most turntablist and hiphop dj's prefer this so that the tone arm and pitch shift are out of the way) - tbh this is the preferred set up, I hate when controllers are mirrored... years of working with turntables i guess.
Yeah man this dude is silly with that whole "crooked" thing, maybe he's never had real turntables or CDJs?! Also I always had my turntables battle style and that's also not mirrored by the way, according to this dude it would also be crooked! smh lol
If I can perform on it like turntables, then I’m okay with the lack of on board effects. Most of what I use is echo and flanger. In fact, I think the Serato phaser effect is better than the one built into the S9.
I agree with you on the Onboard FX, but crooked? I see where you’re coming from but it’s basically two of the same players, they had to make room for the faders.
That's y I didn't buy this one I know soon rane 2 will emerge with onboard effects and mabe a dedicated sample controll knob that's the only thing I need on the next one
Or... and hear me out here, everyone's big complaint about digital effects which is that they aren't as strong and long lasting as on board effects. They could put on board effects on the rane two or... Serato could just improve the software effects.
When I watch 99% of tablists, very few of them use fx, if anything the echo fade for transfer, but rarely do they use or need fx. I don't see what the problem is. Also the fx on the pioneer controllers suck as bad Serato fx.
Man I feel the same way - I've been using the NS7ii for years and want to upgrade to something similar-ish. Thought the Rane One might be the thing but OH MY WORD I HATE that it's not mirrored. I don't really care about the onboard effects - nice to have, but whatever. All the Rane One has shown me is that I either need to get the Denon Prime M series players or wait for the Rane Two / Rane One mk II. I gotta say man, I apologize because I judged you early on and wasn't a fan, but you and I align on so many things and you're saying a lot of the things I've said/say to other DJs all the time - respect.
I want one too but I wish the fx sections was better, they could swap out a row of serato fx and add hardware fx. Also wish each fx had independent control. I can live with the current Rane One but i'd be pissed if I bought it and then the Mk2 came out.
Serato fx suck, and you cant fix them. Vdj fx suck until you adjust them and fix them (you can make the vdj fx sound and perform identical to the pioneer on-board fx).... And on board fx are still digital fx lol...there's literally no difference in how they work, one isn't more real then the other lol....i agree the off center sucks, but you get use to it....but i disagree with the "this is for beginner djs who want to look like they use vinyl"...I've seen dmc winning djs like slipwax, and Elliot ness absolutely tear it up on this controller in person....you can't give this type of review until you've actually used it. As far as controllers go, this thing is an absolute game changer, and will get better when the mkII comes out.
Not true. The Rane One uses strictly software fx which is using cpu. Hardware fx are built into the mixer itself and they don’t have the shitty tail end off beat echo out like Serato fx have. They still have not fixed the echo out...it works but it is not consistent I’ve done countless recorded sets and i absolutely hate the Serato fx...the echo out ruins it for me...the epic reverb is decent though.
@@DjTecniq my point about them both is still accurate. Hardware fx use cpu also....the cpu is just built into the mixer. ...everything else you said, i said lol
Also!!!!!!! Why did they not make the button placement the same as the Rane 12 ? That would address the lopsided look , they messed this one up when it could have been a damn club standard for traveling DJ and performers, hopefully a new version they will correct the issues. A display screen would have nice as well.
I just bought one because the Rev 7 is still not readily available and I needed an upgrade. I LOVE IT. you ruined it for me by pointing out the symmetry (or lack thereof lol). But honestly. It feels good, sounds good. The software fx does suck. But the sturdy build and literally everything else about the controller is really good. The fx paddles does make up for it a tiny bit. They definitely missed a few layups on it but overall.... i am very happy with my purchase for what it is. Which is an upgrade for a DJ still in his first years. The platters feel great. But I dont disagree with your take. Its still a great controller.
1. The lack of hardware FX is a valid critique at the price point. But for any DJ who cares more about FX than moving platters and build quality, Pioneer's got you covered with the DDJ-1000. 2. The assymetry of the One's platters looks much worse in photos than it feels in actual use. A bigger issue I've found with the layout is the proximity of deck 2's start/stop plunger to the crossfader. It's only happened once so far, but I did manage to hit stop by accident while cutting with my right hand. It's a bit of strange design choice because on the Twelves and pretty much all turntables, the start/stop is on the other side.
I'm with you on the on bo0ard effects, but you lost me on crooked. If you have 2 turntables in battle mode and a mixer between the platters are going to be slightly offset. No real way around that IMO.
I have multiple turntable/battle mixer setups and they’re all symmetrical... google a technics 1200 and you will see it’s even on both sides in battle mode.
@@NickSpinelli ... 1200's may be even on both sides in "battle mode"... they are not even when they are positioned as their design was originally intended.
Just bought this today. I really digging it so far. Price was great. Had to jump on it. Yes, it's lacking on board FX but I feel the Serato ones sound good for anyone to even notice the difference. I also bought the FLX 10 but returned it the next day. I wasn't impressed with the Build quality and Pioneer Jog Wheels. Only gripe with my Rane One. Wish it had USB C connectivity. To each their own.
I like your videos. But you are complaining about things that are not that important. Its for turntablists that want more portable options. Ans dont use that many fx... The only thing we are not that happy on tge Rane are 2 things. 1 is the location of the pitch control. We would prefer to have it up top, in the upper part of the controller, like in the Rane Twelves . and 2 it needs a little screen that says the values of the fx
you right for the two points ... when you put the finger on the mirror issue ... i dont understand why they did dat ... i was wondering to buy it ... but now i'll wait ...
Oh well this is pretty simple for me. I remember when i DJ's on two turntables and a mixer and it wasn't no such thing as FX it's still Rock the floor all night long.. it's not what you rocking with is how you rock..
Just got the Rane One. My first gen DDJ Sx has played its last gig, love it, don’t trust it anymore. I wish I could have got the Rane 12’s but outta need I couldn’t drop 4K. This device is the SHIT. I know the gate behind the FX but they’re serviceable. And I’m this is a natural next step to going to 12 inch turntables. Major upgrade. Looks cooler with the motorized platters. And I’m left handed for the ‘crooked’ layout favors me so thumbs up.
I like the way he gets angry and takes personal for the fx. He was so excited and Rane disappointed him. I’m sure next year they will improve with another model
The lack of on board effects is the main reason I wouldn't get this either. Hell, get the S7 for the same price and some super cheap turntables it would still be better
You should check out denon sc6000M no more laptop set up! Just plug and play. Very easy to take rake request on the fly with moving platters with dual deck. Plus it won’t crash like computers do. Would love to hear your opinion on this player. It’s much better than turntables. No needles to get damaged or lost. Less to bring plus it has built in sata bay drive to put your music in. Surprised you haven’t updated. I already sold my heavy ass turntables lol

Rane has the best sound cards in the industry and the Serato effects work like a dream even when connected to a high end club system. Nick has the funniest way of putting things but you cant talk about the Rane One as if it’s a Pioneer Flex which uses software/midi effects.
Crazy I never realized it was off centered like that instead of the decks mirroring each other symmetrically. Weird decision, and no fx?! Hence why my DDJ-1000 will always wear the crown especially for mobile! Effects are impeccable on it
That's the first thing I noticed about this controller, because I used to pitch been a lot and now I don't.. I have to do doubles and cross it over so I could keep using the same pitch been...
We need to understand what analog and digital mean. All controllers and mixers have digital effects, no bbd circuit is built into to those digital machines. The EQ and section it also digital. The quality difference is not the analog/digital war, it’s just bad effects on Serato, which is actually pretty problematic. How’s it still bad?
Numark NS7 series did it right, came out many years ago and has effects too. I wish they just made theirs easier to take apart and repair. I do hate in this thing.
Ease up on the caffeine maybe? The word you’re looking for is asymmetrical, which turntables have been since the seventies, when djs were more concerned about DJing than how things looked in their “furniture “
Starting to see more Denon sc players in booths next to or in place of CDJs and inputs and space for a controller (haven't seen an installed controller yet). Pioneer is just hype now.
Much respect, but as a musician and recording/mix engineer for 35 years, most all effects have been digital effects for decades, whether they're from processor in a dedicated box or the processor in your computer. The latter will have more power and gobs more flexibility. Digital audio workstations like ProTools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Studio One, Ableton Live, Cakewalk Sonar, Fruity Loops, etc, have all used software effects processors for a long time. I prefer that it's not mirrored...it's a mixer in the middle with identical decks on the side. When you look at the whole unit, it looks like what it's supposed to look like.
Nick, I agree with you on Onboard effects I wish Rane would have put the native Onboard effects into the Rane One. It just sounds better than Serato effects. You mentioned how crooked it is. No pun intended but you're just nitpicking or should I say Nick-picking.
@@DJDAMIAN72 I don't play real vinyl except at home, but occasionally I like to add effects to the mic. I also think the onboard effects sound better overall than the Serato effects.

But other than the mic effects issue, I totally understand someone preferring on board effects when mixing but to say not having on board effects is a huge issue or a deal breaker sounds pretty silly & exaggerated to me when people can still use the Serato built in effects, it only makes sense to me that it's a big issue for vinyl DJs, because you can't use the Serato effects with vinyl at all. @@DJDAMIAN72 I don't get the crooked thing 🤣. My issues with the Rane One are minor ones as they didn't stop me from purchasing one 😂. There are some features like the on board effect that I would have liked to have seen. When comparing it to other controllers in the price range like the DDJ-1000, I would have like to have seen it match and exceed the DDJ-1000 features since it is $300 more. Makes total sense why they didn't put on board FX...had they did that, it leaves no incentive to upgrade to a Seventy/Two MKII and a pair of Twelves. Bait em in with The One and leave em wanting more. It's the InMusic blueprint. They did same with the Denon Prime 2/4...give the consumer a taste but not too much where they wouldn't consider upgrading to SC decks and X1800/1850 mixer.
When I learnt to DJ it was just a mixer and that way you get to learn better as you have to be creative. This has tones more stuff then my original two channel mixer
All controllers make a decision to either mirror the decks or have them symmetrical like two separate players. So not exactly what I would call crooked lol... But I don't like how close the left pitch control is to the line level
@@NickSpinelli I own the S4 MK3 as well as the Rane One. The Haptic Drive designed by NI is FUCKING dope but still needs work. A larger S4 with the NI mixer + design language would be a game changer. The heavier the controller the better quality it is. If you don't like digital effects buy the analog effect pedals of JAM or DREADBOX.
Those two reasons are definitely not deal breakers at all. This controller is catered and marketed for turntablists that want a mobile setup without having to bring their decks. This is the first controller that's built like a tank, has legit spinning platters with slipmats, high-end crossfader, and a decent size and weight for portability. Sure it lacks a few features, but as a turntablist, what else can you ask for in a controller?!
U won't buy it cuz lack of fx? Lol
@@Shootinglefty I personally have one already
@@Shootinglefty and I love it!!
Its not a mixer yet it has an actual mixer section, with phono stages for fucks sake, with audio outputs. Cmon bro.
Its not they have to bi mirrored but platters have to be in the centre
Yeah man this dude is silly with that whole "crooked" thing, maybe he's never had real turntables or CDJs?!
Also I always had my turntables battle style and that's also not mirrored by the way, according to this dude it would also be crooked! smh lol
this guy should not be reviewing Dj gear if he does not recognize the set up, calls it "crooked". This dudes never seen a real DJ set up.
If I can perform on it like turntables, then I’m okay with the lack of on board effects. Most of what I use is echo and flanger. In fact, I think the Serato phaser effect is better than the one built into the S9.
I agree with you on the Onboard FX, but crooked? I see where you’re coming from but it’s basically two of the same players, they had to make room for the faders.
def. feel u on the effects bro!!! I'm good with my DDJ1000 for now...got caught up in the hype bit the effects killed it for me
Do you play real vinyl, because that's the only time not having on board effects is a real issue?!
I love the Rane One. Having a blast with it 🔥🔥🔥
Amen 🙏
Lol
For the effect they will soon release a Rane 2 with effects at a higher price!
When though?!!
When I watch 99% of tablists, very few of them use fx, if anything the echo fade for transfer, but rarely do they use or need fx. I don't see what the problem is. Also the fx on the pioneer controllers suck as bad Serato fx.
Crooked= Not mirrored... Some people WPULD complain if the pitch adjust on the right side was next to the mixer section. Great video!
I still want one but am gun to wait for a possible mk2. What do you think? Keep up the good work
I want one too but I wish the fx sections was better, they could swap out a row of serato fx and add hardware fx. Also wish each fx had independent control. I can live with the current Rane One but i'd be pissed if I bought it and then the Mk2 came out.
I like rane one,but I can not find a virtual dj dvs timecode just only serato time code
So glad i watched this! Good one Nick! Thanks
Can I use Tidal with this controller?
I have the One, my issue is that there is only one RCA output, i still love it tho, i used 1200’s in the 90’s so this controller is refreshing
Sure it is 😆 now that you see that it is off center it's bugging you big time LoL
You never noticed until now LMMO 😆
As far as controllers go, this thing is an absolute game changer, and will get better when the mkII comes out.
everything you said was spot on
If your a good DJ, you don’t need any effects.
I'm with you on #1, #2 is not a big deal. By the way I click'd the like thumb.
Nick if you take two 1200 turntables and you put them between any mixer they are going to look crooked too.
CAN YOU USE VIRTUAL DJ WITH THIS CONTROLLER
4:36 “this is the full Shan nay nay controller” 🤣🤣🤣
Oh well this is pretty simple for me. I remember when i DJ's on two turntables and a mixer and it wasn't no such thing as FX it's still Rock the floor all night long.. it's not what you rocking with is how you rock..
So how do you make it with 2 real turntables if you think this is crooked
Battle style!
I don't know what kind of genres you play but I have no issues with the effects on djay pro
I have the rane one not a big fan of the 12inch skinny platter. It gets slippery
I like the way he gets angry and takes personal for the fx. He was so excited and Rane disappointed him. I’m sure next year they will improve with another model
We shall seeeeee
Do you really want to carry those around? Heavy.
@@BrennanSedivy Technics are heavy too. I use the prime 4. My hardrive is built in with WiFi. Everything I need in one unit. I can never forget anything!
Bro!!!!! Your so hilarious...! I was just going to buy it cuz I’m tired of caring my 1200 and s9. But I see what your talking about with it being off center... I’ll keep caring my Technics thank you!!!
Rane has the best sound cards in the industry and the Serato effects work like a dream even when connected to a high end club system.
Nick has the funniest way of putting things but you cant talk about the Rane One as if it’s a Pioneer Flex which uses software/midi effects.
Doesn't it have toggle effects?
There is a 3rd con, no physical sampler volume knob.
Crazy I never realized it was off centered like that instead of the decks mirroring each other symmetrically. Weird decision, and no fx?! Hence why my DDJ-1000 will always wear the crown especially for mobile! Effects are impeccable on it
Yeah bro, i dont know why they put 2 decks off centered..🙄
BROOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously cant stop seeing how off center it is now! WTF! SMH! I almost bought this shit!!!!!
That's the first thing I noticed about this controller, because I used to pitch been a lot and now I don't.. I have to do doubles and cross it over so I could keep using the same pitch been...
It’s not mirrored because it’s like turntables. They aren’t mirrored. You are right about the on board effects missing
Got the new Rane One the damn thing won't power on WTH! Absolutely no quality control.
Videos are looking good amazing growth hopefully you hit 10k and beyond. 👏🏿
They left that and the sample volume , and others because if they would of added it it will mess up the top tier products.
I almost went and bought one but I decided to get the ddj-1000srt instead and I love it
If your want motorized platters buy turntables and a mixer
Starting to see more Denon sc players in booths next to or in place of CDJs and inputs and space for a controller (haven't seen an installed controller yet). Pioneer is just hype now.
Booths where?
BROOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously cant stop seeing how off center it is now! WTF! SMH! I almost bought this shit!!!!!
By activating effects in combination it makes them sound better
Nick, I agree with you on Onboard effects I wish Rane would have put the native Onboard effects into the Rane One. It just sounds better than Serato effects. You mentioned how crooked it is. No pun intended but you're just nitpicking or should I say Nick-picking.
Bro that was sooooo funnnnyy. “Why is it crooked” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
People are mad in the comments but he really makes good points. I don't think this thing is worth more than $1-1.2k
Spot on! There’s always a price to pay for buying the prototype
The Rane One is a lot of fun. I love Scratch Bank but I must admit that it should have come with onboard effects.
Do you play real vinyl, because that's the only time not having on board effects is a real issue?!
@@DJDAMIAN72 I don't play real vinyl except at home, but occasionally I like to add effects to the mic. I also think the onboard effects sound better overall than the Serato effects.
@@djsatch1275
Now wanting effects on the mic and not having them is a legitimate issue, that does make sense.
Oh yeah and this dude repeatedly calling them "Analog" effects and saying the normal turntable & CDJ emulation design is crooked, both on this video and on a DJ Cleveland Terry video I watched shows me that he doesn't really know what he is talking about! lol
I'm sure this dude is a very good DJ but his opinions on the Rane One are very silly, he even admits he hasn't even touched the controller yet! smh
Maybe he's just angry because Rane didn't send him a free one? lol
Nonetheless, the moving platters, portability, build quality and Scratch Bank support are hard to beat, especially if you started out DJing with turntables and vinyl like I did. Overall, I love it. It's the best of both a controller and turntables.
The ddj 1000 and srt is amazing I did want the rane one but not sure if it's needed though and at 1500 bucks idk bruh
Nah, Its worth the price bro. Its a beautiful controller. NICK wasn't wrong about his gripes but at the end of the day. It performs great. I can't leave mine alone.
people buy these to cut it up bro...
Appreciate that. Knew you’d keep it 💯
You are funny dude, loved the Brutally honest review!!
I wish it was in a battle mode layout that would fix the mirror issue ... That would have been dope and would space out the up fader and tempo faders.
This is a great insight
I think they just started with this base model to build on for future business bro! I think am they all are getting smart and purposely not making them perfect on the first model. I’ll wait for the RANE TWO or THREE ✊🏾💯
You're gonna wait a long time and there's no such thing as a $1600 plus tax base model
$1760 roughly
LMMO 😆
Makes total sense why they didn't put on board FX...had they did that, it leaves no incentive to upgrade to a Seventy/Two MKII and a pair of Twelves. Bait em in with The One and leave em wanting more. It's the InMusic blueprint. They did same with the Denon Prime 2/4...give the consumer a taste but not too much where they wouldn't consider upgrading to SC decks and X1800/1850 mixer.
When I learnt to DJ it was just a mixer and that way you get to learn better as you have to be creative. This has tones more stuff then my original two channel mixer
Great show bro. You hit the nail on the head.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
All controllers make a decision to either mirror the decks or have them symmetrical like two separate players. So not exactly what I would call crooked lol... But I don't like how close the left pitch control is to the line level
Lol How come no one talks about the Traktor S4 MK3 in my opinion is one of the best moving platters controllers.
Wait the S4 has moving platters???
@@NickSpinelli YES came out October 2018. I love it.
@@NickSpinelli I own the S4 MK3 as well as the Rane One. The Haptic Drive designed by NI is FUCKING dope but still needs work. A larger S4 with the NI mixer + design language would be a game changer. It’s a hybrid design that no one else has achieved. Sadly the software lock-in with Traktor (no HID mapping to other software) is why I bought the Rane One. Tough position to be in.
@@BrennanSedivy The only thing that I find wrong with it is there should have been a separate channel for the Mic. The Traktor software is a great software. My opinion.
Traktor s4 mk3 is one of the best controllers out there but so underrated
DJ Das EFX is in the How's Mixing it OCD Street Style
Basically, if you're NOT A REAL DJ you won't like the Rane.
Go buy a SRT if you're not serious and need FX.
Also I have a SZ. Pioneer sold so many because it's aesthetically and mechanically functional with the best internal components pioneer could offer.
RANE made a great controller. Definitely going to buy one and use my SZ for dueling DJ's.
Thirdly - Where's the aux out? Or "Session Out"
There's a booth out....what you mean? Lol
@@Djtylerwallace A lot of DJ's like to use an Aux out to send signal to a "Breakout Room" or the subs. Using the Booth out for this function is simply not an option.
@@djvibedjservices i use booth out to send signal to my subs, or a set of satellite speakers all the time. Not sure why it isnt an option.
@@Djtylerwallace My monitor(s) tend to fluctuate in level a lot, at times I shut them off completely. Plus where I like to have my monitors set at might not be where I want my subs/breakout room set at.
@@djvibedjservices ok but what controller, or mixer has more than master and booth outputs? S9, s11, 1000, sx, sz, all have master and booth. Only ones i know of are the 70, and 72. If you need more outputs you should be using an external mixer imo.
What works for you is what best for you. Not every dj uses effects.
Agree on everything! Especially the crookedness... I started getting dizzy after looking at it. Ewww
I’ve been really eyeing the One, but now I’m kinda hesitant. Seriously need to upgrade my main system I’ve got every penny’s worth out of my first gen DDJ-sx. done many hundreds of gigs with it but it’s tired, beat up, and outdated. I want to make the jump to the twelves with either the Rane mixer or an S9/11 but may regret lugging something that bulky. So the One seems like the better alternative . But not sure. Wish pioneer would develop a controller with motorized platters...
Your wish has been granted lol rev7
It’s funny reading comments from all these button pressing DJs who bitch about efx... I have the Rane and I can tell you not one person has come up to me and said the efx sound bad..
Guess what.. They don’t care!! This controller mimics turntables so I don’t get the crooked thing either..
I also have the srt and I hated it! I hate cdjs.. I have always hated pioneer mixers because the efx UI sucks. Too much to remember and too many knobs for quick mix type DJs..
If there is a complaint for me.. It’s the absence of a sample volume knob... That’s truly annoying!
Other than that... If you can kill a party nobody cares about your efx... and if you need efx to dj then that says more about you...
I really didn't realize this was crooked now it bothers me everytime i look at it
Great controller I don't care about the weight. What you pay is what you get. I don't mind about internal effects either. I use my own BOSS 500 series effects pedals. The heavier the controller the better quality it is. If you don't like digital effects buy the analog effect pedals of JAM or DREADBOX.
No one in the comments has ever considered pedals lol
I’m gonna get mine bro🔥
Those two reasons are definitely not deal breakers at all. This controller is catered and marketed for turntablists that want a mobile setup without having to bring their decks. This is the first controller that's built like a tank, has legit spinning platters with slipmats, high-end crossfader, and a decent size and weight for portability. Sure it lacks a few features, but as a turntablist, what else can you ask for in a controller?! Everyone else bitching isn't a turntablist so don't even bother looking this way and grab yourself a different controller.
I’m a turntablist and you know what else I can ask for?!? REAL EFFECTS.
